L.A Noire has topped the gaming charts after just four days with Rockstar’s latest blockbuster likely to become the most successful game of the year, so far. One game that may prevent L.A Noire from being the game of the year is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 set for release November 8th, which has been subject to a price bidding war already, but you knew that was coming...

An Apple patent has revealed that future iPhone models will include a privacy aid, which will see the screen blacked out at various angles. The next Apple instalment could sport a Nano-style curved screen according to latest reports, although the mooted iPhone may be delayed until September with a 64GB iPhone 4 supposedly Apple’s next offering in the smartphone market.

Google’s Social Search has expanded as it can now facilitate 19 languages, with improved “friend” relevance to your searches.

Amazon tablet release to see 10-inch LCD display inclusion

Posted: 23 May 2011 09:21 AM PDT

Amazon to follow Kindle success with 10-inch LCD tablet

Amazon’s widely expected and heavily rumoured upcoming tablet release will see the retail giant launch an iPad rival with a 10-inch LCD display, new reports have suggested.

Whilst Amazon is reported to be one of the many companies pioneering screen technology that would allow users to seamlessly switch between E-ink style and full colour LCD displays, such technologies are still believed to be a number of years off commercial inclusion.

As such Amazon has reportedly plumped for a 10-inch LCD display for its inaugural tablet device with a smaller 7-inch model expected to follow suit. As well as sporting a hefty 10-inch LCD screen, the Amazon tablet is said to be lining up the inclusion of an Nvidia Tegra quad-core CPU in order to surpass Apple’s iPad 2 in processing power.

Looking to succeed where all other Android tablet’s have failed and truly challenge the market dominance of Apple’s iPad and iPad 2 devices, Amazon is expected to fill its first tablet with Google’s Android 3.1 OS in time for a pre-Christmas rush release.

Can Amazon be the first to give Apple and the iPad a run for its tablet market money? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

LA Noire tops UK gaming charts in opening week

Posted: 23 May 2011 08:51 AM PDT

LA Noire matches success of Red Dead Redemption

Rockstar’s LA Noire gaming release has gone straight in at number in the official UK game chart, following strong sales during its opening weekend.

The cinematic 1940s detective thriller game has matched the sales of Rockstar’s last blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption in its first few days on sale catapulting it to the top of the gaming charts.

Last week’s number one, Bethesda’s Brink, slipped to number three, while Lego Pirates of the Caribbean continued to sell strongly and hold number two in the all format charts.

At number four, Zumba Fitness is also still performing nicely, followed by another new entry in the top ten, Namco Bandai’s The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Crysis 2 leapt back up to number six, and Portal 2 slid to number seven, followed by FIFA 11. Mortal Kombat and CoD: Black Ops completed the top ten, placed 9th and 10th respectively.

Apple to launch 64GB iPhone 4 before iPhone 5 lands?

Posted: 23 May 2011 08:24 AM PDT

Apple iPhone 4 to be given 64GB storage update

Apple could be preparing a curveball with a leaked memo suggesting a 64GB iPhone 4 is just a matter of weeks away from launch, seemingly scuppering the expected arrival of the much mooted iPhone 5.

Following the leak of a 64GB iPhone 4 prototype earlier this year an internal memo from a third party handset retailer in the US has seemingly outed the release of a 64GB iPhone 4 with the increased storage handset to be exclusively to the heavily delayed but recently released white model.

The memo, which contains the phrase “Only the White iPhone 4 (32 and 64gb), appears to hint at a surprise revamp to the iPhone 4 ahead of the expected iPhone 5 arrival.

Widely expected to follow Apple’s rigid annual product cycles and launch at WWDC on June 6th, the iPhone 5, tipped to feature a dual-core processor and iOS 5, has been repeatedly rumoured as facing delays that would see it held back until September.

Will we see a 64GB iPhone 4 or is Apple holding the larger storage capabilities for the iPhone 5? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung TV Apps top the 5 million downloads mark

Posted: 23 May 2011 07:16 AM PDT

Samsung Smart TV app service passes 5 million download milestone

Samsung’s Smart TV App service has surpassed the 5 million download milestone as Video Apps such as YouTube remain the most popular offerings.

With 550 Samsung Apps for the company’s range of Smart TVs currently available, the Korean tech behemoth has announced more than 5 million Smart TV apps have been downloaded since the service officially launched some 14 months ago.

YouTube has been revealed as the most frequently downloaded application topping the charts in the US, UK and numerous other countries.

“It’s no surprise that these applications would be at the top of the lists globally and regionally,” said Kang-hyun Kwon, Senior Vice President, Media Solution Center, Samsung Electronics.  “The TV is a family-based device and people want to lean back and enjoy their time in front of the TV. These apps are the entry point for consumers to discover other experiences on their TV like gaming and social networking as well as the limitless possibilities being created by our third-party developers.”

Having taken 11 months to reach 2 million app downloads in January of this year, Samsung has revealed four months later that an additional 3 million downloads have taken the service to its latest milestone. Now available in 120 nations Samsung Apps now sees more than 100,000 applications downloaded every four days.

“The success of our developers and the rate at which our downloads have increased are evidence that this new medium of apps designed specifically for the television experience is taking hold in the consumer living room,” said. Kevin Kyungshik Lee, Vice President, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics,  “These apps are one of the cornerstones of the overall Smart TV experience and they will continue to grow both in number and the diversity of experiences.”

Sony to 'remaster' PSP games for the PlayStation 3

Posted: 23 May 2011 06:45 AM PDT

PSP titles undergo a "remastering" for HD gaming

Sony has announced it is working on the development of crossover gaming between its PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 consoles for select titles.

The scheme, astutely named the “PlayStation Portable Remaster Series”, features online gaming, control pad support and the ability to transfer saved game data between the handheld and home console.

With Sony attempting to re-build faith in the PlayStation Network, after numerous security breaches, the tech giant will be hoping to once again find its feet and evolve the gaming industry.

The selected PSP titles will be available in full HD and will include new bonus content. Looking to capitalise on the scheme, Sony will force owners of the existing PSP titles to repurchase the games if they want to play them on the PS3.

Monster Hunter Freedom 3 is the only title, as of yet, to get the overhaul, with the game set to launch in Japan over the summer. Future titles have yet to be unveiled by Sony.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 price: Retailers slash prices

Posted: 23 May 2011 06:19 AM PDT

Modern Warfare 3 price wars kick into action

With six months still to go until it hits stores, price wars for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 have already kicked off with supermarket giant Sainsbury’s now offering the release for a pre-order price of £36.

Hitting pre-order earlier this month, a number of key online retailers are now offering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ahead of its launch on November 8th with leaks of the game’s storyline having already outed the fact that levels will take place in New York, London, Berlin and Paris.

With Xbox 360 and PS3 releases of Modern Warfare 3 touting a £54.99 RRP, retailers have already begun undercutting each other in an attempt to attract the largest pre-order numbers. Whilst Amazon.co.uk has Modern Warfare 3 available priced at £42.91, GAME is offering the release for £39.99.

Offering a 20 per cent discount to its first 500 pre-orders retailer Sainsbury’s is offering the upcoming addition to the Call of Duty franchise for just £36. Prices and deals for what will arguably be the biggest game of the year are expected to drop in the coming months ahead of the title’s formal pre-Christmas release.

Have you already snapped up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or will you be waiting until the game lands in November to snap it up? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Microsoft to end Windows Mobile 6 support on July 15th

Posted: 23 May 2011 04:37 AM PDT

Windows 7 priortised as it supersedes Mobile 6.x

The end is nigh for Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.x OS as the software behemoth continues to reduce its signifiance in the mobile market with support of the operating system to cease on July 15th.

After 19 months Windows Mobile 6.x is to be decommissioned following Microsoft's notification to App developers that it would not be accepting any new application submissions for the Marketplace post July 15th.

Original apps will still be available to purchase by end users, but this will signify the end to innovation on the now obsolete platform.

The Marketplace peaked with around 7,000 apps available to download, but that number has plummeted to less than 2,000 to date prompting the end of Windows Mobile 6.x, with the distinct possibility that Windows will no longer support the OS.

Windows Phone 7 is Microsoft’s latest attempt to top the mobile world, and with HTC adopting the interface the computer giants no longer see a need for Mobile 6.

Google's Social Search given global launch

Posted: 23 May 2011 04:27 AM PDT

19 months on, and Google's Social Search tool becomes available in 19 languages.

Google has finally expanded its Social Search tool to a global market, a full 19 months after its first launch.

The Social Search tool, which catalogues search results based on live content streaming through social outlets such as Facebook and Twitter will be available in 19 different languages, increasing its reach across the globe.

Yohann Coppel, a Google software engineer, wrote on the company blog: “In 2009 we first introduced Social Search on google.com as an experimental feature designed to help you find more relevant information from your friends and the people you care about.

“Since then we’ve been making steady improvements to connect you with more people and more relevant web results. Today, we’re bringing Social Search to more users around the globe.”

Social Search was first used in October 2009, including searches linked to a “friend”, with the standard results. Google collaborates your “friends” through tools such as Gmail, Buzz and Google Talk, along with public social networking sites Twitter and Facebook.

The search giant then optimises the results connected to a “friend”, with the link including information about who used the link provided, with the aim of bringing you the best result. The news comes in response to Bing’s announcement of a partnership with Facebook last week, likely to improve Microsoft’s search engine in an attempt to gain a higher market share.

Apple patent reveals Privacy Mode for future displays

Posted: 23 May 2011 03:59 AM PDT

iPhone, iPad and iPod in line for increased screen privacy

Apple has filed a patent that will see the company’s future iPhone, iPod and iPad devices feature a screen privacy option that will allow users to change the angle of the devices’ displays.

Controlling the angel of the display and thus the field of view for those looking at the device’s screen, Apple’s latest patent looks to add increased user privacy to its portable devices with ‘wedge angle’ aspects of the screen’s construct able to ‘steer’ light on request to seamlessly alter the display’s viewing angle.

Allowing only those directly in front of the handset’s screen to see its contents, the patent, if brought to fruition would offer increased privacy, a feature no doubt coveted by many existing iPhone and iPad users who use their current iDevices in public to view sensitive and personal data.

When such features would be brought to Apple’s array of portable iDevices is currently unknown, latest rumours and reports, however, have suggested Apple’s mooted iPhone 5 will land boasting a curved glass display.

Would increased screen privacy be a feature high on your list of iDevice improvement wants? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 release to see handset boast curved display?

Posted: 23 May 2011 03:23 AM PDT

Mooted iPhone 5 to land with newly curved glass screen

Apple’s widely expected iPhone 5 is to launch with a curved-glass display reminiscent of those found on previous iPod Nano incarnations, new reports have claimed.

Reported “industry sources” have told tech blog Digitimes that Apple’s Taiwanese suppliers confirmed Apple’s next-generation iPhone device will sport a curved display as Apple reportedly splashes out on 200-300 specialist glass cutting machines.

Whilst it is unconfirmed exactly how curved the handset’s display will be, any changes to the device’s form factor are expected to be very subtle.

With parts suppliers apparently reluctant to front the bill for the pricy glass cutting machines, Apple is claimed to have taken the leap buying hundreds of the units that are “currently being stored at associated assembly plants and will be brought online once yield rates for the production of curved glass reaches a satisfactory level,” Digitimes’ sources revealed.

Whilst Apple’s annual product cycles would suggested the mooted iPhone 5 will be officially unveiled at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 6th ahead of a release later that month, countless rumours have suggested the handset has been delayed until September with retailer Phones4u last week confirming to T3.com that the iPhone 5 has been delayed until November 21st following an issue with the handset’s software.

Wii 2 controller: camera included

Posted: 23 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT

What exactly has Ninty got planned for its capacious new controller?

Nintendo is planning on loading up its new Wii 2 controller with a camera. That’s according to CrunchGear, which says it has backed up previous chatter about such a snapper thanks to info from a new source.

While details remain sketchy, having a camera on the controller does make sense. With a massive 6-inch screen already widely assumed to be included, a camera could bring added value, with users able to put themselves in the game. It will be front-facing, meaning it could potentially be used for video chat as well.

The Wii 2 is expected to land with Full HD smarts, 3D capability and beefed up graphics. Ninty has confirmed that the device will be out next year, with details expected to be revealed at this year’s E3 gaming powwow, which kicks off on 7 June.

Playboy launch iPad-optimised iPlayboy service

Posted: 23 May 2011 02:51 AM PDT

Uncensored Playboy archive hits Apple's iPad tablet

Classic smut peddler Playboy has launched its iPad optimised website with iPlayboy allowing users to access the full archive of adult magazines for $8 (£4.94) per month.

With Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner repeatedly announcing via Twitter in recent months that the entire Playboy collection would be hitting Apple’s tablet in a “complete and uncensored” form, many assumed that the archive of scantily clad ladies and attention grabbing articles would be made available via an iOS app.

Steve Jobs’ strict no nudity rules for the iOS App Store put an end to such speculation, however, with Playboy eventually opting for a special iPad optimised version of its website instead and ensuring that all aspects of the publication’s infamous images can be shown in all their glory.

As well as the standard $8 per month subscription offering, wannabe users of the iPlayboy service are able to sign up for a one year subscription for $60 (£37) or a two year all-access deal priced at $100 (£61.75). For these fees users will be granted access to 682 issues of Playboy spanning 57 years of iconic adult content.

Will you be signing up to Playboy’s iPlayboy service or sticking with free to view adult content elsewhere? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Holiday 1.2GHz dual-core Android smartphone leaked

Posted: 23 May 2011 02:32 AM PDT

Is this HTC's next flagship phone

HTC’s relentless stream of handsets doesn’t look to end soon, as internet spies at PocketNow have just unearthed this: the HTC Holiday. The phone, aptly rumoured to be released near Christmas, is a real barnstormer if the specs are to be believed.

Its 4.5-inch qHD display hides a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, which 1GB of RAM. That level of processing power puts it at the very top end of the smartphone power league, ensuring that the HTC Holiday wouldn’t struggle to run any apps you throw at it.

The Holiday also boasts an 8-Megapixel camera with flash and Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). It’s scheduled to land on AT&T in the US, but there’s no word yet on whether it’ll hit the UK. Is 4.5-inches too big for a smartphone? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

Sony websites hacked in Greece and Thailand

PlayStation Network woes compounded by fresh Sony hack

The Sony BMG Greece website has become the latest service to be comprimised after reports that users details were posted online.

According to The Hacker News, names and email addresses from users registered to SonyMusic.gr have been uploaded by an anonymous user to site pastebin.com.

A SQL injection tool is said to be the method used to infiltrate the site by identifying flaws across Sony websites.

Additionally, a Sony website in Thailand has also come under attack after users were being directed to a fake website posing as an Italian credit card company, which was actually designed to obtain information about customers.

These latest series of hacking scandals follow on closely from the recent PlayStation Network outage where data from millions of users were stolen, taking down PlayStation-related services for almost 25 days.

Apple Store 2.0 revealed with interactive iPad 2 signage

Posted: 23 May 2011 02:09 AM PDT

iPads take centre stage at revamped stores.

Apple has celebrated the tenth anniversary of its first retail store by giving its shops a fresh new look, putting the iPad front and centre when it comes to getting info on, and buying, any Cupertino-conceived product.

Instead of regular paper signs explaining what any given Apple product does, an iPad is now bolted to the table, loaded up with details, specs and explanations. Punters can swipe through reams of info and even use a dedicated call button to attract the attention of a member of staff.

Other areas of the Apple retail service that have come in for a revamp include the Personal Setup service with all iPad, iPod, iPhone and Mac purchases now coming with a free personalised setup allowing users to leave the store with their device up and running.

Sadly, the anniversary didn’t bring any of the much-mooted price cuts or major new launches which had been rumoured. But at least this way there are more chances for those without an iPad to go and fondle one for a good reason.

Android Movie Rentals blocked on rooted Android kit

Posted: 23 May 2011 01:10 AM PDT

Rules could have wider implications as movie rentals role out on different Android devices.

Google is blocking Android users who have rooted their phones and tablets from renting flicks from the newly-launched Android Movie Store and YouTube rental channel. The Big G says this is down to copyright law.

“Rooting” Android phones is not illegal and has become increasingly popular as hardcore users look to get the latest version of the OS before anyone else. This is the first major instance that Google has attempted to ensure users stick to the official upgrade path.

At the moment, the movie store is only officially available on the Motorola Xoom. But the service is set to roll out on phones and tabs packing Android 2.2 or higher, meaning this rule could affect thousands of users, forcing them to revert to older versions of the OS to rent flicks on-the-go.

Those who do try to snag a film using a rooted device get the message, "Failed to fetch license for [movie title] (error 49)". On an official support page, Google explains that, “You'll receive this "Error 49" message if you attempt to play a movie on a rooted device. Rooted devices are currently unsupported due to requirements related to copyright protection.”

Is Google compromising its “open” credentials with this move? Or have the movie studios got it over a barrel? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Motorola Droid 3 details revealed

Posted: 22 May 2011 11:22 PM PDT

New gossip backs up previous rumours. But when will UK version land?

The Motorola Droid 3 has been the subject of some intense rumour-mongering across the pond. And now even more info about the QWERTY Android powerhouse has leaked out, suggesting it’s not far away from getting the official nod.

A ‘reliable tipster’ has turfed up info which backs up previous claims, supported by pics, that the Droid 3 has a five row QWERTY keyboard, with dedicated numerical keys across the top.

What’s more, it’ll have an eyeball-stroking 4-inch qHD screen, matching its newly announced Droid X2 stablemate and the HTC Sensation. Under the hood it’s expected to have a lightning fast NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, with an 8 megapixel camera round the back.

There’s no word on whether the Droid 3 will be slapped with Milestone moniker and delivered to these shores, as has been the case with both previous iterations of the device. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.

MacBook Air update: new Intel chips primed

Posted: 22 May 2011 11:11 PM PDT

No word on release date, but previous rumours suggest June or July for boost to MacBook Air.

Intel is prepping a new set of Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processors, which some Apple gossip hounds reckon will be ripe to fit inside a new batch of MacBook Airs. The ultra thin laptop has been pegged for an update at some point this summer.

The new ULV chips are part of the so-called Sandy Bridge family, already sitting pretty in the latest MacBook Pros and recently updated iMac. There are three new processors, which will run at up to 1.8GHz.

With previous rumours suggesting the MacBook Air is about to get a boost, surely it’s too much of a coincidence that Intel is working on chipsets especially made for thin and lightweight machines.

It was believed that the chipsets in the MacBook Pro range would make their way to the Air. Now though, it looks like Apple will be getting first dibs on this new Intel tech. Expect to get official details soon, possibly during Apple’s WWDC event at the start of June.
