Windows Phone app news: Skype video calls for Mango Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:50 AM PDT
Skype video calling support will bring WP up to speed with Android and iPhone. The next generation of Windows Phone handsets featuring the revamped Mango operating system will come packing front-facing cameras and open-up video calling through Skype.
The confirmation came from Microsoft itself during the TechEd NZ expo in New Zealand, during which the country's official Windows Phone account tweeted:
"Nice, they just confirmed at TechEd NZ that #WP7 devices with forward-facing cameras are coming with Mango - and Skype will support it."
The arrival of video calling for Skype is the latest addition to the impressive-looking OS refresh, which looks set to offer more competition to iOS and Android this time around.
Earlier this week it was confirmed that the burgeoning Windows Phone App Marketplace now has 30,000 apps at its disposal, reaching that landmark faster than Android.
Today's announcement is the first real evidence of Microsoft putting its $8.5 billion purchase of Skype to use.
Earlier today, the first Windows Phone Mango handset, the Fujitsu IS12T went on sale in Japan. The European announcement is expected next week, with September 1st being touted as the ETA.

Having remained quiet on all things tech-related, the HTC Bliss has decided to show its pretty face again The lucky people at XDA China have been able to get an up-close look at the new HTC Bliss.
Rumours were put to bed about front-facing cameras and whether it will run on HTC Sense 3.5; both of which have been confirmed and what is more, it will come in a variety of colours. The high-quality pictures show sleek curved corners in-line with HTC’s style but it appears longer than previous styles.
The HTC Bliss has been described as being “female oriented” and will apparently include a dangling charm that lights up when you have a missed call or new message. Furthermore, the Bliss is set to include female orientated apps such as a calorie counter and shopping companion which apparently females are concerned about? Hopefully these new pictures signify that the wait won’t be much longer to get your hands on the Bliss and to see if it lives up to expectation.
What do you think, is the HTC Bliss on to a winner? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

HP TouchPad spotted with Android Posted: 25 Aug 2011 09:00 AM PDT
HP TouchPad's are hard to come by at the best of times, imagine how rare a HP TouchPad with Android would be then. Apparently they do exist, and they've been cropping up on eBay. Reports have come in of several HP TouchPad's that have been found to be running Android 2.2 FroYo, not webOS as was expected. These tablets, which have been bought from eBay, are believed to be prototype testing units.
At present two units have surfaced, both carrying applications and software which points towards them being Qualcomm owned TouchPad's that were being used to presumeably test out the TouchPads capabilities. In a series of videos the two owners run through the features found onboard which includes a vanilla version of Android 2.2 and a series of advanced testing programs designed to test the screen and the processor.
HP's TouchPad has been a runaway success ironically after it was scrapped, with prices reaching as low as £90 for the 16GB version. HP has currently reported that while the tablet is now currently sold out in the UK after what was essentially a firesale, there would be more stock heading to the UK.

Next generation Blackberrys could support Android Posted: 25 Aug 2011 08:30 AM PDT
Sources close to RIM have claimed that next years Blackberry models will be able to run Android applications. In an attempt to maintain market share and popularity of their handsets, Research In Motion (RIM) is planning to enable next years Blackberry models to run Android applications. Three people familiar with RIM's future plans claimed that next generation Blackberrys running RIM's new QNX software will also be able to support Android apps.
QNX-run Blackberrys are expected early next year and QNX software is seen as an important part of RIM's plans for the future. Additionally, a move towards Android applications would alleviate one of Blackberrys chief problems, and bolster their otherwise stale application store.
You may remember that RIM confirmed that the Playbook would support Android apps earlier this year. This appears to have been delayed until the autumn at the very earliest and there is still a possibility that Blackberry phones and the Playbook may become Android compatible simultaneously.
Ultimately a move towards Android should steady the RIM ship a little, as Blackberry will have plenty of competition for sales should the highly anticipated iPhone 5 arrive before the end of the year as expected.
Would Android compatibility make you more likely to consider staying with or picking up a Blackberry? Let us know what you think on the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Samsung Bada has been quietly gaining followers, while it was never destined to be a true rival to Android or iOS it's a testament to Samsung's ethos that the OS is still going strong. Bada 2.0 is now available for developers in SDK form after Samsung confirmed the second itteration of the operating system would be seeing the light of day.
Riding off the success of their high-end non-Android Wave series Bada went from being a glitchy and unreliable operating system for Samsung's lower-end models. With one of the fastest processors available at the time and easily the best screen on a phone before the iPhone 4, the Wave instantly drew in punters who were happy to overlook the lack of Android.
Bada 2.0 sees the operating system take a step into the future, with WiFi Direct, Near Field Communication technology and the ability to multi-task, they've also thrown in some nifty voice recognition technology to boot. The new OS will be seen appearing in the next collection of Wave phones which Samsung are hoping will imitate the success of their original siblings.

Fujitsu IS12T goes on sale in Japan Posted: 25 Aug 2011 06:47 AM PDT
Fujitsu have launched their IS12T handset, the first Windows Phone 7 Mango phone to hit the market. Last month, Fujitsu unveiled the IS12T - the first handset running Windows Phone 7.5 a.k.a. Mango. Today, the IS12T became available in Japan via KDDI Au - Japan's second largest mobile carrier.
As we reported last month, the Fujitsu IS12T is water, shock and dust-proof and comes equipped with a 3.7-inch 800x480 resolution LCD screen, a high powered 13.2 megapixel back-mounted camera and 32GB of built-in memory. Support for DNLA-certified TVs and PCs, microUSB and GSM/CDMA is built in, and you can have it in luminous citrus or magenta, or black if you prefer your phone not to look like a jellybean.
Mango is essential for Windows Phone 7 to establish itself in Japan and the far east, as it is the first version of Windows Phone to support Japanese, Chinese and Korean character sets.
A first hands-on courtesy of TechCrunch has reported that the phone felt overly light and plasticky. Despite the slightly 'cheap' feel of the handset, initial impressions of the UI were excellent.
The handset has launched towards the higher end of the smartphone market, so if this phone finds its way to the UK, expect it to be sitting in the higher price ranges.

Jobs receives 97% approval rating from Apple employees Posted: 25 Aug 2011 03:39 AM PDT
Steve Jobs has received a massive approval rating of 97% from Apple employees. Employment review and ratings website Glassdoor has conducted a survey to obtain an approval rating for former Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs. The results are perhaps unsurprising, as 97% of over 800 Apple employees approved of the way Steve Jobs led Apple during his tenure at the head of the Californian technology giant. This makes Steve Jobs one of the most popular and successful CEOs ever rated on the site, not just in the technology industry but across all sectors.
Jobs stacks up well against his direct competitors, those with over 90% approval ratings include Google CEO Larry Page and Facebook head honcho Mark Zuckerberg, however their high ratings only come from less than 100 people. The only direct competitor with anywhere near the number of ratings as Steve Jobs is Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer who is languishing with a worrying 46% approval rating.
There is a lot to be said for making statistics say whatever you want, but it is refreshing when a figure like Steve Jobs is just as respected within his firm as he is outside it. Apple will be hoping that new CEO Tim Cook and the rest of the Apple executive board can carry on the pioneering work done by Steve Jobs over the last 35 years.

Steve Jobs quits as Apple CEO: the full story Posted: 25 Aug 2011 03:31 AM PDT
Apple CEO Steve Jobs announces his resignation in an open letter to the company's board of directors. It is believed his on-going battle with prostate cancer is the reason behind his leaving
Steve Jobs has resigned as the Chief Executive of Apple. In an open letter, addressed to the Apple Board of Directors, Jobs said he could, “…no longer meet my duties and expectations as CEO,” and that he had recommended COO Tim Cook as his successor. The Board has agreed to Cook’s appointment.
Jobs, 56, has been on medical leave since January, with Cook overseeing operations in his absence. However, the erstwhile CEO has been a major presence at Apple’s key launches this year, albeit in a reduced role.
The news has already wiped billions of dollars off Apple's stock market value as traders cast doubt over the company's long-term future without its visionary leader at the helm. More than $17bn (£10.3bn) or 5 per cent has been slashed from its overall stock market value, bring it down from $348bn to $330.5bn, just weeks after Apple became the world’s most valuable company.
Since he was snapped looking scarily thin while leaving a Californian cancer clinic earlier this year, Jobs’ on-going battle with prostate cancer has come under intense media scrutiny, with some even using his declining health to launch attacks on Apple. And in Feburary, a US tabloid magazine went as far as to claim Steve Jobs had only six weeks to live.
Speaking on behalf of Apple’s Board, Art Levinson of the biotechnology company Genentech said, “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company. Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team.”
Jobs will continue to serve as Chairman of the Board at Apple, with his fellow directors approving his new role last night. It means significantly less time at work for Jobs, whose health will now fall under the spotlight.
Read Steve Jobs' full resignation letter below:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

New Windows 8 file transfer features revealed Posted: 25 Aug 2011 03:23 AM PDT
Microsoft has been updating a blog with new Windows 8 features since it was announced, the third post has appeared and it highlights some of the more advanced features you can expect to see. The Windows 8 blog has unveiled some more of the new features coming to the Tablet/PC operating system which include copy, paste functions and the UI for file transfers.
One of the biggest changes in this area will be how Windows responds when you carry out a file transfer. Before, you'd be given a rough estimate of how long the transfer would take, now however Microsoft has decided that rather than mildly improve on data which is frankly near impossible to accurately estimate, they'd focus on giving you more options.
You can now pause file transfers as well as see real-time data graphs on how each transfer is doing, allowing you to pause particular transfers to allow the quicker copy of others. Realistically it's a feature that you'll either have been crying out for or probably won't even notice on the new OS which is actually how Windows wants it to be.
Finally they've also added a thumbnail system for replacing files with the same filename, whereas before you were simply prompted to go through each image and confirm or cancel now you'll be greeted with tick boxes, letting you see the original and the prospective replacement.
What do you think, will Windows 8 be the best Windows OS yet? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple set to dominate tablet market until 2013 Posted: 25 Aug 2011 03:08 AM PDT
44.2 million iPads expected to be sold in 2011, as rivals struggle to keep up. The iPad is set to continue its domination of the smartphone space until at least 2013. That’s according to new research from IHS Suppli, which says that even after that date, Apple will hold a huge slice of the market.
The research company says the lack of any serious major rival means that by the end of 2011, Apple will have around 74 per cent of the tablet market. The same researchers said earlier this year that Apple would have 64 per cent, but that, “The competition can’t seem to field a product with the right combination of hardware, marketing, applications and content to match up with the iPad.”
By 2013, Apple will only just be ahead as rivals club together to take over, says IHS Suppli. But even then it claims Apple will sell 120 million iPads in 2015, taking around 43 per cent of the market. Considering the fragmented nature of other systems, that means the iPad will still be the single most popular tablet out there.

Steve Jobs to help develop major Apple products Posted: 25 Aug 2011 02:32 AM PDT
After Steve Jobs announced his resignation it was unsure what the next step would be. It's very likely that Jobs will be chairman of Apple but also maintain a 'hands-on' approach, making sure the company stays on the straight and narrow Walt Mossberg, a journalist who is believe to be very close to Apple, has confirmed that Steve Jobs will still be playing a major role in the company, helping with the development of major new products and the company's strategy.
Essentially what this means is that Jobs will be making sure his vision remains intact, still steering the company but from the workshop rather than from the boardroom. This news came just hours after the announcement that Steve Jobs would be stepping down from the company as CEO, but stated he would hopefully remain as chairman and also advisor.
His replacement Tim Cook will no doubt be pleased to hear that Jobs won't be retiring entirely and potentially this also means we could see some great new products from the company.
What do you think, will things change or will everything be business as usual at Apple? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple updates its official executive hierarchy Posted: 25 Aug 2011 02:23 AM PDT
Apple's official board of executives chart has been updated to include Tim Cook and Steve Jobs in their new positions as CEO and Chairman respectively. In case you didn’t already know, Steve Jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple Inc. Apple has already updated the organisational chart depicting their hierarchy on their website, as well as having updated a number of profiles for board members. Not only do the alterations now refer to Tim Cook as CEO both pictorially and in writing, Steve Jobs is also shown in his new position as Chairman of the Board.
The reshuffle is not yet complete, as a replacement has not been appointed for the position of COO formerly held by Tim Cook. It is thought that current Head of Operations Jeff Williams will fulfil this role in the near future. Apple’s Head of Retail, Ron Johnson, is still listed despite the fact that he will soon be departing to take up a position at JC Penny.
We do not yet have an exact picture for the board that will lead Apple into a new era without Steve Jobs. But given the speed with which Apple has updated their command chain thus far, we may not have long to wait. Time is absolutely of the essence, but Apple must pick their people carefully, as the hole being left behind by Steve Jobs cannot be overestimated.
Will Apple's new board of executives be able to take the company forward without Steve Jobs? Let us know what you think on T3's Twitter and Facebook pages.

Windows Phone Mango has mobile hot spot Posted: 25 Aug 2011 02:15 AM PDT
New feature could land on new Mango phones soon. Windows Phone Mango, Microsoft’s just released mobile OS update, appears to pack in mobile hot spot skills. A new screen shot, unearthed by the fanatics at WP Central, shows so-called “Internet Sharing” on a US-only Samsung Focus.
The feature means users will be able to share their 3G connection with other users, potentially tethering their phone wirelessly to their PC or Mac. Apparently, this early version does run the battery down quite quickly though.
Experts reckon this new Internet Sharing function will most likely be buried deep in the OS’s menu structure, with networks deciding whether users can use the data heavy service or not.
Either way, it makes Windows Phone Mango even more appealing. Enough to convince you to get a device using the OS? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Closed beta kicks off in UK and US as RIM looks to fight back in smartphone wars. RIM’s oft-rumoured streaming service, BBM Music, has finally gone official. The new package is aimed at making music social, with users able to share playlists with friends for a $4.99 monthly fee.
The concept is simple, yet actually rather brilliant. Your $4.99 allows you access to 50 tracks a month from millions of tracks offered up by all four major music labels. You can then change up to 25 tracks every month.
That might seem like a stingy number of tunes, but there’s genius behind it. See, every one of your BBM friends who subscribes to BBM Music then shares their 50 tracks with you, giving you potentially thousands of tracks depending on just how popular you are. Essentially, the more friends you have, the more music you can listen to.
A timeline shows all recent updates from your BBM Music friends, so you’ll know just what new songs have been added and which ones have been cruelly taken away. There’s even offline syncing, so you can listen even when you haven’t got reception.
BBM Music is currently in closed beta here in the UK, so fingers crossed BlackBerry gives you the call. If not, just pray it’s not long until this gets a full rollout. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
