News@8pm:Galaxy Tab 10.1 white hands on and 3 for Google Chromebooks

Posted: 13 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT

We finally got our hands on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in white today, and are pleased to confirm that with its new slimmer form factor and glossy white back it’s certainly a better looker than the industriously designed predecessor. With a depth that rivals the iPad 2, the Galaxy Tab White Edition is incredibly thin, almost astonishingly at 8.6mm. The tablet comes preloaded with Android Honeycomb 3.0.1 OS and is powered with a NVIDIA Tegra 2 Processor. However, in a surprising move, Samsung has decided to lower the device’s camera quality and put a 3MP rear-facing camera on the tablet. The loss of the 8MP camera follows the unveiling of the product this week at Google's I/O conference.

Evidence continues to point to the new iPod Nano featuring a camera, with a newly unearthed patent suggests a snapper of some kind is almost certainly heading back to the bite sized music player. This news follows a leaked pic of the Californian company's new iPod with a camera on the back earlier this week. In other Apple news, iPad users can now sing to their heart's content with the launch of the Lucky Voice Karaoke app. Users of the device can now make fools of themselves wherever they may roam, with the free app featuring a library of around 8,000 songs that users access via paid for credits.

Samsung and LG are to debut ‘retina displays' for tablets. Both companies have revealed that they will be showcasing 'ultra high resolution' displays at the SID 2011 conference next week, with Samsung revealing that their 300ppi display will be 10.1 inches  across, accomplishing a quite ridiculous resolution of 2,560 x 1,600. Meanwhile, rumours continue to circulate on Amazon's first tablet PC offering. The much-mooted device has moved a step closer to reality today after the online retail giant’s CEO dropped the biggest hint yet about a full-on iPad rival. When asked about such a device, Jeff Bezos told Consumer Reports that punters should ‘stay tuned’ for more news.

Three was all smiles today after the phone network realised two bits of big news. First up, the firm announced that it had bagged rights to sell the Nokia X7 from June. The latest top-end Symbian smartphone wears the latest OS update, dubbed Symbian “Anna”. The second of Three's announcements focused around the new Google Chromebook made by Samsung, with the phone network becoming the Korean company's official ‘3G connectivity partner’. The tie-up means punters will get free SIMs and free 3G data if they snag the newly announced Samsung Series 5 Chromebook.

Weird News: 3D Specs defeat Hitler and pasties fuel cars

Posted: 13 May 2011 08:29 AM PDT

The week's weird and wonderful goings on in the world of tech

3D specs help win World War 2

It was reported today that experts disrupted plans to bomb Britain using 3D glasses like those in modern cinemas. By meticulously photographing the landscape of occupied Europe, officers were able to study every contour using the specs, and provided the RAF with enough information for Operation Crossbow, when it tracked down and destroyed many of the Nazi rockets which could have prolonged the war.

Southpark episode takes aim at Apple data tracking scandal

The always close-to-the-bone cartoon kicked off an unprecedented 15th series with an episode on Apple and its alleged "big brother" tendencies, following the revelation that the Californian company’s products kept a record of the location of users. The episode parodies the 2010 Dutch horror film The Human Centipede, with Steve Jobs deciding to create a new product, the HumancentiPad, a hybrid of the iPhone, iPad and three human beings. Kyle is chosen to take part in the experiment after he carelessly clicks on "I agree" without reading the new iTunes terms and conditions.

Slide to unlock doormat

Apple fans can show their devotion to the Cupertino company thanks to the 'slide to unlock' doormat, constructed from 100% high quality processed coconut fiber and the has a base made of sturdy PVC. Just make sure you wipe your feet in the correct direction if you don't want to cause offence (that’s RIGHT if you’re part of the Android clan).

Hilary Clinton Photoshoped out of picture

Hillary Clinton has been edited out of a photo showing senior White House staff watching live footage of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden by an ultra-Orthodox Jewish newspaper in New York. The newspaper also edited out the only other woman in the room, ignoring a White House disclaimer that "The photograph may not be manipulated in any way."

Robots on display at Shanghai International Conference

It wouldn't be weird news without something on robots, and this week the 'creme de la creme' of our mechanical friends are strutting their stuff in Shanghai at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation. On display were robots that were able to perform range of tasks, from writing calligraphy to serving food.  Chinese engineers also showed off a deep-sea remotely-operated vehicle that could dive into depths of 3,500 metres (11,483 feet) to collect samples and announced plans to use robots to assist in space exploration to Mars.

Cars to run on pasties?

Eco-friendly fuel firm Greenergy have revealed their intentions to make biodiesel using oil extracted from various forms of food waste, such as pasties, crisps and other notoriously oily products that would normally be send to landfill sites. The cooking oil contained within these calorific products can amount to a gut busting 30 percent of the product, which, when mixed with regular diesel fuel, could go someway to powering cars.

Super Mario takes to the ice

Russian duo Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov have won silver at the World Figure Skating Championships with their 'Super Mario Brothers' inspired routine. The competition was originally assigned to Japan but was postponed after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March, one week before the start of the planned tournament.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 loses 8MP camera

Posted: 13 May 2011 07:54 AM PDT

Well something had to go didn't it, and in this case, it was the megapixels.

Samsung has surprised the tech world by deciding to lower the camera quality and put a 3MP rear-facing camera on its update of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. In what is a clear effort to rival Apple's iPad 2 the company unveiled the glossy white tablet this week at Google's I/O conference.

The move has come as somewhat of a suprise considering the original model featured a high-resolution 8MP camera on the back. Despite talking to Samsung they haven't as yet, given us a reason for the downgrade it's a fair guess that it was a victim of the frankly incredible size difference between the two.

With a white glossy back and metal surround the Galaxy Tab 10.1 White Edition is just 8.6mm thick but still manages to feature the same hardware as its larger counterpart the original Galaxy Tab 10.1. With a NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor inside and the choice of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of memory it's certainly a worthy entrant into the tablet elite.

Has Samsung put you off by lowering the camera resolution or does the 8.6mm thickness make up for it? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.

Magellan launch new GPS device range

Posted: 13 May 2011 07:26 AM PDT

Outdoors company Magellan have crammed a ridiculous amount of features into the eXplorist GPS range

Never get lost in the outdoors again with the launch of a range of hand held GPS devices by outdoors company Magellan.

The eXplorist range of products are crammed full of technology to help you find your way in the great outdoors, with the eXplorist 510, 610 and 710 models all featuring high-sensitivity GPS, touchscreen, easy-to-read mapping and accurate navigation.

Each of the devices also feature a 3.2 mega-pixel camera and microphone, allowing you to record images, videos, and voice notes that also note your location, making it easier than ever to record and share your adventure back home. The products come preloaded with Magellan’s World Edition map software, giving you the complete road network for the US, Canada, Western Europe and Australia, as well as water features, urban and rural land use. And if Ordnance Survey mapping is more your bag, the software is downloadable on the company’s website.

In addition, the eXplorist 610 and 710 feature a 3-axis electronic compass and a barometric altimeter to provide you with precise orientation, accurate elevation information, and even weather pattern tracking.

If this isn't enough for you, the eXplorist 710 brings together a complete package of on-road and off-road navigation, with the Taiwanese company cramming into the device their highly detailed Summit Series topographic map and its City Series turn-by-turn software, meaning you can leave the TomTom at home and use the 710 to get to your outdoor destination.

For those who like to combine games into their outdoor pursuits, the eXplorist GC is aimed those who take part in geocaching, a high-tech treasure hunt using GPS technology to hide and find physical objects and solve location-based puzzles. Think Crystal Maze in the Lake District.

Magellan has also released a special ToughCase that 'outdoor proofs' your iPhone and iPod touch. The rock hard protective cases double the battery life of your treasured Apple product whilst increasing its GPS signal, and allow it to survive half an hour under a metre of water- plenty of time to fish it out of that lake you dropped it in whilst fishing, or that clumsy lunchtime pint.

The Magellan eXplorist range starts at £179.99, with the 710 model costing £499.99 and the toughcase costing £179.99.

Have the Taiwanese company created the best outdoor survival gadget ever? Let us know on Twitter and Facebook.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 White: First Impressions

Posted: 13 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Super slim and super desirable but marred by the drop in camera resolution

Samsung unveiled its latest incarnation of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 at the Google I/O conference. With a slimmer form factor and glossy white back it’s certainly a change from the industrious looking original and T3 was lucky enough to get its hands on one. Here’s our first impressions:

With a depth that can rival the iPad 2 the Galaxy Tab White Edition is incredibly thin, almost astonishingly thin at 8.6mm, and with the metal accents and glossy white back it definitely implies a build quality which could rival Apple’s latest offering.

Going into the tablet itself the hardware appears to be similar in terms of power and storage NVIDIA Tegra 2 Processor, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB storage being on offer and both a rear and front facing camera.

This however leads us on to the one negative point. Samsung has confirmed that the new White Edition has lost the 8 Megapixel snapper from its larger sibling instead opting for a much smaller 3.2 MP snapper on the back and a 2 MP snapper on the front. It does however still record 720p HD video, although with such a small sensor expect the quality to be lower than on the previous model.

Under the hood you’ll find the latest incarnation of Android’s tablet OS Honeycomb 3.0.1 which offers the same 3D styled user-interface and full Flash compatibility. As with the previous Galaxy Tab 10.1 using the OS is a joy, with only the occasional glitch giving you grief. As a web browser it’s lightning fast, optimising the page for the tablet’s gargantuan screen. In a quick speed test we found the Galaxy Tab 10.1 White was as quick, if not quicker than the iPad 2 in loading T3.com.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 White Edition: Early verdict

Coming just a few weeks after the release of the iPad 2 you could be forgiven for thinking this is simply Samsung’s way of staying ahead of the game. That said, as an effort it’s an incredible leap forward from the original Galaxy Tab 10.1. Wafer thin and achingly good to look at it’s a definite contender with only the huge drop in camera resolution and Honeycomb's ocassional glitches being low points.

What do you think? Is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 White Edition going to dissuade you from Apple's tablet? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Audi announce R8 e-tron

Posted: 13 May 2011 06:10 AM PDT

Think an electric car means driving around in a tiny box on wheels at 15mph? Think again..

Audi has announced that it is creating an electric version of its R8 supercar.

The first all electric car by the Audi, the R8 e-tron, is destined to hit our roads in late 2012. This could be the first of many eco friendly racers from the German based company, with Head of Electric Mobility Strategy Franciscus van Meel declaring that they 'want be the leading premium manufacturer of electric vehicles by 2020'.

The company have created the electric version of the supercar said to embody 'Vorsprung durch Technik' using Audi's so called 'Space Frame' aluminium body frame technology,  with the result being electric motor weighing in at a paltry 1,600 kg. No specs have been released yet, but if the car is anything like it's petrol guzzling twin, expect to be able to bomb along the Autobahn at a top speed of 187 mph.

“The R8 e-tron is a very important project for Audi because the competence and experience we glean from it will later flow into the large volume production of electric automobiles.” said van Meel.

The new electric model is part of a €5 billion commitment by Audi in to the development of new products and future technologies such as electric and hybrid cars.

iPad app news: Lucky Voice Karaoke app launched

Posted: 13 May 2011 05:43 AM PDT

The popular Karaoke service comes to iPad

Popular Karaoke service Lucky Voice has launched its own iPad app to allow people to make fools of themselves wherever they may roam.

The free app features a library of around 8,000 songs, but in order to have access to them in full users will need to by song credits or singing time through in app purchases.

Songs are then streamed to the iPad via Wi-Fi or 3G and then you'll be good to go with a backing track of questionable quality and those words will appear on the screen ready to turn purple as you blast them out. You can also edit and save playlists featuring your favourite songs.

Coming soon to the app is support for external microphones, the ability to control the song queue from the iPhone and the ability to hook the service up to your TV.

Although the Lucky Voice app boasts a whopping 8,000-strong catalogue of songs, we all know that girls will only ever use four: I Will Survive; The Greatest Love; It's Raining Men and We Are Family. If anyone's ever heard a woman sing anything else then you've witnessed a rare event

Alien game on its way from SEGA

Posted: 13 May 2011 03:52 AM PDT

After years of fairly rubbish spin-offs and AVP films Creative Assembly wants to make things right again.

Creative Assembly, the team behind the Total War series has started hiring for the production of a stand-alone Alien game with SEGA.

The image appeared after SEGA confirmed that their Creative Assembly studio would begin working on a Alien game with the intention of possibly aiming it towards the next generation of consoles, or at the very least pushing the current boundries of what we see on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

While normally we wouldn't feel the need to get so excited about such an announcement the thing that's got us most excited is that this isn't a movie tie-in. Notorious for being the worst possible types of games, movie tie-ins suceed almost everytime in completely failing to capture the action and suspense of the motion picture.

With that in mind, and considering the amount of effort SEGA is planning on putting into this project (expanding the studio), it's hard not to feel a small tinge of excitement at the prospect of a next-generation Alien game.

Is this news enough to convince you or do you think it'll just be another franchise game? Let us know what you think on Facebook or Twitter.

4G network could still cause problems

Posted: 13 May 2011 03:20 AM PDT

With 4G now set to arrive in the UK around 2013 Ofcom has started to raise concerns over the increase in data usage.

Ofcom has warned that the new 4G network will have to be treated in a completely different way to the current 3G network by operators.

After carrying out a survey the regulatory body found that huge numbers of Britons were spending far more on their phone bills than they had expected. While it's now becoming standard practise for phone contracts to include unlimited internet usage (which equates to around 500MB/1GB) Ofcom is concerned this will not be nearly enough.

The new network will offer speeds nearly 230% faster than 3G, which equates to a video being downloaded in just a third of the time it would take at present. With those speeds on offer it's understandable that usage will no doubt increase, and without proper regulation, so will the data plans.

Ofcom getting on the case can be nothing but good news for us consumers. With tablets now offering 3G capability and phones being able to act as mobile 'hotspots' the last thing we want at T3 towers is to get our hands on a shiny 4G phone only to be smacked with a hefty data bill.

Do you think data bills are too expensive, or would you be happy to pay a premium for 4G speeds? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.

New iPod nano: camera evidence mounts

Posted: 13 May 2011 03:13 AM PDT

"Environment aware" screen savers point to camera's return.

After a leaked pic purportedly showed the new iPod nano replete with a camera earlier this week, a newly unearthed patent suggests a snapper of some kind is almost certainly heading back to the pared down PMP.

Patently Apple has dug up a filing from November 2009 which details how “environmental sensors” would be able to change the nano’s screen saver depending on the ambient conditions. That means rain drops when it’s wet, sunshine when it’s bright.

That might seen generic, but the patent says the feature would use a camera to deliver context aware material to the screen. This is surely a pointer that a camera is being primed for Apple’s best-selling iPod.

There’s sure to be plenty more iPod nano gossip as Apple’s annual music event draw ever nearer. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more details as we get them.

Samsung and LG to debut 'retina display' for tablets

Posted: 13 May 2011 02:43 AM PDT

LG is widely known as having won the resolution race with the iPhone 4's retina display, but now, the tablet race has begun.

Samsung and LG have both revealed that they will be showcasing 'ultra high resultion' displays at the SID 2011 conference next week.

Samsung have been more than forthcoming revealing that the 300ppi display will be 10.1 inches and will accomplish a quite ridiculous resolution of 2,560 x1,600. As if to wet our appetites further the company has said that the displays could well be in service later this year.

LG however has been slightly less open about it's display but then again it's technology has already been proven in the form of the iPhone 4's astonishing 'Retina Display'. However what they're promising is a full range of screen sizes ranging from 3.5 all the way up to a frankly silly 84-inches, all of which will have a PPI greater than the human eye can recognise.

Whether Samsung or LG will be able to create the same 326ppi as seen on the iPhone 4 will be another matter. Either way we'll be keeping our eyes closely peeled on what they unveil next week.

Does this mean the iPad 3 will definitely have a retina display? Join the debate on Facebook or Twitter.

HTC Flyer contract price revealed

Posted: 13 May 2011 02:12 AM PDT

Pen-friendly slate is imminent, but has it been gazumped already?

The HTC Flyer has just been priced up for contract on Three. The Android Gingerbread-packing slate is set to costs £169 up front, and then £25 a month over two years. For that price you get a massive 15GB of data.

The news comes from one of Three’s catalogues, which clearly lists the deal despite it currently not being visible online. While the package might sound tempting, there’s no word on whether it includes the smartpen which HTC has touted as such a major feature. Yesterday it said it would be charging £47.99 for the accessory to those who want the Flyer SIM-free.

There’s no denying that this deal is decent value, but the question is whether the HTC Flyer is really worth nabbing when a slew of Android Honeycomb-loaded tabs are about to flood the market.

Are you planning on buying a Flyer? Or does HTC’s lack of bleeding edge Android software put you off? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nokia X7 hitting Three in June

Posted: 13 May 2011 01:14 AM PDT

New phone packs in latest "Symbian Anna" software.

Nokia’s X7, its latest top-end Symbian smartphone, is hitting Three next month. Announced back in April, the new blower is part of Espoo’s attempts to revive its ailing smartphone OS. The X7 packs in the latest update, dubbed Symbian “Anna”.

Sadly, there’s no word from Three about just how much the Nokia X7 will cost. But seeing as Nokia will be desperate to show that there’s life in Symbian yet, it’s unlikely that it’ll be a bank balance basher.

The phone’s certainly not lacking in smarts. It has a Black AMOLED, 4-inch screen, made of Gorilla Glass to stop nasty scratches and scrapes. There’s an 8 megapixel camera round the back, as well as HD video, GPS, HSDPA and Wi-Fi.

Posted: 12 May 2011 11:57 PM PDT

Deal makes Samsung Series S5 a seriously tempting proposition.

Three has struck a deal with Google which will see the network become “3G connectivity partner” for its new range of Chromebooks. The tie-up means punters will get free SIMs and free 3G data when they snag the newly announced Samsung Series 5 Chromebook.

Chrome's VP was clear to state that despite its low requirements on power and ease of use, the operating system will be staying with latpops and netbooks, with all their efforts instead focused on improving the users experience of these products.

When users buy a 3G-packing Chromebook, they’ll get 3GB of data free for three months, with a free SIM chucked in too. Once that data’s been used up, packages will start from £2.99 for a 500GB day pass.

There’ll be three monthly packages too, with 1GB costing £10, 3GB clocking in at £15 and a whacking 7GB for £25. In all, it means the forthcoming Series 5 is looking like a seriously good bet. The 3G model will cost £399 when it launches here in Blighty on 24 June.

Amazon tablet: "stay tuned" says CEO

Posted: 12 May 2011 11:31 PM PDT

No word on a release date or specs, but Amazon tablet is looking more nailed on than ever.

The much-mooted Amazon tablet has moved a step closer to reality, after the online retail giant’s CEO dropped the biggest hint yet about a full-on iPad rival. When asked about such a device, Jeff Bezos told Consumer Reports that punters should, “…stay tuned,” for more news.

However, he remained coy when pushed on what Amazon’s plans were, saying that any such device would not replace the best-selling Kindle. “We will always be very mindful that we will want a dedicated reading device. In terms of any other product introductions, I shouldn’t answer.”

The Amazon tablet has become the hottest rumour in the tech world in recent months. Word is the device will run Android Honeycomb, as the Kindle-maker looks beyond its ace, but basic eReader.

Will you be stumping up for an Amazon tablet? Or should it stick to making eReaders and let the big gadget makers get on with battling it out in the tablet space? Let us know what you think now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
