Tech Today: Apple confirms White iPhone 4, outs iOS 4.3.2

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 02:30 PM PDT

The tech news that broke after you logged-off.

The infamous White iPhone 4 has finally been officially confirmed by Apple for a release this spring according to the Wall Street Journal. The White iPhone 4 has been delayed for ten months due to manufacturing issues, but reports this week have claimed that its arrival is imminent. Now the WSJ says Apple has confirmed the release, but didn't commit beyond the "spring" launch. Well it's mid-April now, it must be soon right? RIGHT?

Apple's latest software update for its iOS devices has arrived promising fixes for a few minor ailments. Apple iOS 4.3.2 promises a fix for the FaceTime freezing issue and to take care of the connectivity issues for iPad 2 3G owners who've struggled to connect to local networks.

Google's latest earnings call has raised a few eyebrows Stateside after failing to meet Wall Street expectations for the first time in a while. Revenue was up to $6.6bn for the quarter, rising from $5bn over the same period last year, but high costs saw earnings per share come in at $8.08, which missed the forecast profits of $8.10. We're not sure they'll be pressing the panic button just yet.

Android continues to power-on for Google however, with news that 3 billion Android apps have now been installed on the Android devices. Downloads are up 50 per cent from Q4 last year. 350,000 Android devices are now being activated every day. Apple remains way in front at about 10 billion downloads, but Google is hot on its tail and catching-up.

BlackBerry Playbook reviews are starting to come in and its a mixed bag for RIM. Engadget's review says that the PlayBook will appeal to BlackBerry fans, but might struggle to win over those who have a preference for iOS and Android operating systems. RIM's answer to the iPad still has somewhat of an unfinished flavour to the review, but we'll be reserving judgement until PlayBook review samples arrive in Blighty.

Taptu iPad app launches as an innovative new news source

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Taptu offers users with bespoke news feeds based on their requirements

Following launches for the iPhone and Android smartphones social media and mobile technology company Taptu has officially unveiled the Taptu iPad app, an innovative new service allowing users to discover news content.

Self proclaimed as the “pre-eminent next generation news service,” Taptu iPad will allow users to intricately craft news streams bespokely tailored to their precise wants and needs from a global catalogue of RSS feeds and a search algorithm designed to allow users to discover content and sources relevant to their requirements.

With a version of the Taptu service scheduled to launch for Android Gingerbread touting tablets such as the Motorola Xoom by the end of the month, the iPad edition, which is available to download from the iTunes App Store free of charge now, marks the company’s first foray into the rapidly growing tablet market.

“Thanks to the millions of downloads of our first generation apps on iPhone and Android, we listened to our customers and further analyzed how they want to consume their news, manage their information and social networks and mix their favorite content sources. We’ve focused on delivering the most powerful way for customers to curate, follow and share content– from their widest interests to their most niche passions – all in one convenient free app,” proclaimed Mitch Lazar, CEO of Taptu.

Speaking directly with T3 Taptu spokesman Konstantinos Papamiltiadis said of rival services such as Flipboard that already do similar things to the Taptu app: “The problem they solve is the packaging of content, not the discovery of content.”

Of the new, innovative service he added: “We target one stream for every topic a user might want to search. Taptu provides plurality of content, depth of content and context. It makes the RSS feed a sexy push to websites and allows users to discover information.”

What is your favourite news-based application, has the launch of Taptu changed this decision? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Spotify reduce free service to just 10 hours per month

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Spotify push users to premium services as free streaming cap is halved

Spotify has made the inevitable, albeit controversial, move and halved the amount of free music users can access on a monthly basis, pushing customers of the streaming service to its pay-monthly options.

Set to kick into action from May 1st, the revamped Spotify service will limit free streaming time to just 10 hours per month, half of the previous cap, with individual track streams to be limited to just five plays per month.

Despite Spotify head Ken Parks ensuring users that the cut is being made only in order to keep part of the streaming services as a free-to-use entity, those who regularly use the free Spotify service, and are subjected to the frequent advertisements, will no doubt be put out by the new cap.

On the reduced free-stream cap Parks said: "Our chief priority is to keep the free service, which is what has made Spotify so popular and successful." He added: "We're a company whose ambition is to offer all the world's music to everyone, which means growing the business and our user base to many times its current size. Everything we do is designed to ensure our users continue to have access to an amazing free experience."

Adding to Parks’ comments and attempting to push users away from the free service and into the monthly-subscriptions packages Daniel Ek wrote on the company’s official blog: "For anyone who thinks they might reach these limits, we hope you'll consider checking out our Unlimited and Premium services."

Update: Speaking with T3 a Spotify spokesperson has just revealed that new users to the service, will the existing 20 free hour offering for a limited period. They said: "As well as the caps that are coming in, new users will get the existing free service for six months." This revelation provides good news for those who have signed up within recent months.

Will the new Spotify free music cap push you to subscribe or leave you disgruntled about a loss of 10 hours of free tunes? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nokia pledge to back Symbian OS until 2014

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 05:19 AM PDT

Symbian to co-exist with Phone 7 handsets

Nokia has officially confirmed that it is to continue to support its Symbian mobile operating system until at least 2014 despite pledging to focus its efforts on Windows Phone 7 devices.

With commitments to produce Symbian powered handsets throughout the remainder of 2011 and well into 2012, Nokia’s Australian Managing Director, Chris Carr has revealed the Finnish phone manufacturer will continue to support handsets sorting the flailing service for two years after they hit the market.

Despite penning a deal with Microsoft back in February confirming Nokia would focus on producing new Windows Phone 7 devices with the first handsets from this joint venture expected to hit early next year Carr was keen to stress the two operating systems would, for some time at least, run alongside each other.

Speaking down under the Nokia Director said: There's still a lot of ongoing development with Symbian, the two will co-exist. We've invested a lot of money in Symbian, it's not unusual in the industry to have multiple OS strategies."

Despite having yet to forge a firm standing in the ever growing smartphone market, Nokia this week released two new Symbian smartphones in the form of the X7 and E6 which are to feature and improved version of the OS that adds a faster browser and split-screen typing.

Will Symbian ever forge a market against the likes Android and Windows Phone 7 or gradually grind to a 2014 halt? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Razer Switchblade gaming concept to launch in China

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 03:24 AM PDT

3DS and NGP look out; the Razer is coming for you...

The Razer Switchblade portable gaming PC concept named in this year's T3 Hot 100, is set to launch in China.

Unveiled at CES in January, the US based company confirmed at an Intel Developer Forum in Beijing that the dual 7-inch screen laptop is set to take on the Nintendo 3DS and the Sony NGP for the portable gaming crown.

Chinese internet company Tencent will be working in collaboration with Razer to develop games for the platform of which four titles will be pre-installed on the device.

Commenting on the decision to enter the Chinese market first, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan said, "We think we have a phenomenal opportunity in China," adding, "I think that our focus is on China, and then we'll explore the rest of the world."

Specs-wise we know so far that Razer has been working with Intel, so we can probably expect some Atom processor technology packed inside. Strongly focused on PC-style gaming, the lower screen incorporates changing keys, which take on different functions depending on what game you’re playing.

Razer have set no release date as yet, but we can expect further announcements later this year. With the 3DS already out and the possible arrival of the Sony NGP (PSP2) before the end of the year, portable gaming fans look like they have plenty to look forward to in 2011.

You can check out the video of the Razer Switchblade concept in action below.

BlackBerry Touch 9860 caught on video

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 03:08 AM PDT

Slick UI and smart design showcased.

The BlackBerry Touch 9680 has already posed for a string of spy shots. But now it’s made the step up to video, starring in its own YouTube clip. The Storm successor is already being touted as the slickest BlackBerry ever and it’s not hard to see why.

The user experience looks spot on, with great icons and a snappy new interface that suggests BlackBerry really has upped its touchscreen game. The design is sharp, with plenty of classic BlackBerry flourishes.

Under the hood, rumours suggest we’ll be seeing a 1.2GHz processor, NFC smarts, 3D graphics, with a 480x800 screen. The phone is expected to be officially revealed at the BlackBerry World bash in May, alongside a slew of other new devices.

Windows Phone 7 Mango software update detailed

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 02:56 AM PDT

But will it be too late to make a difference?

At the company’s annual developer show, Microsoft has finally showed off a detailed demo of the Mango software update, which will be coming to Windows Phone 7 later this year. The update will follow the recent NoDo update and bring a slew of new features to the burgeoning platform.

Chief among Mango’s new features is Multi-tasking, which will allow for instant swapping between apps, as well as native support for music players from both the browser and apps – finally allowing for apps such as Spotify to continue playing tracks in the background.

Microsoft has also tweaked the way WP7 handsets deal with apps, making scrolling a lot smoother and cutting down on the amount of memory being used by around a third for each. There will also be improved searching throughout the phone – most notable in the Marketplace, where search results will be returned in categorised lists. The app list screen to the right of the main tile page will also be altered to allow users to search for apps, as opposed to aimlessly scrolling through an endless list.

That’s the major differences to the software covered, but it’s not all the news; Microsoft also showcased a WP7 version of Angry Birds, revealing that the Ornithological treat will be arriving on the platform on May 20th.

Is Mango the update you’ve been waiting for, or is it still too far away from release to get excited about? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

HTC Desire Android 2.3 update: Three update now mid May

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 02:10 AM PDT

Three had promised to bring roll out Desire update by end of April or beginning of May.

Three has said that it will be rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the original HTCDesire in mid-May, just weeks after claiming on Twitter that the software bump would arrive in either late April or early May.

The news comes from comments on Three’s own website relating to the slick new HTC Sensation. When one user asked when the original Desire would be getting Gingerbread, a moderator replied, “The HTC Desire will be getting the 2.3 update in the middle of May. We will keep you updated.”

This slight delay shouldn’t cause too much concern for now, but after last year’s lengthy waits for Android FroYo to appear on the same device across a number of networks, some users are understandably concerned.

Have you got an original Desire? Worried you’ll be left waiting for the move to Gingerbread? Tell us all about it on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play: O2 says phone "nearly ready"

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 01:12 AM PDT

Announcement comes after O2 delayed release of 'PlayStation Phone' due to buggy software.

O2 says it’s “nearly ready” to release the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, having delayed the phone’s release due to buggy software. Other networks also held the so-called PlayStation Phone back, but this was pinned on shipping problems rather than software faults.

In an official blog post, O2 said it had been testing updated software on the Xperia Play and that it was now satisfied that the phone was almost ready for release. “I’m happy to report [the software] has fixed a lot of the bugs that would have stopped our customers having a great experience when they use the Play,” said the head of O2’s testing team Stuart Hibberd.

However, the mobile network has yet to give the final nod to the phone. Prices and a specific release date are expected to be announced, “…very soon,” with another update from Hibberd expected, “…shortly.”

Have you already bought an Xperia Play? Is the software working out ok for you? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Motorola rugged Android tablet incoming

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 11:47 PM PDT

Features suggest this is a tablet worth waiting for.

Motorola is hard at work on a new rugged Android tablet, aimed squarely at business types. The new slate, which is yet to be named, promises to be the first enterprise-focused Android tab when it hits shelves.

The rugged tablet is currently in beta testing according to an anonymous insider at Moto. Like Moto’s Defy, it promises to be dust and water resistant, capable of working in extreme temperatures and will even kick on after a four foot drop.

Under the hood, you’ll find 1GB of RAM, a 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage, Bluetooth and n standard Wi-Fi with a 7-inch, 1024x600 screen up top. Android Gingerbread is the OS of choice, but that could change seeing as the tablet is currently only in beta testing.

Whether this hardcore tablet will convince clumsy workers to ditch their PC laptops remains to be seen. But it’s great to see Moto starting to look beyond the Xoom already.

White iPhone 4: late April release promised

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 11:27 PM PDT

Bloomberg sources claim it's a goer, but will Apple really release the white iPhone 4?

The White iPhone 4. It’s the Apple story that just won’t die and now a new report claims that the blower, pegged for release last summer and again this spring, will definitely be on shelves by the end of April.

“Three people with knowledge of the plans,” have told Bloomberg that the white iPhone 4’s release is imminent. One said there’ll be two different versions, one for US network Verizon, the other for AT&T.

Word is the delay is due to the white paint peeling away from the phone under heat. That issue has now been fixed, with these latest release rumours coming just weeks after Apple’s Phil Schiller took to Twitter to announce the white iPhone 4 would be coming in spring.

Is it too late for the white iPhone 4? Or will you be stumping up for one when it goes on sale? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
