Tech Week: HTC Sensation unveiled and iPad 3 rumours

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
HTC's new flagship handset has been the talk of tech town this week with the Taiwanese company officially unveiling the 1.2GHz dual-core HTC Sensation at a London-based press conference on Tuesday afternoon. Hours before the device was formerly unveiled, however, Vodafone leaked the Sensation, full specs and all, taking away some of the surprise. Following the device's arrival and in response to Vodafone's faux pas, Orange, O2, Three and T-Mobile all announced they will stock the HTC Sensation in June following the leaky red network's launch exclusivity.

Sticking with the new HTC device and a new revamped 3.0 version of the HTC Sense UI was unveiled alongside the HTC Sensation bringing a bevy of new features such as a smart app-touting lockscreen and 3D widgets to the popular skin. Whilst HTC's Android fans were excited by the arrival an official HTC announcement stating Sense 3.0 would not hit old devices later disappointed before the company flip-flopped on its own remarks stating the features of the UI would be available to existing handsets

Apple's brushed under the carpet flop that never was, the white iPhone 4 looks set to finally be making it to market after analysts and sources close to the matter 'promise' the white iPhone 4 will launch this month. A bold claim that we can only hope comes to life. This was later backed up by the Wall Street Journal which claimed Apple confirmed the white iPhone 4 will land in April.

One in five smartphones NFC-enabled by 2014, says report

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Cash? What's that?

According to data revealed by Juniper Research, one in five smartphones will have Near Field Communication (NFC) technology by 2014.

Juniper Research's forecast figures suggest that there will be 300 million NFC capable smartphones by 2014 all over the world. They foresee a quick adoption of the NFC technology by smartphone users.

Juniper’s analysis shows that this growth will be driven in the short term by mobile network operators launching services in 20 early adopting countries before the end of 2012.

Their data also points to France being the leader, followed by US and UK as the markets which will see early adoption of the technology.

"Juniper's market analysis highlighted that, although there are still hurdles ahead, NFC prospects have been boosted by the succession of mobile operator and device vendor announcements," said author Howard Wilcox.

"France is a case in point where operators expect to sell one million NFC devices this year," he added.

North America will account for half of all NFC smartphones by 2014, followed by Western Europe.

Nintendo Wii 2 with HD and touchscreen controller at E3?

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 04:38 AM PDT

Find out soon whether the Nintendo Wii 2 will be HD or not.

Rumours are rife that a completely new Nintendo Wii 2 will make its appearance at E3 2011 in June.

It's also being said that the Nintendo Wii 2 controller will have an HD screen on it, suggesting Ninty may have just listened to what T3 readers had to say about it.

Said to be more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, CVG has quoted a source, who said: "Nintendo's plans sound unreal. Publishers are already planning launch titles and it's all very exciting."

"The hardware is even more powerful than current HD consoles and backwards compatible with Wii. The controller will be all-new and has a HD screen on it," the source continued.

Will the heir of the Nintendo Wii is unveiled at E3? In addition, more rumours are spreading about a 2012 launch date.

There has been no official comment yet on the unveiling or launch of the Nintendo Wii 2.

Battlefield 3 needs 1 million "likes" to unlock new trailer

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 03:54 AM PDT

Do you like Battlefield 3 enough?

If you want to see the next Battlefield 3 trailer a day ahead of schedule, you need to hit "like" on its Facebook page.

EA and DICE are giving eager gamers an incentive to like their page because if they hit 1 million likes before April 17, then a 12-minute trailer and a producer's commentary will be unlocked for fans.

Landing on the Battlefield 3 page will show you a graphic that says "Mission: Like the page to help unlock the full trailer and producer's commentary early."

While these trailers will be unlocked by April 17 anyway, it's an interesting social media marketing tactic used by them.

Currently, the number of likes the Facebook page for Battlefield 3 has received stands at near 760K, so it's just one-quarter away from the magic number of 1 million.

Battlefield 3 will be released towards the end of 2011 for PC,PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

What do you think about EA's social media campaign? Let us know at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and feel free to like us on Facebook to get more tech news coming your way.

Google Panda update for search rolled out globally

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 02:30 AM PDT

The Google Panda has updated its search algorithm; does it work?

The Google 'Panda' update that's supposed to change the search algorithm to weed out content farms has been rolled out to UK websites as well.

The official Google blog says that since introducing the algorithm change, Google has received "a lot of positive responses about the change" and so now they've rolled out the Panda to all English-language Google users.

Amit Singhal, Google Fellow, said, "Based on our testing, we’ve found the algorithm is very accurate at detecting site quality."

He also added that if anyone's website has been negatively impacted by the change to ensure the website is checked to follow Google's quality guidelines. "If you believe your site is high-quality and has been impacted by this change, we encourage you to evaluate the different aspects of your site extensively. Google's quality guidelines provide helpful information about how to improve your site."

The Guardian links to a list of websites that have been hit by the new search algorithm and while we see a lot of content farms, tech websites also feature in the list, including sister website TechRadar. Other websites similarly hit include PocketLint, Electric Pig, PC Advisor and ITProPortal. Even Play.com has suffered a fall in Google rankings.

In another surprise hit is Microsoft's Ciao, a shopping comparison website. The Guardian reports that Ciao's rank has fallen by almost 94% due to the new search algortihm.

Content farms such as Ehow and About.com have also been negatively affected by the Panda update, which means we won't be seeing them high up on Google Search results.

Websites on the list of search winners include Google's YouTube, Mashable, the Independent and Vimeo.

The update will be tested but we can eventually expect it to be seen in other languages as well.

Do you think the Google algorithm update is doing its job? Let us know what you think over at our Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for the latest tech updates regardless of whether we're hit by a Panda.
