Apple's iCloud could be faster than the rest
The forthcoming Apple music-streaming service might have a leg-up on its competitors by storing portions of songs locally via iTunes. A new patent entitled "Local storage of a portion of streamed media items," has been filed by Apple. This would mean the song would start playing via iTunes before searching for it elsewhere on the internet to fill in the gaps.

The tablet is continuing to grow with BlackBerry’s PlayBook having reached 250,000 sales in its first month of trading. This may act as positive omen for Dell, whose Streak Pro 10-inch tablet is expected in June.

Nintendo responded to the outage of Wii 2 footage yesterday as the console rumours gathers pace ahead of its overdue release. PlayStation users may look to move away from Sony as fresh reports suggest the console is susceptible of over-heating, with L.A Noire developers Rockstar making the claims ahead of the games release on Friday.

Apple has reduced the orders for the iPhone 4, prompting the imminent arrival of the next iPhone, with many expecting it to be unveiled by Steve Jobs in the coming months. A new documentary suggests that brand loyalty breeds from a religion-like fervour, particularly toward Apple. Meanwhile, the HTC Sensation is now available to order from Vodafone in the UK.

Posted: 19 May 2011 09:39 AM PDT

iPad gamers to go old school with the iCade

iPad touting gaming fans across the UK can rejoice, the iCade retro gaming machine first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier in the year is to launch on British shores next month priced £79.99.

Set to be officially released via Firebox on June 22nd, the iCade, which looks like an old-school arcade machine whilst acting as an iPad dock that transforms the Apple tablet into a screen for the games unit, will allow gaming fans to enjoy 200 of history’s most memorable gaming classics with the benefit of vintage controls.

Compatible with both the original iPad and the iPad 2, the iCade features the traditional arcade array of joystick and button controls enabling gamers to forgo the tablet’s irksome touchscreen gaming controls and enjoy the arcade games as they were intended to be played.

Having docked their iPad with the iCade, users will need to download the existing Atari Greatest Hits apps for free with game packages available as in game purchases with packs of 4 titles costing 79p. The full selection of 200 games will set users back £7.99.

Will the iCade open up new possibilities in iPad gaming or is it nothing more than a throwback to yesteryear? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Amazon Kindle books now outsells all printed sales

Posted: 19 May 2011 07:48 AM PDT

Kindle books outselling hardbacks in the UK 2:1

Amazon has today announced that it sells more Kindle eBooks that combined sales of both hardback and paperback printed offerings via Amazon.com.

With 2011 Kindle book sales already tripling sales from the same period last year, Amazon has revealed that since April 1st this year Amazon.com has sold 105 Kindle books for everyone 100 printed books it has shifted.

Not limited to the US, less than one year after the UK Kindle Store launched, Amazon.co.uk is reported to now be selling more Kindle books than it does printed hardcover releases. The online retailer proudly proclaimed Kindle books now outsell hardback titles at a ratio of 2:1.

"Customers are now choosing Kindle books more often than print books. We had high hopes that this would happen eventually, but we never imagined it would happen this quickly - we've been selling print books for 15 years and Kindle books for less than four years," announced Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon.com.

He added: “We're grateful to our customers for continuing to make Kindle the bestselling e-reader in the world and the Kindle Store the most popular e-bookstore in the world."

Are you one of the many Kindle adopters, do you now buy more eBooks than printed editions? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 release imminent as iPhone 4 stocks down?

Posted: 19 May 2011 06:50 AM PDT

Reduced Q2 iPhone 4 orders hint at iPhone 5 arrival

Apple’s mooted iPhone 5 could be hear sooner than many expected as new reports claim Apple has lowered second quarter orders of the current iPhone 4 in preparation of its replacements arrival.

Technology blog Digitimes has claimed that “according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers” Apple has lowered its quarterly order of iPhone 4s by more than 2 million units as the Cupertino tech giant lines up the iPhone 5, tipped to be officially called the iPhone 4S, for a June 6th unveiling at the opening of its Worldwide Developers Conference.

With stock levels of the iPhone 4 set to drop in the near future Digitimes, not content with seemingly outing Apple’s iPhone timeline plans, boldly claimed its sources had revealed the iPhone 5 will begin production in August ahead of a September launch whilst “the rear camera will be upgraded to a 8-megapixel resolution model.”

Smartphone retailer Phones4u earlier this week told T3.com that "the iPhone 5 has been delayed until November following an issue with the handset's software.” They later reiterated: “Apple had a software issue with the handset so they are still waiting to fix that up so it will be November when it is coming out.”

When do you think the eagerly awaited iPhone 5 / 4S will land? Let us know your thoughts on the matter via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BlackBerry PlayBook sales top 250,000 in opening month

Posted: 19 May 2011 04:12 AM PDT

RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has racked up strong opening month sales in the US

RIM has sold an estimated 250,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in the device’s opening month on sale in the US and Canada, industry analysts have claimed.

The figures, collected by RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, suggest RIM’s reported 250,000 opening month sales of the PlayBook have matched Motorola’s opening quarter sales of the recently released Motorola Xoom tablet.

Compiling the sales figures from checks conducted on 180 Best Buy stores in the US, a chain responsible for 84 per cent of sales for the 64GB PlayBook offering, Abramsky suggested the BlackBerry tablet, which went on sale in the US and Canada on April 19th ahead of a June 16th UK arrival, could top half a million sales in its opening quarter.

Whilst Research in Motion has yet to make an official announcement regarding opening sales figures for the PlayBook, a spokesperson for the company declared to T3: “we tend to comment on analyst comments unless we think they're outrageously inaccurate,” hinting at a correct prediction by RBC Capital Markets.

The RIM employee added that at present the Canadian tech giant “doesn't have an official figure.”

Will you be snapping up a PlayBook when they hit UK shores on June 16th or is the iPad 2 still the dominant tablet device on your horizon? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Dell Streak Pro 10-inch tablet specs revealed

Posted: 19 May 2011 03:39 AM PDT

Tablet expected to arrive in June this year

Dell has announced it is to release a 10-inch Honeycomb tablet later this summer with specifications for the aptly named the Dell Streak Pro being made available for the first time.

The tablet, which is expected to ship touting Honeycomb version 3.0 of Google's Android operating system, has been tipped to be one of the first devices to come boxed with the update version 3.1 of the tablet-centric OS although such reports are as of yet unconfirmed.

Dell Streak Pro specs that have been confirmed, however, will see the 10-inch tablet sporting a 1280 x 800 resolution screen and integrated storage options of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Prices for the range of Dell tablets have yet to be released by the computer giants.

Other Dell Streak Pro features include a 5-megapixel camera on the back, as well as a front-facing 2-megapixel snapper for video calls. Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity and Wi-Fi options will also come as standard.

Until now, Dell’s Android tablet offerings have failed to make a dent in the market dominance of Apple's iPad and iPad 2, with both the Streak and Streak 7 failing to make an impact in the crowded tablet market.

Dell will be hoping that the Streak Pro, equipped with a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, which the latest Samsung tablets will carry.

Amazon trade-in scheme now accepts electronic devices

Posted: 19 May 2011 03:20 AM PDT

Trade in your old tech tat to earn Amazon store credit

As of today, Amazon has extended the parameters of its trade-in service to include consoles and some other consumer electronic devices, not just software, music and DVDs. Anyone with unused or unwanted tech machinery can now send off the kit to receive an Amazon store gift card in return.

Paul Ryder, vice president of electronics at Amazon said of the adjustment that “The Electronics category is a natural extension and we are delighted to offer our customers more trade-in options.”

He went on to say that Amazon wanted to “customers the opportunity to get great value from their used electronics,” and that “hundreds of thousands of customers have already received millions of dollars in gift cards.”

What can you look to get from your tech? A cursory glance told us that Amazon will dish out £65 in store credit for a 250GB new (slim) Xbox 360 and £46.50 for a slim 120GB PS3. It’s worth noting, though, that our American brethren seem to be able to trade-in more than us. The American version of Amazon’s trade-in scheme lets users send in mobile phones and MP3 players on top of games consoles and software.

Have you used Amazon’s trade-in service before? Let us know what your experience was like on the T3 Twitter feed.

Apple causes "religious" feelings say scientists

Posted: 19 May 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Comments come as part of new BBC documentary.

The Apple faithful have always been known for their blind devotion to the cult of Cupertino. But now it seems such jokey remarks have a scientific basis, with a new BBC documentary discovering Apple fans experience religious feelings when they see iPads, Macs and iPhones.

The show, Secrets of the Superbrands, focused on an Apple product launch in London. One Apple fanatic was then given an MRI scan by neuroscientists having been exposed to kit and marketing from Jobs and co.

"The results suggested that Apple was actually stimulating the same parts of the brain as religious imagery does in people of faith,” said series producers Alex Riley and Adam Boone.

You can watch Secrets of the Superbrands now on BBC iPlayer. As well as Apple, the show also focuses on Microsoft, Google and Nokia.

PS3 update causing consoles to overheat?

Posted: 19 May 2011 02:11 AM PDT

Problems keep piling up for Sony.

Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update, 3.61, is causing consoles to overheat and switch themselves off. That’s the word from Rockstar games, which says it’s heard from gamers playing LA Noire that their consoles have given up the ghost mid-game.

In a blogpost, Rockstar said, "Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or 'Red Lighting' after having installed 3.61. This can range from games randomly freezing to PS3s turning off anywhere between 30 mins use to two hours. We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed."

Rockstar said most complaints it had had centred on the older, larger PS3. Gamers told the developer that their consoles would beep three times while playing new 5 star title LA Noire, before powering down.

Sony said it doesn’t, “…comment on rumour or speculation”. But with this update released to pave the way for the return of PSN, surely it’s only a matter of time before it’s forced to respond.

Has your PS3 overheated since you installed firmware 3.61? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

HTC Flyer: boss "feeling good" about slate sales

Posted: 19 May 2011 01:02 AM PDT

Interview with Reuters sees head of HTC Europe talk up future plans.

HTC’s European chief Florian Seiche has said he’s confident about the success of the newly-released HTC Flyer, and that he thinks tablets will boom over the coming years in ways we can only imagine.

Asked by Reuters about the Flyer, Seiche said, “It's early days but we feel very good about it.” Seiche added, “"I really believe that the tablet market is really going to be a big market in the future and this is just the start. In five years' time, schools will have tablets probably instead of physical notebooks. I think that's going to be such a massive wave of additional penetration in society. I think we can't even guess the potential."

HTC Flyer video

HTC is said to already be priming two more tablets for releases this summer, each rocking a Flyer-beating 10-inch screen. Hopefully Android Honeycomb will come along for the ride. The Flyer is currently limited to the smartphone-centric Android Gingerbread.

Seiche also said that HTC remains committed to Windows Phone 7, saying Microsoft’s deal with Nokia means the platform will help it gain more mainstream attention. What’s more, he promised that HTC would have a phone packing in NFC in the next 12 months.

PSN password problem fixed says Sony

Posted: 18 May 2011 11:40 PM PDT

Mandatory password reset page was pulled over hacking fears.

Sony says it has fixed the password problem which once again caused its PlayStation Network to falter. The Big S prevented sign-in to PSN on its websites when it became clear that hackers could use information stolen in the service’s recent breach to change users’ passwords.

Sony’s Communications boss Patrick Seybold took to the official PlayStation blog last night, saying, “We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.”

“Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.”

The PSN relaunch hasn’t been without its difficulties. The Japanese government refused to allow PSN to go back online until Sony had made clear how it would prevent such an attack from ever happening again. This password niggle has provided an unwelcome distraction as well. News of this latest update follows Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer’s vigorous defence of Sony’s handling of the crisis.

Apple iCloud: music labels signed up

Posted: 18 May 2011 11:23 PM PDT

Deals mean streaming service is imminent.

Apple’s iCloud music streaming service has edged closer to reality, with “music industry sources” telling Cnet that Cupertino has signed a licensing deal with EMI. Warner Music has already put pen to paper, with the sources claiming Universal and Sony will sign on the dotted line next week.

That means Apple could well reveal iCloud at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which starts on 6 June in San Francisco. The event is this year focused on Mac OS X and iOS, but with the iPhone 5 not expected to be launched, surely iCloud will be the “one last thing” announced during the opening keynote speech.

The deals with all four major labels will give Apple a major lead on Google and Amazon, both of whom have recently launched cloud storage and streaming service without label approval. Their services allow punters to store their own tunes in the cloud and stream them to phones and PCs, but do not have Spotify-style access to millions of tracks.

Today’s news follows chatter yesterday about Apple’s search for a “Media Streaming Engineer” to look after its iCloud service. Stay tuned for more on this story on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
