ebooks also in the work for world-beating personalised iPad mag.

Customisable social magazine Flipboard has announced a major upgrade for its iPad app, to include full TV shows and movies for the first time.

The T3 Gadget Award-nominated app, which pulls in feeds from your favourite sites and articles shared by your social networking friends into a full digital magazine is also coming to iPhone, the company has announced.

Flipboard plans to launch its TV and movie service by the end of the year after approaching the major studios to be part of the venture.

The company said it also plans to expand the platform to allow the sale of ebooks, which would appear to be a logical progression for the massively popular application.

The app, which has been downloaded three million times for the iPad, will launch for the smaller screen iOS devices in the next few weeks. Expect that number to exponentially multiply.

Google TV set for the UK?

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Google TV is set to make its debut in Edinburgh, finally confirming rumours that started last year

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is due to talk at the Edinburgh Festival later today with the potential to launch the Google TV.

Described as "Internet TV", Google TV will allow you to switch between normal TV channels and catch-up services such as I-player, ITV Player and 4OD seamlessly on your TV screens with a single click.

Google TV is a set-top box but how will it differ from Smart TV functionality that is widely available at the moment that allows you to access the web and catch-up services?

With the launch of Google TV and their recent acquisitions such as Motorola and SageTV, Google are positioning themselves very strongly on the IPTV platform. The service is rumoured to launch in the UK in the next six months after its earlier launch in the US.

Will you be buying into Google TV? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Weird News: Silver Foxes and the iPad Bridesmaid

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 04:33 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

Internet Terms in Chambers Dictionary

Internet terms such as 'cloud', 'paywall' and 'tweet' will soon be entering the next edition of the Chambers Dictionary. These are just obvious examples, in fact around a quarter of the words being added in the next edition are terms derived from internet use. The publisher their next Dictionary edition depicted "a wave of geek chic, a more strident green agenda, and the way in which the recession has shaped how we speak today."

The Science of the Silver Fox

Scientists have found that stress really can cause grey hairs. Chemicals are triggered during stressful situations that degrade at the protein 'p53', also called 'the guardian of the genome' by scientists for its importance in preventing cancer. "The study showed chronic stress leads to prolonged lowering of p53 levels," said co-researcher Dr. Makoto Hara of Duke University, North Carolina.

The Company Haircut

Japanese construction firm Maeda Corp. has ordered 2,700 of it's staff to adopt the same haircut in order to save on power and water. Men are required to have a classic short back-and-sides whilst women are permitted a short bob, with a fringe. Maeda Corp. spokesman Chizuru Inoue said, "we are not sure of the data yet, but we believe if people have short hair they do not need to use their hair driers for so long and they will use less water."

The Really Mobile Phone

One of the common limitations of the mobile phone is battery life, especially with smartphones becoming more powerful by the month. Professor Tom Krupenkin from the University of Wisconsin says that, "humans, generally speaking, are very powerful energy-producing machines." Thanks to a small energy capturing device placed in your shoe, you may soon be able to recharge your mobile simply by taking a stroll.

The iPad Bridesmaid

In a week where all the talk has been about Steve Jobs and Apple, this is surely a story that would bring a smile to the man's face. Bridesmaid Renee Armstrong managed to attend her friend's wedding, despite being 1,600 miles away from the service. She was not only part of the ceremony, but she chatted to guests, attended the reception and even posed for photos... yes, all via her iPad.

Apple TV subscription service in works?

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 02:46 AM PDT

Ever since its creation, Apple has been looking to expand its range of services available for Apple TV. Sources suggest it believes the next step is to offer a Apple subscription service.

Apple is apparently working towards offering a subscription service which will allow people to rent unlimted films and programs on their TV's for a monthly fee.

The rumour has come courtesy of the Wall Street Journal who claims to have reliable sources inside Apple which have suggested the company is looking at ways of expanding the service, making it more and more viable for use with TV's. Apple TV at present offers Airplay and access to the iTunes library of films and television programmes.

The company had previously tried to instigate something similar but it fell through after an agreement couldn't be made with the television and film studios. Of course this hasn't stopped Apple in the past so rumours of this sort appearing again are likely to have some element of truth to them.

Would you want to see Apple introduce a subscription service? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Sony Ericsson is working on a new flagship phone dubbed the Nozomi. And it won’t just be sold in Japan, as had been previously thought. That’s according to an ‘anonymous tipster’ speaking to the chaps at Xperia Blog.

The new phone will pack a lightning fast 1.4 GHz processor, along with a 4.3-inch screen with 720p HD Ready video skills. There’s no other news on specs, although seeing as SE has gone all in with Android, expect Google’s OS to be sitting pretty under the hood.

Super zoom skills for FZ150, while FX90 comes with Wi-Fi built in.

Panasonic has pulled the wrappers off of two new top-end compacts, the FZ510 and FX90. Each one comes loaded with killer specs that should sate even the most fastidious photography fanatics.

The FZ510 leads the line, rocking a 25mm wide angle lens, with 24x optical zoom. This Leica lens uses special Panasonic tech to cut down on light reflection to stop ghosts and flares. It also totes Full HD video smarts, along with a 12.1 megapixel sensor and full manual control. Creative control smarts also mean you can add filters before taking shots.

This uses Panasonic’s new “Lumix Club” cloud service, which lets you create an account and add details of your Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, Flickr and YouTube accounts. It’s just a case of choosing which site you want to send your handiwork too.

As well as Wi-Fi skills, the FX90 has a Leica wide angle lens, 12.1 megapixels and Full HD video smarts. Both camera are due to hit shelves in October, with prices yet to be confirmed

Facebook Places gets update

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

There had been speculation that the changes that have been made to Facebook's Places feature was because of FourSquare, Facebook has since got in contact to confirm it was to make the service easier to use

Facebook has made changes to its Places check-in service, removing the mobile-only Places feature and evolving locations into being simply 'tags' that can be added to a status update much in the same way that you tag a friend.

There had been speculation that these changes were made to move the 'Places' feature away from rival services, however since time of writing a spokesperson for Facebook has been in contact with T3 to clarify their changes.

"Facebook is filled with discussions about where people are, have been, or want to go. It was already possible to talk about location in this way on Facebook by tagging Place Pages from the Web. We’ve expanded this functionality. Now locations are just tags."

They were also keen to highlight that the 'check-in' feature has also remained, they've just changed the way we, as users, access it.

"Previously, people had to click “Check In” from their mobile to claim a deal. Now, when they click “Check In”, they will be directed to their status and have an opportunity to add social context to their check-in – things like who they’re with, where they are and what they are doing."

What do you think, are these changes for the better? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple co-founder: Jobs deserves a break

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:47 PM PDT

"Steve deserves some 'Steve time'", says man who started company with Jobs.

Steve Wozniak, the man who started Apple with Steve Jobs, says he’s pleased that his friend and former colleague has decided to call time on his job as CEO of the world’s biggest company.

“He really has had to sacrifice a lot to run Apple. I mean, just your time, everybody wants you day and night, that's what I mean by sacrifices. It takes so much out of anyone to be under just constant pressure and demands like that,” said Wozniak, speaking to Information Week. "Steve needs now to just have some 'Steve time’. He deserves it."

Wozniak went on to add that he doesn’t think Apple will suffer because of Jobs’ shift to Chairman. “You've got to remember. He was surrounded by great, great people at Apple ... and those people are still there. I don't think the core Apple culture will change because of Jobs' leaving, not for a long time.”

Will Apple be badly affected by Jobs’ decision to quit? Or can it carry on as the world’s hottest tech company without his guiding hand? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:33 PM PDT

No specs, but now we know just what Sammy has planned for next week's Berlin gadget megashow.

Samsung will roll out three new top-end devices at next week’s IFA tech trade show in Berlin: the Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Note and Wave 3. How do we know? All three devices are mentioned in the company’s official IFA Android app.

The news was uncovered by This Is My Next, whose source found mention of the devices while rooting around in the recesses of the Android add-on. Sadly, there’s no word on specs, although we can safely assume the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will be a reboot of the original Galaxy Tab, using Android Honeycomb.

The Wave 3 will likely pack in Sammy’s own Bada OS, just like its predecessors. The Galaxy Note, however, remains a mystery.
