Tech Today: Apple sues Samsung, Twitter to buy TweetDeck Posted: 18 Apr 2011 04:45 PM PDT
The tech news that broke after you logged-off Apple has sued Samsung claiming that the technology and user interface on the Galaxy Tab, Galaxy S, and Nexus S are copied from the Apple iPad and Apple iPhone."Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple's technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products," the lawsuit said. Interesting.
Is the Nintendo Wii 2 too late? That's the view of one industry analyst who reckons Nintendo missed the boat by allowing PlayStation Move and Microsoft Kinect to sneak in before launching the Wii 2 console. Michael Patcher of Wedbush Securities reckons that the perfect time for Nintendo to launch a Wii follow-up would have been back in 2009. It is widely expected that Ninty will use the E3 gaming expo this summer to unveil its new super console.

Zumba Fitness spends second week atop UK games chart Posted: 18 Apr 2011 08:14 AM PDT
Wii dancing giant retains UK gaming crown Latin dancing fanatics have endeavoured to keep Zumba Fitness at number one in the UK games chart for the second week running.
With no big new releases to challenge it, sales for the intense dance and fitness title suffered an eight per cent decline in sales over the past seven days yet still managed to leave Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars trailing in its wake.
Elsewhere, Crysis 2 fell a place to number three followed at four by FIFA 11, the football juggernaut, which is still going strong aided by the backing of several retailer promotions. Similarly Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters dropped one place to five with sales having held up following the dramatic golfing tournament of just over a week ago.
Shift 2: Unleashed, the latest incarnation of Need For Speed franchise, was the week’s biggest loser tumbling from five to the lowly position of ten.
Do you think Zumba Fitness will make it to three weeks in a row at number one? Do you know anyone who bought it? Are you willing to name and/or shame them via the internet? Let us know via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Moleskine notepad app available for iPhone Posted: 18 Apr 2011 07:58 AM PDT
Category your memories without the aid of the trusty pen and paper. It's not just our favourite tech, gadgets, movies, sub-par sportsmen and music that have cult followings, good old fashioned notepads do to, so it's with great pleasure that we report news of Moleskine's official app for iOS devices.
Yes, the "legendary notebooks" used by the likes of Ernest Hemmingway, Pablo Picasso and that hipster wannabe poet from your local Starbucks have transcended paper and made their way onto the App Store
The free download, which allows you to pick your favourite notebook style - ruled, plain or squared - apparently "allows you to express your creativity through text, images and sketches."
The idea is to harness the power of creative thought wherever it may strike, and use the app to make notes, or draw on the screen. You can then save and geo-tag the note on your device or share it via for favourite means of networking socially.
The Moleskine app is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch now. We can see sketching using your fingertips being a bit haphazard though. Artists might want to stick to the old notebook for that, but this is a great alternative to Apple's native Notes app.

Having been formerly unveiled with a 1GHz dual-core processor at February’s Mobile World Conference convention in Barcelona, Samsung recently announced it was to up the processing power of the Samsung Galaxy S II to a market leading 1.2GHz dual-core offering ahead of the device’s May 1st UK release date.

Atrix to land early May with Lapdock adding £300 to price tag UK mobile network provider Orange has officially revealed that the eagerly awaited dual-core Motorola Atrix handset will hit British soil early next month. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
| T3 Tech Videos
Dropping in at the higher end of the price range spectrum, the Atrix will hit the Everything Everywhere partner in the same month as its main rivals the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation touchdown, with a £35 per month contract giving wannabe users 600 monthly minutes, 750MB of data and unlimited text messages.

Obama: White House technology is '30 years behind' Posted: 18 Apr 2011 04:25 AM PDT
The Oval Office is lacking in swish gear US President Barack Obama has expressed his disappointment that the technological equipment available at the White House is not as fancy as he thought it would be.
"I always thought I was gonna have, like, really cool phones and stuff," complained Obama at a fund-raising event in his home town of Chicago. "We can't get our phones to work."
"Come on, guys. I'm the President of the United States!” lamented an exasperated Obama. “Where's the fancy buttons and stuff and the big screen comes up? It doesn't happen." According to the President, the situation isn’t much better at his military and intelligence agencies either, "It's true in the Pentagon. It's true in the agencies. It's true in the Department of Homeland Security,"
It seems Obama will have to settle for his admittedly posh kit designed for the average man, having revealed last month at a town hall meeting he owns an iPad as well as his high-security Blackberry.
Were you expecting more from the Presidential kit? Or do you think Barack is bluffing and there’s some tech too top secret to let on about? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Nintendo Wii 2: stream games on controller Posted: 18 Apr 2011 03:02 AM PDT
New feature suggests Ninety is getting serious with Wii 2. Just hours after the Wii 2 was comprehensively detailed, a new report has emerged suggesting the new console’s HD screen-packing controller will double up as a handheld console.
IGN has scooped details which suggest gamers will be able to sync titles to the controller, allowing them to play “entire games” on the device, rather than using the TV. With the screen said to be 6-inches across, that sounds like something we could get on board with.
The Wii 2 is expected to land in June at this year’s E3 gaming expo in LA. The new hub is said to have hi-def skills that make the PS3 and Xbox 360 look positively ancient. The console is expected to be released next year.

Microsoft Bing closes in on search giant Google Posted: 18 Apr 2011 02:49 AM PDT
Microsoft sees Bing market share grow year-on-year Microsoft’s search engine is closing the gap on rival Google after it was found that Bing was the fastest growing search engine in the UK over the past 12 months.
Whilst Google’s dominant 90 per cent share of the online search industry remains relatively unbothered by Bing’s rise, the study, carried out by Experian Hitwise, shows the fledgling search option wrangled 0.66 per cent of the market from the search giant.
Speaking on the findings Research Director at Experian Hitwise, Robin Goad said: "Microsoft is starting to make inroads into Google's massive share of the search market, although Google remains the clear leader in absolute volume terms." He added: "It is vital that brands closely monitor the changing trends in the search market, as search typically accounts for between 40-50% of a website's inbound traffic."

HP Touchpad: cloud-based music store primed Posted: 18 Apr 2011 02:25 AM PDT
New service detailed in leaked Powerpoint presentation. HP is working on its own music store for the forthcoming TouchPad, which allow owners to store and access their tunes in the cloud. The new Amazon Cloud Drive rival is also expected to get a video store companion too. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HP TouchPad video
Source: T3 Tech Videos
The news comes from a HP Powerpoint presentation, mailed to those who’d registered in interest in using the TouchPad for business. While video details remain elusive, the music service has been fleshed out in a major way.
As well as offering a place to buy new tracks, the TouchPad’s music app will let you sync and store your library in the cloud. Even better, the music you listened to most will be stashed locally, with the TouchPad working out your favourite tunes and doing the rest for you.
As if that wasn’t enough, punters will be able to stream new music too, presumably from a Spotify-style service. Streaming to smartphones like the Pre and Veer is also promised.
In all, this means that HP is about to unleash a service that has the beating of Amazon Cloud Drive, while getting something to market ahead of Google and Apple. It makes the TouchPad seem like an even more worthwhile iPad alternative.

Google Music plans going "backwards" Posted: 18 Apr 2011 01:10 AM PDT
Talks with labels have apparently reached an impasse. Google’s as-yet-unannounced music service has “gone backwards” and negotiations are “broken” according to inside sources speaking anonymously to All Things D. The iTunes rival is reportedly struggling to get going as talks with record labels reach an impasse.
Word is that Google has changed the terms of service for its new music package, which has caused record companies to hold off on signing up. However, All Things D also says that some labels remain confident of getting a deal with Google inked soon.
Google Music had been mooted for release earlier this year. It remains unclear exactly what Google plans to do, although it’s said to want to offer more than Amazon’s Cloud Drive storage service. A store that sells MP3s is a must, as Google wants to bring a full-on iTunes battler to Android. A streaming offering to rival Spotify is also expected to form part if its plans.
However, as the weeks go on, it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing Google Music soon. For more on this and the rest of the day’s gadget and tech news, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

HTC 16 megapixel Windows Phone 7 handset incoming Posted: 17 Apr 2011 11:47 PM PDT
HTC set to take lead on race for most megapixels. HTC is set to load up a 16 megapixel camera onto a spanking new Windows Phone 7 device, with a leaked promo clip giving a glimpse of what we can expect from the forthcoming handset.
As well as the super-high resolution, the camera will rock dual-LED flash too, which means it should work a treat in low light. Sadly, there’s no word on the lens or any other hardcore tech details, so we don’t know just yet whether this really will be a compact killer.
Altek currently holds the record for most megapixels, 14, with its Leo phone. HTC’s new number would crank things up a notch, but wouldn’t guarantee top quality snaps.
This new WP7 phone is yet to be named, although the leaked press shot suggests it will follow a similar design to HTC’s other mobiles packing Microsoft’s mobile OS. Excited? Or over the battle for megapixel supremacy? Have a look at the video below and tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

White iPhone 4: 26 April release planned? Posted: 17 Apr 2011 11:33 PM PDT
Phone has been MIA since announcement of iPhone 4 last summer. Apple will finally release the white iPhone 4 on 26 April according to fan site iPhoneItalia. The word comes just days after Apple confirmed that the phone would be out soon, not to mention a string of rumours pegging the device for the end of April.
The white version of Apple’s best-selling handset had been primed for release last summer, but has been majorly delayed due to problems with white paint peeling away from the device under heat.
Last month, Apple’s Phil Schiller took to Twitter to say the white iPhone 4 would be out in spring. It looks like the top exec has been true to his word. The question is, will anyone bother buying one with the iPhone 5 just months away?
Are you getting a white iPhone 4? Or are you happy with what you’ve got? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Tech Today: Apple iPad killing economy? Google Video gone Posted: 17 Apr 2011 08:25 PM PDT
The choice nuggets of tech news from an interesting weekend in the world of gadgets... The Apple iPad and Steve Jobs have been blamed for hitting a lot of tech companies in the pocket, but harming the economy in general? That seems a bit far-fetched, but it's the view of U.S. Congressman who Jesse Jackson Jnr who reckons that because you can download books and newspapers onto your iPad it harms American jobs at bookstores and publishing firms. So, one of America's most illustrious and iconic brands, up there with Coca-Cola and Ford is actually harming the economy? We're glad we write about tech, politics is just way too confusing.
Google Video RIP: Remember when Google Video was going to wipe the floor with YouTube? Well Google sort of gave up on that idea and just bought YouTube instead. Google Video uploaders were sent an email this weekend explaining that the sharing portal will be shut down on April 29th and encourages them to transfer their videos onto YouTube instead. As you were.
Dating site Match.com has brought millions of lonely hearts together down the years, but the company is now being sued by one former member claiming she was sexually assaulted by someone she met through the site. The woman wants all would-be Match.com members to be screened to ensure they're not sexual predators.
Apple's iPhone 4 is about to become the camera most used to upload photos to Flickr. The device is about to over-take the Nikon D90, which is three years old, but the iPhone 4's feat is even more impressive when you consider it's only been around less than a year.
Sales of the Sony PSP console have beaten those of the Nintendo 3DS in Japan for the second week in a row. The PlayStation Portable shifted 35,478 units in the land of the rising sun, while Nintendo's new handheld device only managed 32,910. A spokesperson for Sony said: "Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Mario son". Not really, but we can always hope...
