News@8pm: Apple 3D and Google TV UK launch

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Tech giant Apple has thrown its weight behind the 3D movement after being awarded a patent for a glasses-free 3D projection system which allows users to view 3D content from any viewing angle. Well, you couldn’t really see Jonathan Ive and Steve Jobs taking to the stage in those cumbersome glasses, could you? Apple’s slow burner Ping will be willingly cast into the spotlight after it secured the exclusive premiere of Michael Jackson’s posthumously released track, ‘Much Too Soon’. If you needed reminding, Ping offers users the opportunity to follow their favourite artist and share playlists.

Microsoft has given the official stamp to its Xbox Live Rewards scheme in the UK. It offers gamers the chance to bank free MS points whenever they renew memberships, make certain purchases or take surveys. In MS world, points mean virtual cash prizes for whatever takes your fancy. One of Xbox’s biggest success stories, Halo: Combat Evolved, is being given an HD quality makeover in 2011 to celebrate a decade of the Halo brand, according to sources.

The BBC has confirmed that it will roll out a colossal US launch of iPlayer based on a subscription model. No surprises for guessing the first platform to get a taste, yes, it's the iPad. The service has been pegged for a mid-2011 launch. Another TV manufacturer offering Festive cheer is LG, who have teamed up with Sky to offer £300 off a few of their top-end 3DTV models. The only pre-requisites are that you are Sky subscriber and you buy from an approved retailer.

Sony will launch its Google TV service early next year. Sources in Sony have said it will start shipping Internet TVs exclusively in Spring. Google TV aims to integrate web video, regular TV and regular websites. In more news from Mountain View, Google has announced it will be making Google Doodles compatible with smartphone browsers. The only minor snag is phones will have to be running Apple iPhone iOS 3.0 or Android devices, running 2.0 or later.

Xbox 360 turns five in the UK

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 09:13 AM PST

Has the PlayStation rivalry only been going for that long?

Microsoft is celebrating five years since it launched the Xbox 360 in the UK, just ten days after marking the arrival of the console in the US.

The PlayStation rival which launched in 2005, heralded the introduction of HD gaming, Xbox LIVE Party, online achievements and more recently, controller-free gaming with Microsoft Kinect.

Worldwide sales of the Xbox 360 have hit 45 million according to Microsoft, but the console has not been without its problems, notably having left gamers staring at the dreaded RROD (Red Ring Of Death).

The latest incarnation of the Xbox, the Xbox 360 S brought us a substantially slimmer console that Microsoft also said was 'whisper quiet".

Earlier this year, Microsoft revealed that a successor to the 360, referred to as the Xbox 720, was not on the way yet, and with Kinect likely to extend the life of the current console further, the wait for a new Xbox could be set to go on a little longer.

Apple patent glasses-free 3D display technologies

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 07:38 AM PST

Patent granted for glasses-free 3D Apple display

Cupertino-based computer giant Apple has been awarded a patent for a glasses-free 3D projection system that through ‘auto-stereoscopic’ technologies would allow users to view 3D content from any viewing angle.

The patent, known simply as the “three-dimensional display system” intends to offer: “highly effective, practical, efficient, uncomplicated and inexpensive auto-stereoscopic 3D displays that allow the observer complete and unencumbered freedom of movement.”

With 3D technologies continuing to rise in popularity and availability, it is unsurprising that Apple would target such a market and would want to further the technology’s development by removing the limiting and cumbersome 3D glasses that are currently necessary.

The patented technology would according to Apple use a special reflective screen featuring a rippled texture which will create the auto-stereoscopic projection system. It goes on to claim that multiple images could be projected to different points on the rippled surface allowing multiple users to view the same footage from multiple positions simultaneously.

What current Apple products would you like to see given a 3D makeover, iPhone, iPad, Mac? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Halo: Combat Evolved to be given HD remake next year

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 06:43 AM PST

343 Industries replace Bungie for Halo remake

Microsoft is preparing to remake the original Halo title with developer 343 Industries taking the reigns from the departed franchise creator Bungie, new reports suggest.

Games Master has suggested in a recent article that 343 Industries’ first Halo project for Microsoft will be to recreate Halo: Combat Evolved, a title that was first released back in 2001 for the original Xbox console.

Whilst Halo 4 has been pegged with a 2012 release, it is believed that the HD quality, 360-bound remake of Halo: Combat Evolved could touch down next autumn to celebrate a decade of the Halo brand.

The first downloadable content pack for Halo: Reach, the franchise’s latest instalment, was released earlier this week bringing three new map areas to the title released in September.

Anti-gay app removed from App Store, Christians kick-off

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 05:52 AM PST

Ah, right wing American Christians... gotta love 'em.

An anti-gay iPhone application has been chucked-out of the App Store, prompting conservative Christians in the United States to demand a personal explanation from Steve Jobs.

The Manhattan Declaration is a 5,000 document that opposes same sex marriage and abortion, with the app asking downloaders if they "believe in the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman."

However, the campaign's attempt to spread the word via the iPhone has been shut down by Apple which deems the application to be offensive.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said the app "violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people."

The decision came after a wave of protests from gay bloggers and activists claiming that the application spread hate. However, Apple's decision to remove the app has prompted outrage from those good ol' Evangelical Christians who seem to hate pretty much everything.

News network CNN today reported that: "Chuck Colson, a former aide to President Richard Nixon turned evangelical leader, said Wednesday that he was disappointed in the decision and because Apple had declined to respond to his requests for an explanation.

"Colson and two other Declaration letters sent a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Monday to ask that the app be reinstated. A spokeswoman for Apple had no further comment for CNN."

Makes a change from boob-apps being banned...

Sony Google TV UK launch set for early 2011

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 03:58 AM PST

UK Internet TV steps closer with Sony Google TV leak

Sony is set to launch Google TV into the UK early next year as part of its Internet TV brand.

The company plans to ship products such as the Sony Internet TV and Blu-Ray player with integrated Google TV by early Spring 2011, according to a Sony source.

“We’ll launch in spring 2011”, the source told T3, “There will be an exclusive period of Google TV with Sony until April by which time competitors will start to launch their products.”

Although exact times are yet to be confirmed, the timing looks set to be a UK market scoop for Sony, in spite of keen competition from a host of other manufacturers such as Logitech.

Logitech recently launched their US-only solution the Logitech Revue, which T3 saw in an exclusive preview, but UK dates have been elusive so far.

In the US, Sony offers Sony Internet TV’s in 24-inch, 32-inch, 40-inch, and 46-inch models, and prices range from $599.99 to $1,399.99.

Google TV aims to integrate web video, regular TV and regular websites.

Google Doodles to become smartphone compatible

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 03:36 AM PST

Google brings much loved Doodles to mobile platforms

Google is to make its popular Google Doodles compatible with smartphone browsers the internet search giant has announced.

Whilst there have been a select number of mobile friendly doodles to date kicking off with the celebration of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the vast majority of Doodles are currently limited to desktop browsers and have become a hit with users since their arrival in 1998 in a creation crafted by the site’s founders.

"Today, we’re happy to announce that we’re bringing more doodles to your phone" declared Google.

Steve Kanefsky, Software Engineer at Google added: "While we’ve had oodles of Google doodles on our desktop homepage since Larry and Sergey created our very first in 1998, doodles on our mobile homepage have been few and far between.”

Smartphone users keen to fill their handsets with some Doodled Google idents will need an Apple iPhone running iOS version 3.0 or above or an Android powered device filled with 2.0 or later.

What has been your favourite Google Doodle to date? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BBC iPlayer set for subscription-based US launch

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 03:12 AM PST

Punters will need to pay fees, but ads coming later.

The BBC has confirmed that next year’s global launch of its colossal iPlayer will be based on a subscription model. And what’s more, the first platform to get a taste of the international iPlayer will be the iPad.

Broadcast reports that the BBC’s Luke Bradley-Jones speaking at the Digital TV Summit, said, “I can announce here that we’re going to be adopting a pure paid subscription model for the global iPlayer for launch”.

He went on to add, “We will also offer advertisers the chance to partner with us on the ‘free’ areas of the service.” The US will be among the first countries to get a taste of iPlayer away from these shores, with the service pegged for a mid-2011 launch.

The BBC says this will be on the iPad at first, although the chances are this will spread its wings once the offering takes off.

Apple premieres latest Michael Jackson song on Ping

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 02:53 AM PST

Michael Jackson track exclusive to Ping for one week

Apple has given the new Michael Jackson song an exclusive premiere via its social music service Ping.

The exclusive airing of the posthumously released track ‘Much Too Soon’ is Apple’s latest effort to push the slow starting Ping into the public consciousness following its unveiling alongside the latest generation of iPods.

Exclusively available on Ping for a week, news of the Jackson track’s location was announced on the King of Pop’s official website. Having failed to secure a much wanted partnership with Facebook, Apple’s Ping service was launched in September offering users the opportunity to follow their favourite artists and share playlists.

Jackson’s latest track release follows the outing of two singles last month, ‘Hold My Hand’ and ‘Breaking News’ ahead of the release of the full album ‘Michael’ on December 14th in time for the Christmas chart rush.

Does Ping have the longevity to survive or will it shortly fall by the wayside? Share your thoughts on the Apple music service via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

FroYo now on most Android phones

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 11:53 PM PST

Figures show Android still fragmented as Gingerbread pops its head round the corner.

Android 2.2 FroYo is now sitting pretty on most phones using Google’s mobile OS. That’s according to stats straight from Mountain View, which also show that while Android 2.x has taken hold, a worrying number of phones are still stranded on last year’s editions of the operating system.

The full breakdown as 2.2 FroYo on 43.4 per cent, 2.1 Eclair on 39.6 per cent, while Android 1.6 and 1.5 users still account for 16.9 per cent of the phones out there. Still, with 83 per cent on the Android 2.x, at least most punters are getting to grips with the very latest features.

These numbers are expected to change, however, with the arrival of Gingerbread 2.3 in the next few weeks. But with FroYo having taken so long to rollout on devices packing custom skins, expect the changes to be gradual.

Motorola primes mobile streaming box for CES

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 11:30 PM PST

Home only access for now, but big plans to stream cloud content to wherever you are.

Motorola has given gadget fanatics a sneak peek of what they can expect from them when CES hits Vegas in January. The mobile maker has unveiled plans for a new mobile streaming box, which will fire video to tablets and phones.

Rather than pulling content from your PC or external hard drive though, it’ll serve up clips over the cloud. Moto says that at first you’ll be limited to watching vids at home while it hammers out TV deals so you can watch shows via the box wherever you are.

There’s no word yet on price, or what shows you’ll get, but Moto’s execs reckon this is the beginning of an inevitable meet-up between mobile phones and set top boxes. One even said that TV providers could offer this new slab of smarts as an incentive to stay on board and not switch supplier.

A smart move or something you could do without? You tell us on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
