Arqiva to shut down SeeSaw in a month

Posted: 28 May 2011 04:30 AM PDT

Online video-on-demand service to bite the dust

SeeSaw will be shut down if it isn't sold by June 30, 2011, as the owner Arqiva is no longer able to support it.

The service, which was launched in February 2010, "no longer fits with the strategic direction" of Arqiva. A spokesperson said that it was not very likely for SeeSaw to find a buyer.

A post on SeeSaw's official blog titled "Important News about SeeSaw", thanked all their supporters and informed them about the service's closure.

"As it will soon be goodbye from SeeSaw, we’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thanks for all your support, custom and loyalty over the last 16 months," it said.

It continued to say: "We’re a small team but we hope we’ve made a big difference and that you’ve had fun watching TV with us."

Arqiva is a partner in YouView, a BBC project, for video-on-demand.

Tell us on Twitter and Facebook if you were a SeeSaw user and your thoughts on the service. Follow us for more tech news as it comes in.

Just search for your artist of choice and the app will scour the web for a freely available version in double-quick time. It's great, but we're not sure what the music industry lawyers will have to say about it...

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

iPad app review: Crackle
An application which, completely legally, streams full-length, high-quality movies to your iPad sounds like the best thing ever, but when Channel 5 would turn their noses up at the selection it just feels like a big disappointment. Sony's crackle app has great potential, but until some decent content shows up, it's barely worth it.

Android app review: BBC News
Swiftly after the Beeb finally got the iPlayer on the Android Market, the corporation has followed up with the BBC News app, which has been a huge success on iOS. With a tremendous interface, in-story video and the content you love from the website, it's a joyful day for Android-lovers. It's not perfect though. There's a few niggles. Check out what stopped this app achieving five-star glory.

Windows Phone 7 review:  Compass (HTC)
If you're one of those lucky folks who bagged themselves at WP7 HTC phone. Basically, it's a handy compass that slots nicely on top of your Bing Maps experience, making it even easier to navigate to you destination. HTC Compass for WP7 is must download for any HTC fans who prefere WP7 over Android.

UK websites have 12 months to adopt EU cookie law

Posted: 28 May 2011 02:30 AM PDT

Clamping down on cookie hoarders

UK websites have been given a year's time to adopt the EU's new cookie law.

The EU directive affects information the websites can store about their visiors, with the new guidelines having to be enforced in the UK within 12 months.

The new law on cookies was brought into play on Thursday as part of the EU Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive.

According to the new guidelines, websites must now ask for consent from users every time it wishes to access personal information such as login details.

While UK websites are expected to start this practice now, action will be taken against them for non-compliance only after a year. "We're giving businesses and organisations up to one year to get their house in order," said Christopher Graham, Informational Commissioner.

He added: "This does not let everyone off the hook. Those who choose to do nothing will have their lack of action taken into account when we begin formal enforcement of the rules."

Currently, two countries are said to be fully implementing the new law with immediate effect.

Apple to give students iPad as part of Back-to-School deals?

Posted: 28 May 2011 01:30 AM PDT

The iPad might have just gotten easier to bag

Apple's back-to-school special is said to be announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year, with discounts that will tempt many.

According to a report by BGR, Apple might be offering students a discount of up to $200 off an iPad with the purchase of a new Mac or a free iPod Touch.

In addition, Apple will continue its policy to offer student discounts on computers, with the option of getting $229 off any other iPod model.

While Apple has always made its educational discount announcements around the same time every year, if this rumour is true, it will be the first time WWDC will be used as a platform for it.

In addition, we're not sure yet whether the iPad in question will be the first one, or the iPad 2 that's included in this offer.

Do you think the iPad will be included in Back-to-School offers? Let us know what you think over at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for more tech news and updates as we get them.
