iPhone app news: Homer Simpson on TomTom app

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 11:47 AM PDT

The world's favourite dad arrives on TomTom's navigation app.

Google Maps Navigation for Android might be both free and brilliant, but TomTom's iOS app has an ace up its sleeve, the voice of the legendary Homer Simpson pointing you in the right direction.

The TomTom for iPhone app costs an austerity-bucking price of £49.99 to download from the App Store, and you can acquire Homer - voiced by Simpson's actor Dan Castellaneta - for just £3.49 as an in-app purchase.

Unsurprisingly there's a few of cartoon patriarch's favourite sayings on-board, if you mess-up you'll be greeted with a "D'oh!" or a "Haha, you goofed"

Simpson joins Star Wars favourites, Darth Vader, Yoda and C3PO as available voices for TomTom's smartphone app although we're not sure we'd want the world's clumsiest man giving us directions.

"Homer Simpson is one of the most familiar and fondly recognised cartoon characters on the planet. So to have Homer become uniquely available for our TomTom App for iPhone is really thrilling for us," said TomTom's Alan Pakiry

"Homer's skills will help keep drivers and fans entertained in a light hearted and familiar way. It's exciting to have him on board!" he continued.

Gtalk Gmail video calling to launch with Android 2.3.4

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 08:54 AM PDT

Desktop version of in-house video calling to be announced at Google I/O?

Google seems set to release a new version of Gingerbread, Android 2.3.4, complete with video call functionality through Gmail.

An announcement at Google I/O appears likely with speculation in full swing after a Samsung-affiliated Twitter user tweeted, "Just had a video call using gmail on Nexus S. Impressive quality @googlenexus Gingerbread 2.3.4" with the hash-tag “io2011”.

Android 2.3 currently does have a proprietary video calling facility yet it can only be used to call Android phone-to-phone.

A desktop version, akin to Apple’s FaceTime app, is expected to follow with the revealed new feature allowing Android uses to video call desktop Gmail users and potentially non-Android phones with mobile Gmail.

The annual Google I/O developer conference is set to take place in San Francisco between May 10-11 however UK readers shouldn’t get too excited as last year’s Google Music and Google TV are both still to be released on our humble shores.

Are you excited about the latest version of Gtalk? Is Facetime more your bag? Tell us which you prefer via Facebook and Twitter.

White iPhone 4 release date imminent as stocks hit stores

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 08:21 AM PDT

Long overdue Apple handset hits retailers ahead of tomorrow's launch

Apple’s white iPhone 4 has started shipping ahead of its expected global launch tomorrow, April 27th, with stocks already landing with retailers.

Leaked via a snapped shot of the Best Buy inventory system and confirmed to us here at T3 by a reliable source close to the handset’s production, the white iPhone 4 will officially touch down tomorrow more than 10 months after its planned original release alongside the standard black model back in June 2010.

Adding further fuel to the fire of the imminent lighter hued handset’s arrival and seemingly backing up reports that Apple stores have already received stocks of the white iPhone 4, one Belgian retailer has released snapshots of their early arriving brightly toned Apple handsets.

Depicting both the 16GB and 32GB offerings of the market leading smartphone that was today confirmed as the UK’s most popular mobile handset, the Belgian iPhone leak is likely the last pre-emptive look at the long awaited device we will get ahead of its repeatedly delayed arrival.

Will the white iPhone 4 still grab interest in the smartphone market or has it missed its window? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

'Android still too fragmented,' claims app developer

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 07:32 AM PDT

Sports Interactive holds fire on tablet competition as bestseller comes to iPad

The Android operating system is too fragmented to be financially viable, Football Manager boss Miles Jacobson has told T3.

“Android looks a great operating system but there’s still too much fragmentation in the market and there’s not one direct route to sale, which is what makes the App Store so attractive,” said the Sports Interactive director as his bestselling football management game hits the iPad for the first time.

“There won’t be anything on Android for Football Manager 2011 and there might not be anything for Football Manager 2012,” he continued. “We’re taking a long-term view, and we’re taking the same view for Win7, meGo and other operating systems.”

Jacobson was also critical of the Amazon Android AppStore, which has been lambasted by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) for its aggressive terms and conditions on distribution, profit-sharing and price control.

“I agree with the IGDA’s stance, I’m not sure about the Amazon Android store at all. We have licensing fees which we have to pay per unit, so having someone able to sell it for less than we have to pay for our licenses makes it a little bit troublesome.”

Apple MacBook Pro range to get complete design overhaul

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 07:00 AM PDT

MacBook Pro next on Apple's design refresh list

The hugely popular range of MacBook Pro computers are to adopt a brand new look and form factor when the series is next updated, the range’s first design overhaul since 2008, new reports have revealed.

Last refreshed just a couple of months ago in February with the sleek, desirable devices becoming the first to come equipped with the new high speed Thunderbolt port, the MacBook Pro line is set to be on the receiving end of a full design update with one insider source reportedly claiming the refresh will mark a “milestone” in the MacBook Pro range.

Whilst details as to what the MacBook Pro redesign might entail remain firmly elusive, recent updates to Apple’s other computing devices such as the MacBook Air and iPad suggest new MacBook Pro devices could sport a considerably slimmer form factor and solid state drive storage.

News of a MacBook design overhaul come on the same day speculation grows around a refresh of the iMac range with shipping of current models currently pulled in anticipation of new devices beginning to ship on May 2nd.

Steve Jobs cited in Amazon App Store defence

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Case centres around whether the use of "app store" term is generic.

Amazon.com has vigorously defended its Android Appstore against Apple’s trademark infringement lawsuit citing a speech by Apple CEO Steve Jobs as part of their defence.

The Seattle-based online retailer today reasserted their claim the phrase “app store” is generic, as supposedly stated by Jobs in Apple’s fourth quarterly 2010 conference call, to a federal judge in San Francisco asking the official to throw out the case.

Speaking as part of the conference call Jobs referred repeatedly to “app stores” in a manner Amazon emphasize as non-specific.

“There will be at least four app stores on Android, which customers must search among to find the app they want,” said Mr Jobs.

Many companies are thought to have their eyes peeled on the result of the case. Windows is rumoured to be preparing an app store for its Windows 8 PC operating system, whilst adult app store Mikandi have also been sued for copyright infringement over the term.

Do you think the term “app store” is worthy of a mu;ti-million dollar legal dispute? Are companies entitled to protect their intellectual property? Let us know via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Portal 2 tops UK gaming charts as Xbox sales soar

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 06:14 AM PDT

PS3 release sales miss expectations as Portal 2 tops all platform charts

Valve’s Portal 2 release has topped UK gaming charts in its opening week as strong Xbox sales help take the puzzle game to the all-format top spot.

Accounting for a reported 54 per cent of all opening week Portal 2 sales, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console has seen fellow platform dominant title Call of Duty: Black Ops return to the podium taking up third position in the gaming charts behind Mortal Kombat.

With just 35 per cent of Portal 2 sales coming from the game’s PS3 release, Portal 2 could only achieve position two in the PS3 charts based on its opening week’s sales falling behind Warner’s Mortal Kombat with the continued PSN outage reportedly accounting for a chunk of this cross-platform sales difference.

Hip shaking dance release Zumba Fitness took fourth spot in the week’s gaming charts with Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars rounding out the top five ahead of Operation Flashpoint: Red River, FIFA 11 and Crysis 2 in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Wii Fit Plus and Homefront completed the top 10.

iPad 3 likely to feature quadcore processor

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 04:26 AM PDT

Android and tablet competition creating chip war as hardware changes

Apple’s iPad 3 will have to feature a quadcore processor in order to keep up with the tablet competition, Football Manager boss Miles Jacobson has told T3.

“I’d be very surprised if the iPad 3 didn’t have a quadcore processor and I’d expect it to have the graphic-card equivalent to the Nvidia 8700 series,” the Sports Interactive director said. “We have very good relationships with a lot of chipset and hardware manufacturers who’ve given us their roadmaps, and they’re drool-worthy.”

Sports Interactive’s bestselling football management game is finally available on Apple’s iPad platform, having enjoyed success on iPhone and iPod Touch already, but Jacobson sees the emerging tablet market as the one to watch.

“The iPad 2 is a fantastic device, and far and away the best tablet out there at the moment, but this market is changing more rapidly than any other chip war that I can remember,” he said. “Even when the PC market went up from dualcore to quadcore, there was a couple of years in between. I definitely think that within 18 months we’ll see quadcore processors and fancy-dan graphics cards in tablets, and it could even be by the end of the year.

“As a gadget geek myself, it’s fascinating. For the first time I’m actually sitting here not buying technology as I think something better is going to be round the corner. There will be a rash of devices this Christmas that will surprise people.”

Football Manager Handheld 2011 is out now on iPad for £6.99 from the App Store, but those who already own the iPhone or iPod Touch version can download the iPad version for free.

“We don’t have to be the first on a platform, but we do have to be the best,” added Jacobson. “We kind of ignored the iPad 1 as the iPhone version of Football Manager Handheld worked perfectly fine upscaled. But with the iPad 2, we saw it and went, ‘Hmm.’ It was a bit like playing a black and white game on a colour screen. It now goes like sh*t off a shovel. ”

Will we see quadcore processors landing in tablet devices by the year’s end or are dual-core offerings here for a while yet? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Amazon Cloud still recovering from crash

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 04:12 AM PDT

Doubts cast over viability of Cloud-based storage.

Amazon has claimed to have resolved the majority of technical faults that hit its Web Services business from Thursday evening onwards last week.

A glitch in one of the online storage business’ servers had resulted in the outage of several popular websites including Quora, Foursquare, Hootsuite and Reddit.

Although Amazon states it has completed its recovery efforts, the company has admitted it will be unable to restore a small portion of lost data.

Promising a “detailed first mortem” on its website yesterday, Amazon said it was “digging deeply” into the causes of the shutdown and it was “in the process of contacting” affected customers.

These difficulties highlight the perceived dangers of companies outsourcing their computing requirements to the “cloud” and the third party problem management issues that accompany such services.

Amazon did contain the problem to one zone approximately three hours after it started yet that will have been little help to companies who failed to spread their storage to multiple data centres leaving them vulnerable to a single outage.

Is the cloud’s future under threat from the Amazon crash? Are teething pains inevitable for such a service? Let us know via Facebook and Twitter.

Apple iPhone 4 tops UK's most popular handset charts

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 03:53 AM PDT

Android dominates as Apple tops UK handset charts with the iPhone 4

Apple’s iPhone 4 has claimed the top spot as the UK’s favourite mobile handset as HTC’s Desire series and Samsung’s Galaxy S range dominate the top five.

Having fallen out of favour with the UK’s smartphone buyer in recent months, Apple’s flagship iPhone 4 device has taken the crown as the UK’s most popular handset for April as Google’s Android operating system continues to increase its platform share, new figures from comparison site Switch have revealed.

Rising two places to take the top spot, Apple’s latest smartphone release has overtaken HTC’s leading releases with the HTC Desire HD taking second place ahead of the HTC Desire in third. Rounding out the top five and maintaining the dominance of a small number of brands is the Samsung Galaxy S II in forth and its predecessor the Samsung Galaxy S in fifth. A third Desire model, the HTC Desire S took eight spot.

The iPhone’s rise to top spot of the UK sales charts comes just days after Apple officially revealed its second quarter earnings announcing profits from its market leading smartphone have risen 95 per cent over the past three months with more than 18 million of the highly desirable devices sold.

Despite being delayed by more than 10 months, Apple’s white rendition of the iPhone 4 has been confirmed as heading for its official release tomorrow, April 27th despite the next generation iPhone 5 expected to touch down in June.

What features of the iPhone 4 would you like to see improved for the next-generation model? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

White iPhone 4 release date set for tomorrow, April 27th

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 03:26 AM PDT

Ten months late the white iPhone 4 is to land tomorrow

Apple’s long overdue but hardly forgotten white iPhone 4 is to officially launch tomorrow, April 27th, a leaked shot of Best Buy’s inventory system has revealed.

The retailer’s leak prone stock system has outed the widely expected arrival of the lighter hued iPhone handset with the 32GB white iPhone 4 stated as being in stock and available from April 27th.

This latest white iPhone leak is just the latest in a long run of pre-emptive arrivals that have emerged in the recent weeks outing the device as heading for a global release by the end of the month.

Sporting the same specifications as the existing black iPhone 4, a device that originally launched last June, there have been doubts raised over whether the white model would ever land following a number of manufacturing and colouring issues what with the iPhone 5 expected to launch in a matter of months when Apple’s WWDC roles around at the start of June.

Although still unconfirmed by Apple, a source close to the handset’s production has revealed to T3 that the white iPhone 4 will indeed hit UK markets tomorrow ending an embarrassing run for the Cupertino company.

Will the white iPhone 4 still prove popular despite its heavily delayed arrival? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

YouTube Movie Streaming Service Imminent

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Video-on-demand service now seen as a viable option by Hollywood studios.

YouTube is readying the launch of its movie-on-demand service charging viewers to screen the latest blockbusters as soon as they are released on DVD.

Google’s challenger to Apple’s iTunes store has already signed up Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers and Universal to provide content and may start as early as this week or next according to The Wrap.

Paramount, Fox and Disney have so far declined YouTube’s invitation to join the service although independent studios, including Lionsgate and Kino Lorber, have also agreed to join the new platform.

At present, Google is yet to comment on the speculation other than issuing an obligatory no comment and stating, “We've steadily been adding more and more titles since launching movies for rent on YouTube over a year ago, and now have thousands of titles available."

Although a pricing plan is still to be announced for the service, it appears high-grossing studios are now willing to place their faith in video streaming following the launch of Apple’s iTunes rental service in January 2008.

Would you stream a movie off YouTube? Is the video-on-demand service best saved for sneezing pandas? Let us know via Facebook and Twitter.

Nintendo 3DS sales hit 3.6 million mark since launch

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 02:45 AM PDT

3.6 million 3DS sales falls below Nintendo's opening targets

As focus rests on the announcement of an imminent Wii 2 unveiling, Nintendo has revealed the recently released 3DS has shifted 3.6 million units to date, with sales falling well below the company’s expectations.

Released to much fanfare sales of the world’s first glasses-free 3D portable games console were hampered shortly after launch as health concerns quelled interest with early adopters of the 3D gamer reporting cases of eye-strain, nausea, headaches and vomiting following brief periods of using the device.

Ensuring investors that the 3DS got off to a “smooth start” despite falling short of the 4 million sales target bestowed upon it, the Japanese gaming giant attempted to hide plummeting profits that has seen net income drop 66 per cent to 77.6 billion YEN (around £545m) by revealing the eagerly anticipated Wii 2 console will be officially unveiled at E3 on June 7th.

Announced alongside the 3DS console sales, Nintendo revealed that since hitting Japan in February and European and US markets late last month, 9.43 million games have been sold for the fledgling console rounding out to just short of three games per user.

Have you already snapped up the Nintendo 3DS or have it lined up on your gadget wish list? Share your thoughts on the glasses-free 3D gamer with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Jobs: "We don't track anyone"

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 02:42 AM PDT

Boss takes swipe at Google as iPhone tracking story refuses to die.

Steve Jobs has fired back at claims about the iPhone’s ability to track users’ locations, responding to an email about the issue. As ever, Jobs issued a terse reply, but did manage to find space to have a go at Google.

Jobs’ latest missive was in response to a MacRumors reader’s query about location tracking. The reader said, “Could you please explain the necessity of the passive location-tracking tool embedded in my iPhone? It's kind of unnerving knowing that my exact location is being recorded at all times. Maybe you could shed some light on this for me before I switch to a Droid. They don't track me.”

Jobs fired back, “Oh yes they do. We don't track anyone. The info circulating around is false.” The story has gathered pace in recent days as privacy campaigners and iPhone users fret over how much Apple knows about where they’ve been.

While Android does track users, word is this is on a much smaller scale, with data wiped in order to protect privacy. It looks as if this is yet another iPhone controversy that just won’t die.

Apple iMac: new models out 3 May?

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 02:14 AM PDT

New machines set to get Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt connectivity.

The new Apple iMac could be on shelves as soon as Tuesday 3 May. That’s because Apple is stopping the shipping of current models to stores this week, according to an inside source speaking with 9to5Mac.

This has been backed up by anecdotal evidence from users looking to buy an iMac now, only to find shipping has been delayed until after 2 May. With Apple a fan of unleashing new kit on Tuesdays, it’s not too much of a leap to suggest we’ll see the new machines on 3 May.

The new iMac is expected to come with Intel’s new Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt I/O, following in the footsteps of the recently updated MacBook pro range.

Will you be holding out for a new iMac? Or are you happy with the current spec? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 4S pictured

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 01:18 AM PDT

Heftier screen, but no other details on what we can expect from new iPhone.

The iPhone 4S. Make a note of the name, because that’s what tech site MIC Gadget is shown in the picture on this very page. The device is a beefed up version of the iPhone 4, with a marginally bigger screen sitting pretty up front.

The edge-to-edge glass design and bigger panel are in keeping with a string of design drawings which leaked online earlier in the year. There have also been parts leaks suggesting Apple is plotting a larger version of the iPhone.

It’s interesting to note that this isn’t being referred to as the iPhone 5. Could it be that Apple is only plotting an iterative update, following the same upgrade path it took from the iPhone 3G to 3GS?

Sony’s PSN nightmare is continuing this morning, with the online gaming service and the Qroicity streaming package both still down and explanations for the outage in short supply. The Big S has once again posted an official update on its PlayStation blog, but there’s no news on when PSN will up and running again.

Sony’s Patrick Seybold used the official blog to come straight to the point, “I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time,” he said.

“As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we’re working to get them back online quickly. We’ll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience.”

Rumours of lost credit card details and hacks by the Anonymous collective, which last month brought PSN to its knees, remain rife. Either way, this is becoming seriously damaging and embarrassing for the Big S.

Sony S1 and S2 Tablets revealed

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 11:24 PM PDT

Big S the latest tech player to take on the iPad.

Sony has just unveiled its Android 3.0 tablet plans, revealing a pair of slates that it reckons can take on the might of the Apple iPad. The S1 and S2 both come loaded up with Honeycomb, the ace PlayStation Suite for PSOne gaming, eBooks from the Reader store, plus Sony’s Qriocity streaming service for downloading and streaming music and video.

The two devices themselves couldn’t be more different. The 9.4-inch S1 looks like your standard tablet, although as per a string of rumours, it has a slightly raised edge in order to resemble an open magazine. It also has universal remote control smarts, with the chance to share content via DLNA. This will only work on Sony’s Bravia boxes to start with, mind.

The S2, however, is something completely unique. Packing dual 5.5-inch screens, its designed to act as a DS-style games console as much as an easy eBook reader. It’s also crammed with DLNA for sharing media too.

There are set to be both 3G and 4G models when Sony releases the S1 and S2 in the autumn. There’s no doubting that both devices are going to give Apple, plus a string Android stablemates, plenty to think about in the next few months.

Tell us what you think of the Sony S1 and S2 now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Tech Today: Wii 2 official, Apple iMac 2011 refresh

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 08:15 PM PDT

The tech news you missed out on during Bank Holiday Easter Monday.

The Nintendo Wii 2 is finally official and will be unveiled to the world at E3 in June before it is released in 2012. The company confirmed that the successor to the Wii will offer a new approach to home console gaming. Those attending E3 will see a playable version of the new console, but those hoping to put the device on their Christmas list can think again.

Meanwhile the Nintendo 3DS has enjoyed what Nintendo is calling a 'smooth start' after selling 3.6m units across the world so far. The figure falls slightly below the 4m the company had forecast. The company is backing the handheld 3D console to pull profits back up after the company announced a dramatic fall in net income for the financial year ending March 31st.

We don't mean to sound like a broken record here, but the PlayStation Network is STILL down. However now it's getting very, very serious. After initially expecting the service to be offline for a day or two, Sony has now said it is keeping the PSN down indefinitely while it figures out whether a hack that brought the online gaming portal to its knees has compromised the private data of users.

New Apple iMacs could be arriving as soon as next week, according to reports. The desktop computing powerhouse might get a refresh sooner than expected according to 9-to-5 Mac, which says that Apple will stop shipping current iMac's to retailers ahead of an official release on May 3rd. The new iMacs would be likely to boast Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt connectivity. This one's still very much in rumour territory at the moment, though.
