Windows Phone 7 Mango update to launch in autumn Posted: 24 May 2011 08:56 AM PDT
Windows Phone 7 software update to add multi-tasking and IE9 in autumn Microsoft has unveiled its plans for the next update to its Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system with the Mango refresh set to bring multitasking and more than 500 other new features to handsets this autumn.
Whilst a definitive release date has yet to be decided upon, Microsoft announced that the Mango update would not touch down until autumn this year. Interestingly, however, the tech giant revealed the launch of the OS update would also see the arrival of the first Nokia Windows Phone 7 devices.
With much of the update’s focus being targeted towards the improvement of communication, apps and web aspects of the Phone 7 OS, Berg declared the Mango software will make Windows Phone 7 “smarter and easier” to use.
Web improvements will see Windows Phone 7 handsets sporting Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 browser. Speaking on the IE9 inclusion Berg said: “It will not be similar to that on the PC, it will be exactly the same.”
One of the most key of the updates more than 500 new features will be the inclusion of multi-tasking allowing users to seamlessly switch between open applications without reducing the speed of the handset with a number of programmes running in the background.
Other new features of note include the Groups hub that will allow users to group contacts as well as Threads that will link all person-to-person communication across all mediums into one seamless stream.
“Seven months ago we started our mission to make smartphones smarter and easier for people to do more,” said Andy Lees, President of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft. “With Mango, Windows Phone takes a major step forward in redefining how people communicate and use apps and the Internet, giving you better results with less effort.”

Twitter buys TweetDeck in multi-million pound deal Posted: 24 May 2011 07:41 AM PDT
The microblogging site seizes another third-party app According to sources close to the deal, Twitter has purchased TweetDeck, an application for the microblogging site, in a deal believed to be worth $40million.
The deal is set to extinguish the battle being fought by UberMedia and Twitter, which saw the latter attempt to purchase TweetDeck.
Twitter attempted to outbid UberMedia’s bid of $30million, with a conclusion in the clash likely to be confirmed later today.
There has be no word from the two companies involved with Twitter offering a philosophical approach tweeting: “For all those who might be curious, we continue to not comment on rumours”.
This isn’t the first time Twitter has picked up a third-party app. Last year it bought the iPhone app Tweetie, and along with the photo add-on TwitPic.

iPhone 5 to feature 'smaller and thinner' form factor Posted: 24 May 2011 03:39 AM PDT
"Smaller and thinner" iPhone 5 to host new smaller SIM card The Apple iPhone 5 is to land with a “smaller and thinner” form factor and a SIM card that is even smaller than the micro-SIM found in the iPhone 4 Stephane Richard, CEO of France Telecom has revealed.
Richard, the head of France Telecom, the company that owns network provider Orange, leaked the information on the upcoming iPhone 5 in an interview with tech blog All Things D stating that retailers and networks have worked closely with Apple to develop the new smaller SIM card.
"All of us told them it was a bad idea because the SIM card is a critical piece of the security and authentication process," announced Ricard on his companies objections to Apple’s plan of introducing an E-SIM to the iPhone 5.
"This is good evidence we can work properly with Apple people, Apple teams. In that particular case, we have been able to find, I think, a good answer which is good for everyone."
With Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference set to kick off on June 6th, tradition and the company’s rigid annual product cycles would suggest Apple is to unveil the iPhone 5 within a matter of weeks despite numerous rumours suggesting the handset has been delayed until September.
What features would you like to see in the next rendition of Apple’s iPhone device? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

New MeeGo tablet partners announced Posted: 24 May 2011 03:02 AM PDT
Former Nokia smartphone and tablet OS struggles for recognition. MeeGo, the smartphone and tablet OS Nokia ditched in favour of Windows Phone 7, is set to be the basis for a new tablet operating system in China. The OS, built by Red Flag Software, will use MeeGo version 1.2, the company building its own user experience on top.
The deal, revealed at a MeeGo conference in San Francisco, will give Intel, the OS’s main backer, hope that it can break into he lucrative Chinese market. Sadly, there’s no word on whether any major tech firms are looking to follow Red Flag’s suit and get involved with MeeGo.
Intel remains bullish, saying in a statement, "The MeeGo software platform gives developers a faster and easy way to deliver intuitive and compelling user experiences. MeeGo provides a world of opportunities for device manufacturers and operating system vendors alike."
But with Nokia giving the OS the cold shoulder and Android and iOS storming ahead, will MeeGo ever become a big time player? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Sony SmartAR video shows future of augmented reality Posted: 24 May 2011 02:38 AM PDT
Augmented reality gets a little more sophisticated Sony has been busy showing off its new SmartAR technology which could feature in smartphones in the near future.
Taking the notion of augmented reality one step further, users will be able to use their smartphone's camera to view and interact with AR objects through their touchscreen.
The technology works by mapping 3D spaces, where an AR marker can be created. A character or item can then be placed and be manipulated within that 3D space.
Unlike the augmented reality technology currently housed inside the Nintendo 3DS, Sony's approach does not rely as heavily on placing the AR markers which creates the space for the AR object.
While it seems very likely that the technology will be seen in smartphones first, Sony has previously commented on its potential for gaming as well. That could well see it land for the NGP and the Sony S1 and S2 tablets announced earlier this year.
You can watch the SmartAR demonstration video below. Impressed by Sony's new take on augmented reality? Let us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

Toshiba Thrive Android tablet up for pre-order Posted: 23 May 2011 11:52 PM PDT
No word yet on UK release, but Tosh tab promises much. Toshiba’s Android tablet, dubbed the Thrive, has just been slapped with a pre-order price tag by US retailer J&R. The CES-revealed slate is set to cost $450 (£279) for the entry-level 8GB model. A pricier 32GB version has been priced up at $579 (£359).
Those are impressively low considering the Thrive got a warm reception when it was first revealed. It comes with an impressive spec sheet too, packing Android Honeycomb, a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, HDMI support, a 10.1-inch 1280x800 panel and a 5 megapixel camera round the back.
If the prices do translate across the Atlantic, it’ll make the Thrive much cheaper than the Motorola Xoom and LG Optimus Pad, both of which have been criticised for being prohibitively expensive. The Xoom costs £499 for the basic model, while LG’s tab has been rumoured to costs as much as £699.

Foursquare home screen heading to INQ phones Posted: 23 May 2011 11:26 PM PDT
Easy access recommendations delivered straight to INQ phones' home screens. Foursquare and INQ have inked a deal which will see the latter’s Android phones get a dedicated home screen for the location aware social service. Owners of phones including the INQ Cloud Touch will be able to swipe their blowers and get realtime Foursquare info on-the-go.
Based on previous check-ins, current location and check-ins by your pals, the Foursquare home screen will deliver live recommendations on where to eat, where to hang out and where to shop.
If you’re not a member of Foursquare, fear not. INQ says it’s got that one covered. CEO Frank Meehan said, “We’re looking to make it really easy for a consumer to discover and sign up to foursquare itself, via the start-up sequence. Then we’re taking foursquare’s great knowledge of the world around you and visualising that on your home screen, enabling you to explore events, restaurants, clubs and even bookmark places in a to-do list.”
This is a really smart move by INQ, once again showing why its phones are the way to for social media savvy punters. Tell us what you think of the deal on our Facebook and Twitter pages now. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
