Windows 8 app news: App Store confirmed for new OS Posted: 18 Aug 2011 10:16 AM PDT
It's hardly shocking, but good to hear nonetheless. Microsoft has confirmed what most observers had expected, that the forthcoming Windows 8 operating system will have its own App Store.
The store, which will go head to head with Apple's Mac App Store, will give users of the tablet-friendly new OS the opportunity to download the majority of PC software from an online portal.
The announcement was made via the MSDN blog where Windows President Steven Sinofsky listed the teams working on the development of the potentially-epochal operating system.
Windows 8, expected to launch early-to-mid 2012 will revamp Microsoft's base offering with a mobile-inspired operating system, much like Apple recently achieved with the launch of Mac OS X Lion.
The launch of Windows 8 will see Microsoft finally bring its market-leading PC software to the tablet world.
Now that an App Store has been confirmed, the next question is, will Microsoft have the stones to actually call it App Store?

BA to give Apple iPad 2's to cabin crew Posted: 18 Aug 2011 09:28 AM PDT
British Airways has begun field testing iPad 2's as replacements for the old paper manifest while also offering passenger profiles, live seating layouts and special food requests The airline has decided to make the move from paper to 'pad in a bid to not only provide 'better customer service' but also to better equip the cabin crew.
The iPad 2's are all 3G and have specialised software onboard which shows the full passenger manifest, where each passenger is sat and any special dietary requirements they might have. Not only that but the Apple tablets are fully laden with timetables, safety manuals and live customer service updates, meaning that even when the plane is on the runway, they'll still be getting information sent to them.
BA's head of inflight customer experience Bill Francis believes this is just the start however pointing out that 'the possibilities for future development are endless'. At present it's simply a trial with 100 staff testing out the scheme however BA is planning on bringing the tablets to all 1,800 senior cabin crew members in the next few months.

New FIFA Street screenshots out game's street pitches Posted: 18 Aug 2011 04:43 AM PDT
FIFA Street is set to make a major comeback next year after EA admitted that the last incarnation just didn't do the idea justice. These screenshots should help convince you that they mean business. Following confirmation earlier this week that EA was to revive the FIFA Street franchise, the game developer has released a number of FIFA Street screenshots outing the game’s globetrotting credentials.
Set to utilise the same engine as the upcoming FIFA 12 release, FIFA Street will launch next year with the new screenshots revealing pitches will make use of landmarks in cities such as Barcelona, Amsterdam and St. Petersberg.
In an interview with game outlet PSM3, EA’s Creative Director of the street football sim said: "Street football is all about flare, so we'll have the likes of heel passes and flare passing. What we're debating over right now is how difficult to make a pass.
"Obviously, in the main FIFA series the difficulty isn't in placing a single pass; it's in stringing 15 or 20 passes together to create space so you can get a good shot away," he continued. "But with such small pitches in Street, one successful pass can potentially put you through on goal for a scoring opportunity."
With the FIFA 12 release date set for September 30th in the UK are you more excited about the realistic title or the upcoming street release? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 price to rise as eager fans pay over the odds Posted: 18 Aug 2011 03:44 AM PDT
The Apple iPhone 5 release date will see eager consumers pay over the odds to be among the first to own the Apple smartphone The iPhone 5 price is expected to soar following the iPhone 5 release date as early adopters of the Apple handset pay over the odds via retail outlets such as eBay, a new report has suggested.
The predictions, which come from University of Warwick economist Professor Michael Waterson, suggest those keen to be among the first to tout Apple’s next-generation handset will pay up to three times the device’s retail price in order to get the smartphone at launch.
“We monitored all eBay transactions on the iPhone 4 for six weeks from 24th June last year when it became available in the UK,” said Waterson. “The extent of eBay activity on this product was extraordinary, with total transactions amounting to around £1.5m for 2,183 sales.”
“For the 16GB version of the phone, 98% of sales completed at a value in excess of the listed retail price of £499. The average price was £640.35 and the maximum achieved was £1,180. For the 32GB version of the phone, 97% of the sales completed above the listed retail price of £599. The average price was £778.73 and the maximum price achieved was £1,551.”
He added: “The product was in short supply at this time and so it's probable that demand was influenced by immediacy or ‘snob value’. It will be fascinating to see what will happen to the iPhone 5 as the launch is eagerly anticipated. I think we will see the same level of activity.”

TalkTalk fined £3 million over billing issues Posted: 18 Aug 2011 03:25 AM PDT
Talk Talk and Tiscali have been in a bit of trouble, and when we say trouble we mean they mistakenly billed 62,000 customers, Ofcom were unsurprisingly not pleased Talk Talk and Tiscali have been fined £3 million by Ofcom after it was found that the companies had been mistakenly charging around 62,000 of its customers for 11 months between January to November last year.
Ofcom initially had ordered Talk Talk to solve its billing issues immediately in December of last year, however from then till March 2011 the company had still managed to incorrectly charge over 3,000 of its customers. On top of the fine the communications company has also had to payout around £2.5 million in repayments to customers.
Talk Talk have admitted they're 'disappointed' in the result of the review and have said they feel the fine was disproportionate to the offences committed. The mistakes of last year resulted in the company having the lowest customer satisfaction of any provider, Talk Talk will clearly be looking to rectify this.
What do you think, was £3 million too harsh, or was it appropriate for the mistakes made? Let us know what you think on Twitter or Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Apple to be sued by South Korean iPhone users Posted: 18 Aug 2011 02:53 AM PDT
First Apple has its ban overturned about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and now they're facing a lawsuit from South Korea, all in a days work? Apple is facing a class action lawsuit from South Korean law firm Mirae Law after the firm was successful in an initial claim that Apple was illegally holding location data from iPhone's in the country.
Earlier this year Kim Hyung-souk was payed around £500 by Apple after he was able to prove that what they were doing was illegal. With the case being a success his lawfirm will now be moving forward with the class action involving around 27,000 South Koreans all asking for the same amount, totalling £15.2 million.
Apple has as yet refused to comment, and have, after the initial court case, encrypted all their location data and assured users they won't be storing it without security measures in place.
Was Apple right to keep hold of that data, or should they have deleted it? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Motorola Xoom Android 3.2 Honeycomb update to hit UK Posted: 18 Aug 2011 02:39 AM PDT
UK Motorola Xoom tablets are to add the Android 3.2 OS update in September, Motorola has confirmed Following Google’s buyout of Motorola earlier this week the two giants of the mobile market are to join forces with the Android 3.2 update confirmed to roll-out for UK-based Motorola Xoom tablets in September.
With stateside Xoom owners already running Android Honeycomb 3.2, a Motorola spokesperson has confirmed to T3 that the OS update will hit the UK this September, just a month after the 3.1 update landed on British shores.
Unlike the Android Honeycomb 3.1 update which activated the Xoom’s SD card slot and made the Adobe Flash Player available, the 3.2 offering offers few advancements with “optimisations” of the unspecified variety joining fixed-sized apps on the iPad challenger.

PS4 release date rumours quashed by Sony CEO Posted: 18 Aug 2011 02:00 AM PDT
Sony PlayStation 4 release date rumours knocked back by Sony CEO Following a number of PS4 rumours that suggested Sony would launch the next-generation console during 2012, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment has suggested the PS4 release date will not be coming anytime soon.
The PS4 release rumour mill kicked into overdrive last month after Ubisoft President Yves Guillemot suggested Sony would need to release the next-generation PlayStation in 2012 in order to compete with the recently unveiled Nintendo Wii U. However, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Jim Ryan has refuted such claims at GamesCom this week.
One way in which Sony is hoping to increase sales of the current PS3 is through dramatic price cuts. Announced during its GamesCom conference Sony revealed the UK PS3 price is to see more than £50 shaved off with the console to be made available for just £199.
Does the PS3 still have life in its ageing legs or is the PlayStation 4 drastically needed already? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple 3G MacBook Pro reaches $70,000 on eBay Posted: 18 Aug 2011 02:00 AM PDT
Apple have unsurprisingly stepped in at the last minute to stop a prototype 3G MacBook Pro from being sold on eBay, one can only assume they'd now like it back. A prototype 3G MacBook Pro has reached an eye-watering $70,000 on auction site eBay after the individual in posession of it decided it was best to leave his custody, it was only in the last stages of the bidding that it was then blocked by Apple.
The MacBook Pro, which has a side fitting antenna, was already causing a stir at $30,000 but as the closing date neared it was clear that the prototype was going to sell for much more. The 3G antenna is attached to the side of the screen via a magsafe-style system which means if accidently caught or knocked the antenna would harmlessly detach.
It's unsure what the current owner will do with the product, and with Apple clearly on the warpath to get their product back they may have a hard time giving it to anyone let alone selling it.
What do you think, should Apple have made a 3G MacBook pro? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Facebook lashes out at Google + Posted: 17 Aug 2011 09:30 AM PDT
Speaking to Facebook's Director of games partnerships Sean Ryan, a leading broadsheet was told that Google + has 'no users'. Speaking to The Telegraph Sean Ryan said that Google + had 'emulated' many of the aspects of Facebook which was fine, but that doing so wouldn't help them off the ground.
The Director of games partnerships also lashed out at Google's financial plan concerning revenue sharing with game developers, while Facebook takes 30 per cent, Google only chooses to take 5 per cent which is apparently because they have 'no users'.
These claims do somewhat differ with the statistics which show that Facebook took 10 months to reach a million users, while Google + has managed 25 million in less than half that time. With the casual gaming market set to reach a value of $20.3 billion by 2014 and with Angry Birds and other games heading to Google + Zuckerberg's company may have to up its game.
What do you think, should Google + up its game or will it soon overtake Facebook? Let us know what you think on Twitter and Facebook.

iPhone 5 release date teased as iPhone 4 stocks dwindle Posted: 17 Aug 2011 09:28 AM PDT
Telefonica, which owns mobile network operator O2, will dramatically cut its Apple iPhone 4 stock. Could they be making room for Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 5?
O2’s parent company Telefonica is to reduce stock of the current iPhone 4 ahead of an expected Apple iPhone 5 release date on September 12th, new reports have suggested.
Contrary to reports earlier today that iPhone 5 pre-orders are to begin on September 30th ahead of an early October release date, latest reports from the increasingly erratic Apple iPhone 5 rumour mill have claimed Apple will launch the much mooted handset in less than a month’s time.
With reportedly leaked Apple iPhone 5 pictures suggesting the handset will launch with a refresh form factor the eagerly awaited handset is also expected to land with a 1GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities.
Update: O2 has since refuted claims it is cutting iPhone stocks ahead of an iPhone 5 arrival stating it is merely updating how it presents the current iPhone 4 in store.
Speaking with T3 a spokesperson for the smartphone retailer said: We are updating the way we display some of our products in store. We do this on a regular basis for all our products to make sure our stores continue to meet the needs of our customers.

OnLive MicroConsole and controller unboxing pictures Posted: 17 Aug 2011 06:16 AM PDT
OnLive will soon be heading to the UK, along with the OnLive Micro Console and wireless controller. T3 gets snap happy with our unboxing. OnLive has already been available in the US for a year now, giving us tantalising glimpses at what the cloud-gaming system is capable of. Even with only 100 title's the service proved to be hugely successful at launch, and with the promise of thousands of title's when it launches in the UK it has the potential to be huge.
Start Gallery: OnLive pictures and unboxing
If using the OnLive through a TV you'll need the full OnLive Micro Console and wireless controller to get started, as you can see from the pictures, the Micro Console is incredibly small, serving as a gateway to the OnLive network. On the front you'll find two USB ports for connecting extra controllers and accessories. On the back it's just as spartan offering connections for HDMI, AV, Optical and the much needed network cable making this look exceptionally easy to set up.
Moving over to the OnLive Wireless Controller the layout is reassuringly familiar whilst offering some extras in the form of media controls at the bottom for recording 'Brag Clips' and reviewing your own gaming performance. It's light in the hand but still feels rugged enough to be an everyday companion. Of course even if it isn't your cup of tea that's not a problem as OnLive supports Xbox 360 controllers among many other peripherals meaning you can stick to your tried-and-tested favourites if you so wish.
Alongside that there's the much needed power cable and a simple booklet of instructions making it all appear incredibly simple and very attractive as a product. The packaging feels far more bespoke than anything else on the market, while the Micro Console and wireless controller both feel like premium products rather than toys.
No word on pricing as yet but talking exclusively to BT (who are partnering with OnLive) T3 has learned that the cloud-gaming service will be offered as a bundle with their broadband packages, with subscription being paid directly to BT. Whether this means it'll be more expensive to use other internet providers remains to be see, couple that with the recent admission that while the average UK speed is 6.8Mbps there are still rural areas of the UK suffering much slower internet speeds.
OnLive UK release: Things you need to know

With more than 87 million Wii consoles sold around the world to date, Nintendo is hoping its Wii Family Edition bundle will give the ageing device one final lease of life despite losing the Gamecube games and accessory compatibility boasted by its full sized predecessor.
