Intel boss laments Nokia hook-up
Like an ill-advised one-night stand, Intel CEO Paul Otellini has admitted that his company's tie-in with Nokia was a huge mistake. The MeeGo-based alliance between the two companies ended when Nokia jumped ship for Microsoft and Otellini reckons the tie-in has delayed Intel's work on smartphone chips.

The micro-SIM cards found in the iPad and iPhone 4 could be getting even smaller after Apple filed plans for a new design with the European standards board. The move would free up a little more space inside Apple's tech and will reportedly be implemented in 2012, if approved.

The iPhone 5 release date rumours gathered pace today as the November 21st continued to cause a buzz after a Phones4U employee reiterated the release date once more. It does seem that the iPhone will lack the latest NFC tech, adding to the speculation that the iPhone 5 may infact be known as the iPhone 4S.

With the PlayStation Network back online Sony offered two free games to download as an apology, with some users bemoaning the out-dated offering, whilst others appreciated any offering. One game sure to please all would be Rockstar’s L.A. Noire, gamers can expect expansions available as BestBuy leaked the first DLC ahead of its release on Friday.

Tablets galore as Blackberry announced the date the PlayBook will be coming to the UK will be June 16th with prices lower than that on offer from Apple. Acer, however, have had to put back their release date for the Iconia Tab A100, after missing the shipping schedule; the second set-back it's suffered this year.

A Sony Xperia Play shipment was stolen ahead of it launch in New Zealand, delaying the release of the phone there. Some good news for Android users is that the previously iPhone exclusive app, Plants vs. Zombies will be available on the Android platform on May 30th.

Gaming smartphone faces delays in New Zealand as launch stock is stolen

Having got off to a rocky start following its UK launch last month, Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play handset faces further woes as the shipment of launch units for Vodafone New Zealand is stolen en route.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst it is currently unknown exactly how many Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handsets were stolen in the heist, Vodafone New Zealand has officially announced that the theft has caused unexpected delays and as such will result in the handset’s release being pushed back.

Making the announcement via its official Twitter feed the New Zealand network provider announced: “Vodafone New Zealand regret to advise the Xperia Play launch will be delayed. Major security breech. The shipment of phones has been stolen.”

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play was hotly tipped as a mobile gaming revolution prior to launch offering PlayStation controls on a smartphone. Following its arrival, however, the colloquially known PSP phone has failed to ignite much interest in the crowded mobile market with a limited run of dated games not able to draw in a core gaming audience.

Have you splashed out on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play or were you left disappointed by the gaming phone? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Next-gen Apple iPhone to hit UK markets on November 21st?

The fifth instalment of Apple’s hugely successful iPhone range is expected to hit stores across the UK on November 21st, a representative of retailer Phones4u has claimed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking exclusively with T3.com, Shazna, a customer sales representative at the St Albans branch of Phones4u has confirmed that "the iPhone 5 has been delayed until November following an issue with the handset's software."

A November release would add velocity to the spate of rumours suggesting that the iPhone 5 will be unveiled in September 2011, doing away with Apple’s previously rigid annual summer release schedule.

Adding further fuel to the fire, the retailer announced that Apple's next generation handset, which they pegged with a November 21st release, would "be pretty much the same as the iPhone 4 with new software. The software is the main difference with the iPhone 5."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update:
T3 has contacted the St Albans store again today and once again had confirmed that “the iPhone 5 has been delayed until November but the only difference between the 4 and the 5 is software updates, that’s the only difference.” The retailer went on to announce: "Apple had a software issue with the handset so they are still waiting to fix that up so it will be November when it is coming out.”

Having contacted Phones4u head office in regards to the claimed iPhone 5 arrival, the retail chain stated that it would not be issuing an official quote on the handset's arrival at this time adding word of a November 21st release can be attributed to an "over-excited member of staff who is clearly a fan of the iPhone brand."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst a November release would add velocity to the spate of rumours suggesting that the iPhone 5 will be unveiled in September 2011, doing away with Apple’s previously rigid annual summer release schedule, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller, announced at the unveiling of the WWDC 2011 dates: “At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS.”

The idea that the iPhone 5 will not be available in stores until November 21st suggests a late September unveiling with staff at Phones4u in St Albans adding to T3 that Apple’s latest edition would be available on similar tariffs to those offered to early iPhone 4 adopters.

The Worldwide Developers Conference is scheduled to kick off on June 6th with the expected appearance of Steve Jobs. Component rumblings for the iPhone 5 continue to dominate the web with a dual-core processor expected, added camera capabilities and a 4-inch edge-to-edge display all hotly tipped for iPhone 5 inclusion.

First word of a delayed iPhone 5 arrival came back in February as industry analysts suggested the next-gen Apple blower was to be pushed back following component shortages and late orders on Apple's part.

LA Noire first DLC leaks ahead of full game's release

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:50 AM PDT

Retailer Best Buy once again leaks upcoming release plans

Despite the full game release not set to hit stores until this Friday, May 20th, leaky retailer Best Buy has outed details about the first downloadable content pack for LA Noire.

According to the retailer’s latest LA Noire launch ad, currently doing the rounds in the US, the first 16 customers to snap up the eagerly awaited crime fighting game at US Best Buy stores will receive a code that unlocks “the first DLC pack” when available.

Not content with outing Rockstar’s LA Noire DLC plans, Best Buy has gone as far as revealing the additional content pack’s title with the DLC release reportedly set to adopt the moniker “Nicholson Electroplating Arson Case.”

Whilst acting as confirmation of an imminent DLC release the Best Buy ad is not the first mention of additional LA Noire content with the game’s developer Team Bondi last week suggesting content cut from the final release may later land in DLC form.

"We've got two full desks - burglary and bunko - that never made it into the game, so we've been thinking [about] those and whether we'll do them," the studio announced.

Will LA Noire be the year’s gaming hit so far or will the crime thriller fail to push the right buttons? Share your thoughts on the upcoming release via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung's PenTile brings retina display to tablets

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:43 AM PDT

The next stage in display of tablets has been announced by Samsung.

Samsung has released details on a prototype display called PenTile, which will bring a retina display to its future tablets.

It may not have come to the iPad 2 but Samsung has shown it is possible with the news of a high resolution display for their tablet, the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab.

The display boasts a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, something that a number of leading all-in-one computers still lack.

Samsung has achieved the feat. by placing 300 pixels in a single inch, leaving them so dense that the majority ot people will not be able to distinguish between each pixel with their naked eye.

Along with the increased resolution Samsung claims that the power management has improved despite the added strain on the battery; a potent combination for any mobile display.

Currently, PenTile is not officially scheduled for any future tablets, but a commercial version is likely to be available later this year.

The advancement will bring a comparison to the iPhone 4's retina display which was absent from the iPad 2; a fact that has left many anticipating the iPad 3 will incorporate a higher resolution.

Android app news: Plants vs Zombies coming May 30th

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:04 AM PDT

Amazon app store exclusivity could hit UK users, though.

One of the most popular mobile games of all-time, Plants vs Zombies, will finally arrive on the Android Market later this month.

The defence strategy game, in which you fend off the undead using plantlife toting various repellents, has been a massive hit on the iPhone since it launched in February 2010 and now Android fans will be able to get in on the action too.

The bad news for UK-based Android handset owners is that the release will be exclusive to the Amazon Android app store, which is yet to launch on these shores. Amazon will offer the title free of charge for the first week and then $2.99 thereafter.

Developer PopCap has signed an exclusive deal with Amazon to sell games through its app store, which means there'll be no love for the Android Market at this point Whether this will be different for the UK Market remains to be seen.

A couple of months back, UK Android users were forced to wait for Angry Birds Rio after Amazon tied up initial exclusivity. Let's hope that a deal can be hashed out to ensure that us Brits don't miss out on this great game.

iPhone 5 NFC: mobile wallet smarts not included, says analysts

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Will they, won't they NFC gossip continues.

Apple will not be loading up the iPhone 5 with NFC tech. That’s the latest word from analyst firm Bernstein, adding to a string of rumours surrounding whether the mobile wallet smarts will make it into Apple’s next-gen blower.

NFC has been touted as a key feature for the iPhone 5, also known as the iPhone 4S, since late last year. The contactless payment technology is already sitting pretty in a number of Android phones, as the likes of Samsung and Google look to make it ubiquitous in the next year.

However, this latest analyst note adds to the growing feeling that Apple will leave NFC out of the iPhone 5, waiting to see whether it takes off and becomes easy to implement before it’s included in any future products.

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Has Sony done enough to say sorry?

Sony has announced its Welcome Back package which includes a pick of two free PS3 games as it begins to restore online services.

It is almost 25 days since the PlayStation Network and associated services were hacked by as yet an unknown source and now Sony is trying to make it up to users by offering two of the following games for free:

- LittleBigPlanet
- Infamous
- Wipeout HD/Fury
- Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty
- Dead Nation

Additionally, non PlayStation Plus subscribers will get 30 days free access to the service which regularly includes exclusive games and other PS3-related content. If you're already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you'll get 60 free days subscription to make up for that precious online time lost, while Sony says it is working to compensate PlayStation Home users also.

If you've got a PSP account, you can download two PSP games from a list which includes LittleBigPlanet, ModNation, Pursuit Force and Killzone Liberation. Music Unlimited subscribers will also get 30 days free subscription.

All can be accessed from the PlayStation Store, which at the time of writing is still yet to go live.

The PSN outage has obviously caused something of a stir and you the T3 readers, have been having your say in the social networking world.

T3 Facebook fan Maharg Snikliw commented: "Having being a Sony fan for many a year, it has left me with a lot of doubt's, i have been using the Xbox over the past 4 weeks, whilst I was waiting to get back online with PSN, but it has definitely made me think about which platform to carry on in the long term, and I am a Playstation Plus paid member"

Alternatively, not all have been put off by the PSN downtime with fellow T3 Facebooker Ryan Seymour saying: "I'll stick with Playstation through thick and thin. This whole episode hasn't really bothered me. I've been too busy to go online anyway and I trust Sony to learn from their mistakes. Life goes on eh!!!"

Nokia refutes recent Microsoft buyout claims

Posted: 17 May 2011 02:59 AM PDT

Phone giant denies claims of imminent takeover

Nokia has hit out at claims that computer giant Microsoft is planning a buyout of the Finnish phone manufacturer, stating such rumours are ‘inaccurate’.

The reports, which steamed from regular Nokia leakster Eldar Murtazin, suggested Microsoft and Nokia are in talks with the Redmond software company readying a deal that would see it acquire the mobile arm of the N8 creator.

With Microsoft taking over VoIP leader Skype in recent weeks for a hefty $8.5 billion fee, Murtazin claimed via his blog that Nokia was next on the company’s hit list stating: "Next week Nokia will start the negotiations about the sale of its phone unit to Microsoft.

"For now the results of the negotiations won't be public, but the deal might close before the end of 2011. Both companies are in a big hurry."

Hitting back at these bold claims, one of Nokia UK’s leading PRs, Mark Squires has refuted the remarks via his Twitter account stating: "We typically don't comment on rumors. But we have to say that Eldar's rumours are getting obviously less accurate with every passing moment."

Nokia announced back in February that it had ditched its longstanding Symbian OS from upcoming flagship smartphone devices and teamed up with Microsoft to incorporate the company’s Windows Phone 7 OS.

Will Microsoft takeover the mobile arm of Nokia or are such claims wild over exaggeration of a simply business deal that will see Nokia utilise the Windows Mobile OS? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The mobile maker has handed over serial number details of faulty units to retailers in an attempt to prevent any more of the dodgy devices being sold, while Engadget has published the full list so punters can see if their tablet has been affected.

“RIM determined that approximately one thousand BlackBerry PlayBook tablets (16 GB) were shipped with an OS build that may result in the devices being unable to properly load software upon initial set-up,” announced a BlackBerry spokesperson in an official release.

“The majority of the affected devices are still in the distribution channel and haven’t reached customers. RIM is working to replace the affected devices.

“In the small number of cases where a customer received a PlayBook that is unable to properly load software upon initial set-up, they can contact RIM for assistance.”

The PlayBook has been generally well received, getting favourable reviews for its slick design and neat OS. However, the lack of key features, like native email, have seen it given short shrift in some quarters. This recall will only create more dissenting voices.

Windows Phone Mango features officially revealed

Posted: 17 May 2011 01:01 AM PDT

Microsoft shows off plans for next-gen version of mobile OS.

Microsoft has handed over details of its next-gen version of Windows Phone. Dubbed Mango, the newly-revealed functionality is all about work and productivity, as the Big M looks to do battle with BlackBerry.

Pinnable email folders lead the line. This new feature lets you stick an entire folder of messages to the homescreen for quick and easy access. Microsoft says these can be grouped by person or project, so you’ll be able to bring up relevant missives in quick sharp fashion.

There’ll be conversation view in email, meaning you get threaded messages instead of having to go back and forth to check what someone said in their previous mail. This has been a serious with Windows Phone and promises to be a welcome addition.

The ability to search servers is also being added, so mail users can snag and access messages that aren’t stored locally. Throw in a new ‘Lync’ app, a ‘unified communications’ feature which aggregates Instant Messages and allows you to chat with co-workers, and it seems Microsoft has gone some way to getting its OS up to scratch for the workplace.

There’s no word on just when Windows Phone Mango will be released. The update has been mooted for later this year, and is expected to land on a slew of new devices, including Nokia’s first ever Windows Phone.

Secret Apple launch planned

Posted: 16 May 2011 11:36 PM PDT

Details of mysterious plans slip out, but what have Jobs and co got planned?

Apple is set to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its first retail store with what could be a major product launch. That’s according to BGR, which has got hold of a series of secretive plans which Apple stores are set to enact this coming weekend.

Word is that an overnight shift from Saturday into Sunday has been planned, with managers and Genius Bar staff expected to clock on. What’s more, workers have been told to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement with Apple, with phones being locked away to stop any leaks.

Apparently, Apple stores have already received the new kit, which will be hidden behind black curtains until Sunday 22 May. Staffers have had to download a protected file called “training” which won’t work until Saturday afternoon.

There’s no news on just what this product could be. A specially-designed iPad? The iPhone 5? Cupertino is certainly doing a good job of keeping everyone guessing? What has Apple got planned? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 5 release date leaked as November 21st

Next-gen Apple iPhone to hit UK markets on November 21st?

The fifth instalment of Apple’s hugely successful iPhone range is expected to hit stores across the UK on November 21st, a representative of retailer Phones4u has claimed.
