Tech Today: Apple iPad for £250? PSPgo gone

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 02:30 PM PDT

It's the tech news that broke after you logged-off

The Apple TV set-top box has enjoyed somewhat of a re-birth since was overhauled as a cheaper, sleeker, streaming-only device late last year. Now that it seems to be resonating with the tech buying public who have now snapped up 2 million Apple TV boxes, according to recent a survey of Apple suppliers. Now, let's get a few more apps on the UK model. How about LOVEFiLM and iPlayer for starters.

Sony's PSPgo console arrived on the scene full of promise after ditching the UMD cartridges, but the streamlined device fell flat on its face and Sony has now discontinued the PSPgo on UK shores. Once the current supplies are sold they won't be replenished with the company gearing up for a the Next Generation Portable launch planed for later this year.

The Apple iPad and other tablets are too expensive to catch on with the general public according to a new poll from YouGov. The device may have been snapped up by Apple fans, but the survey concludes that there'll need to be an iPad price cut to around £250 for it to go fully mainstream. That probably applies more to faltering Android tablets like the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which have struggled to convince would-be tablet owners that they're worth over £500.

Intel doesn't know the meaning of the word recession apparently after posting a monumental net income of $3.2 billion for the first quarter of 2011. That's pure profit and that's a company record. Apple announces its Q1 results tomorrow and while success is guaranteed, it'll be nothing like this.

Fans of the Terminator film franchise hold this day in infamy. After John and Sarah Connor postponed the planned August 29th 1997 nuclear apocalypse known as Judgement Day in T2, it took until April 19th 2011 for defense computer Skynet to become self-aware and reduce the majority of the human race to a pile of steaming rubble. If you're sci-fi fans like us, you spent the entirety of Tuesday looking skywards fearing the incoming Armageddon, but if you're reading this on Wednesday morning it looks like we're ok. Thanks, Arnie.

News@8pm: iPad 3 specs leak and Playbook launches

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

iPad 3 talk has hit the headlines today as rumours are abound that the iPad 3 will contain a 2 GHz dual-core processor after Samsung yesterday announced its intention to do the same in smartphones by 2012. By the time the iPad 3 is released however, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 should have already hit the UK with Vodafone Australia preparing the tablet for pre-order with a view to begin shipping on 1 May.

BlackBerry Playbook, RIM's answer to the iPad launched in the US today for $500, while UK retailer Phones4U opened online BlackBerry PlayBook pre-registration.

White iPhone 4 anticipation continues to rise (well, for some), and a leaked video apparently showed off an updated iPhone iOS and Spotlight on the handset. The brightly-hued handset also made a brief appearance on mobile network Three's white iPhone 4 holding page before swiftly pulling the plug. Not without revealing a few more details mind you.

Finally, in a round-up of the other notable news stories of the day, it was revealed that half of Britons regret their latest choice of mobile phone with many getting angry at the quick rate of updated handsets. That could well see an Android backlash after it was revealed that Google's OS powers four in ten smartphones.

Making the announcement Google said: "Today, we're thrilled that the Royal Household has just announced that footage of the entire ceremony will be live-streamed on their official YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/theroyalchannel," The net giant added: "The live stream will begin at 10:00am BST (9:00am GMT, 2:00am PT, 5:00am ET) on Friday, 29 April, and will follow the wedding procession, marriage ceremony at Westminster Abbey and balcony kiss.

White iPhone 4 video leaks with new iOS and spotlight

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 08:36 AM PDT

Apple seem to be offering a 64GB storage capacity version as well

Details of the soon to be released white iPhone 4 appear to have leaked via a YouTube video showing a handset with upgraded iOS and spotlight search.

In the clip made by prolific leaksters Tinhte, a “test version” of iOS is displayed with a brand new multitasking menu which swaps the current use of apps’ icons to represent tasks with a visual of each app’s open window.

Furthermore, this is accompanied by a new “Search iPhone” dialog at the top of that screen which transports users into a similar looking Spotlight search to its current incarnation.

At present, T3 is unable to establish how legitimate the featured operating system is meaning we could just be looking an accomplished jailbreak mod.

A second video showcasing the handset’s hardware however, points to the software’s validity given the presence of the Touch Fighter app which Apple built to show off the capabilities of earlier iPhones. The video also displays a 64GB storage capacity on the phone’s Settings menu.

Do you think we are looking at the new iOS 5, an unreleased version of iOS 4 or the handiwork of a nerd with too much time on his hands? Let us know via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Half of Britons 'regret' their latest mobile choice

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 08:22 AM PDT

Survey says 52 per cent of Britons wish they had chosen a different phone.

The majority of mobile phone owners are unhappy with their choice of handset and wish they had waited for an updated model to land, a new study has found.

A poll of 1,987 people for goodmobilephones.co.uk has found that 54 per cent of respondents wished they had held back on their purchase because ‘a newer model had become available soon afterwards’.

A further 26 per cent of those who replied said they had found a model they ‘preferred’ after they committed to the purchase with many now planning on paying out their contract in order to update to their newly desired device.

Perhaps indicatively of the purchasing power of those who regretted their choice of mobile, 43 per cent said they would have preferred an iPhone, whilst 28 per cent said they would have chosen a BlackBerry.

To achieve their desired upgrades, 32 per cent of respondents confirmed they had paid off a contract to get a new handset. Furthermore, an unsurprising figure of 66 per cent of those surveyed wanted shorter contracts to become available, so that they could upgrade sooner.

iPad 3 rumours: 2GHz dual-core processor to feature

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 07:57 AM PDT

Apple's iPad 3 to feature same 2GHz dual-core processor as leaked Samsung phone

With the iPad 2 almost a month old and now long forgotten, attention has turned to the presumably long-off arrival of the Apple iPad 3 with new reports suggesting the next-generation tablet will land with a hefty 2GHz dual-core processor.

The rumours have been kicked into overdrive on the back of Samsung, the company responsible for providing Apple with its mobile CPU chips, claiming it will launch the world’s first 2GHz dual-core smartphone within 12 months.

With a Samsung spokesperson boldly claiming earlier this week “we are planning to release a 2GHz dual-core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year,” the iPad 3 rumour mill has been handed a golden nugget to run with as many now suggest next year’s iPad arrival will boast the same processor as the mooted mobile.

Whilst many now eagerly await a 2GHz dual-core touting iPad, Apple may soon be looking for a new supplier of its A4 and A5 processing chips after the Cupertino firm announced it was to sue Samsung over patent infringements and claimed copycat tactics with similarities between the iPhone and iPad being made to Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab.

What features would you like to see included on the mooted iPad 3, is a 2GHz dual-core processor anywhere near the top of that list? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Justin Bieber YouTube reign toppled by Rebecca Black

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 06:49 AM PDT

The much derided star grabs 112 million views

Before 10 February few were familiar with the now ubiquitous phrase “Gotta get down on Friday”, yet just over two months later Rebecca Black has toppled Justin Bieber with the most viewed channel on YouTube.

The 13 year old singer’s ode to the weekend grabbed half a million more hits than Bieber's channel on the video sharing website, topping the 112 million views mark on the way, according to the monthly most viewed chart on famecount.com.

When judged against his more mature competitors though, Bieber remains royalty on the video sharing website.

Lady Gaga held the third most popular channel with a comparably paltry 86 million monthly views, whilst the Black Eyed Peas and Jennifer Lopez ranked at fourth and fifth respectively with 78 million viewers each.

Black is currently said to be working on a new EP of material to follow-up what has been labelled ‘the worst song ever’ but even this may not be enough to keep her prestigious title.

The Californian teenager’s daily views are said to be on the slide, whilst she still has some way to beat Bieber’s 1.5 billion total views to date.

Most-used Android and iPhone apps now topping charts

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 05:28 AM PDT

It's not the most downloaded, but the most used that will win big.

Both Apple and Google have modified their app ranking system to rewards applications that are used more often with higher positions in the charts.

The change in algorithm, from both companies, monitors how many active users an application has rather than how many downloads it earns over a period of time.

The changes will likely mean more top tier positions for our favourite social networking and video streaming apps, while flavour of the month games and big name disappointments are likely to enjoy a less sustained position in the upper echelons. Facebook has already enjoyed a surge, rising to the top of Apple's free app chart, after spending ages hovering between 10 and 20.

The new algorithms are believed to have been altered by Google in March, whereas Apple's switch in tact is thought to be much more recent.

Peter Murray of analytics firm Flurry says: "We've been noticing changes in the 'Top Free' rankings for at least three days now. From our point of view, Apple is absolutely considering more than just downloads, which we believe is the right direction to go to measure the true popularity of an app."

BlackBerry PlayBook UK release to hit Phones 4U

Retailer announced PlayBook release day availability

With the BlackBerry PlayBook officially going on sale in the US and Canada today, UK retailer Phones 4U has revealed it is to offer the RIM tablet from launch in the UK with pre-registration now available online.

Touting the BlackBerry PlayBook as “the world’s first professional grade tablet,” Phones 4U has announced that the 7-inch device is “for those who MEAN business, not just those IN business,” and will be available when it lands in the UK with all five of the UK’s major networks acting as carrying partners.

With users able to register their interest in the device online now via the Phones 4U website, those eager to pick up the BlackBerry PlayBook when it hits the UK on a yet unannounced date will be able to select their network of choice with the retailer revealing Everything Everywhere partners Orange and T-Mobile will be joined by O2, Vodafone and Three with PlayBook packages.

Available in the US and Canada today with the 16GB offering priced at $500 (£307), the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook will come with hosting a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and dual HD cameras with a 5-megapixel rear-mounted offering joined by a 3-megpixel offering on the front.

Google's Android OS powers four in ten UK smartphones

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 03:52 AM PDT

New research shows Android's smartphone market share rise 29% in a year.

Google’s Android operating system last year grabbed a 37.4 per cent market share of UK smartphone sales placing it comfortably ahead of both the Blackberry RIM and Apple iOS platforms, new reports have shown.

The technology giant’s strategy of licensing Android across handsets produced by numerous mobile manufacturers has paid dividends with 73.8 per cent of Android’s new customers having previously owned a non-smartphone.

Similarly, 74.9 per cent of new iPhone buyers were revealed by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech's sales survey not to have purchased a smartphone prior to their Apple handset adoption.

In the 12 weeks ending 20 March 2011, Android not only dominated in Blighty but also in France and the USA with Blackberry’s traditional stronghold in North America collapsing from 32.5 per cent to just 12.9 per cent.

Interestingly despite having been described as a ‘burning platform’ by Nokia's new CEO, Stephen Elop, Symbian remains the number one smartphone platform in Germany with a 30.5 per cent market share. However, this figure is down from 47.3 per cent one year ago.

Dominic Sunnebo, Consumer Insight Director for Global, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech commented: “If you have any interest in technology, the phenomenon that is Android is unlikely to have passed you by. Our market share figures reveal that far from playing catch up, Android is now dominating the sector in many key territories.”

Angry Birds Magic Nokia game uses NFC technology

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 03:44 AM PDT

New Angry Birds adventure that requires a bit of help

Nokia has announced that an exclusive new Angry Birds game is set to launch which will require using NFC (Near Field Communication) to access new levels.

- Angry Birds Magic pictures

Set to be previewed at the WIMA conference this week, Angry Birds Free with Magic includes twenty levels of pig-smashing carnage, but just five of the levels can be completed as you would do normally.

To enjoy more of the action, you'll need to find someone with a NFC supported phone to unlock another five levels. To access the next five levels you'll need to find someone else again with a NFC-enabled phone and the same for the last five levels.

Alternatively if you don't fancy bumping handsets, NFC tags which could be embedded in specific items will also extend your Angry Birds Magic gaming.

Angry Birds Magic is set to be pre-installed in the Nokia C7 along with the arrival of the Symbian Anna update. Future Nokia handset releases in 2011 with NFC support will also get to play. Rovio says it is also working on bringing a full version of the game which will be available through the Ovi Store.

You can check out Angry Birds Magic in the video below.

BlackBerry PlayBook on sale now in the US for $500

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 03:04 AM PDT

But don't expect native email support

It’s been a long time coming, but now the BlackBerry PlayBook has finally gone on sale… in the US at least. The tablet hits stateside stores today, having first been announced in early 2010.

The 7-inch tab, which is being aimed at both business professionals and more casual users, is on sale for $500 (£306) for the 16GB WiFi model. 32GB and 64GB will set you back $600 and $700 - £367 and £429 – respectively.

The tablet runs BlackBerry’s bespoke QNX operating system, but it will be able to take advantage of apps from the Android app store. It’s not yet available with 3G, but that will be coming soon. Also missing – and has been widely reported – is a native email client, which is a fairly big faux pas for a tablet aimed at business use. Manufacturer RIM’s CEO Jim Balsillie said of the issue that they will have "an over the air email client to announce very, very soon.”

For us the the UK, the PlayBook is now available for pre-order through several suppliers such as PC World and Currys. Are you planning on picking up a PlayBook when it lands here? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Twitter set to buy Tweetdeck

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 03:01 AM PDT

News of deal comes from Wall Street Journal report.

Twitter is looking to buy Tweetdeck for $50 million. That’s according to, “…people familiar with the matter,” who have spoken to the Wall Street Journal. There’s no word yet on what the deal means for either party.

As Electronista points out, Tweetdeck is largely based in the UK. With Twitter said to be wanting to open a London office, this acquisition would certainly help in the service growing its presence on these shores.

There’s no official line from either company on whether the deal is going through soon. But seeing as Tweetdeck’s desktop application is far smarter than the official Twitter one, you can expect to see some features be shared if a deal is struck.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 release date set as May 1st

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 02:49 AM PDT

10.1-inch Samsung tablet hits pre-orders

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been made available for pre-order by Vodafone Australia with the iPad rival scheduled to begin shipping on May 1st.

Source: T3 Tech Videos
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Originally announced during February’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona with a 1GHz dual-core processor and Google’s tablet centric Android 3.0, Honeycomb OS, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 later went on a diet shedding precious millimetres from its form factor following the unveiling of the slim line Apple iPad 2.

Alerting customers who registered interest in the upcoming device online, Vodafone Australia has begun issuing pre-order emails stating the Galaxy Tab 10.1 can be snapped up for a limited time before being made publicly available for pre-release purchase on April 20th. Being offering with a complementary book cover style case, the 10-inch tablet as a standalone device will set wannabe owners down under back a hefty AU$729 (£470).

Whilst no UK release date has yet been given for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, if a May 1st release was rolled out globally we would see both of Samsung’s lead MWC unveilings touch down on the same day as the 1.2GHz dual-core Android 2.3 Galaxy S II smartphone readies itself for a May Day launch.

Can the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 challenge the iPad 2 or is the Apple tablet untouchable atop the tablet ranks? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo Wii price slashed

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 01:10 AM PDT

Is the Wii 2 getting a step closer with latest price cut?

The Nintendo Wii has been given a hefty price cut by US retailers, with the console now up for grabs for just $170 (£104) at Best Buy, Target, Amazon and GameStop. The move comes ahead of an official price cut, rumoured for next month.

While those deals are impressive, UK gamers can nab the black version of the console from Amazon for £98.98, with Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort and one controller. It seems stores are trying to clear stock, with the Wii 2 rumoured to be making an appearance at this year’s E3.

The updated version of the console is expected to cram in HD smarts, while the controller will pack a HD screen for playing games when the TV’s off.

Samsung sued by Apple for 'copying iPhone'

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 11:50 PM PDT

Apple and Samsung set to go toe-to-toe in court.

Apple has just fired the starting gun on what could be one of the tech world’s biggest ever lawsuits. The Cupertino company has accused Samsung of “copying” the iPhone and iPad, naming a string of Sammy devices in papers filed in California last week.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Samsung Galaxy S2 video

Source: T3 Tech Videos
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apple says the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, Epic 4G, Google Nexus S and Galaxy Tab are all derived from either the iPhone 3G or iPad. And Jobs and co haven’t held back in saying just what they think of the Korean giant.

"Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple's technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products."

It doesn’t get much clearer than that in the world of legal tussles, but just in case, Apple has added some pics to the lawsuit showing the devices in question side by side. Apple is asking for damages and even wants a ruling to say that Samsung was wilful in its attempts to copy Apple’s best-selling kit.

Expect to hear more about this case during tonight’s Apple conference call, when doubtless some wag will ask the company’s opinion on its Android rivals. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.

White iPhone 4 hits Three

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 11:34 PM PDT

Network yanks down page selling white iPhone 4 just hours after putting it up for sale.

The white iPhone 4 finally went on sale in the UK last night, with Three loading the long-awaited blower up onto its website. But within hours of hitting virtual shelves, the phone was pulled by the network.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apple iPhone 5 video: Rumour round-up

Source: T3 Tech Videos
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

No one was actually able to buy the phone, which was being offered on a £35 a month two year deal, with unlimited data, 5,000 texts and 2,000 minutes. The blower was due to be delivered to punters tomorrow, 20 April.

Three’s move comes just 24 hours after an Italian iPhone fan site claimed that the white iPhone 4 would go on sale on 26 April. This is the closest we’ve come yet to the lightly-hued cell making it out officially into the wild.

While Three’s decision to pull the phone is disappointing, don’t be surprised to see it back up for sale at a string of different carriers in the coming weeks.
