Facebook users will be interested to hear that an apparent loophole in the security of the world's biggest social networking site was reported today by Symantec, with the personal data of 500 million Facebook users potentially leaked to third-party internet companies. The Californian based company has denied the accusations. Elsewhere in the world of social networking, it appears Twitpic could be set to cash in on your uploaded snaps. Naturally, we get diddly squat from the deal.
Google has come clean about its plans for Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the next iteration of its open-source operating system. The software update will be out towards the end of the year and will work across both smartphones and tablets. It’s set to take the lead from the ‘holographic’ design currently found on the tablet-centric Honeycomb, whilst also offering face detection, aimed at making video calls clearer. The search giant also unveiled Android Market Movies, a film rental service for smartphone and tablet users that’s heading to the States in a few weeks.

LG Optimus handsets to come preinstalled with Angry Birds Posted: 11 May 2011 09:25 AM PDT
“We’re excited to bring one of the most successful mobile games to our customers,” said Yong-seok Jang, Vice President of Business Strategy at the South Korean company. “Angry Birds Rio will help showcase the power, smoothness and speed of LG’s Optimus series of Android smartphones to our customers.”
Being honest, the announcement from LG is essentially a publicity stunt. With the game being free to download anyway from the Android market the only thing you are saving is time. Still, that’s an extra 10 minutes to play Angry Birds...

Nexus 3 to be first Ice Cream Sandwich handset? Google’s Android head Andy Rubin has confirmed that the Californian search and tech giant is to continue its series of Nexus smartphones with the Google Nexus 3 to hit markets in the near future.
Confirming the Nexus brand will continue to dazzle the smartphone market and look to further mark itself as a leader of cutting edge mobile tech, Rubin tantalisingly teased: "We'll make an announcement at some point in the future."

Sharp unveils new Aquos SH-12C 3D smartphone Posted: 11 May 2011 07:37 AM PDT
Sharp Aquos joins HTC and LG in the 3D smartphone market Regardless of what you think to 3D, it certainly looks like the way of things to come with Sharp officially unveiling the Sharp Aquos SH-12C 3D phone to join the likes of the HTC EVO 3D, LG Optimus 3D and Nintendo 3DS in the portable 3D market.
With a resolution of 540 x 960, the glasses-free 3D qHD screen is similar to that of HTC Evo 3D, offering greater pixel density albeit slighter smaller. The smartphone is powered by a rather nippy 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 chip, 512MB of RAM and has the capacity to take a microSD up to 32GB. Android 2.3 comes as standard.
The downside? It's only being released in Japan on 20 May, with no word yet on a UK release.

App news: Twitpic wants to sell your uploaded photos Posted: 11 May 2011 07:24 AM PDT
Greedy Twitpic move serves-up the best reason for switching to yfrog yet. Smartphone photo uploading service Twitpic has altered its terms and conditions in order to sell-on any of the photos you take to third party news agencies.
The incredibly cheeky move will see uploaders retain the copyright to their pictures, while agreeing to license it to Twitpic so that the company can flog it on to newspapers, websites and magazines. Naturally, we get diddly squat.
Now, every time you upload a photo through the service, you agree to these new T&Cs. So, if you get a once-in-a-lifetime shot of David Beckham strolling through the park with a belly button piercing on show, Twitpic will sell that on through news agency WENN and those guys will make a massive wedge out of your handy work.
Our advice? If you get a good celeb photo, give your local news agency a call before you upload it to Twitter, they'll pay you cold hard cash for your tremendous find and then probably sell it on to the nationals for ten times that amount.
Twitpic, blatantly looking for an excuse to justify this blatant exploitation of the pap skills of its users, says the move has been made to "protect your content from organisations who have in the past taken content without permission.
"As recently as last month," the statement continues, "a Twitpic user uploaded newsworthy images of an incident on a plane, and many commercial entities took the image from Twitpic and used it without the user's permission."
Thanks for nothing, guys. Time to give yfrog a try.

BlackBerry Touch 9860 photos leak ahead of unveiling Posted: 11 May 2011 07:12 AM PDT
BlackBerry handset snapped ahead of official announcement The main omission from RIM’s BlackBerry World unveilings, the repeatedly leaked BlackBerry Touch 9860 has appeared in the wild once again with close up spy shots of the device hitting the internet.
Having leaked a number of times earlier in the year, BlackBerry’s mooted Touch 9860 is a reported follow up to the Storm devices said to boast a 1.2GHz processor, 3.7-inch 800 x 400p display and 768MB of RAM.
Another notable insight made apparent by the latest leaks is the omission of the green and red hued End and Send buttons with the 9860, a device expected to land with BlackBerry OS 7, instead seemingly opting for a monochrome interface.
Will we see the BlackBerry Touch 9860 made official before the end of the month or could we be in for a hefty wait interspersed by numerous leaks? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Facebook leaks millions of users' personal data Posted: 11 May 2011 06:13 AM PDT
Apparent loophole in security of world's biggest social networking site Facebook's 500 million users could have had their personal data leaked to third-party internet companies, computer security specialist Symantec has warned today.
Profile information, photographs and chat logs of more than 500 million people who use the social networking website have been potentially leaked over a number of years, due to a loophole in the programming code used by third party Facebook application developers.
Users of Facebook applications, 20m of which are reportedly installed each day, typically grant the programs access to post notifications on their profile and interact with their friends, whilst also allowing access to other data. The problem is that applications may have been passing on this information, with Symantec reporting in a blog that 'hundreds of thousands of applications may have inadvertently leaked millions of access tokens to third parties like advertisers or analytic platforms.'
You won't be surprised to find out that Facebook has played down Symantec’s findings, with security spokesperson Malorie Lucich stating the 'report has a few inaccuracies'. Refuting the security company's blog post, Facebook said: 'We have conducted a thorough investigation which revealed no evidence of this issue resulting in a user's private information being shared with unauthorized third parties.'
The spokesperson for the social networking site was also quick to point out the contractual obligations of advertisers and developers which prohibit them from taking or sharing user information in a way that 'violates our policies'. However, it appears the company did identify an issue, as it has updated the Application Programming Interface referred to by Symantec.
The embarrassing news appears a week after Wikileaks founder Julian Assange claimed Facebook was 'an appalling spying machine'. It also comes as Sony continues to grapple with security issues on the Playstation Network, following an attack in which personal details of 100 million users were stolen.
Are you worried about you personal infromation being stolen? Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook.

Samsung promises faster Galaxy range Android updates Posted: 11 May 2011 04:51 AM PDT
Users of the Galaxy S rejoice! Those delays in getting the latest Android updates are a thing of the past
Speaking to gadget site TechRadar, Simon Stanford, the Korean firm's UK and Ireland MD, has said that Samsung are looking to change their snail pace reputation following the release of the Galaxy S2 device.
Previously, the company has blamed long delays on the process of making sure that updates work correctly on the Galaxy device. But with improvements in Android software construction, Samsung are confident that users of it's smartphones will not have to face a wait again, and could potentially be in line for automatic updates in the future.
"A lot of challenges lay [in networks releasing updates], but we're pretty confident now that the learning’s from the Galaxy S will not occur in Galaxy S2; we're pretty sure consumers will get a great experience when they come to upgrade thesoftware.
"From what I can understand it is getting easier to update the OS, as I said it should be automatic, and users shouldn't have to go and 'seek it'.
Stanford was also keen to point out that Samsung wouldn't forget about Galaxy S handset users, with the company promising to keep user's updated. "As a manufacturer we would previously release a phone and walk away, that was all we ever had to do. Now that's not the case as we keep customers for two years, constantly send them updates or the latest OS, so the challenge is working with operators to make sure we get the correct info out to customers."
The Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone was launched at the start of this month, and has apparently sold 3 million pre-order units already. Do you think Samsung can keep it's promise? Let us know on Twitter and Facebook.

New iPod nano: new leak shows camera Posted: 11 May 2011 03:05 AM PDT
Spy shot suggests nano will go clipless when revealed at annual event in September. The iPod nano is in line for yet another major change, with a new model packing a camera. A new spy shot appears to show the dinky PMP with a snapper round the back, in place of the clip found on the current model.
Chatter about a camera returning to the iPod nano has been rife in recent months, but this is the first time a decent spy shot of the updated device has been seen. It seems Apple is content to ditch the clip, a feature that it made a big deal of last year when it first showed off its then new model.
The camera is said to be just 1.3 megapixels, meaning stills will hardly be up to snuff. Word is that it’ll actually only shoot video, just like the 2009 iPod nano. How shots will look on that tiny screen remains to be seen.
Is Apple tinkering with the nano too much? Or are you happy to see a camera back on the agenda? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Use Android phones and tablets to control lights, appliances and scan CDs. Google I/O has seen some serious advances with both Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Android Market Movies leading the line. But the Big G has also used the San Francisco event to tout Android@Home, a new framework that will let the OS control everything from light switches to home cinema systems.
Google used a demo to show off an Android tablet switching on house lights, using special bulbs designed by Lighting Science. These are expected to hit shelves later this year.
But it’s the more futuristic stuff that’s really got us het up. Google touted “Project Tungsten”, an amped up Apple AirPlay rival that can not only control and stream to compatible music and home cinema kit, but also scan and play CDs via NFC tech.
Devs are set to get cracking on implementing this exciting future tech imminently, but there’s no news on when we’ll be seeing more extreme interpretations of Android@Home sitting pretty on smartphones and tablets. Either way, this proves that right now, the Big G has the edge on Apple in terms of futuristic mobile tech. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Android Ice Cream Sandwich pegged for late 2011 Posted: 10 May 2011 11:31 PM PDT
New version of Android will work across both smartphones and tablets. Google has come clean about its plans for Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the next iteration of its open-source operating system. The software update will be out in Q4 of this year and will work across both smartphones and tablets.
The UI is set to take its lead from the ‘holographic’ design currently found on the tablet-centric Honeycomb, while the OS will offer face detection, aimed at making video calls clearer.
Android phones will also be able to act as USB hubs, so users will be able to hook up external devices such as mice and keyboards to slates and smartphones. Chuck in resizable widgets and new guidelines which will ensure Android phones can be updated to the latest software for at least 18 months after their initial release, and you’re looking at a seriously worthwhile software boost.
While Google is yet to give Ice Cream Sandwich a codename, word on the web is that it’ll be dubbed Android 3.1. Whatever it is, expect it to hit the Nexus S first from October onwards. Excited?
