Posted: 20 Apr 2011 04:17 PM PDT

It's the big tech news that broke after you logged-off

Apple announced its second fiscal quarter financial results today, revealing it has sold a colossal 18.65 iPhones since the turn of the year as well as 4.69 iPads. The quarterly profits were Apple's best ever totalling $5.9 billion, with income of $24.67 billion.

iPhone, iPad and Mac sales might have crushed it in the first three months of 2011, but iPod sales are down 17 per cent on the same period of 2010. Apple posted solid looking sales of 9.02m iPods - in their various guises - but the trend has been on the way down for quite some time now. How will Apple respond?

Xbox and PlayStation fans will have to wait until 2014 for the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 consoles, Kotaku is claiming to have heard from a source close to both companies. If true it would give the forthcoming Nintendo Wii 2 at least a couple of years headstart over Sony and Mircosoft's next consoles.

A stripper recently broke into Google's Silicon Valley headquarters according to Business Insider. Vera Svenchina, a former erotic dancer from Russia, followed a blind employee into the building and dropped off a Russian book for Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. She has previously claimed that the two men killed her father and is currently in court over accusations that she's been stalking Zynca CEO Mark Pincus.

In yet more Apple news, two security researchers have unearthed a hidden file in Apple iOS which records your every move, stores it on the device and then backs it up to your computer when you sync your iPhone or iPad. The location tracker  has raised more privacy fears as the file could be easily exploited by those with access to your phone or computer.

iPad app news: News.Me to arrive on Thursday

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 12:20 PM PDT

The iPad news aggregator wars hot up

Back in February we reported that the New York Times was plotting a rival iPad application to Apple and News Corp's The Daily tablet newspaper. It appears the wait for the app will be over tomorrow.

News.me will aggregate content from the New York Times' website, but also pull-in feeds from your social networking sites bringing articles that your friends have shared on Facebook and Twitter to try and determine which stories will be of interest to you.

Whereas The Daily will provide original content from its 100-strong editorial team, News.Me will harness existing content from the sites like The New York Times, Associated Press and Business Insider making it more similar to the blockbusting Flipboard iPad app.

Unlike Flipboard though, News.me will not be free of charge, with the Times planning to charge 99 cents a week or $34.99 a year according to today's reports.

This is the latest news aggregator to hit the iPad,  with Pulse News, Flipboard and Microsoft's Bing all impressing as means of getting your news fix in one place.

News@8pm: iPhone 5 release date and Sony PSPgo pulled

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

It’s been a mixed day for the tech behemoth Apple. It lost the element of surprise for the iPhone 5 launch date as the much anticipated handset’s September release leaked. On the upside, global tablet sales are projected to reach $49 billion by 2015 so that iPad cash cow isn’t about to dry up any time soon.

Virgin are to trial 1.5Gb cable broadband in the UK, that’s 240 times the average UK connection speed and great news for Tesco who today announced the purchase of a majority stake in blinkbox, the video-on-demand streaming service.

Those of you easily addicted to the task of gobbling yellow pills should read no further as the world’s largest Pac-Man game was unleashed today. The famous Namco mascot won’t be featuring on a PSPgo anymore as Sony today announced they had halted production of the handheld console.

Finally, controversy arouse across social networking platforms as Facebook apologised for deleting an 'inappropriate' picture of two men kissing and Twitter was revealed to shorten the lifespan of relationships by up to a shocking 10 per cent duration.

Resident Evil 6 will see complete franchise overhaul

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 11:05 AM PDT

Raccoon City set for a reboot?

Capcom has promised a complete renovation of the much-loved Resident Evil franchise for the sixth installment of the game.

The gory third-person survival game, which is yet to have a confirmed release schedule, will pay homage to the legacy of the series but boast a full rebuild compared to Resident Evil 5.

Capcom producer Masachicka Kawata says: "The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level. But we can't forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise,"

While Resident Evil 5 proved a moderately successful addition for the series we first saw back on the PSone, it's obvious that Capcom feels that things need to be freshened up a little bit in Raccoon City.

A spin-off title Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, set between the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3 is set to launch on consoles and PCs later this year.

We just hope they keep the Zombies around for episode 6

Samsung W200 underwater pocket HD cam revealed

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 09:34 AM PDT

Flip dies but Samsung enters pocket HD market to take its place.

Samsung will showcase its under-water video talents with the newly unveiled W200 pocket HD camera, which promises full 1080p hi-def footage in up to three metres of water.

The W200, which is a direct rival to T3 favourite the Kodak PlaySport, is also shockproof to 2m with a rugged red coating that reflects its positioning as a tough on-the-move device.

The device, which has a 2.3-inch LCD screen and an F/2.2 lens, also boasts 5-megapixel stills to go alongside the 1980x1020p 30 frames per second video.

The device also offers to opportunity to pause video recording and restart using the same video clip, which will probably come in handy when you're filming underwater. Unless you're a fish, you're going to have to come up for air eventually.

Video footage will be stored on an SD or SDHC card, while there's a HDMI port to enable you to play back your video creations on your hi-def telly.

With Cisco folding its once-mighty Flip camera division last week, it seems the pocket HD cam is heading very much in the direction of the convenient holiday-proof devices like the Kodak PlaySport and now the Samsung W200.

The device will be out in the US in May for $159. We're awaiting UK pricing and availability.

New Apple iPhone detailed as handset patent approved

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 08:57 AM PDT

iPhone design patent approved

Apple’s most recent mobile handset the Apple iPhone 4 has been successfully patented by the Cupertino company with a design patent for the flagship handset approved a year after it was filed.

Following on from the news earlier this week that Apple is to sue Samsung over patent infringements relating to the iPhone, iPad and similarities in Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphones and Galaxy Tab tablets, the granted iPhone 4 design patent marks a massive move for the fruity tech giant in protecting its market leading handset.

With the new patent covering the iPhone 4’s “ornamental design for an electronic device with graphical user interface,” much of the patent’s focus is placed firmly on the handset’s well documented and issue hit antenna-holding nitriding stainless steel band.

Whilst it is believed that Apple’s former executive in charge of the iPhone Mark Papermaster was forced out of the company following the global headline grabbing antennagate issues that struck the arrival of the iPhone 4, Apple’s talismanic front man and CEO Steve Jobs as well as chief designer Jonathan Ive are both amongst the names accredited to the patented iPhone 4 design.

Will the heavily rumoured iPhone 5 adopt a new form factor to that of the existing fourth-generation offering? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 4 tracks and stores your location at all times

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 08:36 AM PDT

Consolidated.db file stores all of your location data and backs it up to your PC.

Apple's iPhone 4 tracks your location wherever you go and stores the data it in a secret iOS file, a pair of security researchers have today revealed.

The iOS file, named Consolidated.db, stores your longitude and latitude while also giving the data a timestamp, and then backs up that information whenever the iOS device is synced up to a computer.

If someone were able to access that file, which according to researchers Pete Warren and Allasdair Allan isn't too tricky, they would be able to create a visualisation on a map (see right) of the user's exact movements.

Warren, who will present the findings today at the Where 2.0 conference in San Francisco, says the raises significant privacy fears.

He says: "Apple has made it possible for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you've been.

"Alasdair has looked for similar tracking code in [Google's] Android phones and couldn't find any," he added. "We haven't come across any instances of other phone manufacturers doing this."

Although mobile networks track your location, that data is only used by the police and other certified bodies, and no actual handsets perform this functionality. Google's Latitude offers this as a service, to allow friends to keep track of your movements, but that's an opt-in piece of functionality.

According to a report in the Guardian, Apple has refused to comment on the research, why the file exists and whether there is any way for iPhone owners to disable it.

Tesco buys movie-streaming service blinkbox

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 07:52 AM PDT

Video-on-demand firm has access to 9,000 films

Supermarket behemoth Tesco has bought an 80 per cent stake in blinkbox, the British video-on-demand firm.

As a majority shareholder for blinkbox, the world’s number three retailer has gained access to a catalogue of over 9,000 Hollywood films, as well as numerous television series.

The website, which has achieved a following of 2 million monthly viewers since its launch in April 2008, will allow Tesco to revamp its product line a day after missing profit hopes in its main UK market.

Richard Brasher, UK chief executive for Tesco, commented: "Whether customers want to own the DVD, download a digital movie, stream a rental or all three, Tesco is committed to giving customers choice.

"We want to allow them to decide how they access entertainment content and on which devices, whether it's on PC, TV or tablet.”

The supermarket group is currently in the midst of increasing its online retail investment with plans in motion to launch a rival to Amazon’s Marketplace in late 2011 or early 2012.

Toshbia Regza AT300 Android Honeycomb tablet outed

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 07:50 AM PDT

Tegra-2 powered tablet boasts hot specs to compliment Android 3.0.

Toshiba has today unveiled its long-rumoured Android 3.0 tablet, the Regza AT300, boasting a spec-sheet that is sure to give the rest of the Honeycomb crowd a serious run for its money.

The powerful device, set for a June launch in Japan, has an NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, underneath a attractive shell.

The LED-backlit 10.1-inch screen boasts a resolution of 1280x900 and an Adaptive Display which promises better performance in sunlight.

There's also a 5-megapixel rear and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera as well as a HDMI-out and USB, mini USB and SD card compatibility as well as promising a 7-hour battery life.

On paper this looks like a real contender for the slew of Honeycomb tablets set for release later this year. According to the Japanese press release, it'll be reaching US and European markets shortly thereafter.

Let's hope it fairs better for Toshiba than the ill-fated Folio 100 tablet we saw and then didn't see last year.

Amazon Kindle Library Lending service to launch

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 07:09 AM PDT

Check-out books and keep your annotations

Amazon is to launch a handy new feature for its Kindle reader which will allow US owners to 'borrow' ebooks from over 11,000 local libraries across the country.

Customers will be able to check out books in their digital form their libraries free of charge and read them on Kindle devices, all of the brand's smartphone applications or on their Mac or PC.

The cool thing here is that if customers check out a book more than once, or end up buying it from the Kindle Store, all of the annotations will remain in place and will be unique to your copy of the book.

Amazon Kindle Director Jay Marine says: "We're doing a little something extra here," Marine continued. "Normally, making margin notes in library books is a big no-no. But we're extending our Whispersync technology so that you can highlight and add margin notes to Kindle books you check out from your local library.

"Your notes will not show up when the next patron checks out the book. But if you check out the book again, or subsequently buy it, your notes will be there just as you left them, perfectly Whispersynced."

Although this is a US-only service at the moment, it opens the possibilities of the services being rolled out in international markets.

Virgin Media to trial 1.5Gb broadband in the UK

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:57 AM PDT

Tests planned this month to establish a speed 240 times faster than the UK average

Virgin Media is to begin testing internet speeds of 1.5Gb in partnership with four companies in the vicinity of Old Street in London.

Using the same cable infrastructure Virgin Media currently employs, the company hopes to provide a 1.5Gb download and 150Mb upload service. If tests this month in London’s ‘Silicon Roundabout’ are successful, Virgin will be able to offer the world’s fastest broadband connection at a speed 240 times faster than the national average.

The trial is taking place between Virgin Media and four companies in the creative industries. Together the group are working extensively to provide video for online and mobile streaming, produce interactive applications for the web and broadcasting services for live programmes and events.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, commented, “Our growing network provides a highly competitive alternative to the fastest fibre networks of the future ensuring Virgin Media business and residential customers continue to enjoy world-class broadband.”

Facebook apologises for removing gay kiss photograph

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:39 AM PDT

Facebook flip flops on gay photo removal

Social networking giant Facebook has backtracked on a previous decision and apologised for controversially removing a photograph of a gay couple kissing that had been uploaded to the online community.

The photograph, which was posted by Richard Metzger to accompany a gay rights blog written in retaliation to recent news that a gay couple were evicted from a London bar for kissing was taken down by Facebook with Metzger being left a notification alerting him to the removal.

Alerted to the removal of the photograph that showed two fully clothed males locking lips Metzger was accompanied by the message: ''Content that you shared on Facebook has been removed because it violated Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. Shares that contain nudity, or any kind of graphic or sexually suggestive content, are not permitted on Facebook.''

After causing a global outcry from the gay community and the general public Facebook today issued the following update in an official statement: “The photo in question does not violate our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and was removed in error. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

The well publicised apology comes after hundreds of Facebook users uploaded the photo to their profiles in disgust at Facebook’s initial decision.

Were Facebook right to remove the photograph or was doing so wildly inappropriate? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Using Twitter will end your relationship 10 per cent early

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 04:55 AM PDT

Users of the social network may be at fault for their break-ups

Relationships between those who use Twitter last 5 to 10 per cent less in duration than those who do not, new research has shown.

According to the survey of 833,987 users of dating website OkCupid, those who regularly express themselves in 140 characters are more likely to experience a stunted romantic dalliance.

Disheartened social networkers looking for a silver lining will be encouraged though, by OkCupids failure to discover if the fault lies with them. A spokesperson for the website wrote, “Unfortunately, we have no way to tell who's dumping who here; whether the twitterati are more annoying or just more flighty than everyone else.”

In other loving information released from the survey, it was revealed that those that who tweet every day are twice as likely to, erm, ‘enjoy their own company’ as those who do not. This is true across all age and gender groups so, there you go.

Are you worried about the effect Twitter might have on your relationship? Are you considering giving someone the elbow because they use the site too much? Let us know via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple TV sales top the 2 million units milestone

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 04:18 AM PDT

2 million Apple TV units sold in opening six months

Following its September rejig that saw Apple’s pet project take on a credible and desirable form the new Apple TV box has sold more than 2 million units, new reports suggest.

Having topped the 1 million sales milestone within three months of launch shortly before last year’s Christmas period, sales of the £99 content streaming device are now claimed to have surpassed the 2 million unit mark.

The figures, which come courtesy of Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at Concord Securities who compiled the numbers have trawled a host of Apple supplies, show quarterly sales of the slimmed-down, hard drive scrapping device have remained strong six months on since its official arrival.

Allowing users to stream purchasable content direct from iTunes and the store’s third party applications, the inclusion of AirPlay compatibility allows owners of multiple iOS devices, iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches, to send self sourced and self produced video content direct to their TVs.

Have you already adopted Steve Jobs’ hobby project or do you see Apple TV as an unnecessary luxury? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Global tablet sales to reach $49 billion by 2015

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:44 AM PDT

Range of products from Apple, Motorola and Samsung to create a vibrant marketplace

The global tablet market will be worth tens of billions of U.S. dollars in only four years time, new research has suggested.

By 2015 Strategy Analytics expects 150 million tablets to have been sold worldwide leading to several companies competing for the lion’s share of a $49 billion global revenue.

If this hefty 800 per cent project growth is achieved across key North American, Western European and Pacific Asian markets, then tablets would rank as the world’s third-largest consumer category behind TVs and PCs.

Currently Apple is the dominating force in the tablet market with its iPad and iPad 2 devices, yet competition has begun to hot up in recent months with BlackBerry’s PlayBook hitting store shelves in the U.S. yesterday alongside an increasing variety of Android devices.

Despite the staggering size of this projected sales figure however, it remains relatively conservative in comparison to estimates from other analysts. A Gartner study earlier this month predicted global tablet sales to reach 294 million in 2015, achieving $77.4 billion in revenue.

Likewise in a similar survey, Forrester outlined its anticipation that 82 million U.S. citizens will be using the portable devices by 2015.

Are you a tablet early adopter, how many tablet devices do you think a household will have by 2015, more than one like many PCs and TVs? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

World's biggest Pac-Man now available to play

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:26 AM PDT

Arcade classic returns in a big way

The World's Biggest Pac-Man game is now ready to play offering fans the opportunity to burn away more than a few hours.

Created by web design company Soap Creative, the enormous gameboard which has been created to showcase the capabilities of Internet Explorer 9, allows users to jump through into different rooms even if you've not completed the level. The size of the Pac-Man playing surface can be increased further by enabling gamers to create their own new levels and adding them to the gameboard.

Keeping count of pellets, ghosts eaten and rooms cleared, you can view your score at personal, regional and global levels.

Pac-Man made an equally eventful return last year after Google decided to celebrate the iconic game character turning 30 by transforming its homepage logo into the first playable Google doodle (which you can still play here).

The Pac-Man doodle inadvertently gobbled up almost five million hours of the world’s work time, and was predicted to have cost the global economy $120 million.

If you want to play, you can find the World's Biggest Pac-Man here. If you value your job, we suggest staying away.

Sony PSPgo pulled as focus shifts to upcoming Sony NGP

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:23 AM PDT

Sony end production of the PSPgo ahead of NGP arrival

The Japanese arm of Sony Computer Entertainment is reported to have officially confirmed it is to cease production of the Sony PSPgo as focus shifts to the upcoming launch of the Next-Generation Portable (NGP).

Confirming the spate of rumours that circulated yesterday regarding the end of the PSPgo’s life span, Sony reportedly informed Japanese website AV Watch that units of the UMD-less PSP first launched in 2009 will no longer be manufactured “in order to concentrate on the NGP.”

All remaining PSPgo consoles are expected to be distributed and sold through retailers until stocks of the portable gaming device are exhausted with content for existing units likely to be supported for the foreseeable future much in the same way Sony continue to produce PS2 content long after the arrival of the latest PlayStation console the PS3.

When asked about the continued production of the PSP-3000, Sony stated: "It will continue to be sold, and we will keep focusing our attention on it from here on out."

The Sony NGP is set to hit markets ahead of this year’s festive period with the next-generation portable gaming console to feature a host of innovative touch control methods and a quad-core processing chip to offer high-end graphics on the move.

Which revolutionary portable gaming device would you rather have in your pocket the Sony NGP or Nintendo 3DS? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking with news house Reuters, three anonymous sources reportedly “familiar with the matter” have confirmed the next-generation Apple blower will forgo the now traditional June iPhone unveiling, instead landing alongside the iPod refresh in September.

Whilst it is unknown what is causing this delay in the iPhone 5’s arrival and why Apple will overlook its annual product cycle, a dramatic makeover has been ruled out as the sources claim “The new smartphone will have a faster processor but will look largely similar to the current iPhone 4.”

It is widely expected that the Apple iPhone 5 will follow the recently released iPad 2 in sporting the ARM A5 1GHz dual-core processor despite Apple’s main competitors to the smartphone crown, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation both lined up to boast 1.2GHz dual-core CPU offerings.

What features would you most like to see touch down on the mooted iPhone 5 be its arrival in June or September? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
