TechToday: YouTube movie rentals, Playboy on iPad latest

Posted: 09 May 2011 01:24 PM PDT

The tech news that broke after you logged-off.

Playboy for iPad isn't an app
When Hugh Hefner told the world that a complete and uncensored Playboy for iPad was coming on May 18th, many felt that Steve Jobs had had a change of heart over his anti-porn stance. Well it turns out that Playboy is just launching an optimised website that'll make its content viewable on the iPad's Safari browser. However, for $8-a-month you'll get access to the complete Playboy archive.

YouTube going after movie streaming coin
3,000 new movie titles will be added to YouTube's movie rentals service from today as the Google-owned company looks to take on the likes of Apple, Netflix and Sony (the latter might not be too hard these days).  Sony,  Warner and Universal will provide the ammunition. Hopefully a UK launch won't be too far away either.

It was revealed today in The Sun that the Queen has requested an iPad 2, after she saw her grandsons William and Harry touting their new Apple tablets. The 85-year-old Monarch has received a crash course in the slim lined iPad 2 from the newly wed and his brother after they took their new tablets over to Buckingham Palace. Apple also took a crown from Google today after being proclaimed the world's most valuable brand. Apple is worth £25bn more than it's Android touting rival.

If you love to stay connected with friends over the social networking site Facebook, it might be worth considering putting a preorder in for one of HTC's new Facebook phones. The HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa are available from June 26th, and feature dedicated Facebook buttons and deep social networking integration. Elsewhere in the world of smartphones, more details were revealed today about the new Mango OS update for Windows 7 phones. So far we know it will bring much-needed multi-tasking to the OS, as well as a Bing Maps feature offering turn-by-turn guidance – currently offered by both iOS and Android. There will also be Shazam-style song tagging via Bing Audio, and scanning of QR codes, barcodes and text, thanks to a new Bing Video feature.

Call of Duty fans are becoming even more excited following the appearance of a teaser in the Official PlayStation Magazine hinting to a release next month of Modern Warfare 3. The magazine's ‘Next month’ preview page displayed a huge number three followed by the simple tagline “The biggest game in the world returns.” Meanwhile, Sony continues to get to grips with security issues over it's online network. Despite telling gamers it would be up by the weekend, services are still offline while the technology giant wrangles with testing the gaming network. Sony has also revealed that hackers posted user details on a website, but these have now been removed.

Android app news: doubleTwist adds AirPlay

Posted: 09 May 2011 10:26 AM PDT

Android fans get in on the AirPlay action.

Android phone owners will now be able to stream music, videos and photos to their Apple TV box thanks to a new piece of functionality added to the doubleTwist media player app.

The doubleTwist AirSync app for Android brings all of your favourite smartphone content to the Apple TV in the same way that iOS users are able to easily stream to their set-top companion.

The app already features the ability to stream content to your PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, while pairing with your Mac and PC for easy access to that content.

The app is free to download, but if you want to add the AirPlay streaming then it'll cost you a one-off, in-app fee of $5 (£2.99) and then you're all set for AirPlay and integration with your iTunes library.

Of course, videos, photos and music all have to be in an Apple friendly format, like MP4, but the doubleTwist app is already a massive favourite and this is just going to increase its repuation as the best Android media player out there.

HTC 10-inch tablet leaks online with healthy spec sheet

Posted: 09 May 2011 09:34 AM PDT

10-inch HTC Puccini tablet to take on Xoom and iPad

Images of an upcoming 10-inch HTC tablet and three new HTC smartphones have leaked online ahead of the devices’ official unveiling.

The rendered shots have landed via PocketNow with the seemingly uninspiring glossed black products coming to life through a series of impressive claimed specs that have been unveiled alongside the advanced imagery.

With the 7-inch HTC Flyer to hit UK markets later this month with little fanfare the outed 10-inch HTC tablet, dubbed the Puccini, could mark the smartphone company’s first real efforts at knocking Apple’s iPad and iPad 2 devices off their lofty perch.

Reportedly set to support the same HTC Scribe stylus that is to come boxed with the Flyer, the 10-inch Puccini is to support the high-speed 4G networks in the US and tout Android’s tablet centric Gingerbread OS from launch. Predicted release dates and pricing for the mooted device remain a mystery.

Could a 10-inch HTC tablet truly challenge the likes of the iPad atop the tablet tree? Let us know what you think and stay tuned for all the latest on the Puccini via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The Queen requests staff buy her an iPad 2

Posted: 09 May 2011 08:38 AM PDT

HRH asks for an iPad to ease long trips

The Queen has asked her staff to buy her an iPad 2 after she saw her grandsons, Princes William and Harry touting their Apple tablets, British tabloid The Sun has revealed.

Both Princes are reported to have given the 85-year-old Monarch a crash course in the slim lined iPad 2 having taken their new tablets over to Buckingham Palace in recent weeks with The Queen now looking to add one of Apple’s latest portable devices to her extensive gadget haul.

"The Queen has a mobile phone as well as the iPods, so an iPad is the logical progression. She thinks it will be great to keep her entertained on all the long trips she has to make,” said The Sun’s Royal insider source.

“She was particularly taken with how easy it was to use, the large screen and how light it was. For a woman of her age, she is very switched on. It was only a matter of time before she asked someone to go and get her one."

The source close to the Royal family also divulged that “The Princes think it is hilarious. They love the fact that their gran wants an iPad and think she's really cool."

Apple’s second-generation iPad launched in the UK back in March with the market dominating tablet adding a dual-core processor, dual cameras to its newly streamlined form factor.

Latest Google Doodle celebrates Mr Men creator

Posted: 09 May 2011 04:54 AM PDT

Google's ever changing Doodle has a habit of putting a smile on our faces...

Who can forget the magical yet unexplained flying balls, the playable Pacman game, or most recently the silent video dedicated to the late, great Charlie Chaplin?

The Google Doodle smile train continues today with the search giant returning us all to memories of our childhood in celebration of the 76th birthday of Roger Hargreaves, the English author and illustrator who created the Mr Men books.

Users can refresh the home page to see no less than 16 doodles, with images ranging from Mr Forgetful to Little Miss Tiny.

The story of the Mr Men books came from the creator's son Adam Hargreaves asking what a tickle looked like. His father drew a figure with a round orange body and long arms, giving birth to the now loved and globally known Mr Tickle.

Sadly Roger Hargreaves died from a stroke in 1988 at the age of 53, with son Adam taking the reigns of the Mr Men empire which continues to put smiles on children's faces all over the World.

Everyone's favourite stories have also been adapted into four animated television series, the most recent of which aired on Channel 5 in 2008 and 2009. A movie is apparently rumoured to be in the pipeline.

Samsung Galaxy S II racks up 3 million global pre-orders

Posted: 09 May 2011 04:45 AM PDT

Samsung expecting huge Galaxy S II sales

Samsung has officially announced that its latest flagship handset, the Samsung Galaxy S II, has received more than three million pre-orders around the world.

Having launched in the UK on May 1st, the Samsung Galaxy S II has piqued interest with wannabe smartphone owners across the globe placing orders for the device that boasts a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a stunning 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display.

Emulating the success of its predecessor, a handset that notched up 10 million sales in its opening six months, Samsung unveiled the pre-order figures for the Galaxy S II after it emerged the device had received 120,000 pre-orders in the company’s native South Korea.

Following news of its rocketing pre-order figures fears have arisen over stock shortages and failure to meet demand of the smartphone that almost hosts an 8-megapixel camera with Full HD 1080p video recording credentials and Google’s Android 2.3 mobile operating system.

Looking to quell concerns Samsung has announced via Flickr: "There are quite a few demands in some countries to ask for preferred orders for the supply of Galaxy S II. We will do our utmost best to ensure that all the global demands should be met as quickly as possible."

Can the Samsung Galaxy S II dominate the smartphone market or will the likes of the HTC Sensation and mooted Apple iPhone 5 take the crown? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony delays relaunch of Playstation Network

Posted: 09 May 2011 04:17 AM PDT

Sony delays restoring online network as user information start to leak onto the internet

Sony has disappointed gamers once again by delaying the relaunch of the PlayStation Network following a security breach which led to the theft of personal data from 100 million online accounts.

The company, which had planned to reopen online services by the weekend, is apparently still busy testing newly installed security measures to ensure that the network is protected against any future attacks.

Speaking in a blog, Sony said: "We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing,"

"We won't restore the services until we can test the system's strength in these respects."

Last week, Sony Chief Executive Sir Howard Stringer said that "to date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely."

However, over the weekend Sony admitted that it had found a website containing some 2,500 names and partial mailing addresses of US customers who took part in a completion in 2001. Sony said that it immediately removed the information and was busy removing any links to the site.

"The website was out-of-date and inactive when discovered as part of the continued attacks on Sony," it said in a statement.

The embarrassing find follows criticism of Sony taking two days to contact Police about the cyber attack and over a week before it informed gamers of the situation. CEO Sir Howard has been busy blogging on the company's website in an attempt to cool tensions, telling gamers that the tech giant is working on new security measures to "protect your information better than ever”.

The company has also offered compensation to US PlayStation Network and Qriocity users in the form of a year-long free identity protection programme, which includes a $1 million (£608,000) identity theft insurance policy for each user against any future cyber-attacks.

Can Sony's reputation ever be restored following the attack? Get involved in the conversation on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Samsung topple LG from large 3DTV mantle

Samsung has officially unveiled a 75-inch 3DTV monster with the behemoth of extra dimensional broadcasts taking the title as the world’s largest LED-backlit 3D LCD HDTV.

Taking the short-lived crown from LG’s 72-inch offering, the Samsung D9500 240Hz display boasts the company’s usual Smart TV credentials and comes equipped with a pair of the usual active shutter 3D specs.

Set to go on sale in the company’s native South Korea by the end of the month the 75-inch D9500 is to land with a price tag to match its impressive size with those after huge 3D footage needing to part with ₩19,000,000 (£10,800).

Allowing for improved use of the system’s online services the Samsung D9500 is to come packaged with a handy remote that features a flip out QWERTY keyboard.

Is 75-inch too excessive for a home 3DTV setup or is it simply the bigger the better? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Windows Phone 7.5 update to bring turn-by-turn guidance

Posted: 09 May 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Autumn update will bring a bag of new tricks

We know that the Mango update to Windows Phone 7 is set to bring a host of features necessary for the platform to stay afloat - the OTA update, set for Autumn, will bring much-needed multi-tasking to the OS – but what else is in store?

New details leaking out across the web reveal that Mango will also add a couple of tasty additions to Bing. Most notably, Bing Maps will be able to offer turn-by-turn guidance – a feature currently offered by both iOS and Android. There will also be Shazam-style song tagging via Bing Audio, and scanning of QR codes, barcodes and text, thanks to a new Bing Video feature.

There will also be the option to dictate text messages and emails. All of these features, as well as the aforementioned multi-tasking and the now-available copy & paste functionality, are ones currently available on other platforms, but it’s good to know that patient WP7 owners will soon be in ownership of a mobile platform just as capable as the competition.

You Tube hits 20% of all UK social networking visits

Posted: 08 May 2011 12:30 PM PDT

Video streaming service is now the UK's third most visited website after Facebook and Google

You Tube, the hugely popular video sharing website, now accounts for one in five visits to social networks from the UK's internet users. That’s up from one in six visits just 12 months ago.

Although it’s a long way from catching Facebook, which makes up more than half of the visits to social networks, You Tube’s growth has been mighty impressive.

It is the fastest growing social network for the second consecutive month and in the last three years has climbed from the eighth biggest website in the UK to cementing the number three spot, after overtaking Hotmail in December 2010. The top two destinations are unsurprisingly taken up by Facebook and Google.

You Tube is on a roll at the moment. It is preparing to launch its movie-on-demand service charging viewers to screen the latest blockbusters as soon as they're released on DVD, and a few days ago, it announced a record 72 million live streams for the Royal Wedding. The glittering ceremony was broadcast to 188 countries.

iPad 2 light leakage down to faulty LG panels?

Posted: 08 May 2011 04:04 AM PDT

Apple's runaway tablet is still posting hugely impressive sales figures in comparison to rivals

Although there’s been no official word from Apple on the matter, it is thought that a defect in the LCD panels LG made for the iPad 2 has contributed to a backlog in shipments of the sought-after tablet.

Digitimes reported that complaints from customers of light seeping in from the edges of the iPad 2 display were caused by defective LG panels. It was also suggested that the company had been forced to temporarily handover the majority of the manufacturing to LG’s biggest rival, Samsung.

According to figures recently released, Samsung shipped four million of the 9.7-inch panels, whereas LG produced only 800,000 units after being forced to put production on hold in order to clear up any quality issues.

The report also says that once the problem was resolved LG displays made a swift return to the Apple supply chain in the second quarter.

Still this issue doesn’t seem to have irrevocably dented the massive uptake of the tablet, as Apple posted sales of 4.69m iPad units during the first quarter of 2011. Those figures were markedly down on the 7.33m units shipped in the final quarter of 2010 during the peak holiday sales season, but part of the dip could be attributed to consumers holding off and waiting for the iPad 2, which was launched in March.

As Sony’s crisis management machine continues to search for answers, sources familiar with the matter say the Tokyo based tech-giant is mulling offering a reward to anyone with information which could help unveil the hackers responsible for the unprecedented PlayStation Network security breach, which could have affected 100 million users.

With the PlayStation Network (PSN) still offline after the cyber-attacks, the option of a sizeable bounty shows how seriously the company are taking the matter, and how desperate they are to catch the miscreants before any more damage is done to their reputation.

If Sony presses ahead, it will reportedly do so with the full backing of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world, who could find the data breach within their jurisdiction.

In an address to the US Congress about the matter, Sony said it was still in the dark about the identities of the hackers that infiltrated the PSN, and stole the personal and financial data of its users.

There are suggestions that Sony feels the security breach has the fingerprints of the infamous hackers Anonymous all over it, saying that they found files labelled “Anonymous” and “We are legion” (an Anonymous slogan), on their servers. Unsurprisingly, no one at the group has admitted culpability for the hack, however, they’ve fallen short of a flat denial.

With Sony’s share price sliding, consumer trust dipping and government agencies pressing for answers, it would surprise no one if Sony Chief Executive Sir Howard Stringer and the companies board gave the go-ahead in order to get people spilling the beans. With the hacking community just as susceptible to the lure of serious lucre, as anyone else, don’t be surprised if the identities of the PSN hackers are exposed sooner than later.

How much money will Sony have to cough up to get answers from the hacking community? Get involved in the conservation on our Twitter and Facebook pages.
