News@8pm: Samsung Galaxy S II upgrade and iPad 2 issues Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. New dual-core smartphones were the talk of tech town today with news on two of the hottest dual-core handset yet emerging. Already announced and awaiting an official release the Samsung Galaxy S II has been given an unexpected boost adding a 1.2GHz dual-core processor in place of its expected 1GHz offering. Following that Motorola Droid 2X pictures have leaked online outing the dual-core Android device.

Apple iPad issues have emerged as Apple pulls the iPad 2 from Best Buy stores. The move to remove the recently released iPad 2 from the retailer came after it emerged Best Buy was holding stocks back from eager buyers. Elsewhere on the Apple front the Cupertino tech giant has release a patent for hybrid e-link-LCD displays that could find their way in to a new breed of tablet devices.
Nintendo 3DS sales have been struggling since the device launch with thousands of early adoptors returning the glasses-free 3D console, or so reports and analysts claim. One surprising sales fact, however, is that the 3DS is being outsold by the PSP in Japan. More on the portable games consoles and the PSP is to add Music Unlimited on April 14th further scuppering the 3DS' domination plans. Leaked dual-core Motorola smartphone pictures revealed Posted: 08 Apr 2011 07:02 AM PDT Droid 2X caught on camera Images of a mooted dual-core Motorola handset have leaked online with the zippy Android device snapped running version 2.2 of the mobile operating system, FroYo.
The pics, which come via Android Central, appear to show the repeatedly rumoured Motorola Droid 2X, a device which, as its name suggests, will come with twice the processing power of a single-core handset thanks to its rumoured 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor.
Whilst the photos offer little information about the handsets spec, those responsible for the leak claim the handset is set to launch touting a 4.3-inch LCD touchscreen display, 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera. The now traditional front-facing camera is, based on the leaked shots, errant from the Droid 2X.
Although pictured running the now dated Android 2.2 operating system, it is expected the dual-core handset from Motorola will make the jump to Android 2.3, Gingerbread prior to an official announcement.
Are dual-core handset the now expected benchmark of smartphones or a passing trend that will soon be overlooked by further improvements? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona back in February the Galaxy S II, which will follow on from the hugely successful Galaxy S, is set to land with a healthy array of specs including an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera capable of 1080p Full-HD video capture, a second front-facing snapper, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display and a stunning slim form factor that measures in at just 8.9mm thin.

Microsoft launches Bing app for Apple iPad Posted: 08 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT A more attractive alternative to Google Microsoft has launched its first app for the Apple iPad and it's a rather lovely-looking version of its Bing search engine.
The Bing app, which is free to download from the App Store, is hoping to offer a more attractive and intuitive alternative to searching using Safari or the new standalone Google Search app.
Upon launch the app presents a series of those visually pleasing homescreen images Bing has sought to employ along with a search bar at the top of the page, and a series of categories such as Weather, News, Maps, Movies, Finance and Trends.
Hitting Weather will instantly bring up the weather for your locale with a nice, innovative sliding UI indicative of many of the apps we've seen grace the iPad's screen. The News section shows off the top stories of the day from a range of sources (not just msnbc) with a category-centric approach that reminds us of the Pulse News app. The Movies offer trailers and showtimes.
Bing for iPad also boasts voice search, powered by TellMe, which works a lot better when you speak in an American accent. We tried searching for T3.com and it brought up results for Beckham. Go figure. When you're done with the search, you can swipe to the left and right to access previous searches or return to the homescreen.
In saying that, on first impressions, Bing for iPad is brilliantly designed and an absolute joy to use. It could do with some better sharing options (it only offers the chance to email or copy the link) but on the whole this looks to be a fantastic addition to the App Store and a real alternative to the Google search options.

Weird News: Commodore returns and F-35 ejector seat Posted: 08 Apr 2011 03:37 AM PDT A look at the more eccentric side of tech world's last seven days
Filling a legion of gaming fans with enough gaming nostalgia to last an entire year, Commodore USA is bringing the C64 back to life with a modern twist. Essentially working like a Windows PC, you'll find most of the design elements intact from the iconic 80's gaming machine, with enough of a processor punch to carry out your usual computing tasks. An in-built Commodore emulator may also convince you to part with your cash when it arrives in June. MORE: Commodore 64 pictures
Giving us a glimpse into the future of how to scarper from a F-35 stealth fighter plane, video footage of a new ejector seat has been released with spectacular results. The joint US-European attack aircraft venture is currently going through a series of tests which include hurtling the ejector seat while travelling down a test track at an excess of 600mph. You can see exactly what that looks like by watching the video below.
Milton Keynes: Slowest broadband town around Bad news if you live in the Buckinghamshire town and want to get in some serious internet action, after it was revealed that Milton Keynes has the slowest UK broadband speeds in the country. So another reason to uproot then...
Bucks is back in the headlines and if you're quite comfortable to walk around in your Birthday suit, you could be interested in a series of vacancies currently advertised by web software developer Nude House. The company is currently on the look out for female coders and sales staff of any gender willing to work in the office buck (ahem) naked. If you are interested, you can look forward to an office setting with warm temperatures, showers and a collection hamper for soiled sitting material. Nice...
Old woman takes down the internet You'd think it would take more than just a spade to cut an entire nation off from the world wide web, but that is exactly what happened in Armenia after a 75-year old Georgian woman took down internet access while digging for copper. Cutting internet access in neighbouring Armenia for around 12 hours, the woman now dubbed the 'spade hacker' could face imprisonment for her digging antics. Hackers take note..

Apple patent unveiles e-ink LCD hybrid tablet plans Posted: 08 Apr 2011 03:20 AM PDT Apple to take tablet hints from Kindle Apple is reportedly working on ‘hybrid’ e-ink-LCD displays that a recently revealed patent filed by the Cupertino company suggests could be used in a new breed of tablet devices.
Imitating the hybrid displays that have already been developed by the likes of Pixel Qi, Apple’s patent outlines a display that would enable users to manually switch part of, or the entire full colour LCD display to a monochrome low-power e-ink offering.
Dubbed simply “Systems and Methods for Switching Between an Electronic Paper Display and a Video Display,” the patent which would allow certain sections of the screen to utilise the e-ink technology whilst others continue to rock full LCD benefits, could prove a boost to digital newspapers and magazines with text sections using the e-ink and pictures and video content making use of the LCD credentials.
Would a e-ink-LCD hybrid tablet device prove useful for you? Let us know what you think of Apple’s latest patent via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PSP getting Music Unlimited on 14 April Posted: 08 Apr 2011 03:19 AM PDT News comes days after exec let slip Sony's music streaming plans. The PSP is set to get Sony’s Music Unlimited streaming service on 14 April. That’s the official word straight from Sony, which announced the news via its PlayStation blog.
To play nice you’ll need a PlayStation Network ID, as well as finding the monthly subscription fees. The basic offering costs £3.99 and gets you access to genre-specific channels, while £9.99 lets you browse a catalogue of over 6 million songs.
Music Unlimited had been promised for the PSP by a Sony exec earlier this week, but it’s a surprise that it’s hitting the PSP so soon. Word is the NGP will also be loaded up with the service when it launches later this year.

HTC Incredible 2 pictures revealed? Posted: 08 Apr 2011 02:21 AM PDT New Incredible set to marvel this month? Images speculated to be of the HTC Incredible 2 have emerged, which could support news of the handset leaked in a HTC roadmap last month.
Pocketnow have managed to get hold of what look like press shots of the new Incredible, which could well be named the Droid Incredible 2 judging from the Droid eye logo used in the pictures.
That also means it's likely to launch in the US first, but with the recent arrival of the HTC Incredible S on these shores, we hope it will make it to the UK as well.
No specs have been discussed as yet, but we imagine it will ramp it up on the processor front, and get packed with Android 2.3.
A HTC event is set to take place next week where we expect to hear more about dual-core toting handsets the HTC Sensation (also known as the HTC Pyramid) and HTC Evo 3D. Will the Incredible 2 join in on the unveiling action? Will let you know as soon as we know.

Microsoft: don't use Windows Phone 7 hack Posted: 08 Apr 2011 01:11 AM PDT Hack has been taken down, but Microsoft still issues warning. Microsoft has warned Windows Phone 7 users not to jailbreak their phones in order to access a homebrew version of its forthcoming “NoDo” copy and paste update. In an official blog post, the Big M says going down the unofficial route could irreparably damage handsets.
Microsoft was responding to the release of a “work around” hack, posted online earlier this month but since removed at the company’s request. It said that impatient users should hold fire, offering the usual kind of warnings against straying from the official update route.
“If you attempt one of these workarounds, we can’t say for sure what might happen to your phone because we haven’t fully tested these homebrew techniques,” says Microsoft’s Eric Hautala in the blog post. “You might not be getting the important device-specific software we would typically deliver in the official update. Or your phone might get misconfigured and not receive future updates.”
The NoDo update had been promised for February, but an initial software boost was found to brick phones, causing the copy and paste-packing upgrade to be delayed.

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:07 AM PDT Figures suggest 3DS isn't quite as popular as Ninty would hope. The Sony PSP is outselling the Nintendo 3DS in Japan, latest official figures have shown. The ageing platform shifted around 15,000 more units than the spanking new three dimensional hub.
The PSP sold 58,075 in the last week, up 7,000 on the week before. By contrast, the Nintendo 3DS slid back by 8,000, selling just 42,979. Nintendo revealed earlier this week that the 3DS sold 113,000 units in its first days on sale here in the UK.
The numbers don’t make pretty reading and come as Nintendo battles specious press reports about health issues caused by the console’s 3D screen. These have been refuted by experts, but it all makes for a difficult week at Nintendo HQ.
Why do you think the 3DS is lagging behind the PSP? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple and Best Buy in iPad 2 dispute Posted: 07 Apr 2011 11:48 PM PDT Gadget retailer had been holding back stock. Apple has pulled the iPad 2 from US outlets of Best Buy, after the retail giant was found to be holding back stock. Word is stores were telling punters the iPad 2 was unavailable when in reality they’d simply reached a daily sales quota.
According to an anonymous Best Buy staffer, Apple has decided to stop selling the iPad 2 at Best Buy. What’s more, top exec Tim Cook is said to be handling negotiations, suggesting Jobs and co are taking this pretty seriously indeed.
There’s no word on whether UK Best Buy stores have been affected. Unofficial figures suggest the iPad 2 has already sold in excess of 2.5 million units, as the slate continues to dominate the competition.

Facebook has gone all green on us by announcing new energy efficient server tech which it plans to share with the world, open source style. The PSP is still big in Japan and in the last seven days it has been bigger than the Nintendo 3DS. The PlayStation Portable console sold 58,075 units in the land of the rising sun, while Nintendo's rival shifted only 42,979. The reason? A new dating simulator called Amagami. While we can't expect that success to be replicated in the US or the UK, it's a rare moment of triumph for the PSP.
Official-looking press shorts of the HTC Incredible 2 handset have surfaced as US network Verizon plans to unleash its next exclusive HTC Droid release. Rumours had been abound Stateside that the UK Incredible S release might get an airing over the Atlantic, but this seems to answer that.
Refreshing your Facebook feed to see that there's an imminent terrorist threat might be a little bit more intense than the laughing baby video you were hoping for, but the US Government is planning to utilise social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to notify the masses of threats.
Playing video games regularly damages your chances of going to university according to a study from Oxford University which tracked 17,000 people since 1970. Those who read books rather than played games performed better academically and had better career prospects says the report in the Guardian.
