iPhone app news: Vonage offers international calls through iTunes Posted: 04 Aug 2011 02:11 PM PDT
Unique payment method offers easier international calls. Popular VoIP service Vonage has launched a new app for iPhone, which allows users users to make cheap international calls on the fly and pay for them via their iTunes account.
The Time to Call app, which is free to download, allows users to make a call up to 15 minutes in length through VoIP to landlines or mobiles over Wi-Fi and 3G.
Users are charged per call, with each 15 minute session costing £1.49 to 100 countries. Calls to an additional 90 countries start at £1.99 and everything is then charged to the iTunes account associated with the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
More good news arises from the fact that anything under the 15 minute call limit can be used for your next conversation, so there's no wastage if you're only on the phone for five minutes or so.
Each download includes a free 15 minute call, with no further commitment necessary, so it's definitely worth a download.
It's certainly a little more convenient than constantly topping up Google Voice credit, if you just need to make a call in a hurry and the blanket rate lets you know exactly how much your international chin wag is going to cost.

New@8pm: Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Call of Duty DLC Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com It was announced today that Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be out on August 12th. The new tab is a smaller version of its 10.1-inch sibling and is available for pre-order on Amazon. Sony has ‘accidently’ leaked images of its forthcoming tablets the S1 and S2, pulling them off the web just hours later. The pics seemed to show the tabs sporting Android 3.2, although a separate snap revealed them packing Android 3.1. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
In other Sony news the UK release date of the Sony PlayStation Vita is getting pushed back to 2012. Coming directly from the Sony head office itself, this certainly is disappointing news for anyone who’s already put the console on their Christmas list. But fear not, you can now ask Santa for Pure’s new Move 2500 portable DAB and FM radio device, and it’ll be a lot cheaper too, setting you back at a ‘mere’ £89.99.
In the world of games, the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Rezurrection DLC will be out on the Xbox Live Marketplace on August 23rd. Also available on PS3 and PC, the new content will include five new zombie maps, and no doubt blow a gigantic hole in your wallet. Having already been confirmed for release on November 8th for Xbox 360, PS4 and PC, it was announced today that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will also be available on the Wii and be released sometime before the end of the year.
Today saw Apple’s Find My Mac feature sent to developers who now have first-hand access to the newly released beta of the upcoming iCoud service. The service is officially out on wide release next month. And finally, already containing over 40,000 fully digitised copies of novel, poems and historical documents, the British Library iPad app has increased its collection and will now carry more than 65,000 works. Over 90 per cent of young adults use the internet daily Posted: 04 Aug 2011 09:26 AM PDT
91 per cent of 18-25 year olds go online daily a new poll has claimed More than 90 per cent of 18 to 25 year olds use the internet everyday, a poll of 1,488 Britons carried out my MyVoucherCodes has revealed.
Of the 91 per cent of respondents who said they used the web everyday, 71 per cent said they predominately accessed the internet to utilise social media accounts whilst 59 per cent said one of their main reasons was for work or study purposes.
Of the mere 9 per cent of 18 to 25 year olds who claimed not to access the internet every day the main reason for not doing so was that they “couldn’t be bothered.” Just four of the 1,488 people questioned said they didn’t have access to the internet.
“Although I think it is quite obvious that everyone uses the internet a lot, it’s still quite shocking to see the figures,” Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk said. He added: “Obviously the internet is a great resource to have at our fingertips, but that doesn’t mean we have to use it all the time.”

British Library iPad app increases collection Posted: 04 Aug 2011 03:24 AM PDT
Found yourself longing for a bit of classic reading, from Sherlock Holmes to the Canterbury Tales, look no further. The British Library is on the cusp of increasing the collection of it's iPad app to 65,000 works, the app already contains around 40,000 fully digitised copies of novels, ancient poems, and historical accounts.
While it does cost (£1.99 a month), the increase of around 25,000 is just the next step in making as much of their collection available on the move. If that wasn't enough it's also in partnership with Google to digitise a further staggering 250,000 public domain works.
The works have been painstakingly digitised and are available with all the original drawings and annotations, because of the way they have been digitised however the files are of an extremely large size. What this simply means is that the whole collection remains in the 'cloud' ready to be accessed via the app.
Are the days of getting a book out from a library coming to a close, is it a good thing? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Rezurrection DLC release dateunveiled as August 23rd Despite gearing up to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release date Activision has unveiled the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC with Rezurrection to land later this month as a zombie only content addition.

"Four are remastered and upgraded versions of the World at War Zombies maps that started it all - Nacht der Untoten, Verruckt, Shi No Numa and Der Riese," a spokesperson for Activision said on the upcoming DLC levels.
They added: "If you were introduced to Zombies gameplay with Black Ops, these are the historical maps that will fill in some of the backstory for you - and in addition to updated weapons and polish, they each still have their own surprises to offer."
The one completely new level will still offer some surprises, however, with the ‘Moon’ map based where its name suggests as Activision announces “the rules of engagement will apparently be changing.”

Find My Mac feature rolls out to devs Posted: 04 Aug 2011 02:08 AM PDT
Devs getting first play ahead of official release next month. Apple’s Find My Mac feature has rolled out to developers who have access to the newly released beta of the forthcoming iCloud service. iCloud.com threw open its doors earlier this week, allowing a privileged few to play with the storage and syncing service.
Find My Mac uses Wi-Fi rather than GPS to track a devices location. It means if it’s missing or stolen, you can track it down and either message the person using it, lock it or wipe the hard drive to save strangers accessing your data.
This new function mimics the ace Find My iPhone feature, which aims to prevent data from your phone getting into the wrong hands, as well as providing a nifty way to get hold of your blower after you’ve dropped it on a hazy night out.

Microsoft hits back in Google patent spat Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:22 AM PDT
Big M first to shoot back in what will doubtless lead to more legal wrangling. Microsoft has hit back at accusations levelled by Google that it and Apple are indulging in attempts to buy up patents in order to stymy smartphone development and levy a “tax” on Android phones.
Google’s Chief Legal Officer, David Drummond, used the search giant’s official blog, to claim Microsoft and Apple were “banding together” to buy patents from Novell, “…to make sure Google didn’t get them.”
In response, Microsoft lawyer Brad Smith took to Twitter, saying, “Google says we bought Novell patents to keep them from Google. Really? We asked them to bid jointly with us. They said no.”
Apple and Microsoft say they bid for the patents together in order to stop smaller companies and individuals suing them in the future.
Smith’s assertion that Microsoft asked Google to come on board appears to be backed up by an email revealed by Microsoft communications chief Frank Shaw, sent from Google lawyer Kent Walker. In it, Walker says, “After talking with people here (Google), it sounds as though for various reasons a joint bid wouldn't be advisable for us on this one.” That suggests Google was keen initially and will doubtless fuel the debate about why the Big G has written such an inflammatory piece about its competitors.
What will Google’s response be to these Microsoft claims? Stay tuned and we’ll bring you all the details we get them.

Sony slips info online, then pulls pics hours later. Sony has let slip screens of its forthcoming S1 and S2 tablets, replete with info about which version of Google Android the iPad challengers will be running. The images were loaded up to a Sony support forum and formed part of a since pulled troubleshooting document.
The images appear to show the S1 and S2 packing Android 3.2, although a separate snap has the device running Android 3.1. Either way, these are only iterative updates, so nothing to stop desperate Sony fans busting out their wallets.
Otherwise, the shots reveal information on the apps included on the devices, with Crash Bandicoot and Crackle making an appearance.
The S1 and S2 are expected to be released next month, with Sony hoping they can take up the mantle of iPad rivals-in-chief. Planning on snagging one? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Google slams Microsoft and Apple over mobile patents Posted: 03 Aug 2011 11:36 PM PDT
Google accuses Cupertino and Big M of looking to impose "tax" on patents. The war between Google and Apple has been escalating ever since the Big G decided to develop Android. And now the search giant has used its official blog to launch a blistering attack on Cupertino, as well as Microsoft, for using dirty tactics to hamper Android’s growth.
The post, written by Google Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond, says Android has led to, “…a hostile, organized [sic] campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents.”
Drummond continues, “They’re doing this by banding together to acquire Novell’s old patents (the “CPTN” group including Microsoft and Apple) and Nortel’s old patents (the “Rockstar” group including Microsoft and Apple), to make sure Google didn’t get them; seeking $15 licensing fees for every Android device; attempting to make it more expensive for phone manufacturers to license Android (which we provide free of charge) than Windows Phone.”
The blog goes on to claim that these “anti-competitive” measures have led to the price of patents being needlessly inflated. He says Android’s rivals want to slap a “tax” on phones backed by Google, stating, “They want to make it harder for manufacturers to sell Android devices.”
This is incendiary stuff and could lead to all out warfare in the battle for smartphone supremacy. Hit the link below to see the full blogpost now.
