iPhone app news: FIFA Superstars arrives on iOS Posted: 30 Aug 2011 09:42 AM PDT
Think you can do better in the transfer market than Arsene Wenger? Here's your chance. EA's popular football management game FIFA Superstars has landed on the iPhone.
The Fantasy Football-style game, which allows you to build your own team of real-life football megastars, had been a popular title on Facebook, and now with the help of the Playfish social gaming studio, makes its debut on iPhone.
The idea is a lighter version of the immersive Football Manager/Championship manager sims where you assemble your squad, manage transfers, pick the training schedule and the formation.
You can also buy equipment for your players to increase their chances of doing the business when they step over the white line on a Saturday afternoon.
The social element makes it different from the aforementioned titles, however, as you pit your expensively assembled squad against other players, instead of the computer, with the best team coming out on top. Like a football management version of top trumps.
In order to play the free game, you'll need to sign up for the EA Origin service, which is the gaming giant's version of a social network.
Since Sunday's 8-2 humbling at the hands of Manchester United on Sunday, most Arsenal fans seem to think they could do a better job then Arsene Wenger. Well here's your chance, lads!

Sony Tablet S2 to be named Sony Tablet P? Posted: 30 Aug 2011 09:21 AM PDT
Sony's latest tablet could be getting a name change to fit in with the Sony Tablet S or S1 as it was previously known A rumour has surfaced which says the latest Android tablet from Sony, the Sony Tablet S2 could be getting a name change to the Sony Tablet P.
The dual 5.5-inch screen folding tablet will apparently be appearing at IFA this week running Sony's own skinned version of Android Honeycomb and showing off the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor along with 512MB of RAM and a front-facing 0.3MP snapper.
Weighing in at only 370g (the iPad 2 is 601g) the Sony Tablet P will be hoping to encroach on the smartphone/tablet market by combining the small and unique form-factor with a fully functioning tablet as well. There's no official word on these new name changes, but considering how close to IFA the information has been leaked it seems likely these will be the names they stick with on release day.

Sony PS4 release not coming anytime soon suggests EA Posted: 30 Aug 2011 08:22 AM PDT
Sony PlayStation 4 release date still sometime off as gamers stay loyal to current generation consoles Gamers are still happy with the current generation of consoles suggesting Sony’s much mooted PS4 will not land anytime in the near future, an EA head has claimed.
Having announced he hopes the current generation PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will be around for “a little longer,” EA Labels head Frank Gibeau has said that it is hard to see where the mooted next generation consoles could improve on the current models.
“I'd like to see the cycle last a little longer. I don't see consumers right now banging on the walls for a new platform. They seem to be very happy with their PS3s and 360s. They love the online connectivity, they have great communities and great libraries.”
Whilst Gibeau remained insistant that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are still more than up to scratch he said that news of a Wii revamp was warmly welcomed. He said: "I like the fact that Nintendo's coming in with new hardware. That'll help really rev up their business for the HD side, which is where we're in a really good position."

HP TouchPad to receive over the air webOS updates Posted: 30 Aug 2011 07:12 AM PDT
HP TouchPad tablet to add over the air webOS updates Despite having ceased production of the TouchPad, HP has confirmed that it is to continue supporting its recently deceased tablet with a series of over the air updates to be issued for the webOS device.
With Hewlett Packard recently confirming it was to end production of all webOS hardware with immediate effect the tech giant slashed the price of its outgoing webOS tablet with TouchPad stocks in the UK selling out as prices dropped to under £90.
"HP is fully committed to the ongoing support and service of customers who purchased webOS devices.”
Hewlett Packard confirmed that in the wake of the recent price cuts it had seen “huge spikes” in device activations and app downloads pledging “we plan to continue to investigate the best ways to leverage WebOS software and grow the applications."

Website to use crowdsourcing to fix transport issues Posted: 30 Aug 2011 07:02 AM PDT
A new website called fixmytransport.com has launched today and gives commuters a platform to report any problems with public transport services
A new website that offers commuters a platform to complain and report problems with public transport services has officially launched. Fixmytransport.com, which has been in beta for the past two months, will pass on customer complaints and feedback directly to transport operators, with the hope officials will tend to any reported glitches on their networks.
The website has been in the testing stage for close to two months but has already received nearly 70 reports, including a complaint about the poor state of the Woolwich Ferry Greenland pier, which the council repaired shortly afterwards. The site already has a number of transport bodies involved, including Transport for London, with whom it's been working with for the past two months.
Problems reported on FixMyTransport will be directed to TFL customer services and dealt with from there. It is understood that Transport for London isn't paying the website for this service.
The project follows the same principles as fixmystreet.com, where residents' complaints and reports are forwarded on directly to their local authority to fix anything from fly-tipping to pot-holes. Last year the website dealt with more than 60,000 problems alone.
Both of these sites are services provided by MySociety, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to make information more accessible to the public.
It is unclear how much FixMyTransport can do to improve public transport in London, but MySociety have a good track record (creator Tom Steinberg now advises the government on making their data more accessible), and there is a sense of optimism around the site that it can achieve the same success that forebears such as FixMyStreet have done.

Facebook pays $40,000 to tighten security Posted: 30 Aug 2011 04:30 AM PDT
Facebook has called in the cavalry to make sure the social network is fully protected, offering researchers the chance to make money by identifying holes and bugs in the code Facebook has paid out $40,000 as part of a scheme which rewards those who find bugs and loopholes in their code and then alerts the social network to the weaknesses.
It's part of a program which is hoping to encourage security researches to alert Facebook of any loopholes in the code, and in return Facebook pays a reward. The minimum a person can earn is $500 for a bug being found, while some researches have managed to bag $7,000 for several bugs or one large one.
With so much money having been given out already it's clearly working and follows in the footsteps of Google and Mozilla who run similar programs to help fix problems with their own software. Microsoft has also been involved in rewarding those who find problems with its software, offering more than $250,000 worth of prizes for those that come up with the best security ideas.
Is this a good idea? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Amazon tablet to be closest Apple iPad rival says analyst Posted: 30 Aug 2011 04:22 AM PDT
Mooted Amazon tablet tipped to rival Apple iPad as best tablet available The widely rumoured Amazon Android tablet is to be the closest competitor to Apple’s chart topping market dominance in the tablet sector with the iPad, an industry analyst has claimed.
With recent reports suggesting that Amazon could offer up its Android tablet for a hefty loss undercutting the iPad price by more than £100, a report from analyst firm Forrester has suggested the retailer’s tablet could compete with the dominant Apple device and sell up to five million units by the end of the year.
"If Amazon launches a tablet at a sub-$300 price point — assuming it has enough supply to meet demand — we see Amazon selling 3-5 million tablets in Q4 alone," said Forrester’s Sarah Rotman Epps.
"Even though Amazon taking on Apple is a bit like David taking on Goliath Amazon's willingness to sell hardware at a loss combined with the strength of its brand, content, cloud infrastructure, and commerce assets makes it the only credible iPad competitor in the market."
Rotman Epps added: "The bottom line: A year from now, "Amazon" will be synonymous with "Android" on tablets, a strong second to Apple's iPad.”
Could an Amazon branded Android tablet sold at a loss knock Apple’s iPad off its lofty perch? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Sense 3.5 video revealed on HTC Bliss? Posted: 30 Aug 2011 03:43 AM PDT
A video has surfaced showing what is reported to be not only the HTC Bliss but also HTC's Sense 3.5, the latest incarnation of the company's UI for Android Tech gadget website Engadget has managed to get hold of a video showing off what could be HTC Sense 3.5 on the much anticipated HTC Bliss.
The video, which follows all the rules for blurry, badly contrasted tech videos, shows off the 'new' UI on what appears to be the HTC Bliss. Running over Android 2.3.4 the new UI shows off only some minor changes, with larger widgets, smoother graphics and general cosmetic improvements being the order of the day. The volume slider has now become touch-enabled, allowing you to slide the volume at any point with your finger as well as with the rocker on the side.
Alongside that you'll probably find yourself getting more involved in looking at the HTC Bliss, as the minimalist changes, combined with the handset look to be a sleek paring. With this not yet confirmed however there is a slim possibility that this isn't legit, but taking everything into account there's no reason why not.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution ends Zumba's chart run Posted: 30 Aug 2011 03:40 AM PDT
Deus Ex: Human Revolution has dethroned 10-time chart topper Zumba Fitness to become number one in the UK's All Format Games Chart. Deus Ex: Human Revolution marks the beginning of an autumn and winter period packed with highly anticipated releases topping the UK All Format Gaming Chart in its opening week.
Still to come before christmas are marquee titles such as Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3 and Gears of War 3, as well as games outside the first-person shooter genre such as FIFA 12 and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
In fifth place amazingly, is Call of Duty: Black Ops, having jumped 13 places over the week. Long time rival Battlefield 2 meanwhile, has dropped 6 places from twelfth to eighteenth. With Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 just over a month away, is this a precursory sign of things to come? Probably not. But it is interesting nonetheless.
Cars 2 and FIFA 11 have dropped into sixth and seventh respectively, Dirt 3 remains in eighth leaving Lego Harry Potter in ninth. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood jumps up nine places into tenth at the expense of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as hardware and software sales for the Nintendo 3DS continue to stutter.

Three promises 3G for rural Britain Posted: 30 Aug 2011 02:50 AM PDT
Mobile network Three has become the knight in shining armour for the rural areas of Britain by promising them 3G goodness in lieu of their poor internet speeds Three, the mobile network operator has offered to supply free 3G mobile-broadband in the form of their 3G dongles to the areas in Britain which suffer the worst internet speeds.
In what Three is calling a 'commitment to Government' they are helping make sure that everyone in Britain has at the very least a 2Mb service after it was found that some rural parts of the country were still suffering from pitiful internet speeds. The dongles will be offered to these rural areas of the country and will be free for a year with Three warning that while speeds will be an improvement they may still find it slowing during peak times.
This is all part of Three's approach to Britain's broadband woes by suggesting that through the use of mobile networks, areas worst hit can be brought back up to the Government standard.
What do you think, is 3G the solution or should the Government invest even more in nationwide broadband? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

$24.99 service up for grabs early for US-based devs. iTunes Match, Apple’s soon-to-be-released music storage and streaming service, has just gone live for developers in the United States. Devs are set to get a free three months thrown in with their 12 month subscription, which costs $24.99.
In an email to developers, Apple warned beta testers to back up their music libraries in order to avoid any problems. “Apple will periodically reset your iCloud library during the beta and it is critical that you backup your music regularly. Some features and optimisations of iTunes Match will not be available during the beta."
iTunes Match scans and stores up to 25,000 songs from your iTunes library in the cloud, allowing you to download or stream them wherever you are on iOS-enabled devices, Mac or PC. It’s due to launch officially in the US next month, although a UK date has not been revealed.

Samsung Wave 3, Wave M and Wave Y official Posted: 30 Aug 2011 01:00 AM PDT
Top-end specs, but can Bada still excite in the age of Android? Samsung has given the official nod to three new phones packing its proprietary Bada mobile operating system. The Wave 3, Wave M and Wave Y, all mooted last week in a comprehensive leak, come loaded with top-end specs. But are they really worth it when similar Android phones are flooding the market?
The Wave 3 is the flagship new Bada phone. With a 5 megapixel camera, 4-inch Super AMOLED screen and a 1.4GHz processor, it looks impressive on paper. But Bada isn’t exactly loaded with access to thousands of third party apps like its Galaxy stablemates, making this top-end effort a bit of a strange release.
The Wave M touts a 3.65-inch screen and 5 megapixel camera, with NFC also included. Bringing up the rear is the Wave Y, with a measly two megapixel snapper and 3.2-inch touchscreen.
Sammy hasn’t said when these handsets will hit shelves. And before you start flexing your credit cards, remember a string of new Galaxy phones are also expected to be announced this week during the IFA trade show in Berlin.

iPhone 5: screen will not be 4-inches Posted: 29 Aug 2011 11:43 PM PDT
Insiders reckon screen will either stay same size as iPhone 4 or get minor bump. The iPhone 5 will not have a 4-inch screen, despite a slew of rumours and web speculation that Apple was looking to amp up the panel in order to compete with larger, flagship Android devices.
Supply chain sources, speaking with Digitimes, claim that the screen will be between 3.5 and 3.7 inches with a thinner bezel. These sources suggest that any talk of a 4-inch screen is emanating from those who want to see Apple include a larger screen.
The news follows a string of new stories about the iPhone 5 over the bank holiday weekend, with chatter about a new metal back plate and a completely new design for the top-end phone. Word is the headline-grabbing device will be joined by an 8GB iPhone 4, sold at a cheap price.
We’re getting ever closer to the official unveiling of the iPhone 5. Whether you want the latest rumours or the best analysis, stay tuned to T3.com and be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

New Toshiba Android tablet: slimline slate set for IFA Posted: 29 Aug 2011 11:26 PM PDT
Toshiba set to take second bite at tablet cherry with newly designed effort. Toshiba is set to reveal a new, super-slim Android tablet at IFA, the German gadget trade show which kicks off later this week. The new slate will replace the Thrive, which received mixed reviews thanks to average design and its chunky size.
The next-gen tab, spied by Notebook Italia, will tote micro SD, micro USB and micro HDMI, as well as a front-facing camera for gTalk video chat sessions. A 1.5GHz processor should ensure things move at lightning speed.
Other specs remain thin on the ground, but all will be revealed in Berlin by the end of the week. Toshiba will have to ensure this really is top notch, especially with the iPad 2 running away with the tablet lead and a slew of other killer tablets expected at the show.
We’ll be on the floor at IFA, bringing you all the latest news and gossip as it happens. Stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter feeds for up to the minute updates. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
