News@8pm: Apple patent tablet hybrid and Sony PS2 TV Posted: 03 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Apple has been patenting again. This time it has been caught working on a laptop come tablet hybrid, featuring, get this, a traditional keyboard and transformable sliding display. Sounds very interesting. In more news from the Cupertino Compound, iOS 4.3 is due to be launched on December 9. Headline news will surely be that the update contains a revamped App Store that will allow apps to be sold on a subscription basis. One Apple product that will be consigned to Apple back catalogue, will be the compact wired keyboard that is sold with the current iMac line. Apparently sales weren't too bonny. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Android fans will be pleased to know that 2.3 OS or Gingerbread as it's commonly known has appeared on Google Hong Kong. Rumoured to be the first to pack the latest version of the Android software is the Nexus S, but despite numerous sightings, Google has yet to confirm when it will land. This news will only serve to infuriate T-Mobile’s Galaxy S owners, who yet again, have had their hopes dashed of a bump up from Android 2.1 to 2.2 FroYo. T-Mobile also let slip that punters would install a manual upgrade, rather than the simple over-the-air version.
The iPad price-wars seem to get more intense by the day. Three have now announced that iPads will be available for as little as £199. That’s the price for the entry-level 16GB Apple iPad Wi-Fi +3 number, as long as you take out their two-year, £15 a month data deal to get your hands on one of the nation's favourite gadgets. One media giant at the forefront of the iPad revolution is The Guardian who have disclosed that they have an iPad app currently under development. They will also be revamping their iPhone app to replace the existing offering with lots of improved features.
Sony have unveiled a brand, spanking new 22-inch LCD Bravia TV with an inbuilt PS2. The Japanese giant are hoping to tap into retro gamers ahead of the Festive period by dangling added connectivity options, including four HDMI slots, and three USB ports and an Ethernet port. What’s not to like. Sony’s South Korean friends and Samsung’s have announced that their Smart TV apps, passed the key one million downloads mark. They were as bold to say that they would gallop past the 6.5 million mark by the end of 2011. Don’t hide your lights under a bushel we say.

Apple iPad Wi-Fi +3G just £199 on Three Mobile Posted: 03 Dec 2010 08:39 AM PST £199 iPads available from Three pre-Christmas Having announced last month that it was to offer cut priced iPads ahead of Christmas, Three Mobile has produced figures to that effect with the Apple tablet available for as little as £199.
The subsidised 16GB storage Apple iPad Wi-Fi + 3G comes in at a shade under the £200 mark when taken with a two year, £25 per month fixed term contract that includes 15GB of monthly data. The 32GB and 64GB storage capacity iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models are to cost £249 and £349 respectively on the same monthly deal.
On the Pay As You Go front, Three is to offer 1GB of data for use in a 30 day period for £10 or 3GB within the same timeframe for £20. 1GB and 10GB rolling contracts will set takers back £7.50 and £15 per month respectively.

Guardian iPad app incoming, iPhone app now £3.99 a year Posted: 03 Dec 2010 07:20 AM PST Paywall going up before Christmas with iPhone release. The Guardian has revealed it is working on a new app for the Apple iPad and updating its iPhone app, to include videos and a live football scores service
The left-leaning broadsheet says the new iPad app is currently in development and is "aiming high and hoping to steal a march on news-oriented apps already available."
The new iPhone app, which is going to cost £3.99 for a year's subscription or £2.99 for six months, will replace the existing offering from The Guardian and will serve up award winning video content and a landscape reading option. As well as the aforementioned live football scores service, there'll be acess to reader comments as well as faster access to blogs.
The Guardian is aiming for a pre-Christmas release for the iPhone app with no news on when the exciting iPad app will arrive. The Guardian Eyewitness app for the Apple tablet has already been a big success.

Sony launches 22-inch LCD TV with inbuilt PlayStation 2 Posted: 03 Dec 2010 06:52 AM PST PS2 resurrected for new LCD TV Sony has unveiled a new 22-inch LCD Bravia TV with an inbuilt PS2 as the Japanese company targets retro gamers ahead of the Christmas period.
With the recently released Gran Turismo 5 currently pushing sales of the Sony PlayStation 3, its now dated predecessor has been resurrected and built into the base of the new Sony Bravia KDL-22PX300 to offer former PS2 fans a new chance to break out their classic gaming titles.
As PS3 consoles haven’t been PS2 back compatible for some time, the KDL-22PX300, available to buy in the UK now for a smidge under £200, will allow gamers to once again enjoy the games and console that was once so dominant.

Apple patent outlines upcoming laptop tablet hybrid Posted: 03 Dec 2010 04:43 AM PST Sliding screen Apple laptop incoming? Latest Apple patent revelations have revealed the company is working on a laptop come tablet hybrid featuring a traditional keyboard and transformable sliding display.
Following ideas similar to the Dell Duo in a patent entitled “Application Programming Interfaces for Scrolling Operations”, Apple has outlined a "laptop device [that] can be converted into a tablet device” alongside images or a sliding screened concept.

Whilst the Application Programming Interfaces for Scrolling Operations patent might not cover the screen sliding form factor depicted by the accompanying images, Apple outlined in their successful application: "It will be evident that various modifications may be made thereto without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the disclosure as set forth in the following claims.“
The company added: “The specification and drawings are, accordingly, to be regarded in an illustrative sense rather than a restrictive sense.”

Android 2.3 OS pictured in official Google video Posted: 03 Dec 2010 04:00 AM PST New Android update finally on the way? An official video showing off Android 2.3 has appeared on Google Hong Kong as we await the official launch of Google's latest OS update.
The footage which you can see below, showed what appears to be a Nexus One device demonstrating Voice Search in Cantonese.
Changes with the user interface and status bar are notable in the video, but crucially it's a sign that Gingerbread is in development.
Tipped to launch last month, the rumoured Nexus S was spotted running Android 2.3 but Google have yet to confirm when the OS will land.
Eric Schmidt revealed at the Web 2.0 Summit in November that it would be coming out "in the next few weeks," so we hold out hope we can tuck into Gingerbread for Christmas.

T-Mobile Galaxy S update delayed again Posted: 03 Dec 2010 03:24 AM PST Upgrade had been expected today. T-Mobile has put the brakes on its planned Android 2.2 FroYo upgrade for Samsung Galaxy S users, pushing the update back until at least next week according to one report.
Word is that the network had planned the boost to FroYo today. It comes a day after Google confirmed most of its phones now have Android 2.2 on board, but also means T-Mobile punters could be getting the boost just days before the next version of Android, 2.3 Gingerbread, gets official.
What’s more punters will not be getting an over-the-air upgrade, instead needing to plug in their phones and download the software at home. That’s poor form for users on the move.
Tired of waiting for FroYo? What do you think Google should do to force networks and mobile makers into moving quicker? Give us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Angry Birds Seasons launches for iPhone and iPad Posted: 03 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST Angry Birds gets wintry iOS makeover Following its arrival on Android handsets earlier this week, the iPhone and iPad editions of Angry Birds Seasons have launched bringing festive bird-flinging fun to iOS.
Whilst owners of the Halloween Angry Birds edition will beable to add the Christmas-themed levels in a free update, unlike Android users who can download the full release free of charge from the Android Market or GetJar, new wannabe iOS owners will have to fork out 59p for the iPhone version or £1.19 for the HD iPad creation.
Adding to the Yule tide frivolities brought by snow covered levels and Christmas inspired pig hideaways, Angry Birds developers Rovio Mobile has announced the app is to feature “25 daily surprises for fans of Angry Birds to enjoy while counting down the days until Christmas".
Have you already brought the short tempered Christmassy birds to your iOS touting device? Let us know what you think of Angry Birds Seasons via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Apple kills off compact wired keyboard Posted: 03 Dec 2010 02:00 AM PST Lack of number pad does for wired effort. Apple’s compact wired keyboard, unveiled last year with its current iMac line, has been given the chop by Steve Jobs. The accessory failed to take off as it lacked a number pad on the right hand side.
A similar wireless version is still up for grabs for the hefty price of £56. Alternatively, you can nab the wired version with digits for £39.
The add-on now displays the sign, “Discontinued product,” when you search for it on the Apple store, although third parties still have some if you’re desperate for some small time wired keyboard action. Let’s face it, who isn’t?

Eee PC set to be battered by tablets in 2011 Posted: 03 Dec 2010 01:02 AM PST Tablets to blame for slid in interest in bargain bucket PCs. The Eee PC revolution looks like it could well be over. The little lappie, which started a race to the bottom among PC makers, is set to lose 25 per cent in sales in 2011 as tablets pick up the slack.
According to Digitimes, estimates suggest 4.5 million Eee PCs will fly off shelves in 2011, compared to six million in 2010. Last year Asus flogged a massive 6.8 million of the little blighters.
Industry insiders told the Taiwanese site that tablets were clearly to blame. Asus has its own line of slates ready, but with the iPad marching on and Android efforts about to break cover, it’s going to have a job convincing punters that a netbook is the way to go.
Netbook or tablet? Or do you think there’s room for both? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 11:45 PM PST 5 megapixel camera round the back, plus tablet also touted. Nokia’s MeeGo might have been pushed back into 2011, but that isn’t going to stop us getting het up about any tidbits regarding the spanking new OS.
The latest gossip centres around this spy shot, snapped over in Russia, which shows a phone made by unknown gadget purveyor Hi/Lo Vibrant. As well as clearly coming with MeeGo on board, word is it also packs in an Intel Atom processor. That would certainly make sense seeing as MeeGo is a joint venture between the chip maker and Nokia.
The phone also rocks a 5 megapixel camera. And what’s more, the Russian journo who saw it also said he caught sight of a MeeGo tablet too. Now that’s a tasty bit if gossip.
