Privacy flaw in Skype Android app exposed

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:51 AM PDT

Skype "working to protect you" from vulnerability.

Skype has acknowledged a dangerous flaw in its Android app which leaves the private data of its users open to be exploided by malicious apps.

While the app itself hasn't been giving the data up to snoopers, the design of the app leaves a database file unencrypted, leaving things like your username and password, email address, address and phone number exposed.

If a user has a malicious app installed on their Android phone then those details can be pilfered and sent back to the shady individual in question.

In a brief blog post, Skype has said it is "working to protect you from this vulnerability."

The flaw was discovered by the super sleuths at AndroidPolice.com who posted the following information:

"The most interesting file one can gain access to is main.db. The accounts table in this database holds information such as account balance, full name, date of birth, city/state/country, home phone, office phone, cell phone, email addresses, your webpage, your bio, and more.

"The Contacts table holds similar information, but on friends, family and anyone else in your contact list (that is, more than Skype exposes on other users publicly). Moving further along, looking into the Chats table, we can see your instant messages – and that's just the tip of it. Scary.

"This means that a rogue developer could modify an existing application…, distribute that application on the Market, and just watch as all that private user information pours in. While the exploit can't steal your credit card info, the data it's harvesting is still clearly very private (chat logs linked back to your real name, address, and phone number)."

Portal 2 mystery timer hints towards early game arrival

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:37 AM PDT

Portal 2 tipped for early arrival as mystery timer appears

A mystery timer has appeared on the Aperture Science website ahead of the release of Portal 2, seemingly counting down to a point when fans of the original gaming release will be able to choose the arrival time of its sequel.

Having yesterday hit the website of Aperture Science, the in-game laboratories company in which you originally awake, the mystery timer has, as we write this, just 1 hour 23 minutes to run. What will happen when this timer hits zero is currently unknown but a teasing piece of text accompanying the countdown suggests it could be the release date.

Currently pegged for an April 19th release the Portal 2 teasing text declares: “The time is near, humans. But it is not here yet. Tomorrow you will be given the final test. Then it will be entirely in your hands when I am freed.”

Adding fresh weapons, new characters and an online co-op mode, Portal 2 will feature Ricky Gervais’s wingman Stephen Merchant who is to voice the robotic tones of your in-game buddy Wheatley.

What will happen when the countdown clock hits zero? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Weird News: Transforming houses, wooden Androids

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:57 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

China bans time travel
Putting together the final touches on your time bending device? You’d best down tools if you’re anywhere near China. The People’s Republic has decided to put a ban on all grandfather paradox-inducing antics for the foreseeable future. Well… at least film and TV portrayals of it, anyway. Dr Who’s just lost itself a demographic.

The iPad paintbrush
The iPad has proved a popular tool for artists, as its touchscreen smoothness and ability to undo whatever happened when you just sneezed make it easier than doing actual real life art. Now budding iArtists have an extra tool at their disposal, so long as they don’t question how it works. Questioning how it works stops the magic.

Mobile phone games break a record

What do you get when 316 people stand about in the same room all playing games on mobile phones? A world record. Not one that you should be particularly proud of, though. It’s not one you’d tell your grandkids about, is it? Especially if it’s an event hosted by Max and O.B from Hollyoaks.

Spotify upsets millions
In a time before the internet, the way people would acquire music involved shops, physical interaction and the exchange of money. Somewhere along the line the scrolls explaining how this practice worked were lost, and a generation was born who knew nothing of paying for music. Then one day, the god-given stream of gratis music that they were all used to was lessened and they all moaned about it like the bubonic plague had come back.

Rise of the trailer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes
The trailer for this James Franco prequel has just hit the web. It’s not weird but it does look pretty cool. The special effects crew behind Avatar have been hard at work on this for a few years now, presumably having figured out how to dial down the blue.

Transformer house
Out of all the Transformers, we always felt like Soundwave had been dealt a duff hand. Whereas all his mates could swivel their bits into sports cars and jet fighters, he had to watch them ride off into the distance as he sat motionless playing cassettes. Still, it could have been worse. He could have been a house.

Lenovo’s enormo-tab
We should clear this up first: Later the same day, Lenovo said that it WON’T be making a 23-inch humunga-tablet. But earlier it did. It’s all very confusing, but suffice to say we had a good laugh about the idea. Jokes about weak wrists were made. It was great; you should have been there.

And finally…

Awesome Android ad is awesome
Adverts are often stale, dull and unimaginative. This one isn’t. Say goodbye to the next three minutes.

GTA 5 release date set as January 15th 2012

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:53 AM PDT

Grand Theft Auto 5 to touch down early next year

The next instalment of the hugely popular Gran Theft Auto gaming franchise, the heavily mooted GT5, is to officially launch on January 15th 2012, new reports suggest.

Currently listed for release on the early 2012 date by online retailer GameStop Germany, a January 15th arrival would likely see the currently unannounced gaming title officially unveiled by developer Rockstar at this June’s E3 gaming convention in LA.

Far from the first we have heard about an upcoming GTA 5 release, last year a series of job advertisements were posted by Rockstar with titles hinting towards involvement with the eagerly awaited follow-up to Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV.

Adding weight to the GameStop listing, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter last year proclaimed: "We fully expect the next instalment of Grand Theft Auto to be released by Q4:12 at the latest, as the company's contracts with the three employees most instrumental in the game's development (Les Benzies, Sam and Dan Houser) expire in January 2012."

Which is your favourite addition to the GTA franchise to date and where would you like to see GTA V set? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

White iPhone 4 release date confirmed by Apple claim WSJ

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 04:54 AM PDT

Lighter-hued iPhone device coming by the end of the month

The Wall Street Journal is claiming Apple has officially confirmed it is to finally release the white iPhone 4 later this month, some ten month after it was supposed to land.

Following a rollercoaster ride of issues, delays and mystery appearances, the lighter-hued Apple handset is reportedly to hit global markets within a matter of days as the WSJ declared: “Apple said Thursday the white iPhone was would be released in the spring, reiterating a projection the company made in October.”

The WSJ claims, which fail to be accompanied by any official Apple quote or statement, follow reports yesterday that sources close to the matter had ‘promised’ the elusive white device would fulfil Apple’s previous claims of a spring release and land by the end of the month.

With everything from the battery discolouring the white shell to the white paint job causing the camera’s flash to overpower images being blamed for the handset’s delays, the lighter-toned device was piped to release by a white model iPad 2 that launched alongside its traditional black counterpart last month sporting a new slimmer, lighter form factor, dual cameras and a dual-core processor.

Will the white iPhone 4 still have a market if landing later this month or has it long passed its window of opportunity? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google's Android OS tots up three billionth app download

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 03:20 AM PDT

Android app downloads up 50 per cent on previous quarter

Google’s Android mobile operating system is going from strength to strength with the global tech giant officially announcing the Android platform has clocked up more than three billion app downloads to date.

Whilst this is still a hefty margin behind Apple’s iOS operating system which has reported in excess of 10 billion application downloads thus far, the figures, revealed via the company’s quarterly earnings report, mark a 50 per cent download increase from Q4.

Having taken 20 months from launch to hit the one billion app download milestone, Google’s mobile OS has since catapulted to mainstream popularity toting up its two billionth download just five months later ahead of yesterday’s three billion announcement.

These weighty figures have been obtained in such a short period of time thanks to the rapid rise in popularity of the Android operating system. Keen to reiterate just how successful the OS has become, communicating via the company’s quarterly earnings report, Google’s Senior VP of Commerce and Local declare that more than 350,000 Android devices are being activated each and every day.

Are you an Android adopter? Let us know what you think of the Google mobile OS and which of the many app downloads has proven most popular on your handset via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PS3 hits 50 million

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 03:14 AM PDT

Move and 3D games helping Sony console do the business.

Sony has confirmed it’s now sold 50 million PS3s worldwide since launch. The impressive number comes almost five years after the console first went on sale here in November 2006. The numbers were calculated at the end of March.

In addition to overall console sales soaring, Sony has also said it’s shifted an impressive eight million PS Move controllers, as it looks to assert its position against Microsoft’s Kinect. The Big M’s motion sensor had sold 10 million by the start of last month.

3D games are also surging on the PlayStation, with 89 titles now available. It seems strategy of loading the PS3 up with killer tech at launch and watching it sell massively for years is working.

HTC Sense 3.0: HTC working to bring it to older devices

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 03:06 AM PDT

But for those who can't wait, an HTC Sense 3.0 ROM is available to download

There’s been a bit of a furore this week over HTC Sense UI. The latest version of the Android user interface – Sense 3.0 - was unveiled for the new HTC Sensation smartphone earlier this week, but HTC caused a bit of an upset by mentioning that it won’t work on older devices, such as the HTC Desire and the new HTC Incredible S.

Now HTC has explained things on its official Facebook page. The posting said: “Clarification: There are aspects of the latest HTC Sense that won’t work on some of our previous devices. We are working to incorporate other aspects that will. Stay tuned.”

Does that explain things? No? We’re a bit confused, too. It remains unclear as to which handsets will eventually benefit from the jump to Sense 3.0, but there are alternatives. One feature, for instance, is the ability to add apps to the lock screen, which can be achieved with the WidgetLocker app.

Anyone who simply can’t wait for further news can download a recently leaked ROM of the Sense 3.0 UI, which be found here. It’s an Asian dump of the interface, so it’s not exactly polished, but it’s available, nonetheless. Don’t say we never do anything for you.

Still can’t make sense of HTC’s Sense? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Nintendo DS outsells 3DS in US

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 12:22 AM PDT

Old-school versions of handheld win out.

The Nintendo 3DS shifted over 60,000 units less than its DS stablemate during its first month on sale in the US. The three-dimensional handheld sold just under 400,000 in the States, while the DSi and DSi XL managed 460,000 on the back of the release of the latest Pokemon title.

The latest official stats come after Nintendo revealed it had sold 303,000 3DSs in Europe, including 113,000 in the UK. The US numbers are significantly lower than analysts had predicted, but Nintendo America boss Reggie Fils-Aime remained bullish.

"We are very satisfied with this start and we look forward to the momentum that we will build on Nintendo 3DS with the launch of the E-Shop, the launch of the 3D trailers for Hollywood movies and the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in mid-June,” he said.

By contrast, the original DS sold around 100,000 units more in its first month on sale in November 2004. However, the 3DS costs around $100 more. Have you bought a 3DS yet? Are do you remain unconvinced? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

BlackBerry PlayBook email "very, very soon"

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 11:53 PM PDT

New PlayBook owners having to access email via BlackBerry or online.

The BlackBerry PlayBook will be getting its own email client, “…very, very soon,” according to RIM’s Co-CEO Jim Balsillie. The news comes after the PlayBook received a string of mediocre reviews, with its lack of a dedicated email app highlighted by many as a flaw.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

BlackBerry PlayBook video

Source: T3 Tech Videos
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking to Bloomberg, Balsillie said that new users should hold fire and that they won’t have to wait long for a string of new features. “We have BlackBerry World, our user conference, in a couple weeks. Stay tuned for all capabilities we have coming out on this stuff,” he said.

Balsillie also took time to take a swipe at the iPad, saying, “[The PlayBook] is superior. It’s far more portable, it’s lighter in your hands, you can hold it for longer.” He was also confident of the PlayBook’s success, adding, “I like our chances for a lot of share.”

While that remains to be seen, the fact you can only access email from a BlackBerry via the on-board BlackBerry Bridge software or a webmail client at launch means the PlayBook is already playing catchup.

Are you planning on getting a BlackBerry PlayBook? Or does the lack of features out of the box mean you’ll be leaving well alone? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nokia W7 and W8: first Nokia Windows Phone 7 handsets named

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 11:33 PM PDT

First two Nokia WP7 handsets will pave way for dozen new phones in 2012.

Nokia spent the early part of this week plying its new Symbian wares. But now attention has turned to its forthcoming Windows Phone 7 handsets, with Russian mobile fanatic Eldar Murtazin getting the skinny on two new devices packing Microsoft’s ace OS.

Dubbed the Nokia W7 and W8, the pair of phones are based around the newly announced Nokia X7 and the Nokia N8 respectively. Of course, while the hardware might be similar, the software will be completely different, with WP7 working overtime under the hood.

Murtazin said that all Nokia WP7 phones will be using Qualcomm chips. The W7, which packs an 8 megapixel camera, will be the first to hit shelves and will be quickly followed by the W8 and a dozen phones rocking Microsoft’s mobile operating system in 2012.

Nokia has suggested recently that its first WP7 phones wouldn’t be out until next year. But this level of detail means we could be looking at a release on the right side of Christmas 2011. Here’s hoping, as these are Nokia phones well worth shouting about.
