Posted: 12 Aug 2011 08:33 AM PDT

Samsung to launch first handset to run Google's Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich OS?

A Samsung product roadmap has leaked online revealing the company’s plans to launch a 1.4GHz dual-core smartphone powerhouse running Google’s upcoming Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile operating system.

Reportedly dubbed the Samsung GT-I9250, the mooted device is said to be readying for launch with a whopping 4.65-inch display boasting a hefty 1280 x 720p resolution. Previously leaked as a 720p smartphone monster it is expected the GT-I9250 will land as the next Nexus handset and the first device to sport the Android 2.4 OS.

Seemingly set to take the mantle of the highest specced handset on the market  from its sibling the Samsung Galaxy S II, the Samsung GT-I9250 is claimed to be heading for launch later this year with an optimised 5-megapixel camera.

Not alone on the company’s leaked roadmap the GT-I9250 is reported to be heading for launch alongside a 5.29-inch smartphone come tablet hybrid. Entitled the Samsung GT-I9220, the oversized handset is also set to host a 1280 x 720p display with an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera to be joined by Google’s existing Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.

Whilst precise timings for the handset arrivals have yet to announced and there existence officially confirmed, the timings of the leaks would suggest that both are to make an appearance at IFA later this month.

Do these leaked handsets have to counting down the days until your current handset contract comes up for renewal? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

FujiFilm FinePix F600 EXR officially announced

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:32 AM PDT

The FujiFilm F600 doesn't enjoy it's owners getting lost, that's why it has built-in augmented reality to help you around.

Essentially the F600 is an update to the current F500 series but offers one key bonus, it comes with GPS and Augmented Reality under the hood, making sure you know excatly where to take the best pictures.

Its premise is a simple one: say for example you're in a foreign city and want to visit a famous landmark, the F600 has over a million locations stored so will work out where you are, and then show you the nearest spots of interest, along with distance and direction. GPS has been used in cameras for some time now in the form of geo-tagging photos but never has it been used to this degree of immersion.

Along with this rather neat technical trick the F600 EXR has a 16-megapixel EXR CMOS sensor which accomadates for low-light conditions and has motion-tracking making sure that even if someone loses their balance, the focus will be spot on. Throw in an insane burst mode and 1080p video recording with stereo sound and you've got yourself one travellers companion, all for a not half bad £270.

What do you think, is augmented reality a good idea in camera's or is it just another gimmick? Let us know via Facebook and Twitter.

Second-generation 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab to launch at IFA with 1024 x 600p display?

Samsung looks set to launch a revamped version of its 7-inch Galaxy Tab with the second-generation device to land with a Galaxy S II-esque AMOLED display, new reports have suggested.

Details on the second-generation 7-inch Galaxy Tab have appeared courtesy of a claimed Samsung product roadmap with the revamped tablet to land running the latest version of Google’s tablet-centric Android 3.1 Gingerbread operating system.

Sporting the moniker of the Samsung P6200, the leaked 7-inch device is said to be heading for release with a 1024 x 600p AMOLED display alongside a 3-megapixel rear-mounted camera and a second, forward-facing 2-meg snapper.

Seemingly set to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and launch at the upcoming IFA tech show, the updated tablet device is to support both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity options with a second model, the Samsung P6210, to land as a Wi-Fi only model.

Can 7-inch tablets still forge a market from themselves between increasingly large smartphones and the growing array on 10-inch tablets? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Digital downloads mark the end for physical game sales

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:47 AM PDT

Cloud gaming and digital downloads to see disc-based physical game sales become a thing of the past says expert

A rise in digital downloads and the widespread birth of cloud-based gaming is to spell the end for physical game releases in the coming years, an industry expert has revealed to T3.

Following rapidly in the footsteps of MP3s and eBooks, digital games are to soon replace their physical counterparts as users look to cheaper, faster and space saving alternatives from the current disc formats.

"Eventually digital downloads and cloud streaming will mean the end for physical disc copies of games," said OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman in an exclusive interview with T3. "Everything's moving towards digital distribution. Video games are the last one because these are the largest and most difficult format to convert."

"Initially digital downloads and cloud-based gaming will be complementary to disc releases. People still buy audio CDs so disc copies of games are not going to vanish overnight."

With OnLive further pushig the possibilities of cloud gaming, Perlman was keen to take no credit or responsibility for the death of disc-based games. He said: "It would have happened even if it wasn't for OnLive. It's not a question of whether; it's a question of when."

Will digital downloads and cloud gaming completely remove disc-based titles from the market in the next five years? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Weird News: QR bums and homemade flying machines

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:30 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

Volleyball QR codes
Two British female volleyball champions have signed an interesting advertising deal with Betfair which encourages spectators to photograph their behinds. The sportswomen will have a QR code printed on the back of their bikini bottoms for spectators to capture on their smart phones, taking the viewer straight to a specific website. Our experience with QR codes is that everything needs to keep very still for it to work. Good luck with that.

Athlete-specific clothing
Nike has been using the latest in MoCap technology to design a clothing range based on the gymnastic movements of elite athlete Shawn Johnson. By attaching nodes to Shawn’s body and tracing her movements as she runs, Nike’s able to create a clothing line specifically tailored to and marketed around the athlete. It beats ‘small, medium or large’.

Homemade flying machine
A Chinese inventor has created his own flying machine in which he claims to have reached heights of over 4000m. Zhang Qi, a former employee of a plane manufacturing company, says his home-made machine can travel at speeds of up to 100km per hour. …Looks a bit precarious to us.

Underwater exhibition
An Austrian artist is exhibiting his works on the side of a shipwreck off the coast of Florida. The exhibition includes photographs of the ship that has been digitally enhanced, all of which are sealed in air-tight frames for divers to ponder at. Decent puns on the matter should be directed to twitter.com/t3dotcom ...We can't think of any, and it's making us a bit fish-artened.

Google crashes
One of Google’s self-driving cars has been involved in an accident in California. Google has released a statement declaring that the crash was down to human error rather than the vehicle itself. That’s what happens when you try and keep your eyes on every conceivable part of the road at once.

The dead will rise! …Sort of.
Futurist Ray Kurzweil has revealed that he believes he will be able to create a computer avatar which resembles his dead father so closely that it will be like talking to the man face-to-face. Kurzweil says that this avatar will be created with all the information he has about his father and will even be programmed to think like him. We await an official response from God.

Tsunami Survivors given robotic seals
Not a typo. Japanese company has donated a number of robotic seals to a retirement home near the Fukushima nuclear plant to provide comfort and therapy to the elderly residents after the tsunami in March. Because, you know… seals cure all ills. These furry robots are programmed to be able to take part in the residents’ daily activities, dancing and clapping with them.

Foxconn to replace staff with 1 million robots
Oh dear. The manufacturer that produces parts for Apple, Nokia and Dell is said to be replacing its expensive staff with 1 million robots. Foxconn, which already employs 10,000 robots hopes to increase this number to 300,000 next year, and 1 million in 2014. Presumably because robots won’t keep killing themselves.

And finally…

Soldiers’ Glee rendition becomes YouTube sensation
The British Troops’ rendition of ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ has gone down a desert storm on Youtube. A Desert Storm. Geddit? Right. That’s your lot. Go and weekend yourself silly.

iPhone 5 release to follow September 7th Apple event?

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:08 AM PDT

iPhone 5 release date to be made official at September 7th Apple event?

As tension and speculation grows around the imminently expected iPhone 5 release date new reports have suggested Apple is to hold a product launch event on September 7th.

Fitting with the many iPhone 5 rumours which have suggested the eagerly awaited handset is to launch in September, the mooted event is expected to see the iPhone 5 release date confirmed alongside the arrival of the repeatedly leaked iPod Touch 3G, the launch of iOS 5 and a possible Apple HDTV unveiling.

Citing a reported “source in the know,” Japanese tech site Kodawarisan has claimed that Apple’s traditional autumn event will take place the week after IFA on September 7th. Previous autumn Apple events have been held on September 1st and twice on September 9th.

Latest reports have suggested that Apple will launch the iPhone 5 with a 1GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities. A consumer poll, however, has revealed that the most wanted iPhone 5 features include a thinner handset and a longer battery life.

What features do you hope to see land on the iPhone 5 and when do you expect to see it? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Star Wars Blu-ray free with Panasonic

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 04:59 AM PDT

To celebrate the release of the Star Wars: Complete Saga on Blu-ray Panasonic is feeling extra generous

Apparently the people over at Panasonic are secret Jedi's because they're offering their largest promotion in the UK ever by giving away copies of the Star Wars: Original Trilogy on Blu-ray free with certain Blu-ray players and Theatre systems.

The promotion is all to celebrate the release of the entire Star Wars collection on Blu-ray, an event that has been a long time coming after George Lucas promised the films would be heading to the high-definition format. Each film has apparently been painstakingly enhanced and cared for so that it looks its best on HDTVs.

Alongside the films, the Blu-ray collection will contain over 40+ hours of special features including documentaries and archive footage from Lucasfilm. The offer will only run until December and only includes certain Panasonic products, a list of which can be found here.

Will Blu-ray finally show Star Wars in all its glory? Join the debate at Facebook and Twitter.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich screenshots leak

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 04:25 AM PDT

Leak shows redesigned UI and other new features of Google's upcoming OS Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google's next iteration of its Android mobile operating system has been revealed - partially - thanks to some leaked screenshots of a Google Nexus S loaded with the OS.

Start gallery: Ice Cream Sandwich Screenshots

From the screenshots, which were leaked to the sites androidpolice.com and rootzwiki.com, we can see some changes to the current version of the Google OS. The notification bar has been redesigned, the OS features a shiny new launcher and app-drawer, and has taken on a Tron-esque blue tint.

Other new features of Android Ice Cream Sandwich not pictured in the screenshots reportedly include a panorama mode for the camera and a re-tooled Gmail interface. According to Androidpolice.com, the shots are neither "a joke, prank or some cruel attempt to make you click things" amd that they have "the utmost confidence in our source."

Little has been revealed about Android Ice Cream Sandwich until now, with Google keeping their cards tight to their chest about almost anything other than the name. We have heard, however, that Goolge are planning to launch the OS, which will run on both phones and tablets, sometime in Q4 this year. Stand by for more details in the coming weeks, then.

CoD: Black Ops Rezurrection gameplay video

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 03:29 AM PDT

Black Ops is heading for its final swan song before Modern Warfare 3 steals the stage, and it's heading off with a bang

Call of Duty: Black Ops is heading off with a boom, or at least that's if their latest DLC video is anything to go by. Their fourth DLC named Rezurrection will be both taking us back to the past and throwing us into the future.

Containing the four maps that started it all from World at War, the DLC will then also contain what looks to be their maddest map yet 'Moon'. The name pretty much speaks for itself, with players being placed in a low-gravity environment forced to adapt and adjust their tactics in order to take down the hordes.

While multiplayer has always been Call of Duty's main focus, the zombies have proved to be a revelation for game designers Treyarch who, since creating them, have been receiving constant feedback asking for more of the addictive co-op chaos.

The video in question (check it out below) contains gameplay footage and explanations by the Treyarch team as to why they chose such an unexpected location for their fourth DLC.

What do you think, madness or one of their best ideas yet? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Angry Birds heading to Google +

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 02:50 AM PDT

Google + has now joined Facebook in offering games like Angry Birds, will it alienate or entice?

After today the social network is now the proud home of Angry Birds and other web-based games as the company moves forward in its plans to ramp up popularity of the hugely fast-growing Google +.

The games feature will slowly be added to and updated over the coming days and weeks and will be accessible by a button at the top of the screen. Google is keen to point out though that if perhaps games was never something you were interested in, then it won't be polluting your stream anytime soon.

Google's SVP Vic Gundotra explains saying,"If you're not interested in games, it's easy to ignore them. Your stream will remain focused on conversations with the people you care about,"

As an alternative to the likes of Facebook and Twitter, many have enjoyed its stripped back approach to social networking, with the clean-cut lines of the Google + Android App being a perfect example. Whether or not adding games will be a good or bad move will remain to be seen.

What do you think, should Google + have games, or did you like it as it was? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.
