iPad app news: NBA Jam HD arrives on iPad

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 07:16 AM PDT

Boomshakalaka!

Dunk-happy console basketball game NBA Jam has landed on the iPad to the delight of 16-bit fans around the world.

The famous 2-on-2 basketball sim, which shot to fame with its outrageous slam dunks and relentless arcade-style play on consoles like the SNES and Megadrive, back in the early 90s, is available to download now at a cost £5.99 on the iPad.

With all-new updated NBA teams (shame really, we kind of enjoyed playing as Jordan and Pippen with The Bulls back in the day), and a touchscreen-based control system the fun of the original appears to have been masterfully recreated.

Having had a brief play on the game, the touchscreen doesn't quite have the same fluidity to it as the old control pad method, but it might just be a case of spending a little time getting used to it.

There's still the same monumental array of crazy dunks from centre court and no halts in gameplay for free throws or fouls or any of that nonsense. It even boasts the original theme music of the original Megadrive game.

NBA Jam has also been available for the iPhone and iPod touch for a few months, but its great to see EA Sports give the old Midway sim a 2011 sheen.

Weird News: Giant Pacman, Tiny TVs, minimal Star Wars

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 06:37 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

Samsung gets into gaming?
…Probably not, but that hasn’t stopped one plucky designer from spilling his conceptual guts out on this rather NGP-looking machine. According to the designer, the Samsung HD3 would run Android, sport the Galaxy UI and blow anything Sony can do out of the water. Sound too weird? Well, remember that people laughed at both Sony and Microsoft when they got into gaming.

Dollhouse TV
No, we’re not talking about the cancelled Joss Whedon show. This here, is the world’s smallest working TV, fit for either Barbie or Action man’s dream condo/nuclear base. The detail is undeniably impressive, but don’t be fooled; this TV isn’t actually a TV; It doesn’t pick up a Freeview signal. Rather it’ll play anything you load onto its 2GB flash memory

Empire Strikes Back to basics
Some people’s undying Star Wars love is scary. Some people are so enamoured with the films that they’re able to overlook the three recent abominations (films so bad that Ewan McGreggor refuses to talk about them) and plans to sour everything with 3D. This fan, for instance, has spent a presumably large chunk of his free time turning the first two films form the original trilogy into basic infographics. In fairness, they are amazing.

Justin Bieber gets down on Friday
It was always going to take something special to topple Bieber’s Youtube reign; the teenpop money factory has a Youtube Channel garnering over 100 million views. But then along came Rebecca Black, who enjoys kicking in both the front and back seats of cars, eating cereal and, indeed, getting down on Friday…

The White House lives in the 80s
According to Barrack Obama, the most powerful man in the known universe, the computers and tech in the White House aren’t up to muster. Speaking recently, the US Prez claimed that the government’s computers are “30 years behind.” Probably not the best thing you want to reveal to enemies. If they’ve got iPads your in a world of trouble.

.XXX domain names go live
The day you’ve been waiting for has dawned. Registered domains have gone live for adult sites baring the .XXX suffix. What this means is that .XXX will become the web’s red light district, which in the process should leave .COMsville a cleaner, more family friendly place.

Put. The controller. Down
You know the problem: you want to rob your local convenience store, but you don’t have a scary enough weapon to do so in a threatening enough manner. The solution? Whip out your Dual-shock PS3 controller. If the chap behind the till’s old enough he may just think it’s some kind of space-aged doomsday device. …Especially when it rumbles. Someone’s been playing too much Heavy Rain.

Wakka-wakka-woah
Our treat for you for the day, this. It’s built to show off the power of IE9, but if you can ignore the promotional bit then there’s an aeon of PacMan to play. The level is enormous; a veritable labyrinthine landscape of nought but ghosts, corridors and yellow food. Enjoy.

LG Optimus 3D only in June?

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 01:22 AM PDT

The wait is possibly longer than we thought for the glassless 3D blower

The LG Optimus 3D might be landing quite a bit later than we thought, according to online retailer Clove.

Initially thought to release on April 25 2011, Clove is showing a release date of June 6 2011 for the LG Optimus 3D.

Clove is also listing the lowest price for the 3D handset at £454.80, which is the SIM-free price. Other retailers are asking for more, with Expansys at £524.99 and Play.com at £515.

These websites are also currently showing the release date to be April 25.

LG has not yet officially announced the UK release date for the LG Optimus 3D, so we may or may not see the device next week.

Amazon outage brings down Quora, Reddit and more

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 12:38 AM PDT

The clouds are raining on the parade

An outage in Amazon's cloud service on Thursday brought down other websites like Quora, Foursquare, Hootsuite and Reddit.

The outage took place at 1:41am PT in Amazon Web Service's northern Virginia location and resulted in delays and errors in server connections over certain networks.

Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service offers cloud computing for web companies that need a lot of storage but with low costs. It allows its users to pay-as-they-go and increase or decrease their cloud storage according to their needs.

"We can confirm connectivity errors impacting EC2 instances and increased latencies impacting [Elastic Block Storage] volumes in multiple availability zones in the US-EAST-1 region," Amazon said.

Quora, the question-and-answer service, let its users know there was a problem with the servers at the time. "We'll be back shortly, we hope. Sorry, it sucks for us too. We'd point fingers, but we wouldn't be where we are today without EC2,” it said.

Reddit also kept its customers in the loop, and said, "reddit is in "emergency read-only mode" right now because Amazon is experiencing a degradation. they are working on it but we are still waiting for them to get to our volumes. there is no ETA at this time, but we are trying to work some magic and will very slowly be bringing the site back up. please stand by."

The latest update according to Amazon said they are working to fix the problem. "It's taking us longer than we anticipated. When we have an updated ETA or meaningful new update, we will make sure to post it here. But, we can assure you that the team is working this hard and will do so as long as it takes to get this resolved."

Super Mario landing on Nintendo 3DS

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 11:34 PM PDT

It's raining Mario

A lot of Mario news has fallen our way with the reveal that Super Mario 3DS will be out this year if Miyamoto has anything to do about it, and about the Mario and Sonic game specially created for the 2012 London Olympics.

The creator of plumber Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, said that the Super Mario 3DS game is 'completely original and coming this year', according to Edge.

He said, "It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64."

He also said playing the game at E3 will give gamers a better idea of what the game is all about. Miyamoto also spoke about how using 3D was affecting the game in a positive way.

When Super Mario 3DS was announced, not much was revealed so gamers will be hoping to catch a glimpse of the game at E3 this year in June.

In another bit of Mario news, SEGA and Nintendo announced Mario and Sonic will team up on the Wii and on the Nintendo 3DS for the first time for the official Olympic-themed video game: Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Along with classic Olympic games such as athletics, aquatics and table tennis, football and equestrian will also be seen on the Wii version.

The game will also feature over 50 original Olympic themed events in bother single and multiplayer modes.

"Mario and Sonic have had a phenomenally successful partnership and we are extremely proud to be able to recreate this once again with Nintendo and ISM for the London 2012 Olympic Games,” said Naoya Tsurumi, Chairman for SEGA of America and SEGA Europe.

A launch date for the game will be announced later in the year.
