News@8pm: Virgin Media TiVo revealed and iPad 2 cameras

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Virgin Media has announced the UK’s' first next-generation entertainment platform’. Rolled out later this month for £199, plus your monthly subscription, the TiVo powered box packs on-demand programming, a catch-up service, your own personal video recorder and a range of web-based applications. It will also boast a 1TB hard drive that can hold 500 hours of content and an integrated 10mb modem. If that’s not enough, HD and 3D specific channels are thrown in. With that in mind, Virgin Media will have been buoyed by figures from Futuresource Consulting who have predicted that more than 4million 3DTVs will have been sold worldwide by the end of the year. Futuresource expect the figure to double next year.

Over at the ever-expanding Cupertino Compound, Steve Jobs has confirmed AirPlay will be introduced next year to support Safari and apps, thus solving a glaring omission from its headline iOS 4.2 feature list. In a typically succinct response to a question from MacRumours reader, the turtle-necked one said, “Yep, hope to add these features to AirPlay in 2011”. With that little matter cleared up, the long rumoured dual-cameras for the second gen iPad has been all-but-confirmed. Largan Precision, who supply Apple with lenses for the iPhone 4 have apparently secured the gig, although, as yet, they’re not telling. Retina display, a USB port and FaceTime are other hot, hot hunches.

Acer’s head honcho Gianfranco Lanci has confirmed his people are working on a Windows Phone 7 mobile. The prolific gadget maker, who recently showcased the rather splendid Iconia laptop, already works with Android for its customisation, a fact that appeals to Lanci, “If we look at Windows 7 today, I think we see the same opportunity you can see on Android.” This last statement raised eyebrows after the Big M said it didn’t want custom skins on its mobiles. Still, Windows Phone 7 can’t afford to be too picky if the latest figures are to be believed. Facebook stats has calculated that only 117,000 people have hopped onto the Facebook’s on-board Facebook app which is a drop in the ocean compared to mobile software leviathans, Android and iOS.

LG has been working its little socks off to produce a handset to rival the likes of the uber-successful Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire range, so they’re hoping a not-so-little Star has been born. The LG Star has come out of the shadows and been captured in a series of shots that show it packing Android 2.2, a 4-inch screen and an 8-megapixel camera. There’s even a 7-minute video putting it through its paces. Android’s big brother, Google has also been busy today, unveiling plans to further eat into the eBook market with Google Editions. Launching in the dear old, US of A this side of Christmas, us Brits will have to wait for the new year for a gander.

Sony PSP Phone caught on video ahead of launch

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 09:27 AM PST

PSP Phone to be rebranded the Sony Ericsson Z1

The repeatedly rumoured and long awaited PSP phone looks set to enter the realms of reality as it appears in a sneaky hands-on video in Greece.

The source of the video, which shows a man using a device that strongly resembles the mooted PSP phone leaked by Engadget recently, claims that the device will drop the PSP moniker prior to arrival and launch as the Sony Ericsson Z1.

The rumoured handset, which looks set to be officially unveiled on December 9th following the leaked arrival of an event invitation, is reported to run version 2.3, Gingerbread, of Google’s mobile operating system Android.

Whilst the video does seem to suggest the imminent arrival of the Sony Ericsson Z1, the lack of PSP branding in the device’s name appears to hint towards a lack of access to the full Sony PSP online catalogue.

Xbox Kinect hack brings interactive pornography uses

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 08:26 AM PST

Gesture controls that will get you in a sticky situation

Kinect, Microsoft’s recently released controller-free motion gaming peripheral will be hacked for uses in the interactive pornography industry “within the month” industry experts have claimed.

With hacked Kinect units already being used for everything from puppet shows to Minority Report style web browsers, Kyle Machulis, dubbed a Kinect-hacking authority by New Scientist magazine and head of a website too smutty to mention, has declared Kinect pornography will be here before Christmas.

Machulis, who claims to have experimented with Kinect pornography by waving a sex toy in front of the gaming camera, has encountered a few issues on his quest to interactive carnal content: "The pattern the Kinect uses to get depth data is made for picking up full bodies to control video games, isn't quite so good at picking up minutiae about those bodies."

He added: "Genitalia, for the most part, are not a major geometric feature of the human body when taken in perspective of physical size....Neither are they normally used in the control of video games, be they rated [for all] or [for adults only]."

Despite the stumbling blocks, Machulis has not been deterred and went on to add: "The Kinect alleviates the need for having hardware, because now as long as we have a shot of the 'action,' as it were, we can use that 'gesture' as a control. Not only that, the gesture itself is the toy. Or you could employ a toy under the gesture."

What uses would you like to see hacked Kinect units implemented for? Share your thoughts and ideas via the T3 Twitter and Facebook pages.

iPad 2 dual-camera deal penned by Apple

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 04:44 AM PST

Second gen iPad to feature front and rear cameras

The dual-cameras expected to adorn the upcoming Apple iPad 2 are all but confirmed as new rumours emerge suggesting a supplier has already penned a deal with Apple for the second gen tablet.

The company in question, Largan Precision, is reported to have broadened its current bond with Apple having previously supplied the front and rear snappers for the iPhone 4. It is believed that Largan Precision, which has yet to confirm or deny the speculation, has received a contract to be the sole supplier of camera lenses for the iPad 2.

Dual front and rear facing cameras are hotly tipped as one of the expected updates to land on the iPad 2 bringing the tablet device in line with Apple’s current breed of FaceTime capable devices.

Other rumoured editions to the upcoming iPad follow-up, expected to launch in May alongside RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, include a second dock connector, USB port and a Retina display.

What features would you like to see on the iPad 2? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the inbound tablet.

3DTV: 4 million units sold by end of 2010

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:44 AM PST

Worldwide sales gather pace

It seems 3DTV is finally taking off. Futuresource Consulting has predicted that more than 4 million 3DTVs will be sold worldwide by the end of the year, and that figure looks set to double next year. Here in the UK, sales have passed the 120,000 mark and could top half a million sets sold by the end of 2011.

Futuresource goes on to say that take-up on 3DTVs has been more promising than previously hyped technologies, ‘year-one adoption of 3DTV is running at a far quicker rate than it did for high-definition’.

One of the major reasons for this is, unsurprisingly, cost, with manufacturers able to produce chip sets at a reasonable cost to keep 3D affordable. However, with Toshiba announcing it would be investing in glasses-free 3DTV there were fears that consumers would wait, but Futuresource reckons the technology is up to seven years away from ‘mass-market pricing’.

The jury is still out for the majority of consumers, after Deloitte released a study that showed 83 per cent do not believe in 3D technology. Although with massive investment from the likes of Samsung, Panasonic and Sony, 3DTV is set to be increasingly a part of our daily entertainment.

Elsewhere in 3D world, Sky has just announced that the world’s highest grossing film, Avatar will be screened on Christmas Eve at 8pm on the dedicated Sky 3D channel. Can’t wait a few hours to open the huge rectangular pressie under your tree? It’s time to kick back, relax and watch James Cameron’s sci-fi epic.

Gran Turismo 5 patch to improve damage models

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

Gran Turismo 5 damage models to be given overhaul

Following its glitch-hit launch last week, Gran Turismo 5 is to be on the receiving end of another patch later this month with improved damage modelling taking top priority.

Head of Polyphony Digital and GT guru, Kazunori Yamauchi has spoken of the inbound updates via Twitter proclaiming  'Mechanical damage options will be implemented in a new update for GT5 coming "early December"'.

The ultra realistic Gran Turismo 5 has come under criticism since launch for its current mechanical damage system that offers more realistic crashes the further users progress in the game and the higher their driver rating becomes.

With a patch launched ahead of the game’s release to allow online content to be accessed, reports of delays and loading issues to single player modes resulting from congested online content forced Sony to release a second online content patch over the weekend in an attempt to curb the problems.

Following a five year wait has Gran Turismo 5 lived up to your expectations? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest GT5 news.

Google Book Store coming this year

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

US readers get in on the action first, before global bookworms get a taste in 2011.

Google’s much-vaunted book store, dubbed Google Editions, is all set to launch this year. The news comes from Google’s very own Scott Dougall, who has told the Wall Street Journal that the service is being primed for a US launch this side of Christmas. Global book fanatics will get a chance to play with the new service in early 2011, he said.

“Because of the complexity of this project, we didn’t want to come out with something that wasn’t thorough,” stated Dougall. Editions had been expected to land earlier this year, with Google talking up its prospects way back in May.

The idea behind Google Editions is different to both iBooks and Kindle. Readers will be able to buy books direct from Google or independent book shops, before tying them to a Google account. Punters will then be able to log on using any device they please and bury themselves in any titles they happen to have saved in the cloud.

Editions is certainly a smart proposition. And you can bet that it’ll be shown off on that string of Android tablets expected at CES next month.

Asus U36 super-slim latptop with 10-hour battery unveiled

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 02:54 AM PST

0.75-inch, 3 pound laptop with NVidia graphics? Sign us up

While it may not take the MacBook Pro’s mantle for mind-bending thinness, Asus’ newly unveiled U36 is still mighty slim. The 13.5-inch notebook tips the scales at a little more than 3 pounds (the 13-inch Air weighs 2.9 pounds) and is 0.75 inches thick at its thickest point.

Under the hood, there’s a choice of an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor and NVIDIA Optimus graphics, but the real boon here is a four cell battery that boasts an Apple-smashing 10-hour life. The MacBook Airs only manage 7 hours at most.

Asus is being tight-lipped with price and launch details for the U36, but we’ll keep you posted. If you're intrigued though, check out the U36 pictures to see if you think it’ll win the ultra-portable war.

LG Star video shows off HDMI port and 8 megapixel camera

Video footage of the LG Star, the Korean manufacturer's rumoured high end smartphone has been captured revealing many of its key features.

The 4-inch screen handset which looks set to run on Android 2.2, also appears to sport a HDMI port and a 8-megapixel camera. Previous speculation suggests it will also be powered by a Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

New LG Star pictures were snapped of the smartphone yesterday, and now the guys at GSM Israel have a 7-minute video showing what we can expect when it finally arrives.

Unfortunately, the video is not in English, but for those who have taken an instant liking to the Android smartphone, you can still get a good feel for what the handset is capable of.

The Star is expected to land early next year. You can see the LG Star hands-on video below.

Windows Phone 7: only 117,000 sold?

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 02:03 AM PST

Facebook numbers point to low sales for Microsoft's new operating system.

Windows Phone 7 doesn’t appear to be having the speedy start that so many had predicted. Phones packing in the smart and sleek OS hit a mere 40,000 on their first day on US shelves according to one report. And now new data suggests that number now sits at a measly 117,000.

The figures are taken from Facebook stats, which calculate the number of punters using Windows Phone 7’s on-board Facebook app. With just 117, 256 people hopping onto the social network, things aren’t looking too rosy for Microsoft.

Of those, 83,646 accessed Facebook on Windows Phone 7 using the Facebook app available in Marketplace. The remaining customers opted to use the Facebook skills baked into the device.

Facebook acts as a good indicator of user numbers because of its huge popularity and high install base. And of course, there’s a chance there are more phones packing Windows Phone 7 out there. However, these figures will hardly make happy reading for the Big M at a time when Android and iOS remain rampant and webOS is resurgent.

Have you bought a Windows Phone? Tell us what you think of these figures on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Jobs: Airplay coming to Safari and apps in 2011

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 01:09 AM PST

AirPlay currently shut out from third party add-ons and iOS browser.

Steve Jobs has said that 2011 will see an update to AirPlay which will bring support for videos in Safari and third party apps, letting you stream clips to Apple TV. Currently, AirPlay only handles regulars videos from iOS’s iPod and can’t even stream shots you’ve taken yourself on your iPhone.

Jobs was asked by a MacRumors reader when the issue with Safari and third party apps would be available. In reply, he said, “Yep, hope to add these features to AirPlay in 2011”.

As ever with the turtle-necked one’s missives, it’s short and sweet. But at least Apple is looking to solve the rather glaring omission from its headline iOS 4.2 feature.

Have you been using AirPlay? Will these changes make it worthwhile or are you happy with it as is? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Acer Windows Phone 7 plans revealed

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 12:05 AM PST

No release date revealed, but Acer clearly fancies a slice of the Microsoft action.

Acer’s recent rash of stunning new tablets, plus its killer Iconia laptop, have got us jonesing for more tech treats from the giant gadget maker. And now boss Gianfranco Lanci has confirmed that his people are working on an Acer Windows Phone 7 mobile.

In an interview with All Things D, Lanci said, “Today we are mainly Android, but we are also working on Windows Phone 7.”

Warming to his theme, Lanci went on to say that, “We saw a lot of limitations on Windows Phone a couple of years ago and we moved to Android because of user experience… if we look at Windows Phone 7, today, I think we see the same opportunity you can see on Android in terms of customization [sic].”

The latter is interesting, especially as Microsoft has been keen to stress that custom skins are not welcome on its new mobile OS. Lanci was less forthcoming about when an Acer Windows Phone 7 mobile would land. Here’s hoping it’ll come packing that new software update we heard about yesterday.

PlayStation Move hits 4.1 million

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 11:39 PM PST

Sony says number reflects units shifted to stores, not units sold.

Sony has come out firing again in its battle with Microsoft, this time saying it’s shifted a whacking 4.1 million Move controllers worldwide since the system made its debut back in February.

In a self-congratulatory release, timed no doubt to gazump Microsoft’s confirmation that it had flogged 2.5 million Kinects in 25 days, Sony said, “The number not only shows clear success of the launch of the new motion sensing controller but also indicates positive momentum going in to the holiday season and to the year 2011.”

However, confusion his risen as to just how the Big S reached that 4.1 million figure and what it actually means. Joystiq has found out that the stat actually covers the number of Move controllers shipped to stores and online gadget emporiums, not the number sold across the planet.

Sony said, “While we don't disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales." Is it? We'd have thought actual sales were a better indicator of success.

And then there’s the small matter of how many homes actually have Move. While Kinect’s figures can easily reflect how many homes have got one, Move cannot seeing as you need more than one controller for multiplayer. Engadget has discovered that 75 per cent of those sold are bundled.

Still, Move is clearly doing the business. But with its less than clear initial statement, has Sony been caught out in its attempt to win the phoney war with Microsoft? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
