iOS VEVO apps now live. US music video website VEVO has brought its popular service to the UK and also launched the accompanying apps for iOS devices and Android phones on these shores too.
You've all heard of VEVO, most of the new music videos you watch on YouTube are from the VEVO channel, but until now UK users have been unable to access the service due to licensing issues.
Now the library of 25,000 tracks and 7,500 artists including the likes of Lady Gaga and Eminem is live in the UK, bringing the best from record labels EMI, Sony and Universal.
The apps themselves will feature exclusive videos, charts, playlists as well as VEVO original programming. It's easy to share the songs of your choosing on Facebook and Twitter or, conveniently, buy them via iTunes.
The app also boasts AirPlay compatibility, so if you own an Apple TV box, you can send the videos to the big screen. Bonus.
Users of the free app can also save videos to custom playlists for easy access and enjoy a little bit of music trivia before watching Katy Perry, Britney, J-Lo and co do their thing.

PSN users should 'cancel credit cards immediately' Posted: 27 Apr 2011 04:33 AM PDT
Sophos urge PSN users to protect against further data abuse Reacting to the news that all 77 million PlayStation Network users could have had their credit card details stolen in the recent global hack, security specialist Sophos has issued a warning saying all PSN users should “cancel that card immediately.”
Having taken down the PlayStation Network last week following the now well publicised hack of the service, Sony recently revealed that this infiltration has made the personal data of those signed up to the service, including its 3 million UK users, vulnerable to attack.
Expanding on the imminent concerns Cluely added: "The fraudsters won't wait around - for them this is a treasure trove ripe for exploiting. You need to act now to minimise the chances that your identity and bank account become casualties following this hack."
"That means, changing your online passwords (especially if you use the same password on other sites), and considering whether it would be prudent to inform your bank that as far as you're concerned your credit card is now compromised."
Discussing the continued outage of the PSN service and the potentially damaging effect this could have on the safety of users’ information the Sophos security head said: "What's particularly frustrating for users of the PSN is that anybody unsure of what information is stored against their account such as personal information, card details and password reset answers won't know until the service is back online.
"It's crucial that access is restored as soon as possible so that users can confirm what information might have been compromised."

Following Anthony’s words, the title’s publisher Activision announced: "Set in a mysterious, ice-covered, remote Siberian island and inspired by legendary writer and director George A. Romero, a group of four fearless explorers fight for their lives amidst an army of bloodthirsty Soviet zombies."

New PS3 console confirmed by FCC filing? Posted: 27 Apr 2011 03:12 AM PDT
Some good news for PlayStation fans? A FCC filing by Sony appears to hint at the launch of a new PlayStation 3 extending the life of the seventh generation console that little bit longer.
- New PlayStation 3 console FCC filing picture
Two model numbers CECH 3001A and CECH 3001B are both accompanied by the product name, 'Computer Entertainment System (PlayStation3).' The Note column also suggests that the models have been tested.
Other than that, there are no more details pointing to a new console, but this is apparently not the first time we've seen the CECH-3001 PS3 model number crop up after first being spotted in December.
One things for sure, if Sony do have plans to launch a new PS3 console, we sincerely hope they manage to sort out that rather major PSN problem in time for it.

Sony Freestyle Hybrid PC spied Posted: 27 Apr 2011 03:02 AM PDT
Machine yet to be detailed, but expect it to land later this year. Sony’s S1 and S2 Tablets took all the headlines yesterday, but the Big S has got some more slate-based goodies lined up for later this year. Its new Freestyle Hybrid PC was also detailed briefly during the S1 and S2 showcase in Japan and it promises to be a peach.
Combining a massive touchscreen for tablet-style swipes, and a slideout keyboard for laptop action, it promises to be a sleek proposition when it finally hits shelves. Sony wasn’t forthcoming with specs, but rumour has it it’ll pack a 9.4-inch screen.
Sony also touted an ‘Ultimate Mobile PC’ at the same gathering, with USB 3.0, HDMI and a design that makes the MacBook Air look hefty. It’s also expected to be released later this year.

HP Touchpad release date edges closer Posted: 27 Apr 2011 02:18 AM PDT
Hype over forthcoming iPad-botherer starts to grow. HP’s TouchPad has edged closer to release, with the PC maker handing over details of its forthcoming iPad-botherer to the US FCC. That means the slate should be in line for a June release, as had previously been mooted.
The TouchPad gets multiple mentions in the filing, although there’s no official word on when we’ll be able to lay our hands on one. However, passing the FCC’s checks tends to mean gadgets are just weeks away from hitting shelves.
The TouchPad is the first slate to use webOS and promises to be a worthy alternative to the iPad, not to mention the growing army of Android-backed tablets. HP has ye to say when a UK version will be out in the wild.

iTunes music streaming: Apple planning fees Posted: 27 Apr 2011 01:06 AM PDT
Apple could follow Spotify and Qriocity lead, rather than go free like Amazon. Apple’s cloud-based music streaming service is set to cost, according to music industry insiders. The sources, speaking with Cnet, claim that Apple will charge a fee after initially offering its package for free.
As yet, it’s unclear whether Apple will offer a simple digital locker package along the lines of Amazon’s Cloud Drive, or if it will look to add to such a feature with Spotify-style streaming.
Currently, Amazon’s Cloud Drive is free for the first 5GB of storage, with punters having to pay if they wish to store more of their music on the retailer’s servers. Seeing as Apple, unlike Amazon, is negotiating with record labels over the streaming of songs, a monthly or annual cost for using its service would not come as a major surprise.
Google is also expected to launch its own cloud-based music offering in 2011, although talks appear to have stalled. Will Apple beat them to the punch? And will you be willing to pay for iTunes cloud? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nintendo boss: 3DS sales below expectations Posted: 26 Apr 2011 11:38 PM PDT
Ninty exec admits handheld has struggled to match hype with sales. Sales of the Nintendo 3DS have been below expectations. Those are the words of Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, speaking on the gaming giant’s official website. The handheld console’s launch has seen relatively sluggish sales, as Ninty battles to convince gamers that the 3DS is worthwhile investment.
Iwata said, “Sales were high in the initial [launch] week, but sales fell below our expectations after the second week. Nintendo 3DS has not been selling as expected since the second week, and this is not just in the Japanese market but also in the United States and Europe, where no direct impact from the great earthquake has occurred."
Iwata said Ninty needed to, “…step up its efforts,” and try to explain to the average punter the advantage of glasses-free 3D gaming. He added, "We need to enhance the contents which can be enjoyed passively by non-active users, like a 3D video distribution service. We will promptly work on this after the currently planned hardware update."
This admission shows that despite 113,000 consoles being sold in the UK alone, Nintendo is still struggling to prove that coughing up for the 3DS is worth it. Can it convince the non-believers? Or is the 3DS destined to struggle? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

PSN outage: Sony admits user data stolen Posted: 26 Apr 2011 11:22 PM PDT
Sony issues statement and confirms worst fears of 77 million PSN users. Sony has admitted that it’s lost the personal dates of millions of PSN and Qriocity users, over a week after the services were first shut down. Names, email addresses, billing addresses and possibly credit card details have all been compromised.
In an email to all PSN users, Sony said it had suffered, “…an illegal and unauthorized [sic] intrusion into our network,” and that the issue was being investigated by, “…an outside, recognized [sic] security firm.” Details that have been compromised include name, address, country of residence, PSN ID, PSN password, security questions, purchase history, email and birth date.
What’s more, Sony is refusing to rule out credit card details going missing. Its statement says, “If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.”
With 77 million PSN users, this represents a huge security breach. Sony has said that its servers were attacked between 17 and 19 April, with the company suspending PSN and Qriocity since then. It had been believed that the service was still under attack until Sony’s statement last night.
Sony has been criticised for its sluggish response, but has hit back by saying it wanted to be sure what data had been breached before it gave an official confirmation. “It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach,” said Sony’s Patrick Seybold. “We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly.”
Gamers on Sony’s official blog have reacted furiously to the news. There’s still no word on when PSN will be back, or whether Sony has even more bad news to share. If you think you’ve been affected, you can check out Sony’s official PSN FAQ for more details. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
