BlackBerry Torch 2 leaked ahead of official release

Posted: 26 May 2011 09:17 AM PDT

RIM refuse to comment on the speculation about the BlackBerry Torch 2

Following BlackBerry’s success with the Bold Touch 9900, RIM is set to announce the release for its second generation Torch, new leaks suggest.

Images have surfaced on the internet, albeit not the best of quality, showing the new Torch 2 ahead of its anticipated release later this year.

A spokesperson for RIM said: “RIM doesn’t comment on rumour or speculation” in a short interview with T3.

There has already been a batch of images on the internet, seemingly showing the BlackBerry Touch but RIM declined to comment on their authenticity.

If rumours are correct the device will sport a metal back opposed to its usual crosshatched glass. Further specification has giving the Torch 2 a 1.2Ghz processor, 512MB of RAM, and Bluetooth 2.1. It is thought the handset will ship with the latest BlackBerry 7 OS designed for the greater processing power of the 1.2Ghz chip.

Will the Torch 2 put BlackBerry at the top of the smartphone world? Are the rumours true? Tell us your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 trailer: London controversy

Posted: 26 May 2011 06:41 AM PDT

Ban called on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has caused controversy almost six months before it is due to be released after the first gameplay trailer outed footage reminiscent of the London 7/7 Tube bombings.

Having been officially unveiled in the US on Monday before being fired around the web, the tantalising first look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sees Activision out aspects of the game’s plot including location previews from levels set in New York, Paris, Berlin and London.

Depicting images of an attack on a London Tube train as well as gunfire surrounding Westminster and the Houses of Parliament, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 trailer has been met with uproar as supporters of those affected by the terrorist attacks that hit London in 2005 call for the game to be banned.

Further spurring the controversial views, the Daily Mail has referred to Activision’s upcoming addition to the Call of Duty franchise as “An ultra-violent computer game which features explosions and scenes of destruction on the London Tube and at the Houses of Parliament.”

Is the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 London Tube attack an appalling display of bad taste or nothing more than a theatrical look on the potential horrors of modern life? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

London to become 'electric car capital of Europe'

Posted: 26 May 2011 04:58 AM PDT

Source London scheme adds 150 charging points to the capital

London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced a new scheme, called Source London that is set to add 150 charging points for electric cars around England's capital city.

Electric cars have failed to make a full impact on the motoring industry due to fears that batteries will need recharging after 100 miles, and the minimal number of charging points around the cities such as London could leave drivers stranded without access to “fuel”.

"I want to rapidly accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles and make London the epicentre of electric driving in Europe," said London Mayor Boris Johnson.

He continued: "One of the biggest hurdles to greater use of electric vehicles has been a lack of charging points. But now Londoners will see Source London points popping up in locations all over the capital.”

The Source London scheme will increase the number of points from approximately 250 to around 400, with future objectives targeting 1,300 by 2013; a feat that would put Londoners to within one mile of a charging point at any time.

Owners of electric cars are to pay a membership of £100 annually, giving them infinite access to charging points across the capital, with prospects of collaborating with the East of England project.

2011 has been sighted as the breakthrough year for electric cars with Nissan, Mitsubshi, Vauxhall, Toyota and Renault all planning to release an electric car.

Are electric cars the future? Would you run an electric car in the capital? Let us know via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook to hit Three

Posted: 26 May 2011 04:28 AM PDT

Google's Chromebook series begins with Samsung's model, coming to the UK in June

Samsung’s Chrome Series 5 notebook, the first advocate of the latest Google OS, focusing on “Cloud based” storage, is to be launched through Three, the network provider has revealed.

The Samsung Chromebook is set to land sporting a 12.1-inch display and is supported by an Intel Atom processor. It boasts both WiFi and 3G connectivity options and has a full-sized keyboard and trackpad whilst touting 2 USB ports and a HD webcam.

Three has announced that it will offer the Chromebook sometime in June, with the device also to be made available on Amazon from June 15th.

Chromebooks are web-based devices that run Google’s new Chrome OS, utilising cloud-based storage that leaves the laptops requiring less internal memory storage.

The “cloud” acts as your hard drive; saving your files to the ether. All applications, including GoogleDocs and a vast variety of Chrome applications also run directly through the connected browser.

Do you think Chromebooks will revolutionise the laptop market? Will you be buying the Samsung Chrome Series 5? Let us know via our Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy S II beats Apple iPhone 4 in UK charts

Posted: 26 May 2011 04:03 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S II lands as the UK's most popular smartphone

Samsung has topped the UK smartphone sales charts as its newly released Samsung Galaxy S II device topples Apple’s iPhone 4 to become the highest selling handset of the past month as HTC and Android dominate the top 10.

Taking the top spot from last month’s leading handset, Apple’s iPhone 4, the Samsung Galaxy S II combines an impressive 1.2GHz dual-core processor with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display for impeccable content output.

Add to this 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera with Full HD 1080p video recording capabilities and a second 2-megapixel forward-facing snapper as well as Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread mobile operating system and you have a dominant force in the mobile market.

“Samsung has leapfrogged Apple and HTC's best handsets this month with its Galaxy S II deservedly stealing a march. With a number of great deals being offered by networks and retailers, this powerful and slick Android smartphone could be around and dominating the chart for a while,” proclaimed Ernest Doku of uSwitch.

With Samsung’s Android powerhouse taking the month’s smartphone top spot, Android’s hugely popular OS went on to dominate the top ten claiming eight of the leading sports interrupted only by Apple’s iPhone 4 in second and RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 8520 in ninth. Of these Android device, five were HTC branded with the original Samsung Galaxy S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc the remaining two device to make the top ten.

"HTC and Android are still big winners this month, with HTC claiming half of the Top 10 handsets and Android now powering 80% of the chart,” said Doku. “This really stokes the fire in the manufacturer wars, which is set to intensify with an amazing selection of mobiles.  This could include iPhone’s oft-rumoured follow up – due to launch in the coming months.”

What is your handset of the month of May; does the Samsung Galaxy S II tick all your boxes? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google Wallet NFC mobile payment system set to launch

Posted: 26 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Summer arrival for contactless payment system

A leaked memo suggests that Google will introduce a mobile payment system at an event in New York today, which will be called 'Google Wallet'.

The reveal comes courtesy of a memo from the Container Store, which claims Google will announce retailers who will be participating in the service that will enable users to walk into a store and pay for items with their smartphone.

A summer rollout by Google is also revealed, although the Container Store will states that it will be using the system on September 1st.

Google started trials of its NFC payment system earlier this year in the US and was reported to have got US bank Citigroup and MasterCard on board for the service.

With NFC tech already inbuilt into the Samsung Nexus S, Nokia and RIM have both vowed to implement the near field communication technology in future devices.

It is likely that Google Wallet will land in the US before anywhere else, but we'll be sure to keep you posted on any details of a UK launch.

Would you use a mobile wallet? Or do you think it’s too risky? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone app news: Orange launches Glastonbury app

Posted: 26 May 2011 03:29 AM PDT

Sounds fantastic, but will your battery last long enough to make use of it?

Orange has launched the official smartphone app for Glastonbury 2011, which will allow festivalgoers to meticulously plan their band-viewing activities on their iPhone, Android or Nokia handset.

The free app features a comprehensive listing of the acts on show complete with the stage on which they're appearing. If you see something you like, you can add it to the planner section.

And, to ensure that you don't miss a shaggy-haired indie-rock sensation of tomorrow, you'll be sent a reminder, can share it on Facebook or even see where the corresponding stage is on an interactive map.

At any point during the festival, you can click on a stage on the map and it'll tell you exactly what's happening at that time. The map will not only guide you to stages, but also bars and toilets, which sort of walk hand-in-hand together when you think about it.

The only potential downfall of Orange's masterplan is that our smartphone batteries don't usually last beyond the first hangover, and in order to preserve them, that 3G connection is more often than not, the first thing to be sacrifices. Luckily Orange has thought about that too, as the map will guide you to the "Chill and Charge" tents, if you need a top up.

There'll also be a festival news feed from, you guessed it, The Guardian. The app is available to download now and certainly beat splashing out a fiver on one of those festival guide laminates that you'll lose within the first half an hour.

You can get a good look at the app from a quirky young Irishman in this preview video.

HTC Puccini tablet: summer release say sources

Posted: 26 May 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Digitimes reports that Honeycomb tablet is getting ever closer

The HTC Puccini, the Taiwanese tech titan’s much-mooted 10.1-inch Android Honeycomb tablet, remains in line for a summer release. That’s if supply chain sources speaking to Digitimes are on the money.

The insiders claim that HTC has ordered thousands of 10.1-inch displays, with the slate now in its final testing phase. They say full scale production will start in June, suggesting a late summer release date.

Word is it’ll come with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm chip, as well as being compatible with the digital pen currently found on sale alongside the 7-inch HTC Flyer. Android 3.0.1 will be working overtime under the hood.

What this means for the Android Gingerbread-packing Flyer is unclear. All we know is that with HTC’s smartphone rep continually reaching new heights, the Puccini promises to be one hell of a device when it does finally launch.

MACDefender virus: new variant found

Posted: 26 May 2011 01:00 AM PDT

Latest version will cause more worries at Cupertino.

The MACDefender malware virus, which has been hitting Mac OS X devices in recent weeks, has a new variant that doesn’t require an admin password to be installed on Apple-made machines.

The news comes from antivirus company Intego. In an official blog post, the company said, “Since any user with an administrator's account - the default if there is just one user on a Mac - can install software in the Applications folder, a password is not needed. This package installs an application - the downloader - named avRunner, which then launches automatically. At the same time, the installation package deletes itself from the user's Mac, so no traces of the original installer are left behind.”

MACDefender disguises itself as a piece of antivirus software, leading users to believe they are protecting their computer. Intego says that a new version called MacGuard is also out in the wild, advising Apple users to be extra vigilant.

Apple has said that it is releasing an update for OS X in “the coming days”, which will remove any currently know versions of MACDefender from the operating system. It’s also given advice on how to remove malware manually. It’s unclear if this new variant will be removed as part of Cupertino’s clean up.

Has MACDefender affected you? Tell us your story now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Spotify and Facebook in music streaming deal

Posted: 25 May 2011 11:40 PM PDT

Forbes reports that new tie-up will bring even deeper Spotify and Facebook integration.

Spotify and Facebook are said to close to launching a new music streaming service which will allow users of the social network to listen to tracks with friends simultaneously and even play tracks through their Facebook homepage.

News of the deal comes from Forbes, which says, “…sources close to the deal,” have told it that the offering could be live in just two weeks. The tie-up will see a Spotify icon appear on the Facebook homepage, from where users can automatically launch the music app and get sharing their love of everything from ropey Freddie Mercury solo remixes to relevant Brooklyn types Cults. The package will either be called Facebook Music or Spotify on Facebook.

Of course, Facebook and Spotify already have a partnership, which allows users of the music service to share playlists via its desktop app. But this appears to make the marriage more permanent, and will add credence to rumours that Spotify is getting near to bringing the services to the United States.

Neither Facebook and Spotify were willing to comment on the report. But with Apple expected to launch its own iTunes Cloud service at the start of June, don’t be surprised to see these two big rivals take the fight to Cupertino soon.

Would you use a Facebook streaming service? Let us know what you think of the deal on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

PSN: Sony rolls out free ID theft protection

Posted: 25 May 2011 11:25 PM PDT

No word on when UK gamers will be let in on the action.

Following its epic PSN outage, Sony said that it would be offering free identity theft protection to gamers hit by the hacking crisis. And now it’s come good on its promise, giving US PlayStation users the chance to sign up for AllClear ID Plus for free.

To get the coverage, users need to head over to the official PlayStation site and hand over their email address to security firm Debix, who will then send an activation code out. That needs to be redeemed by 28 June in order to activate the service.

The deal is for 12 months and has been stumped up for by Sony as part of its apology for allowing hackers to break into their system. Gamers get ID theft insurance of up to $1 million, as well as expert help from fraud specialists if their identity is compromised.

Is this enough to sate angry PlayStation gamers? And should Sony be working on a similar offering on these shores? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
