News@8pm: HTC Flyer release date and iPad 3 rumours

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

New HTC devices have been the talk of the tech world following yesterday's product unveiling. Whilst the new flagship smartphone will hit the UK exclusive to Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Three and Orange have now all confirmed they will stock the HTC Sensation from June. Joining the Sensation with an imminent UK launch is the company's first tablet with the HTC Flyer to launch on May 9th.

iPad 3 rumours have kicked off just weeks after the second-generation tablet hit stores. Today's addition saw news that the iPad 3 will not launch with a Retina display, contrary to popular belief. Elsewhere on the Apple tablet front and French developers have found a way to display glasses-free 3D images on the iPad 2 taking the shine somewhat away from the 3DS, a device that hit the UK on the same day as the iPad 2.

Future gaming tech will see the formerly revolutionary motion gaming console, the Nintendo Wii face a price drop. Following this it is expected that Nintendo will officially unveil its Wii follow-up the Nintendo Wii HD. In other unrelated tech news the Motorola Xoom 3G can now be snapped up for just £199, further suggesting the device is struggling with poor sales.

iPad 3 rumours: No Retina display for launch

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 07:30 AM PDT

Next-gen Apple tablet to miss out on iPhone 4-esque Retina display

Apple’s second-generation tablet is barely out of its pristinely white box but iPad 3 rumours are already kicking into overdrive with latest analyst reports suggesting the device will launch without the much desired Retina display.

Following the inclusion of forward and rear mounted cameras, a slimmer form factor and a dual-core processor, many iPad 2 adopters were left disappointed that the second generation device had not plumped for an iPhone 4-esque Retina display as had been widely expected.

Now, however, those holding out for the third generation tablet look to set to be handed the same disappointment as a number of industry analysts report the mooted device will once again not feature the visually impressive screen.

All may not be downcast for the iPad 3’s display qualities though as Digital Trends suggest: “Apple is speculated to be considering using an AMOLED panel or Full HD resolution support for the coming tablet.”

Other rumours to date around the iPad 3 have surrounded the tablet’s predicted release date. Whilst many predict the third-generation of the market dominating tablet device will hit store later this year, most likely September, others have suggested Apple will retain its February product cycle.

What features would you most like to see on any third-generation iPad device? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony Ericsson adds bespoke Android Market to handsets

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 07:18 AM PDT

Timescape and LiveView apps now more easily accessible for Sony Ericsson handset owners.

Sony Ericsson has launched its own applications channel on the Android Market Homepage, showcasing plug-ins for its Timescape UI and LiveView accessory.

The Sony Ericsson channel appears in place of the My Apps link on the Android Market homepage alongside the channels for apps and games. My Apps is now relegated to a link in the Android menu.

Sony Ericsson is the first manufacturer to change the Android Market to suit its own purposes, but it's a good way to show-off the bespoke Timescale apps that may get lost in the shuffle in the regular Market.

Among the apps listed in the Sony Ericsson channel are Foursquare Timescape and LinkedIn Timescape, as well as a camera plug-in for the neat little LiveView wrist accessory.

Sony Ericsson has said this change won't occur on all of its handsets and that the Android Market revamp will be largely dependent on your mobile operator.

HTC Flyer UK release date officially set as May 9th

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 06:32 AM PDT

Flyer tablet to launch within a matter of weeks

HTC has officially confirmed that its first attempt at a tablet device, the HTC Flyer, will hit stores across Europe on May 9th.

Revealed just days after the 7-inch Flyer appeared for pre-order via the Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy with a hefty £599.99 price tag, HTC’s Florient Seiche has announced the tablet device will hit the UK within a matter of weeks.

Sporting a 7-inch form factor and 1.2GHz single core processor, the Flyer’s innards are to be boosted by the inclusion of 32GB of internal storage, full Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities and Google’s Android 2.4 operating system capable of supporting Adobe Flash 10.2 video content. The attempted iPad rival will also land with a 5-megapixel rear mounted camera, 1.3-meg forward-facing snapper and the HTC Scribe Pen stylus.

Confirming the Flyer’s release date at yesterday’s HTC London event the company went on to unveil its new flagship smartphone, a 4-3-inch, 1.2GHz dual-core processor touting device to be known as the HTC Sensation. Featuring a new 3.0 version of HTC’s Sense UI the Sensation will launch next month with an 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p Full-HD video recording.

Will the Flyer be able to challenge the iPad atop the tablet market? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Sensation release coming to Orange, Three and T-Mobile

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 04:10 AM PDT

First dual-core HTC phone to hit major networks in June

Everything Everywhere partners T-Mobile and Orange have revealed they are to follow Three and offer the recently unveiled HTC Sensation in June, one month after the dual-core handset lands in the UK exclusive to Vodafone.

Leaving O2 as the only remaining major UK mobile network to announce its plans for the new HTC flagship device, Orange, Three and T-Mobile have all confirmed they are to stock the handset in June although prices, exact dates of availability and tariff rates are still unknown.

Officially unveiled during a London-based press conference yesterday HTC has revealed the Sensation, formerly known as the HTC Pyramid, will touch down in the UK next month touting an impressive specs haul that includes a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch 540 x 960p SLCD display and an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera that features Full-HD 1080p video recording capabilities and a dual LED flash.

Set to land running Google’s Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread mobile operating system, the Sensation will come featuring a newly revamped 3.0 version of HTC’s hugely popular Sense UI that will enhance the user experience via an array of 3D widgets, a 360-degree menu carousel and innovative lockscreen shortcuts that will allow users to activate their phones directly into desired applications.

HTC’s official teaser video for the newly announced HTC Sensation has now been launched and can be viewed below.

iPad 2 3D model: Glasses-free display demonstrated

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 03:13 AM PDT

iPad 2 joins in on the 3DS action.

Researchers in France have devised technology that delivers a glasses-free 3D display on the iPad 2.

Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay who work for the EHCI research group, are the men behind the Apple tablet innovation, utilizing the iPad 2 camera and head-tracking technology to allow 3D objects to be viewed on the 9.7-inch display.

The great thing about it is that it does not require any additional hardware which could pave the way for other devices to follow in the footsteps of the Nintendo 3DS and the LG Optimus 3D smartphone.

Research on the 3D technology is still in the early stages so it may be some time before we see it on any device.

You can check it out in action on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 in the two videos below.

23-inch Lenovo tablet coming in Q4 2011?

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Are your wrists strong enough for the mega tab?

If you’re battling against Apple’s iPad, you’re going to need a pretty good unique selling point; Android alone isn’t going to do it. Lenovo is all too aware of this and it’s looking to size as the key - its planning to unleash a giant 23-inch tablet.

At 23-inches, the tab wouldn't be baggable. Chatting to TechRadar, Lenovo’s senior Marketing specialist William Cai explained the idea, stating that "It's obviously not for full mobility use, but it could be moved from room to room in the house and used with a full keyboard, or as a television. Or you could lay it on a table top and use it for family games.”

He went on to explain that Lenovo is hoping to “take care of battery life,” and - crucially with a tab of this size – are “working to get the weight down.” He finished by revealing that the enormo-tab is pencilled in for launch “later this year." With Lenovo’s all-in-one desktops being the company’s meat and veg of late, they’ve certainly got the experience necessary to put together a slimline, large-screened machine.

Would such a device be a useful, multi-room machine, or is it a step too far in the tablet war? We’re keen to know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

Nintendo Wii price cut imminent?

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 03:01 AM PDT

New rumour suggests Nintendo readying to cut price of its home console.

The Nintendo Wii is all set to have its price slashed. Word is the console will slip to $150 in the US on 15 May, with a “trusted source” spilling the beans to chaps at Engadget.

Such a cut would not be a huge surprise. Nintendo has seen sales of the hub slide dramatically as the Xbox 360’s low price point has hit home. The dawn of Kinect and PS Move has also seen Ninty’s share drop substantially.

That the cut is apparently due a month ahead of E3 suggests Nintendo may well finally be planning on showing off the Wii 2. It’s now almost five years since the Wii was first released, so a sequel is surely on the cards.

Whether this price cut comes to the UK remains to be seen. But a sub £100 Wii would certainly do swift business on these shores.

Motorola Xoom 3G: Nab one now for £199

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 02:16 AM PDT

Carphone Warehouse looks to push subsidised Honeycomb slate

Think £579 for a 3G Motorola Xoom is a touch pricey? Then Carphone Warehouse might have the answer. The mobile store, which is exclusively stocking the 3G version of the Android tablet, is now selling the Xoom for £199 on contract.

The deal offers unlimited data on Carphone’s own Talk Mobile service and will cost you £25 a month over two years, as well as the up-front cost. Over the 24 month period the whole deal clocks in at £799.

However, it’s worth remembering that even if you do fork over £579 for a SIM-free model, you’ll still need to pay for a data deal. Ultimately, this doesn’t look like a bad deal if you fancy an Android slate, but haven’t got the requisite readies to hand.

Is this enough to tempt you into buying a Motorola Xoom? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

LA Noire: 5 hours of cut scenes

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 01:13 AM PDT

Rockstar says game will take around 30 hours to complete.

LA Noire, Rockstar’s forthcoming 1940s film noir title, will have a massive five hours of cut scenes. That’s according to a filing by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which has just slapped the game with an 18 rating.

The cut scenes come in at exactly five hours and twelve minutes, with another three hours and twenty-five minutes of, “…supplementary game footage.” Looks like you’ll have plenty of time to make a brew or have a snooze between missions then.

LA Noire is due to hit shelves on 20 May and is likely to follow the success of Rockstar’s recent titles. What we all really want to know though is when the company plans on outing GTA 5.

New look MeeGo spied on Intel tablet

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 11:46 PM PDT

Slick looking update caught on video.

MeeGo has been spruced up and given a new look as the joint Nokia and Intel OS lives on, in spite of Nokia’s plans to go all-in with Microsoft and Windows Phone 7. An updated version of the operating system has been seen working on a new reference tablet out in China.

The UI has been given some serious tweaks, losing its vertical column design with widgets that instead mimic the likes of iOS and Android Honeycomb more closely. That said, there are plenty of unique features, with rollerdex-style photos and scrollable album covers. You can check out the new look in the video below.

This tablet seen running MeeGo is currently a generic device which is likely to be bought by a major manufacturer. It uses Intel’s new Atom Z670 chip, with 1GB of RAM, dual cameras, docking port and microSD expansion.

Adobe Flash: new critical flaw found

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 11:28 PM PDT

Dodgy Word docs targeting Windows, but Android devices also susceptible.

Adobe has revealed another “critical vulnerability” in the latest version of its Flash Player, with Mac, Windows, Android and Linux users all targeted. The attack is mainly targeted at Windows users though, and is found in moody Word docs sent as email attachments.

Adobe says the flaw can cause PCs to crash, with attackers potentially able to take control of affected machines. This comes just a month after Flash was breached in a similar attack, then using Excel rather than Word files.

Worryingly, Adobe only says that it’s, “…in the process,” of issuing an update to Flash, so there’s no news on just when an update to sort this new problem will be available. This will doubtless have Steve Jobs saying, “…told you so.”

Have you been affected by Adobe’s latest security niggle? Does this prove that Apple is right to leave Flash off of the iPhone and iPad? Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Tech Today: Internet Explorer 10 demo, MeeGo on tablets

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 06:07 PM PDT

It's the biggest tech news that broke after you logged-off.

Internet Explorer 9 has only just left the Microsoft labs, but the company is already tempting us with a newer version of the classic browser after showing off an early version of Internet Explorer 10 at MIX 2011. IE 10, which will boast full HTML5 support, is only three weeks into development, but Microsoft says it wants to start engaging with developers early on.

Intel's MeeGo operating system looked to be dead and buried when Nokia jumped ship to make Windows Phone 7 devices so Intel has looked east to get support for the Linux-like mobile OS. MeeGo has appeared on a prototype tablet at Intel's developers forum in Beijing with the company looking for support from a manufacturer to build the device.

BT and Virgin Media's quest to turn the UK into a super-fast broadband paradise will reach a landmark this month, when the 250,000th line boasting 25Mbps and upwards is installed. However, keep the party poppers unpopped because although there have been 75,000 new lines since the turn of the year, 250k only represents 1 per cent of the UK market.

Google Street View has caused plenty of controversy but that hasn't scared off the competition. Microsoft Streetside is already available in 56 US cities and will start mapping in London and across Europe in the next month. Microsoft has admitted that it is not going to be quite as comprehensive as Street View, but just the most valuable urban areas.
