Adobe announces Photoshop Touch apps for Apple iPad

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 09:17 AM PDT

Are we getting closer to that full version of Photoshop for iPad?

Adobe is bringing an update to its CS5 suite to allow Photoshop to play nice with iOS devices wirelessly, moving us closer to a full Photoshop app for iPad.

The upgrade, CSS 5.5, will feature three Photoshop Touch apps, Eazel, Color Lava and Nav, each of which will allow users to communicate wirelessly with devices like the Apple iPad, with Android and BlackBerry compatibility on the cards too.

Effectively these apps, to be released sometime in May, turn the iPad into a touchscreen control system for you desktop photo editing and even allow you to create new colours and paintings to use in your Photoshop creations.

The first app, Photoshop Touch Nav will allow you to create a control palette on your iPad with all of your favourite tools, create new files, zoom in up to 200 per cent on your images, open documents from your iPad directly on your desktop version of Photoshop. Your PC mouse is already looking enviously at this app.

The second app Eazel, is a pretty nifty finger-painting application on the surface of the iPad's touchscreen and then send them directly to Photoshop, where they'll be rendered at a higher resolution. A cool feature of this app is the ability to create a blend of wet and dry digital paint.  You can also control the brush size, colour and opacity by placing all five fingers on the screen at the same time, which will summon the menus.

The final app of the three is called Color Lava allows you to mix colours and experiment, like on a real palette, and save them for use on your Photoshop creations. You can also mix colours when you're away from your iPad and save them for use in Photoshop later.

All three apps will be available to download from the App Store in May for $2, $3 and $5 respectively. As well as these apps, Adobe is releasing a new Photoshop Touch SDK which will allow third party developers to have a crack at making their own tools for Photoshop.

While these tools are infinitely cool, we're still waiting for the full version of Photoshop for iPad that was teased at Photoshop world last month. That's the holy grail.

iPad 2 issues officially confirmed by Apple

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 07:42 AM PDT

Connectivity issues trouble Verizon iPad 2 launch

Apple has officially acknowledged there are issues with the recently released iPad 2 after scores of tablet users tethered to the Verizon network in the US report connectivity problems.

No stranger to well publicised problems following the antennagate media storm that hit the release of the iPhone 4, Apple has confirmed a “small number” of Verizon iPad 2 customers are experiencing connectivity issues with their recently purchased second-generation tablets and have begun actively investigating the troubles.

The problems, which have seen iPad 2 touting Verizon customers flooding message boards, were confirmed by an Apple spokeswoman who stated the company was pursuing a solution to the issues that surround difficulties with the tablet accessing the relevant 3G data networks.

The iPad 2 officially launched last month with the market dominating tablet adding a new dual-core processor, front and rear mounted cameras and a slimmer, lighter form factor for the second generation.

Have you already snapped up an iPad 2 or do you believe Android tablet hold more possibilities than the Apple device? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Mercedes A-Class concept sports dash-mounted tablet

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 07:18 AM PDT

Tablet visions for the aviation inspired A-Class

Mercedes-Benz has given us a glimpse into the future by showing off its A-Class concept car which notably includes a dash-mounted tablet.

- Mercedes-Benz A-Class pictures

With styling said to be inspired by "The wind and the waves, as well as aviation engineering" amongst other things, the A-Class will also have a  BlueEFFICIENCY 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood producing 210-horsepower, which should give it a significant grunt.

The German automakers having clearly not overlooked the growing prominence of tablets and as you can see from this Mercedes-Benz A-Class picture, have made enough room for an iPad for instance which looks well positioned when you need to tap in those directions into your satnav app.

Other innards to salivate over include a dual clutch transmission, Adaptive Brake Assist and a radar-based collision-detection system which should help reduce the chances of someone going into the back of your A-Class.

The A-Class concept is set to make an appearance at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month, so you can expect to hear more details about it in the very near future. You can check out the teaser video below to get a closer look at the sleek A-class concept.

Samsung Galaxy S II UK release confirmed as May 1st

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 07:11 AM PDT

Early May release given to Samsung's first dual-core blower

Samsung has officially announced that its first dual-core smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S II will launch in the UK on May 1st, ending speculation of long-term delays.

Officially unveiled during February’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, the Galaxy S II was last week revealed to be bumping its announced 1GHz dual-core processor up to a 1.2GHz dual-core offering in a bid to trump the emerging fleet of dual-core smartphones and tout the most impressive CPU.

Whilst the confirmation of an official release date will appease many wannabe Galaxy S II owners who feared a recent spate of rumours suggesting the phone was to be delayed, strangely Samsung’s chosen May 1st release will see the handset touch down on a Sunday. What’s more the Galaxy S II’s release will be directly followed by May Bank holiday in the UK meaning those keen to snap up the Galaxy S follow-up might well have to wait until Tuesday May 3rd.

Adding to its revamped 1.2GHz dual-core processor, the Samsung Galaxy S II will hit the UK with an impressive array of specs including a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, 8-megapixel rear mounted camera with 1080p Full-HD video recording capabilities, a second front-facing snapper and an impressive 8.9mm thin form factor.

Will the Samsung Galaxy S II be a dominant factor in the over crowded smartphone market? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Phones 4U to stock white LG Optimus 3D

LG’s upcoming 3D smartphone the LG Optimus 3D is to launch with a white form factor exclusive to Phones 4U in the UK, the retailer has revealed.

Announcing the white-hued exclusive as it makes the device available for wannabe owners to register for pre-release updates, Phones 4U has revealed the black Optimus 3D will land in its stores and online outlet “shortly after its UK launch” with the white model to follow in “the coming months.”

Officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February, the Optimus 3D is expected to touch down later this month sporting a 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D display similar to that found on the Nintendo 3DS and running Google’s Android 2.2, FroYo, operating system. A 2.3, Gingerbread, update is tipped to land shortly after.

The Optimus 3D’s spec sheet is to be completed by dual-lens 5-megapixel camera capable of generating 3D snaps and HD video content that can be ported to your 3DTV via the inbuilt HDMI port. All of this is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor.

“We’re delighted to announce that we’ll soon be offering our customers the world’s first ever 3D mobile phone in white,” said Phones 4U Marketing Director Russell Braterman. He added: "Our customers are content creators and sharers, and the LG Optimus 3D will for the first time allow them to do what they enjoy most, but in 3D."

Will the LG Optimus 3D and other 3D handsets take off or are 3D phones simply a passing fad? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Steve Wozniak considering Apple return in Jobs' absence

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 04:30 AM PDT

Wozniak would consider Apple return if asked

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has announced he would consider a return to the fruity tech company if asked despite wishing Apple products were more open.

Having founded Apple back in 1976 with the now talismanic front man Steve Jobs and Ronal Wayne, Wozniak, who is accredited with building the Apple I and Apple II computers, devices that revolutionised personal computing, stopping daily work for the tech giant in 1987 but remains on the company payroll.

Asked if he would adopt a more hands-on, active roll within the company if presented with the opportunity, Wozniak, speaking at a server conference in Brighton, said: “I’d consider it, yeah.”
Speaking on his opinion of Apple products since leaving the firm Woz said: "Unbelievable. The products, one after another, quality and hits." Believing he could still bring something to Apple he added: "There's just an awful lot I know about Apple products and competing products that has some relevance, some meaning.”

Although seemingly keen to make a return to Apple at some point in the future, co-founder Wozniak has criticised the closed-system Apple adopts, forcing users of its products to buy further content direct from Apple owned digital stores. He said: "My thinking is that Apple could be more open and not lose sales," diplomatically adding: "I'm sure they're making the right decisions for the right reasons for Apple."

Apple CEO and fellow co-founder Steve Jobs is currently undertaking a third medical leave of absence from the company since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004.

Which Apple co-founder would be provide the most to the company if they returned, Jobs or Wozniak? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Angry Birds has become the highest selling title on the PlayStation Network, less than three months after the bird-flinging app sensation hit the online outlet.

Topping the PSN charts, Angry Birds, the globally successful mobile application game from Finnish developers Rovio has made the jump to Sony’s hugely successful PS3 console platform via the PlayStation Network.

News that the Angry Birds release has topped the all time PSN sales charts comes from Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian, who, although failing to give precise figures for his claim, stated Angry Birds is now the most downloaded game in PSN history.

Speaking on the ever increasing popularity of the PSN service Sebastian added: "75M registered accounts WW (half of which are in NA), with over 1.4B pieces of content downloaded since launch."

Steve Jobs' official biography confirmed

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Apple boss has given official nod to project, which has been running since 2009.

Steve Jobs’s official biography will be released next year. Called iSteve: The Book of Jobs, it will be published by Simon & Schuster and has been written by Walter Isaacson, whose previous work includes books on Einstein, Benjamin Franklin and Henry Kissinger.

The book itself has been in progress since 2009, with the man himself giving time. There are also interviews with close friends, Apple staffers and even competitors. It’s the first time Jobs has given his seal of approval to a book detailing his life as the head of one of the world’s biggest companies.

There’s no doubting that iSteve, despite (or perhaps because of) its somewhat trashy title, will sell by the bucketload. Jobs’ myth has grown as Apple has gone from niche player to second-largest corporation on the planet.

What do you want to know about Steve Jobs? How he get turfed out of Apple in the 80s? What he really thinks of Google and Microsoft? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

HTC Flyer tablet pre-orders begin priced £600

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 02:47 AM PDT

Premium price tag given to HTC's 7-inch tablet

Retailers Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy have officially revealed they are to offer the upcoming HTC Flyer with the tablet device hitting pre-order today priced £599.99.

Coming in at a smidge under the £600 mark, HTC’s first foray into the tablet market, one that will land with a 7-inch form factor and the “HTC Scribe Pen” stylus will land more than £200 more than the entry level Apple iPad 2.

Equipped with 32GB of internal storage and full Wi-Fi + 3G capabilities, the Flyer, set to cost £20 more than the similar specced iPad 2 despite the Apple tablet sporting a 9.7-inch form factor, will feature a web browser fully compatible with Adobe Flash 10.2 footage, trumping its market dominating rival.

With a 5-megapixel camera around the rear and a second, 1.3-megapixel snapper up front, the Flyer will come equipped with Android 2.4, Gingerbread, with a Honeycomb update expected shortly after launch.

Although Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy has failed to reveal exactly when pre-orders will begin to ship, an official HTC press conference to be held in central London tomorrow, April 12th, is expected to reveal the release date for the Flyer, as well as out the repeatedly leaked HTC Pyramid come Sensation, a dual-core smartphone powerhouse.

Has the HTC Flyer been priced out of the tablet market wars with its £600 tag? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Bada 2.0 phones set to ship in Q4 2011

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 02:43 AM PDT

And your original Bada handset may get the update in July

Samsung’s Bada platform has seemingly been lying dormant for a while; its app count has been slowly building, but there’s been little in the way of new hardware or software updates for a while. Fret not, Bada owner: Bada 2.0 looks set to be landing in July and, if this roadmap is anything to go on, there’ll be a smattering of new handsets coming in Q4 this year.

The French table shows two upcoming Bada 2.0 phones. We’ve known about the Bada 1.1-running Wave 578, which is set for June, but the other two have come as a surprise. They’ll be out in Q4, packing NFC tech as standard.

The handset landing in September seems to be the flagship of the next Bada generation, with a 3.65-inch HVGA display and pair of cameras – a 5-Meg front and rear VGA. The November-bound model only sports a 3-Meg cam and a 3.14-inch QVGA display. Both handsets are currently unnamed.

Are you excited, or will Bada struggle to keep up? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

BlackBerry Orlando: Curve gets a touchscreen

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 02:08 AM PDT

BlackBerry bringing touchscreen to Curve model as part of wide-ranging shakeup.

Sure, you’ve already caught a glimpse of the BlackBerry Bold Touch. But if you’re not keen on a top-end ‘Berry, but do fancy a touchscreen with your QWERTY, RIM has something for you: the BlackBerry Orlando.

Somewhat idiotic moniker aside, the Orlando promises to be a great compromise for smartphone users. It rocks the same basic BlackBerry design as the Curve, but packs in a touchscreen as well, giving you the best of both worlds.

Confusingly, RIM is said to be working on a Curve Touch as well, dispensing with the physical keyboard completely. Chuck in two new non-touchscreen Curve-like models, the Sedona and Apollo, and you’ll see RIM really is looking to cover all bases.

Can the Orlando become as successful as the Curve? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Sony PSP price slashed

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 01:10 AM PDT

Sony says it's cutting PSP costs on continent, but can't do same in UK.

Sony has slashed the price of the PSP in continental Europe, with the handheld now costsing just €129.99 (£114) across the channel, down from €179.99. So does that mean British gamers are likely to feel the love too?

In a word, no. Sony says this is down to exchange rate pressures, explaining, "[The European price cut] has been made possible by favourable fluctuations in the exchange rate between the Euro and the Yen. Since we in the UK are vulnerable to two exchange rate calculations, pounds into Euros and Euros into Yen, we are not in a position to offer a similar cut in PSP for the UK.”

That means the console will remain at £129.99 on these shores. That’s disappointing seeing as the PSP now costs just $129 (£78) in the US. Although Sony’s handheld is outstripping the 3DS in Japan, surely a price cut here would help it stay on top of its new rival.

Sony gaming boss tears into Nintendo

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 11:53 PM PDT

SCEA exec doesn't mince his words in scathing attack on Nintendo.

Jack Tretton, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has launched a scathing attack on Nintendo, dismissing the Japanese gaming giant’s handhelds as “babysitting tools”.

Tretton, speaking to Fortune, said that Nintendo’s welter of best-selling handhelds only offered a “Game Boy experience”, nowhere near the hardcore gaming you can find on a PSP, or the forthcoming NGP.

What’s more Tretton claimed that, “…no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with a [3DS], he’s too old for that.” Tell that to the T3 staffers hunkered over the new console for every spare hour God sends.

While Ninty’s new handheld hasn’t set the world alight as it had hoped, Tretton is making a bold claim in dismissing his key handheld competitor outright. After all, this is the same man who last week said the Sony NGP could be delayed.
