Flip video camcorders set to be axed by Cisco Systems Posted: 12 Apr 2011 08:12 AM PDT Pint-sized 'corder to land on the scrap heap? Cisco Systems has made the decision to close its Flip video camera business and cut 550 jobs which could result in the death of the Flip camera.
The California-based company who are the world's largest makers of networking computer equipment, have made the move to ditch the Flip in a move to reorganize its consumer business.
For those who currently own a Flip hardware, the company intends to "support current FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan," so there is perhaps no need to panic just yet.
A prominent player in the pocket camcorder business, the Flip has been hailed for its fuss-free recording and the ability to quickly upload content to video-sharing channels like YouTube.
Flipshare mobile apps for iOS and Android devices have also just recently been launched, so it will be interesting to see whether they will now stick around on the respective app stores.
Will you miss the Flip? Could it be resurrected by another company? Share your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

HMV launches game trade-in Android and iPhone app Posted: 12 Apr 2011 06:47 AM PDT If you want a crappy deal on your old games then grab this app immediately! HMV has outed a new smartphone app that will show gamers how much their old video games are worth in a trade-in for new titles.
The free re/play app, which is available for Android and iPhone lets you check how you can get for a game by entering the title or using the built-in barcode scanner.
Once you've checked the, most likely paltry, deal on offer from the retail outlets you can head to the store and get the asking price towards a new title. HMV says it might give first-timers the confidence to have enough to trade-in.
HMV Games re/play manager Martin Baxter said: "We're incredibly proud and excited to be the-first-to-UK-market with a games trade-in app for iPhone and Android.
"This ground-breaking app will not only become a must-have download for current trade-in users, but will encourage a whole new range of customers who may have previously lacked the confidence or awareness to trade their games in."
To make this an even better idea, the likes of HMV could start offering customers a better deal for their games, because right now, the Amazon Marketplace and eBay are far better options for gamers.

Repeatedly leaked under the moniker the HTC Pyramid, the Sensation, which will be available in two tri-shade colour schemes, is to hit the UK in May touting a 4.3-inch SLCD display and a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM 8260 dual-core processor.
In keeping with HTC’s recent spate of stylish, well manufactured, high-performance smartphones, the Sensation, which will be available in grey or purple colour schemes, will boast a uni-body crafted aluminium shell that makes the new flagship device line up at just 11.3mm thick and a mere 148 grams in weight.

iPad 3 release date: 2011 ruled out? Posted: 12 Apr 2011 02:18 AM PDT Rumours had suggested iPad 3 would land alongside iPhone 5 at September event. The iPad 3 will not be released later this year, as had previously been rumoured. That’s according to component suppliers in the Far East, who say they’ve not heard a peep from Apple about the next-gen iPad.
The news comes from Digitimes in Taiwan, which says its sources remain unconvinced that the iPad 3 will be hitting shelves this year. A series of rumours had suggested Apple would be releasing a new iPad in September.
However, with the iPad 2 rumoured to have shifted in excess of 2.5 million in its first month, it seems Apple is happy with the slate as it is. Such a short life-cycle would doubtless also cause plenty of punters to complain.
Were you hoping for an iPad 3 this year? Still reckon Apple can pull it out of the bag? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 01:00 AM PDT Hacker "Geohot" had helped exploit console's weaknesses ahead of release of PSJailbreak tool. Sony has settled its legal case with the hacker George Hotz. Hotz, also known as Geohot, had helped jailbreak the PS3 and pave the way for the PSJailbreak USB device, which allowed gamers to back-up games directly to the console’s hard drive, getting rid of the need for discs.
In an official statement on its PlayStation blog, Sony’s lawyer Riley Russell said, “Sony is glad to put this litigation behind us. Our motivation for bringing this litigation was to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal.”
Riley continued, “We want our consumers to be able to enjoy our devices and products in a safe and fun environment and we want to protect the hard work of the talented engineers, artists, musicians and game designers who make PlayStation games and support the PlayStation Network. We appreciate Mr Hotz’s willingness to address the legal issues involved in this case and work with us to quickly bring this matter to an early resolution.”
In addition, Hotz added, “It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier,” said Hotz, “I’m happy to have the litigation behind me.”
What’s even more fascinating is that Sony points out in its statement that Hotz had nothing to do with the recent cyber attacks on PSN and its PlayStation website. Hackers from the Anonymous collective had targeted Sony’s online presence in response to the lawsuit against Hotz. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Apple working on carbon fibre MacBooks? Posted: 11 Apr 2011 11:38 PM PDT Could we be about to see a slew of new-look Apple products? Apple has hired a new engineer with a background in carbon fibre, setting off rampant rumours that the Cupertino company is all set to release a string of new kit using the composite material.
Kevin Kenney has taken the role of Senior Composites Engineer at Apple. He’s already been involved with Jobs and co, his name appearing on a 2009 patent for what appears to be a carbon fibre iPad. He has also built carbon fibre bikes in the past.
Rumours of a carbon fibre Mac have gathered pace before, with the current MacBook Air the subject of such speculation. While the Air remains a mainly aluminium device, it doesn’t seem to much of a stretch that Kenney will be focusing on rejigging the current metal frames of the MacBook Pro range, as well as looking to lighten the load of the iPhone and iPad.

Motorola Xoom: 16GB model incoming? Posted: 11 Apr 2011 11:23 PM PDT Verizon getting Motorola Xoom 16GB first, but will it launch outside of US? The Motorola Xoom is currently only up for grabs with 32GB of storage. But a leaked memo from US network Verizon suggests a pared-down 16GB edition could be on its way.
The new effort looks set to debut across the pond first, with the memo (pictured here) claiming that it will be upgradeable to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. However, with Moto already pulling the trigger on a more affordable Wi-Fi-only 32GB model, chances are a 16GB Wi-Fi Xoom is also on the cards.
The move certainly makes sense for Motorola. Although it’s gone toe-to-toe with the iPad on price, it’s not got an affordable model to go up against Apple’s £399 entry-level slate. Neither have sales been that impressive, with analysts claiming the Xoom has only shifted a measly 100,000 since launch.
Would a cheaper 16GB Motorola Xoom tempt you to open your wallet? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Tech Today: Carbon fibre iPad, Facebook legal battle ends Posted: 11 Apr 2011 05:14 PM PDT The tech news that broke after you logged off The Social Network legal battle that spawned a hit Hollywood movie is finally over after a judge ruled that a set of twins who claimed Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg stole their idea cannot claim any more money as part of a settlement. The unfortunately named brothers Winkevoss were awarded compensation now worth $160m back in 2008 but were still angling for more money.
Apple's iPad 3 might well have a new casing after Apple hired a carbon fibre expert who has spend the last decade and a half perfecting bicycle frames using the material. Speculation has been rife for years that Apple has wanted to diversify from the aluminium and stainless steel casing used on the current crop of tech and this is the clearest indication yet that carbon fibre is the future.
Intel has entered the tablet game after announcing the new Oak Trail processor line they're claiming will give tablets 8.5 hours of battery life. These tablets are unlikely to challenge the Apple iPad or the Android Honeycomb crew with Intel lining up 35 devices to house the chip, most of which are Windows-packing devices
The Amazon Kindle is doing a darned good job of luring readers away from traditional paper-bound books with its very reasonable price point, but if you fancy a little sponsorship you'll be able to buy an ad-funded Amazon Kindle for $25 off RRP in some retail stores in the US. If you can put up with some adverts on the homescreen and screensavers then a Kindle will now cost you only $114.
3D displays are all the rage these days, but an Apple iPad 2 3D display? What's all that about? Well there's a new app developed that uses the front-loaded camera on the iPad 2 and a little head-tracking software to give the illusion of depth and convince the brain that there's a whole world inside your iPad's display. Who needs a 3DS?
News@8pm: If you weren't plugged into T3.com on Monday you missed some pretty big news on the tech front. There's an official Steve Jobs biography on the way, a host of news on Symbian and Bada's bid to get back into the operating system big leagues, Adobe's plans to launch iPad Photoshop apps and a whole lot more.
