Posted: 30 Apr 2011 03:15 AM PDT

Get ready for more racing and hot cars

Need for Speed: The Run has officially been announced by Electronic Arts (EA) for release this year.

Gamers will be going on a high-speed drive from San Francisco to New York, as a part of the underground and illicit world of racing.

The latest instalment in EA's Need for Speed series is created by Black Box and will be using DICE's Frostbite 2.0 engine to add spectacular visuals, also to be seen on Battlefield 3.

Autolog, the series' social competition service, will return for the game. The system allows gamers to connect with their friends online and compare stats and more.

EA promises to deliver a game that has: "No speed limits. No rules. No allies."

Need for Speed: The Run will land on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii and Nintendo 3DS on November 18, 2011 in UK, November 17 in Europe and November 15 in North America.

App week: Google Docs for Android, Homer on iPhone

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

Android app news: Google Docs gets native app
What a lovely addition to the Android Market Google has fashioned here. The native Google Docs app for Android allows you to create and have access to your cloud documents in a beautifully clean interface, but also has a special trick up its sleeve. There's an OCR reader on-board to enable you to take pictures of text and then transform them into editable documents.

iPhone app news: You made a wrong turn, Doh!
TomTom has added Homer Simpson to its stable of turn-by-turn voice artists for its iPhone app. The £2.99 add-on to the app will feature some signature lines voiced by Simpsons' voice actor Dan Castallaneta. Homer joins the likes of Darth Vader and Yoda as TomTom celebrity voices.

Android news: Gtalk video chat incoming
Android is getting its very own FaceTime competitor in the shape of the trusty old Gtalk IM app. Android 2.3.4, which is coming to Gingerbread phones, will feature a new version of the client which will allow video calls over Wi-Fi and 3G to Android 2.3 phones and Google Mail users.

iPhone app news: If you're not yet completely bored of...
...Charlie Sheen, there's an app for that. The MaSheen app for iPhone features a host of the Mind Torpedoes and Fastballs of Truth from Hollywood's No.1 screw-up. The £1.79 app will give you your fill of Charlie on the go, but truth be told we had our fill of him the first time somebody quoted "Duh, winning."

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

iPhone app review: Championship Manager 2011
The season is about to reach its climax, leading to a long, boring summer of cricket and tennis for die-hard football fans. One way to escape that is to continue the season all year round with a dose of Champo on the iPhone. It's a slightly scaled down version of the desktop classic, but remains a complex and enjoyable run-out.

iPad app review: AmpliTube
How about turning your iPad into a fully-functional guitar amp, complete with a whopping 11 different effects pedals to create every sound from Seattle grunge to good old British heavy metal? AmpliTube  for iPad ably performs that task. Just plug in your guitar thanks to one of the available add-ons and you're good to go.

BlackBerry App review: Battles Unlimited
Some games transcend the sophistication offered by the modern smartphone and battleships is one. Battles Unlimited for BlackBerry. This free game offers all the standard fun of playing against the computer, against another player on the same handset but also against random opponents online. All three work well and for free it's one helluva bargain

Hackers selling PSN credit card details?

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 01:48 AM PDT

The latest in the PSN hack story...

The latest report about the PlayStation Network outage is that the hackers offered to sell the credit card details. Back to Sony.

The online PlayStation network was hacked causing it to go down, and Sony recently admitted data of its 2.2 million users was stolen.

Sony is rumoured to have been offered the credit card details at a price, but refused to buy them back, according to The New York Times.

The price was reportedly set at $100,000 (nearly £60,000) but Sony has declined that they were ever offered the stolen information by the hackers.

"To my knowledge there is no truth to the report that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list," said SCEA PR boss Patrick Seybold.

Seybold also said there was no evidence that credit card data was taken by the hackers as the entire credit card table was encrypted.

HTC NFC-enabled smartphone out in Q3 2011?

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 01:35 AM PDT

HTC smartphones rumoured to get NFC tech this year

The word on the tech street is that HTC may launch an NFC-enabled smartphone in Q3 2011.

At a recent press event, an anonymous HTC sales manager reportedly told BrightSideofNews that the phone will be positioned slightly above the HTC Sensation and will be released in the third quarter of this year.

The rumoured smartphone is also said to have a 4.3-inch touchscreen.

This matches what HTC CEO, Peter Chou, said a while back about NFC technology arriving in future HTC phones.

"Mobile payments - wirelessly and securely from devices like smartphone- would be definitely the trend of the future and we'll be supporting that," said Chou last year.

Will Blighty be seeing NFC-enabled HTC smartphones this year? HTC has not officially commented on these rumours. Watch this space.

Will you be an early adopter and use NFC-tech if it was available to you? Let us know on our Twitter and Facebook pages and stay tuned in for more smartphone news.
