Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet undercuts iPad 2

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 01:17 PM PDT

Tablet price war means deals galore for eagle-eyed consumers

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer can now be bought for only £361, undercutting the entry-level iPad2 16GB Wi-Fi by a tasty £38.

If you're interested, you’ll need to move quickly as the offer runs at Comet until April 13 but it includes free delivery and £18 cashback on the suggested RRP. Just enter the code 5OFF for your saving.

While it may not have the desirability of its ubiquitous rival, the Eee Pad's specs hold up pretty well. Running on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, it has a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC running at 1GHz, 1GB RAM and a passable 16GB of onboard storage for your multimedia needs.

Other features include HDMI, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing one. Fully charged, the battery manages a respectable eight hours. If you want the keyboard docking station thrown in, it’ll bump up the price to £407. The accessory can provide with an additional eight hours battery life as well as two USB ports.

Its more expensive rivals include the Motorola Xoom and the Acer Iconia A500, both of which will be vying for space in the increasingly cluttered Android tablet marketplace.

Motorola Atrix gets Everything Everywhere exclusive

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 09:57 AM PDT

O2, Three and Vodafone customers will have to wait

The Motorola Atrix has reportedly been hoovered up as an Everything Everywhere exclusive. Details are still sketchy on when the Atrix will make it to Blighty – it’s already been released Stateside – but for all those Orange and T-Mobile customers looking for a new uber-handset, the wait is nearly over.

While analysts have reported a slow take-up on the Motorola Atrix and its bigger tablet brother, the Xoom, across the pond, there’s no doubt its functionality sets it apart from run-of-the mill smartphones.

Of course, the Atrix can exist confidently as a dual-core toting, FroYo tasting smartphone, but interestingly it aims to bridge the gap between a phone and a computer with three docks.

The Laptop Dock comes with an 11.6-in attachable screen and keyboard, while the Media Dock allows for a seamless connection to big HD screens. Lastly there’s a Desk Dock, which charges the handset.

Inside the phone there’s 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 960 x 540 high-resolution qHD display. The handset is expected to run on Android 2.2 but there should be an update to Gingerbread, arriving in the very near future.

Are you looking forward to getting your hands on an Atrix? Let us know what you think of this story on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

HTC unveils record profits, passes Nokia

HTC post record profits for Q1 in 2011

HTC have cantered past Nokia to become the world’s third largest phone manufacturer by market value. Boosted by their early uptake of the Android platform, they posted an eye-watering $3.6 billion in revenue for their Q1 results.

In figures to bring much, obviously understated, whooping and hollering from Taiwan, their record Q1 net income nearly tripled what they achieved this time last year. It doesn’t take Einstein to figure out that the public’s lusting for Android phones is behind the vast leap in profits and with the Flyer, HTC’s first tablet, just about to hit the marketplace, analysts are predicting the company’s success won’t be short lived.

This news will be sure to bring more anxiety in the corporate sauna’s at Nokia’s Finnish HQ, where the pressure on the company to make a success of their love-in with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile becomes ever more acute.

Now we can’t imagine HTC, which prides itself on its ‘quietly brilliant’ ethos, will throw off the shackles and shout out their achievement from the rooftops at Tuesday’s press event, can we?

Can Nokia catch HTC in the battle for smartphone supremacy? Let us know on T3’s Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned in for the latest tech news.
