News@8pm: Samsung Series 5 Chromebook and HTC prices Posted: 12 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. There were two pre-order announcements today for HTC products, with the Taiwanese company putting a price tag of £499.99 on the HTC Sensation smartphone and £480 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only version of the HTC Flyer tablet. For a company taking aim at Apple's market share, we think these prices seem a little on the heavy side. Expect the Flyer to hit shelves on 1 June and the Sensation following later that month on 30 June.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Samsung has confirmed reports that the company will release a Near Field Communication (NFC) version of it's iPhone rivalling Galaxy S II device. The technology will allow users to pay for goods and services using only their phone. We should see the device in shops later this year. Meanwhile, rail operator Chiltern Railway has released an app that allows passengers to pay for their journey in advance and store tickets on their phone. Just don't run out of battery before your ticket is inspected.
Facebook continued its rocky ride in the media spotlight with yet another story being released criticising the company’s actions. The social networking giant has apparently admitted to hiring a PR company to smear its rival Google. The news comes as Samsung releases details about its much-hyped Series 5 Chromebook, the first widely available laptop to use the search engine goliath's Chrome OS. The new netbook killer comes with a seriously impressive spec sheet and promises to rejuvenate the world of pared down lappies.
Sony Ericsson was in the news today with a blurry spy shot appearing of aCyber-shot branded Android handset, suggesting that the tech giant could be set to unveil a new camera focussed smartphone. A Walkman branded Android handset is also tipped to be released later this year. Elsewhere in the company’s smartphone portfolio, the Xperia One appears to be suffering from a lack of interest, with the revelation that each of the classic PSone games available for the device has been downloaded less than 1000 times. The company says it is unconcerned. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Xperia Play PSone titles not selling Posted: 12 May 2011 08:40 AM PDT
Despite lack of interest, the company remains 'unconcerned' and 'very happy' Sony Ericson suffered an embarrassing piece of news today as it emerged that each of the five 'Playstation Classic' games available on the Android Marketplace have been downloaded less than a 1000 times, with one title attracting as little as 50-100 downloads.
The games are playable on the Xperia Play smartphone, released in April and complete with slide out control pad. Destruction Derby is the most popular game, but has still only attracted the interest of 500-1000 gamers. Cool Boarders 2, Jumpin Flash, MediEvil and Syphon Filter are also available on the marketplace, with Crash Bandicoot coming pre installed on the device
Head of market development at the London based company, Dominic Neil-Dwyer, remained calm at the apparent lack of interest in the games.
"I think there's also an awareness thing for people that are getting their hands on the device and where they are choosing to purchase games," he said. "There's only a few, at the minute, PlayStation One titles there, and there's more coming on a regular basis, and there's the whole PlayStation as a content provider exclusive to the device, the story about that, that will emerge and people will see.
"So, there's no concerns, it's a revolutionary device, it's shaking up the market, we're very pleased with it. In terms of getting the PlayStation Certified program out, generally, we're very happy. I think we'll make a full assessment of if it has achieved our expectations fully, further down the line, so we're very happy."
The Xperia Play, available on other UK networks, arrives on O2 in early June after the company delayed launch of the phone in light of unspecified bugs it identified with the hardware.

Android app news: Android market gets a makeover Posted: 12 May 2011 08:21 AM PDT
New trending option gives Android Market a hint of Twitter. Google has given the Android Market webstore a new lick of paint to make it easier for users to find the best apps available for download.
The new iteration of the app portal adds new categories like editors choice, New Top Paid and New Top Free apps, as well as giving the charts a visual makeover.
Another new section is Trending Apps, which showcases applications which are popular on any given day and certainly makes it easier for Android users to access the hottest apps available on the market.
The changes were announced at the I/O conference in San Francisco and are now live on the Android Market webstore homepage.
Earlier in the week, Android phone owners in the US were greeted with the Movies category, which allows movies to be rented from the Android Market straight to a smartphone or tablet.

Facebook hires PR company to smear Google Posted: 12 May 2011 06:55 AM PDT
The gloves are off as the war between the two online giants intensifies....
The Daily Beast said the social networking site had hired PR specialists Burson-Marsteller to dig up negative stories about the search giant and highlight them to US media outlets.
The news comes after the PR company approached respected security blogger Christopher Soghoian, urging him to investigate Google’s privacy policy in exchange for getting him published on influential sites such as The Huffington Post and The Washington Post.
The blogger was even reportedly offered assistance in writing the article, with Burson-Marsteller telling him “The American people must be made aware of the now immediate intrusions into their deeply personal lives Google is cataloguing and broadcasting every minute of every day—without their permission.”
Soghoian refused, and posted the emails online highlighting the smear campaign. USA Today then published a piece accusing the PR firm of spreading a “whisper campaign” about Google for an unknown client.
It appears that this client is no longer unknown, with The Daily Beast purporting to have evidence that Facebook was behind the smears: “Confronted with evidence, a Facebook spokesman last night [yesterday] confirmed that Facebook hired Burson, citing two reasons: First, because it believes Google is doing some things in social networking that raise privacy concerns; second, and perhaps more important, because Facebook resents Google’s attempts to use Facebook data in its own social-networking service.
The rivalry between the two online giants is no secret, with Facebook continuing to expand and chip away at Google's advertising revenue. The search giant however is fighting back, and is rumoured to be working on a new kind of social network, Google Circles, which could replace the relatively unsuccessful Google Buzz. Expect more handbags at dawn as the rivalry heats up.

Samsung confirms NFC enabled Galaxy S II Posted: 12 May 2011 05:02 AM PDT
The days of carrying a wallet or purse may soon be numbered... Samsung has confirmed reports that a Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled version of it's Galaxy S II handset will be released later this year.
Speaking today, the Korean company gave the official nod to the handset, which will feature the ability to pay for goods and services on the move.
"Samsung Mobile UK can confirm an NFC version of the Galaxy S II will be launch later this year, to support the roll out of our network partners' NFC services." said a representative from the company’s head office.
Despite this confirmation, it appears we're still in the dark as to when the phone will be released, but all things point to a launch date coinciding with NFC services rolling out across the country later in the year.
There's also no news on whether or not Samsung will put a premium on the cost of the handset for the NFC technology, with the current incarnation of the Galaxy S II already carrying a top end £500 handset price.
Would NFC make you ditch your wallet? Let us know on Twitter and Facebook.

Virgin Media offer new 500GB TiVo Posted: 12 May 2011 04:18 AM PDT
TiVo on diet released to tempt existing customers Virgin Media has begun to offer a 500GB TiVo box to existing customers of it's TV service.
Up until now, the highly acclaimed TiVo box has only been available with a monster 1TB hard drive and an equally hefty upgrade price of £149.95. The smaller 500GB box however will be offered at a rather more tempting price of £49.95 plus installation, whilst still packing a punch with the ability to store around 500 hours of standard TV or up to 100 hours of HD TV.
As of this week, existing customers will be able to get their hands on the new lightweight TV recorder, but will have to dig a bit deeper in their pockets for the privilege. XL TV customers can get the TiVo offering for an additional £3 per month whilst M+ and L TV customers will have to fork out an additional £8 per month.
Unfortunately, the new slimmed down TiVo is not available to new customers...yet. But Virgin has promised to make the 500GB wallet friendly box available to everyone this summer.
Virgin TiVo came in at 39 on T3's Hot 100 list. You can read the review of the 1TB box here.

Google Chrome OS not for tablets Posted: 12 May 2011 03:33 AM PDT
Google confirms Chrome for laptops, Android for tablets. Google confirmed on the second day of its I/O 2011 Conference that it will not be putting Chrome OS on tablets, instead staying firmly rooted in the laptop/netbook community.
Chrome's VP was clear to state that despite its low requirements on power and ease of use, the operating system will be staying with latpops and netbooks, with all their efforts instead focused on improving the users experience of these products.
While these words from Chrome VP Sundar Pichai are nothing short of a concrete statement, it can be some consolation that Android's next incarnation Ice Cream Sandwich is just around the corner.
Will you be going with Google's latest OS or heading the way of the tablet with Android? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.

Chiltern railways creates paperless ticket app Posted: 12 May 2011 03:18 AM PDT
RIP paper tickets and long station queues thanks to new App
Those days of having to wait around in long queues at stations to buy fiddly paper tickets are a thing of the past, with train users now able to buy their tickets in advance thanks to the app and use a QR code on the screen of their device to get through ticket barriers.
The news will be seen as another step towards Near Field Communication (NFC), with the first phones incorporating the technology to pay for goods and services on the move being released later this year.
The good news is that Chiltern Railways app isn't just for those with all-singing all -dancing smartphones, and is compatible with iOS devices, BlackBerry, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung java-based handsets with colour screens. An Android version is also in the works.
At present the app is fairly limited in its operation with the train line only running between London Marylebone and the Midlands. In the future however it may roll out to other train operators, making all those pesky paper tickets a thing of the past.

Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot Android phone incoming? Posted: 12 May 2011 03:07 AM PDT
New SE phone will follow Walkman-branded Android handset. Sony Ericsson’s already touted a Walkman branded Android handset this year and has brought PlayStation to mobile with the Xperia Play. And now it’s working on a Cyber-shot Android phone to complete the package.
The new blower is the subject of a blurry spy shot, which appears to show the Cyber-shot logo down at the bottom. There’s no word on what we can expect under the hood, apart from Android of course, but this could be a promising addition to the SE stable.
That said, with cameras on most top-end phones able to take killer snaps, do we really want or need a phone focused solely around the camera? After all, smartphones are supposed to be able to do everything well, not just one thing.
Would you buy a Cyber-shot phone? Or is this harking back to mobile days that are long gone? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nintendo 3DS web update delayed Posted: 12 May 2011 02:47 AM PDT
Nintendo's 3DS update has been delayed with an expected arrival of June With CVG revealing that the latest 3DS update will be delayed until June, it's now been brought to light that the update will contain not only a web browser but also a virtual console and all the other benefits that come with DSiware.
The virtual console is certainly an exciting prospect with customers being able to download back titles of older Nintendo classics while the library of DSiware applications will definitely give the handheld more oomph.
What's most alluring however is the prospect of 3D browsing, while admittedly the screen isn't exactly mammoth sized (for obvious reasons) the idea of surfing the web in 3D sounds more than appealing.
Of course while Nintendo hasn't revealed whether any of the non-3DS content will in fact be in 3D we can see no reason why it shouldn't.
Will this update be the decider in spending your hard earned coinage on the 3D handheld? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

HTC Flyer now available for preorder Posted: 12 May 2011 02:44 AM PDT
Another tablet arrives to take on the might of Apple. But have HTC overpriced the HTC Flyer?
The premium price points will surprise many who have been touting the Taiwanese company's first tablet venture as a possible rival to Apples' mighty iPad.
One of the major selling points to the Flyer is the much touted 'magic pen', allowing users to scribble notes, sketch on the screen, and mark up web pages. However, in a surprising move by HTC it was announced last week that this will be released as an additional accessory, with a wallet busting price tag of £47.99 in addition to the cost of the tablet.
The Flyer will also be released with Android Gingerbread OS, making it already look slightly dated to the new and soon to be arriving Honeycomb devices hitting the market. No doubt HTC will be looking to update this in the future.
At £480 for a 16GB wifi only device, plus the price of the stylus, the HTC Flyer looks a tad expensive, with potential customers able to pick up the 32GB wifi version of the iPad 2 for equivalent money, featuring a 10 inch screen as against the Flyer's 7inch.
Will this price put you off buying HTC's first tablet offering? Let us know on Twitter and Facebook. Via: TechWatch This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
iPhone and iPad shortages could hit Apple targets Posted: 12 May 2011 02:14 AM PDT
Sources say Apple might not make ambitious targets for second quarter of 2011. Apple is set to miss its ambitious targets of selling 7.5 million iPads and 20 million iPhones in the second quarter of 2011. That’s according to sources close to component suppliers in the Far East, who say the Japanese earthquake is to blame for the shortfall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apple iPad 2 video
Word is that Foxconn, the company that assemble iPads and iPhone for Apple, is facing a lack of essential parts for the iPad 2, as Japanese industry struggles to get back on its feet and ship components over to China for assembly.
Apple is said to be looking at a similar problem with the iPhone. Foxconn said it was doing, “…all it can,” to satisfy demand. The iPad 2 struggled in its first month on shelves, thanks to extreme demand. Apple said last month it was selling every tablet it could make and as trying hard to keep up.

HTC Sensation slapped with £499 price tag Posted: 12 May 2011 01:12 AM PDT
Phone due out on 30 June, but expect networks to detail generous plans before then. Play.com has given the HTC Sensation a weighty £499.99 pre-order price tag. The online retailer says if you slap down the cash now for the Taiwanese mobile maker’s latest, greatest Android phone, you’ll have it by 30 June. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those at the back the HTC Sensation was revealed back in April and comes with some seriously smart features. We’re talking a dual-core processor, 1080p HD video recording, a massive 4.3-inch Gorilla Glass screen and an 8 megapixel snapper round the back.
It’s perhaps no surprise that the SIM-free price is so high. But you can expect the networks to chip in with their own subsidised offers. Don’t be surprised to see this number going free on contract very soon.

Major specification update, but reduction in body size
Panasonic has announced a new addition to its Lumix range, the Lumix G3 sits under the GH2 in the interchangeable lens camera range.
Billed as the smallest compact system camera with an electronic viewfinder, the Japanese manufacturer says the camera is a ‘comprehensive overhaul, not just a tweak.’
Check out our hands-on Panasonic G3 pictures here
Panasonic Lumix G3 specs include a 25% smaller than then G2 and new 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor, with improved low-light performance even at higher ISO levels. While the Venus Engine VI FHD sensor with Intelligent D-range Control and Advanced Intelligent Resolution for natural colours and exposures.
The 3-inch LCD is free angle, rotating 270-degrees up and down and 180-degrees left and right. Full Area Focusing means you can touch the frame at any point to focus and take a picture.
Other improvements include a 0.1 autofocus system, new Pinpoint AF system and Manual AF system.
Panasonic has boosted the video resolution from 720p in the G2 to full HD 1920x1080. By using the AVCHD fit twice as much footage fits on a memory card in comparison to Motion Jpeg.
T3 was lucky enough to have some hands-on time with the G3 earlier this week and first impressions are impressive. It's compact and comfortable to use and the autofocus seems quick. We'll bring you a full review over the next few days.

Music labels pinning hopes on Apple streaming, say sources Posted: 11 May 2011 11:59 PM PDT
Big four said to be desperate for Apple to reveal its music streaming plans soon. The big four music labels are hoping that the launch of Apple’s much-mooted music streaming service will help bring Amazon and Google onside. Currently the latter pair do not have licensing agreements for their music streaming services, instead simply letting users store and play their own tunes in the cloud.
Word from music industry sources speaking to Cnet, is that label bosses are hoping an Apple streaming package will push Google and Amazon into agreeing licensing deals so they can improve their services to compete with Cupertino. Apple has apparently already got two of the four majors signed up for its as-yet-unannounced offering.
Yesterday, Google criticised the majors, with Google’s Jamie Rosenberg telling All Things D, “Unfortunately, a couple of the major labels were less focused on the innovative vision that we put forward, and more interested in an unreasonable and unsustainable set of business terms.”
Such comments suggest Google is happy to leave the labels out of this. How they’ll feel when Apple arrives on the scene, with something rumoured to be more akin to Spotify, remains to be seen. If Apple offers something killer, sources said they hoped Amazon and Google would sign on their terms.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook official Posted: 11 May 2011 11:36 PM PDT
Speedy start-up, top-end specs and recession-friendly price tag. Samsung has just come clean about its much-hyped Series 5 Chromebook, the first widely available laptop to use the Big G’s Chrome OS. The new netbook killer comes with a seriously impressive spec sheet and promises to rejuvenate the world of pared down lappies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rocking Intel’s latest dual-core Atom processor, the N570, the Series 5 should tick along nicely. That chipset will be aided by an impressive 2GB of RAM with a 16GB SSD for stashing files. That might seem small by comparison to current netbooks, but remember, Chrome OS is all about cloud computing. Google Docs, Gmail and Google Music all have a big role to play here.
Connectivity is impressive for such a small machine, with two USB ports, a 4-in-1 card reader, Wi-Fi and 3G on certain models. Sammy says the battery will kick it for five hours while watching video before it needs juicing up, lasting up to 1,000 charging cycles.
The screen measures 12.1-inches, with an impressive 1280x800 resolution. It tips the scales at 1.45kg, is a mere 20mm thin and boots up in 10 seconds. But the best bit? It costs just £349 for a Wi-Fi-only model and £399 for one toting 3G, when it hits the shelves on 24 June.
