Apple celebrated yet another milestone today after it hosted its 500,000th app in its App store. A UK store confirmed they would supply their students with an iPad 2, as it looks to lead the way in education.

Stream sports online: 49 per cent admit illegal activity Posted: 25 May 2011 05:48 AM PDT
Study shows that nearly half of men don't pay to watch sports
Almost half of men admit that they had, at some point, streamed sports illegally online, a new report has revealed with 49 per cent of men questioned owning up to the illegal activity.
A further 17 per cent of men involved in the study said they had never paid to watch live sport.
Football was the most commonly streamed sport, accounting for 76 per cent of all online sport watching activity, whilst 57 per cent and 42 per cent of those questioned said they watched rugby and boxing illegally online respectively.
With costs soaring for sports packages, people are opting to watch it illegally opposed to paying the high prices for home viewing. Predictably price was the main reason behind men using the web to watch sports with 84 per cent giving it as their explanation.
Sky has attempted to change the way you can view sports, and with the evolution of HD and more recently 3D the media-giants are hoping to offer a service that the online community cannot provide.
Do you think sports packages are too expensive? Would you ever stream sports online? Will HD and 3D help Sky in the future? Tell us your toughts via Twitter and Facebook.

Could tablets replace textbooks? We certainly hope so. Technology has crept its way into every facet of our lives, for the better. Education meanwhile has appeared reluctant to embrace the gains technology can bring.

Android app news: Tesco shopping trolley satnav Posted: 25 May 2011 03:52 AM PDT
Always spending half an hour looking for the Cadbury's Mini Rolls? Tesco comes to the rescue with Android sat-nav app. Tesco has announced that it is trialing a satnav application for your shopping trolley to enable you to find items from your shopping list more easily.
The Android-only app will guide shoppers around a map of the store using the GPS signal on your smartphone and calculate the shortest and fastest route to picking up all of the items on your shopping list.
All you need to do is make the list on your handset before you enter the store and the app will do the rest. It'll even allow you to send a list to friends so they can do your shopping for you.
The app is being trialed at one Tesco Extra store in with a view to rolling it out nationwide if it proves to be popular among shoppers. It'll be interesting to see just how accurate the application is. You'd have to assume that in order to be that precise, Tesco must be placing GPS receivers all over the store.
You can't currently download the app on the Android Marketplace, you'll need to join a testing group via the Tesco technology blog.

New Barnes & Noble Nook revealed Posted: 25 May 2011 03:15 AM PDT
Kindle-rival all set to make eReader battle even more feisty. US book store Barnes & Noble has pulled the wrappers off of its latest Nook eReader. And the updated device looks as if it has more than enough to give the Amazon Kindle a run for its money.
The new Nook costs the same $139 (£86) as the previous, Wi-Fi only version. It comes with a full touchscreen eInk display, which Barnes & Noble says has a 50 per cent improved contrast ratio.
The screen measures just 6.5-inches, with the idea being that it can be easily slipped into a jacket pocket. There’s room for 1,000 books, with SD expansion for adding more. Word is the battery will keep going for a frankly insane two months.
This is bound to give Amazon pause for thought. But with a Kindle Tablet and Kindle touchscreen eReader on the cards, it won’t be long before it fires back. For more on this and the rest of the day’s gadget news, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

UK 4G: BT to trial wireless LTE tech later this year Posted: 25 May 2011 02:58 AM PDT
Pioneering trial set to bring high-speed internet to the masses Despite the technology having been available to consumers in the US for a couple of years, 4G still hasn’t found its way to the UK in any tangible sense yet. BT and Everything Everywhere seem keen to change that, though, as the two companies have just announced a joint trial of wireless 4G in the UK.
The three-month trial will take place in Cornwall, an area with a large amount of so-called broadband ‘not-spots’, from September 2011. 200 homes will be asked to take part, with the aim being to see if it’s feasible to send LTE (Long Term Evolution) 4G broadband to the entire UK.

Apple given access to unreleased Samsung gadgets Posted: 25 May 2011 02:17 AM PDT
Move is part of wide-ranging legal battle between the two tech giants. Having slapped Samsung with a lawsuit claiming the Korean company’s Galaxy line ripped off the, “…technology, user interface and innovative style,” of its iOS devices, Apple has now been granted early access to five Samsung products which have yet to be released. The move is designed to see if Apple wants to proceed with an injunction to prevent the Samsung kit’s release.
The ruling, handed down by a Federal Judge in San Jose, means Samsung must give Apple phones including the Galaxy S2, Infuse 4G and Droid Charge, as well as the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1. All these devices have been trailed extensively, but are yet to hit shelves.
Samsung had argued that this kit was not yet final and that Apple would not be able to sufficiently conclude if any infringements had been made. The judge threw this argument out, after pointing out the Samsung had given away 5,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1s at Google I/O earlier this month.
The Koreans have 30 days to give Apple the gear. While Apple is unlikely to seek an injunction, this proves that this is one big time tech lawsuit that’s only going to get more intense as the weeks and months pass. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

2011's hottest game so far looks like it's just the beginning. LA Noire 2 is looking like a dead cert after the boss of publisher Take Two talked up the best-selling title’s franchise credentials. During a call with investors, CEO Strauss Zelnick said, “We have every reason to believe that LA Noire is another strong franchise for this company. We do see this as a powerful new franchise."
Zelnick added that sales of LA Noire had been “exceedingly strong”, despite the game only being on shelves for less than a week. It’s been critically lauded for its in-depth storyline, stunning graphics and facial-tracking, which makes characters more realistic than ever.
The chances of a sequel coming sooner rather than later have already been talked up by developer Team Bondi, which said a new version of the game wouldn’t take as long to make as the original. LA Noire took seven years to complete.
How are you getting on with LA Noire? Is it every bit as good as the critics say? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iOS 5 not heading to iPhone 3GS Posted: 24 May 2011 11:42 PM PDT
Eldar Murtazin's tweet suggests Apple is looking to cut iPhone 3GS out of the loop. Apple will not be making iOS 5 available for the iPhone 3GS, leaving millions of users stranded on iOS 4 when the update launches later this year. That’s according to renowned mobile watcher Eldar Murtazin, who tweeted the news yesterday.
His missive on Twitter read, “Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3GS wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will.” Murtazin has a strong reputation when it comes to inside rumours about the mobile industry. He called the Nokia/Microsoft tie-up when most thought such a deal was an impossibility.
Such a move by Apple would risk alienating many older users, but Cupertino will be banking on users of the two-year-old 3GS coming to the end of their contracts and upgrading to the new iPhone 5.
The iPhone 3G initially worked with iOS 4 last summer, but following a series of problems which caused devices to become slow and unresponsive, Apple pulled support with its iOS 4.3 update.
Is Apple making the right move? Or is it at risk of annoying millions of people who are already inside its vast mobile ecosystem? Share your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

TomTom GO LIVE 800 series launched Posted: 24 May 2011 11:27 PM PDT
HD Traffic, voice control and hands-free calling all built into new high-end GPS. TomTom has just got official with its new TomTom GO LIVE 800 series satnavs. There are two new mapping solutions, the GO LIVE 820 and GO LIVE 825, each one preloaded with the Dutch mapping maven’s connected services that make driving a doddle.
TomTom’s HD traffic solution, which tells you where jams are and the best way to avoid them, is on board, as is the QuickGPSfix feature for getting a lock on your location quick smart. Add in hands-free Bluetooth calling, TomTom Weather for local and five day forecasts, as well as a Live Search tool for points of interest, and you’re looking at a specced up mapper aiming to give free offerings Nokia Maps and Google Maps Navigation a run for their money.
The GO LIVE 825 rocks a massive 5-inch screen, while its 520 stablemate’s display is pared back to a still impressive 4.3-inches. Each one works with TomTom’s flip mount screen and uses an accelerometer so it can be rotated 180 degrees, so you don’t need to worry about sticking it the right way up on your windscreen.
The Live services on the new GO LIVE series are valid for one year before you have to stump up to renew them. The GO LIVE 825 is set to cost £229.99 and is landing this month. The GO LIVE 520 is yet to be priced, but expect it to be a touch cheaper when it launches in September.
Enough to make you buy a new TomTom? Or have standalone satnavs had their day in the age of the smartphone? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
