Nintendo 3DS privacy issues see consoles bricked

Posted: 20 May 2011 08:11 AM PDT

Users hit back at Nintendo's privacy concerns

Nintendo 3DS early adopters are being warned they risk ‘signing their life away’ after it emerged Nintendo owns all of user’s 3DS content and reserves the right to remotely brick their portable 3D consoles without warning.

An aspect of the console’s Terms and Conditions overlooked by many users of the glasses-free 3D gaming device awards Nintendo the right to access user’s in-console content and, if Ninty deems you to be using the console in an inappropriate manner, brick the device.

Furthermore by agreeing to the Terms and Conditions associated to the Nintendo 3DS, users are allowing Nintendo to legally own all of their content including messages, images and personal information.

Update: Speaking with T3 Nintendo has been keen to stress that such Terms and Condition requirements relate only to US-based users of the 3DS with European laws preventing such practises in the UK and across EU nations.

"Nintendo would like to reassure any concerned consumers that under our European terms and conditions and in compliance with European requirements Nintendo does not have rights to user content, such as comments, messages, images, photos or movies, which are shared in private communications between users or simply stored on Nintendo 3DS," announced an official spokesperson for the Japanese company.

With many users no doubt failing to fully read the seemingly over demanding but perfectly legal T&Cs early adopters of the handheld console that launched in the UK earlier this year are now fearing for their privacy.

Tasking with hitting back at Nintendo’s controlling conditions campaign group have sent more than 150 cardboard bricks to Nintendo’s offices in protest.

"We urge Nintendo to drop their terms and conditions and apologise,” said Joshua Gay of the Brick Nintendo Before They Brick You campaign.

He added: “We should not have to agree to these ludicrous demands. Other companies do not impose them and we rely on our freedom, autonomy and control when we use technology.”

Have you snagged yourself a Nintendo 3DS, were you away of the privacy issues when agreeing to the terms and conditions? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

T3 goes hands-on with HTC's first tablet

HTC’s first attempt at tackling the tablet market, the HTC Flyer has landed in the T3 offices and so we have compiled a gallery of hands-on images with the 7-inch device.

- HTC Flyer pictures: Click here to launch the gallery

Available to buy now priced £599.99 as a standalone device the HTC Flyer, first unveiled at Mobile World Congress back in February, comes equipped with Google’s Android 2.4 Gingerbread mobile operating system with an upgrade to the tablet centric 3.0 Honeycomb reportedly already in the works.

Touting a 7-inch display with a 1024 x 600p resolution the Flyer’s spec sheet is plumped by the inclusion of a 1.5GHz single core processor 1GB of RAM and HTC’s hugely popular Sense UI skin running over Google’s Android OS.

With full Flash 10 and HTML 5 compatibility, the HTC Flyer comes boxed with a HTC Magic Pen stylus for note taking and improved user interaction with a 5-megapixel rear mounted camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities joins by a 1.3-megapixel forward-facing snapper.

Can the HTC Flyer be the first tablet to truly challenge Apple’s iPad or is its smaller form factor and high price a drawback?  Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple's iPhone and iPad lead iOS game download push

Apple’s iOS App Store sees more than 5 million games downloaded per day as iPhone and iPad users look to fill their devices with gaming goodies, new figures have revealed.

Having recently received an award from the Guinness Book of World Records for having the ‘largest downloadable video game store’ in history, Apple is now reported to be totting up more than 5 million gaming app downloads per day across the US and EU markets.

Compiled by Distimo and Newzoo, the new figures have revealed that of the 5 million daily downloads, 88 per cent of these gaming apps are in the form of free-to-download content with just 12 per cent being paid for.

Further revelations from the compiled data showed that 90 per cent of the gaming downloads are made by iPhone touting iOS users, 9 per cent coming from iPad owners and a single per cent in the form of Mac App downloads.

Weird News: Cheat spotting shin pads & London Mayor on Twitter

Posted: 20 May 2011 06:48 AM PDT

The week's weird and wonderful goings on in the world of tech.

Cheat-Spotting Shin-Pads

We've lost count of the number times we’ve yelled at the TV screen “he ‘ardly touched you, get up!” when watching a top-flight football match. With these shin-pads we might be shouting only when it goes against Liverpool. They are designed to detect contact made, giving an immediate response to whether the player was touched or if they were re-enacting Patrick Vieira (YouTube link).

85-inch B&O TV sold for $85,000

Bang & Olufsen’s 85-inch screen sold for a massive $85,000…for you out there who aren’t super-keen mathematicians that's a stunning one grand per inch.

Boris Johnson holds Q&A over Twitter

Twitter-mania is well and truly here, with the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, hosting an impromptu Twitter question and answer session.

AGA Stove is modernised

The traditional AGA cooker has had a re-work with the latest model including on-the-go control; allowing you to control the stove via an app on your smartphone, putting an end to the panicky thought, “did I turn the oven off?”

Customisable Keyboard

Sporting jazzy, fluorescent colours this Keyless Keyboard comes with an added extra; you can re-arrange the placement of the “keys” making it meet your demands – be it if you’re a lefty, want a number pad, or if you want to swipe rather than tap.

Nintendo Wii price drop sees console below £100

Posted: 20 May 2011 06:39 AM PDT

Wii available for under £100 for the first time

Nintendo’s former motion gaming powerhouse the Nintendo Wii has dropped below the £100 mark for the first time in the UK as anticipation builds for the E3 unveiling on the Wii 2.

Retailers GAME and gamestation have today both confirmed they are to drop the price of the Nintendo Wii effective immediately with Ninty’s flagship console to be available in store or online priced £99.99 bundled with either Mario Kart or Wii Sports Resort.

“The opportunity to buy the Nintendo Wii for under £100 is a fantastic chance for those who previously haven’t experienced the Wii. We are delighted to offer this deal to our customers,” announced Neil Ashurst, Head of PR for GAME and gamestation.

Earlier this week what is claimed to be the much mooted Wii 2 leaked in a secretly filmed video from an advanced developer briefing. Whilst little was revealed about the upcoming console’s specification, screens of the units controller were spotted with the hand-held peripheral seemingly set to sport a large touchscreen input display.

Will the latest Nintendo Wii price drop tempt you into snapping up the console or are you going to stick it out for the Wii 2? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple Mac scareware peppers user's screens with porn

Posted: 20 May 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Porn images used to attack Mac users

Apple Mac users are facing a security scare after hundreds of Mac fans contacted Apple forums in a bid to rid their machines of a fake Mac-specific security program.

Dubbed MACDefender the malicious software which began circulating earlier this month is advertised as a free Mac security system. Once installed, however, the scareware pretends to scan user’s machines and fabricates a list of nonexistent issues users are then required to pay to fix.

Users not keen to splash the cash have reported the software will then fire up a web browser when unattended and pepper their screens with pornographic images.

Speaking with the BBC, Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos revealed that the vast majority of scareware the security firm deals with is targeted at Windows machines. However, he was keen to stress: "Although there is much less malware in existence for Mac OS X than there is for Windows, that's no reason to put your head in the sand and think that there are no Mac threats out there.”

Are you a Mac user, have you been fooled by MACDefender? Share your stories with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

LA Noire crashes: Sony and Rockstar deny blame

Posted: 20 May 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Joint statement comes after Rockstar said new PS3 firmware was causing console to overheat.

Sony and Rockstar have issued a joint statement, denying that either company is to blame for a series of console crashes which have occurred while gamers get stuck into new bestseller LA Noire.

Yesterday, Rockstar said that Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update, 3.61, was causing the console to overheat and turn itself off. It then turned out the issue was not just limited to the PS3, with the Xbox 360 also hit.

The joint statement says, “We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3's overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire. At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat.”

Both companies say they’re looking for a solution. But if neither is to blame, just who’s fault is it? Expect to hear more about this in the coming days as Rockstar and Sony delve deeper. Has your PS3 been affected? How about your Xbox 360? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Google snaps up Modu

Posted: 20 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Expect to see Android accessories galore after latest Google deal.

Google has snagged all of micro mobile maker Modu’s patents for around £3 million. The Israeli company, which produced the tiny phone with interchangeable “jackets”, went to the wall at the end of last year.

While Google has not said what it will do with its newly-acquired intellectual property, you can expect to see Mountain View create Android-branded accessories using Modu ideas at some point in the future.

Modu’s idea of using different cases to create different functionality was quickly outpaced by the burgeoning smartphone market. Now it seems it might have a say in which major player comes out on top in the battle for smartphone supremacy.

Fujitsu Android tablet out this year

Posted: 20 May 2011 01:01 AM PDT

Third quarter release and low price tag expected.

Fujitsu is prepping a 7-inch Android tablet, for release in the third quarter of this year. The new slate follows the company’s 10.1-inch business-based Windows 7 tab, already unleashed in Europe and the US.

The tablet is set to pack in Android 3.1, meaning it should also be in line for an upgrade to the futuristic new Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS, due for release at the end of 2011.

But it’s the Fujisu Android tablet’s price that’s really got us excited. The company says it’ll start flogging it at just over £200. While that price is converted from US dollars ($347) and could go up a touch, it seems we might have a new budget contender on our hands.

PSN Store returning 24 May

Posted: 19 May 2011 11:36 PM PDT

Schedule details just how Sony plans to get store back on track.

Sony’s PSN might be back up and running, but its store still remains closed for business. However, news of a relaunch for the online games emporium has leaked out, with Sony telling game developers it’ll be back up and running on 24 May.

The Big S is planning to load the PSN Store up with all the content that was due to go live while the service was down thanks to a serious security breach. Games set for release on 26 April will be outed on 24 May, with titles set for 3 May hitting the PSN Store on 27 May.

With more releases planned for 31 May and 3 June, Sony hopes to be back to its normal release schedule by the middle of next month. PSN Content Manager Jack Osorno has sent a message to devs, welcoming them back and offering help with the extremely tight new release schedule.

“We thank you for your patience as we work to resume service of the PlayStation Store," he said. “If there are concerns [regarding new release dates], we are willing to consider adjusting the release date of your content on this schedule.”

Looking forward to spending some cash in the relaunched PSN Store? Or have you jumped ship to Xbox 360? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple cloud streaming: locally stored segments to cut lag

Posted: 19 May 2011 11:19 PM PDT

Uncovered patent suggests Apple has nifty plans to stop nasty buffering.

More details about Apple’s streaming service, tentatively dubbed iCloud, have emerged. An unearthed patent application which suggests the new service will rely on tracks being partially stored on iOS devices, to prevent any lag when skipping through tracks.

The plan will allow for one unified list of locally stored and cloud-based tunes. In order to cut out any buffering issues, users will be able to “sync partial music”, according to the patent.

Speaking of other streaming services, Apple says, “When the electronic device is unaware of the next media item to play back, the electronic device can require undesired pauses between media items. Similarly, when a user skips to a different media item for playback, the electronic device can require a long pause during which no media item is played back as the new media item is streamed to the device."

Apple’s idea means that when you choose a song or movie, it’ll immediately start playing, while iOS connects to your cloud-based digital locker to access the rest of the file. This will hopefully prevent any caching issues, which are a major setback on Spotify’s iOS and Android apps.

The Cupertino company is expected to release official details of iCloud at its WWDC event next month. Word is all four major record labels are set to sign off on licensing deals for the service next week. In the meantime, hit our Facebook and Twitter pages for more iCloud news as we get it.
