Galaxy S owners in Holland and Germany receive Gingerbread update, is the UK up next?

Samsung Galaxy S owners can rejoice as their cherished Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update has finally started rolling out in mainland Europe.

There are firm reports that the update has already landed in Germany, Austria and Holland, through the company’s Samsung Kies PC software tool. This exciting news makes us, here at T3, think that the UK rollout is tantalisingly close for one of 2010’s most popular smartphones.

While not a huge update features wise, Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, nevertheless promises a new on-screen keyboard, a streamlined user interface, an improved copy and paste facility and better download management.

The update will surely lift Galaxy S owners who will soon have Samsung Galaxy S2 owners waving their new dual-core 1.2GHz units around to all and sundry. Although, we have no nailed-on dates as to when the big carriers will roll the update out, for the 10 million Galaxy S owners in the wild, a Gingerbread-tasting surprise is surely imminent.

Samsung Galaxy S owners, will the 2.3.3 Gingerbread update stop you from lusting after a Galaxy S2? Tweet or post us your thoughts on our Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned for the latest news in the world of tech.

Virgin Media's 500GB TiVo box pegged for May 18 rollout

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 06:22 AM PDT

Virgin Media steps up to the plate to give Sky+ HD some serious competition

While Virgin Media’s flagship 1TB TiVo box is set to be finally released in the next few days, many tech-savvy consumers will be holding out for the cheaper 500GB version, which was announced earlier this week.

After a call to Virgin Media's designated TiVo ‘experts’, it was disclosed that the 500GB box will be released to existing customers on May 18 on a first-come, first-serve basis for just £49.95. The 'standard' box will be available to all Virgin Media's estimated 3.4m subscribers, unlike the 1TB offering which will only available to the company’s XL TV subscribers. The price vastly undercuts the 1TB model's initial £149.95 outlay, while both models will cost an extra £40 for installation.

The 500GB hard drive model will still store a hefty 250 hours of (standard-def) content and come with all the functionality of its big brother. This includes three TV tuners, which will allow viewers to watch and record one channel, while recording two others at the same time. Another handy feature included is a dedicated internal broadband modem to power the services’ plethora of connected features.

Virgin Media will be hope its improved Cisco hardware and collaboration with TiVo can help it go toe to toe with the Sky+ HD box in the hotly contested PVR market.

Will you be plumping for the ‘standard’ Virgin’s TiVo 500GB box, or upgrading to the monster 1TB model? Tweet or post us on our Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned for the latest news in the world of tech.

Ebook sales overtake US paperbacks for the first time

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 12:08 AM PDT

US figures show huge consumer demand for e-readers

The digital revolution continues apace in the old-tech world of publishing. In the US, the eBook has become the single bestselling format in American publishing for the first time, a year ahead of analysts forecasts.

The report from the Association of American Publishers, showed February’s eBook sales were $90.3m (£55.2m), compared to $81.2m (£49.8m) in paperbacks, a leap of 202.3% on the same time last year. Philip Jones, deputy editor of the Bookseller, believes that the UK is set to follow the US trend in the take-up of the technology, “the UK are a year behind but they are catching up quite fast.”

Despite the challenge of the rapidly expanding tablet market, many of which come pre-loaded with an e-reader, the figures show standalone eBook readers have carved out an important niche in a hugely competitive marketplace. Their popularity is down to choice – there are over a million free books on the Amazon Kindle – as well as a lower price-point than tablets, speedy downloads and portability.

The news comes hot on the heels of Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader becoming the best-selling product on Amazon.co.uk, way ahead of Sony and Samsung’s rival products.
