Sony PSN password reset page taken down again

Posted: 18 May 2011 08:43 AM PDT

PSN facing new round of security concerns

Sony’s PSN woes continue as the tech giant is once again forced to take down its mandatory password reset page, a security measure brought in following the recent hacker intrusion.

Making PSN sign-in unavailable via its websites Sony has been forced to take down the mandatory password reset page after it was spotted the two bits of information required to change your password, PSN account email and date of birth, were both items of information accessed and compromised in last month’s hacker attacks.

With security concerns plaguing the re-launch of Sony’s online gaming system, this latest blimp in the service’s re-launch has sparked unease with returning users fearful that hackers could easily imitate them and reset their passwords to access and utilise stolen accounts.

Speaking on the latest downtime Sony has said: "Unfortunately this also means that those who are still trying to change their password via Playstation.com or Qriocity.com will be unable to do so for the time being.

The company added: "This is due to essential maintenance and at present it is unclear how long this will take. In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information."

Have the continued PSN issues put you off using Sony’s online gaming service? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iCloud streaming service hinted at by job listing

Posted: 18 May 2011 03:27 AM PDT

Apple to launch iCloud streaming service in the near future

A new job posting by Cupertino tech giant Apple has created further speculation that the iPhone and iPad maker is set to launch a cloud-based music streaming service.

The advertisement, posted on the company’s official website, has announced the search for a “Media Streaming Engineering Manager” a position that has created a storm of rumours around the imminent arrival of the much mooted iCloud service.

With the position to be filled within Apple’s Interactive Media Group in Santa Clara Valley, a unit that works predominantly on iTunes, Safari and QuickTime, Apple has revealed it is looking for a candidate who will be “an excellent engineering manager to join our team and help develop our media streaming engine for our iOS, Mac OS X, and Windows products."

Other CV additions required from a successful applicant include previous experience designing media streaming systems.

With Apple believed to have already finished building its cloud-based music streaming service, the iPod manufacturer has recently been reported to have signed two major record labels to its upcoming iCloud service, a system that will allow users to store and stream their own music remotely as well as offering Spotify-esque subscription options.

Will Apple’s mooted iCloud service be the next dominate force in the digital music market or will the likes of Spotify and Google Music steal its thunder? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

99.7% of Android phones are at risk of infiltration

Posted: 18 May 2011 03:18 AM PDT

Google applications leave unsecured data for at least 14 days giving criminals access to personal information

Over 99% of Android phones are vulnerable to data theft when accessing the internet from an unsecured network.

Applications installed on devices carrying Android interact with Google services by asking for an authentication token, which serves as a form of digital ID.

The tokens then become vulnerable to theft if they are sent over an unsecured wireless network, making them easily accessible to criminals.

The data being leaked is done so through using web-based services such as Google Calendar, with older versions of the software most susceptible.

Having gained access to the token your personal information is at risk, along with access to bank details and passwords.

The data you’ve inputted is stored for up to 14 days, removing the need to keep logging in to a particular service. The submitted information is then stored in serves in an unencrypted form giving criminals the chance to steal the data.

The findings come from German Security Researchers, at the University of Ulm, who were looking into how Android phones handled information.

Any Android phone running the 2.3.4 version is safe after an update removed the risk; but shows only 0.3% of Android devices have this software installed.

Users have been asked to update their phone to avoid becoming a victim, with Google looking to get this updates to people faster than they are currently managing.

Intel: Android and MeeGo tablets to dominate Computex

Posted: 18 May 2011 03:16 AM PDT

Is MeeGo about to make an impact with Intel backing?

Intel has remained fairly quiet during the tablet boom. Most tablets have been turning to Nvidia chips and ARM processors, since they’re better set up for mobile devices than Intel’s PC-based architecture. That may be about to change, though, as the company has hinted that a raft of new devices will be on show at the Computex show later this month.

The expo, which takes place in Taiwan, is set to be littered with tablets concealing Intel innards, among which, according to Intel chief Paul Otellini, will be a number of Android and even MeeGo devices.

Looking further into the year, Otellini has suggested that there’ll be over 35 Intel-powered tablets landing this year, suggesting a resurgence form the company’s mobile division.

The mention of MeeGo is interesting. With Android Honeycomb hotting up, can the new platform – devised by Intel and Nokia – hold its own? We’ve barely seen any of it in action, so the jury’s out. Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 revealed

Posted: 18 May 2011 03:02 AM PDT

17mm thin machine packs in some seriously smart specs.

Lenovo has just pulled the wrappers off of its new MacBook Air rival. The ThinkPad X1 comes chock with top-end specs, but measures just 17mm thin and tips the scales at just 1.81kg.

There’s a 13.3-inch screen, made from Gorilla Glass in order to stop any unseemly cracks, with a LED backlit keyboard, Dolby Home Theatre display and a RapidCharge feature which gives 80 per cent battery in just half an hour.

On top of that, Lenovo has also outed a new ThinkCentre Edge 91z Aio desktop. It has a 21.5-inch glossy panel, 80GB SSD and Intel i7 processor. The ThinkPad is up for grabs at the end of the month, with the ThinkCentre hitting shelves in July.

Apple priming thinner SIM cards

Posted: 18 May 2011 02:21 AM PDT

Apple looking to get new SIM standard, creating ever thinner devices.

Apple has proposed a new, super-slim design for SIM cards, enabling smartphones to get even thinner. That’s according to Reuters, which has had word from an Orange exec about the plans.

According to ETSI, the European telecoms standards people, Apple has made the proposal, which would see phones made by Cupertino and its key rivals use the tech. “This process may take some time, up to a year or more, if there is strong disagreement between industry players,” said an ETSI spokesperson. “However, when there is broad consensus among the companies participating in the standards committee, the process can be accelerated to a number of months.”

Orange said it was keen on the move and that Apple’s request to ETSI had been made with a number of other mobile networks. These new SIMs are set to be even smaller than the microSIM currently found in the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

This proposal also suggests Apple has decided against building SIMs into its phones and tablets, bypassing the need for punters to buy from mobile networks. For more on this and the rest of the day’s gadget news, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

MacBook Air: new models primed

Posted: 18 May 2011 01:23 AM PDT

June of July release for super-slim laptops.

The new MacBook Air isn’t even close to a year old. But already Apple is looking to upgrade its super-slim laptops, with new models rumoured for release in June or July.

The news comes from Taiwanese component suppliers, speaking with Digitimes. Sources close to companies who build and assemble the MacBook Air say updated versions of both the 11.6 and 13.3-inch machines are getting Intel’s new Sandy Bridge chips and Apple’s much-trumpeted Thunderbolt tech.

Last month, Apple revealed new models of the iMac which pack the same tech, while updated MacBook Pros, released in February, also tout the same specced up archictecture and USB-bashing connectivity.

Word is that shipments of the new Apple devices will start at the end of the month, with Cupertino set to reveal all in June or July. With its Worldwide Developer Conference kicking off in the first week of June, don’t be surprised to see them there first.

Nokia N9 ad leaked

Posted: 18 May 2011 12:02 AM PDT

12 megapixel camera, new Ovi services and stunning design detailed.

The Nokia N9’s, Espoo’s much leaked flagship MeeGo handset, was cancelled once the Finnish phone maker got into bed with Microsoft and Windows Phone 7. But the intrepid mobile watchers at Pocket Now have managed to get hold of a never released ad for the top-end device.

The clip, which can be seen below, gives a quick look at a phone that many believed would save Nokia before Microsoft swooped. It has a 12 megapixel camera to match the Symbian-packing N8, Ovi services including Maps and Drive and, of course, the MeeGo OS running atop a stunning touchscreen.

There’s a slideout keyboard, just as spy shots had suggested, as well as a virtual panel that looks much sharper than that found on current versions of Symbian.

Take a gander at the video now and let us know what you think of the Nokia device that never was on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad app news: Dark Horse comics app launched

Posted: 18 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Dark Horse characters join Spidey and Superman on the iPad

Comic book publisher Dark Horse has launched a free app for the Apple iPad and iPhone, joining rival stables Marvel and DC on the App Store.

The launch sees classic titles like Hellboy, Axe Cop, Buffy, Conan and Emily The Strange arrive on the iPad for the first time, with titles starting at just $0.99 (that's 59p in proper money), while there's also a host of free comics for users to download.

Other titles available through the Dark Horse iPad app include The Umbrella Academy, The Terminator, Star Wars Let Me In and the The Mass Effect comic series.

While Dark Horse doesn't boast many of the household names like Spider-Man and Batman, the publisher is renowned for producing great graphic novels with a little more of an adult edge.

The app boasts cloud storage for all users meaning that your comics will sit on a digital bookshelf without using up vital hard-drive space on your hard-drive.

PSN: small percentage of cancellations, says boss

Posted: 17 May 2011 11:50 PM PDT

Sony says it's too early to tell whether return of PSN has been a success.

Kaz Hirai, Sony’s gaming chief, has said that only a small number of gamers have called Sony to cancel their PSN accounts. His comments, to the Wall Street Journal, come as the online service finally gets back on its feet after weeks offline owing to an attack by hackers.

Hirai told the WSJ that, “…a very small percentage,” of callers to Sony wanted to leave PSN completely. This suggests that chatter about a mass exodus from the PS3 has been somewhat overplayed.

Having been praised by Sony CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, for his handling of the crisis, Hirai did sound a cautionary note about the success of PSN’s return to normality. “We have to earn back the trust and loyalty we may have lost in this circumstance. That's our goal and that's one we have to reach."

Stringer, however, was more bullish, attacking those who claimed that Sony’s security wasn’t up to scratch. "We had no reason to believe that our security was not good and still no reason to believe it because we have plenty of people looking at it. We've learned that we just have to keep improving our security."

New flagship all-weather GPS with touchscreen

Navigation and mapping experts Garmin has launched their most advanced handheld GPS device to date – the all weather Montana 650t, part of the Montana series

Announced at their press event in Austria, the Montana range is the new flagship handheld model, usurping the Oregon's place at the top. The device is a rugged multi-purpose touchscreen device aimed at the adventure/lifestyle market.

“We now have one device to fulfill all of your rugged GPS needs. From navigating waterways in your boat and traversing the back country in your ATV, to hiking the Austrian Alps” announced Dan Bartel from Garmin.

We've brought you news about Garmin's multifunction GPS, but also officially announced at it's press event, but available since April is the latest addition to the Forerunner range – the 610 GPS training watch.

The 610 sees Garmin introduce touchscreen technology into the established Forerunner range, hoping to capitalise on the current trend in touch control devices. Like its predecessors, the 610 is targeted at track athletes and serious running enthusiasts, but it can even be controlled while wearing running gloves – a common obstacle for other touchscreen interfaces.

“Running with Forerunner 610 is like having a coach with you every step of the way,” advises Andy Silver, Outdoor and Fitness Product Manager at Garmin. Adding “From giving the basics such as pace, distance and time to monitoring your effort through heart rate, to creating interval workouts and racing a friend on the other side of the world”

Additional advanced features include vibration alerts for when audible tones cannot be heard and a new 'Training Effect' metric that measures the impact of exercise on users' aerobic fitness.
