Android App Market still lags behind Apple App store Posted: 27 May 2011 09:29 AM PDT
80% of paid apps in the Android Market are downloaded less than 100 times.
Figures show that only 20% of the Apps in the Android Market that have to be paid for are downloaded over 100 times.
The Android App market has constantly survived in the Apple App store shadow and the latest revelation show that this trend is continuing.
The 80% of paid apps that were downloaded over 100 times included the infamous Google Maps; the most downloaded app on Android with over 50million downloads.
In fact, only 96 applications have been downloaded over 5million times according to recently released figures from Distimo.
Further numbers suggested that free apps were much more frequently downloaded; with 75% numbering over 100 downloads.
Apple’s App store has recently announced it contains half a million apps, compared to the estimated 375,000 available in the Android marketplace.
Do you think Android will ever catch Apple's App Store? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play hits O2 after two month delay Posted: 27 May 2011 08:26 AM PDT
O2 launch Xperia Play with exclusive white handset The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has finally launched on O2 in the UK almost two months after the gaming-centric smartphone launched on other networks.
O2 has today confirmed the availability of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play having held the handset back for almost two months from its official release due to issues it had with the device’s software.
Available for £430 as a standalone PAYG handset, O2 will also offer the Xperia Play on contracts with the handset coming free of charge on a £37 per month two year deal that will see users given a monthly allowance of 900 minutes and unlimited text messages. 500MB of monthly data will set those looking to take up the offer back a further £6 per month.
Despite the near two month delay the O2 arrival of the Xperia Play comes sooner than expected with the network provider announcing earlier this month that the handset would not land until June.

LG Optimus 2X bug fix still 'several weeks' away Posted: 27 May 2011 06:46 AM PDT
LG confirm Optimus 2X issues are to continue for 'several weeks' LG Optimus 2X early adopters are to be left disappointed after LG confirmed it will be “several weeks” before it is able to fix an ongoing major bug with the handset.
With a number of Optimus 2X handsets being reported to have suffered from a ‘black screen of death’ issues that sees devices freezing and rebooting at random, LG has confirmed that despite prior intentions it could be a number of weeks until it is able to solve the problem.
Having previously revealed it would have a patch available to users by the end of May, a new post on the company’s Italian blog revealed Optimus 2X will face a further wait of “several weeks.”
"We regret having to announce that the software version expected by the end of the month – in order to solve the instability problems alleged by some customers – has been postponed for several weeks," said the company's statement.”
"Troubleshooting is taking longer than expected because of the systematic nature of the anomalies reported, involving only a part of owners of LG Dual Optimus [2X].
"However, we are aware of the hardships that some of you are [having] with our product. All resources are stretched to the limit of LG to release a best software [update] as soon as possible, but at present we have to move the deadline for issuing [to] the second half of June.
"We will do everything possible to bring forward this date."
Have you snapped up an LG Optimus 2X already, face the black screen of death issues? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Publisher Bloomsbury sees eBook sales increase 18 fold Posted: 27 May 2011 04:19 AM PDT
Kindle and tablets help boost eBook sales Amazon’s Kindle and other eReaders have given a new lease of life to book publishers with Bloomsbury today announcing its opening quarter eBook sales for 2011 have topped the £1.5 million mark.
Marking an 18 times year-on-year increase in revenue from digital editions of its printed releases, Bloomsbury’s increased stake in the eBook industry can be largely attributed to the rise in popularity of eReader and tablet devices.
"It will change the publishing business model, creating one worldwide market. The publishing world is handling its own revolution."
Despite its strong showing in the digital market, Bloomsbury’s profits were still down on those from 2009 suggesting eBooks are helping to slow but not completely quash the drop in sales for the publishing industry.
Will digital book sales ever take over overall sales of the printed medium? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android app news: Ghosttown streams every song free Posted: 27 May 2011 03:40 AM PDT
Forget Music Beta, if Ghosttown turns out to be legal, it's the best music app on Android, bar none. A music streaming app that almost defies belief with its amazingness has landed on the Android Market this week allowing instant streaming of any song you desire for free.
The Ghosttown app for Android scours the web for freely available tracks and when it finds a match, it streams it to your device, with a lightning-fast service that rivals Spotify's £10 a month Premium mobile app for its efficiency.
Simply search for an artist and within seconds you'll be presented with a pretty complete discography of that artist (we did a quick search for Foo Fighters and it brought back 12 full albums, including various compilations).
From there you can listen to single songs or full albums, skipping through songs just like you would in your Android Music application, complete with album artwork. You can add songs to playlists and favourites, both of which are instantly available.
The app description claims that it's like having an infinite iPod on your handset and its hard to disagree. The only minor quibbles would be that Ghosttown is prone to the occasional crash and that the quality of some tracks isn't top notch, but this app is free and can put any song you desire in the palm of your hand (an ad-free version can be downloaded for about 63p).
There's also no monthly limit on how much music you can play and if you're doing so over Wi-Fi you can have a musical companion all day every-day.
We have to wonder about the legality of this service though. Surely it must be breaking some musical copyright laws somewhere along the way? We hope it's on the level and manages to stick around, because on the surface, it's a massively impressive music streaming app. Get it now, it might not be around for too long.

PS4: we've already started on it says Sony Posted: 27 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT
Chief Financial Officer gives glimpse of next-gen Sony home console. Work on the PS4 is “already under way” according to the company’s Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato. While not explicitly naming the device, Kato referred to a “future platform” during a conference call yesterday.
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," said Kato. "But this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product, I cannot discuss - but our development work is already under way.”
Predictions about when the PS4 will be revealed have already begun, with some suggesting Sony will trail the console at E3 2012, before releasing it in 2013. Either way, it’ll have to go some way to beat the PS3, which is still kicking it after five years.

ASUS Eee Pad Android tablet to sport smartphone dock? Posted: 27 May 2011 02:36 AM PDT
Phone on the go, a tablet in the home ASUS has been quite forthcoming with its teasers ahead of Computex, with several lens flare-smattered posters appearing online promising a raft of new products. The latest of these is probably the most intriguing, as it appears to show a phone and tablet that are somehow interlinked – possibly by docking the phone inside the tablet.

iPhone 4 white conversion kit student hit by Apple lawsuit Posted: 27 May 2011 02:34 AM PDT
Teenager behind the white iPhone 4 conversion kit is hit by a lawsuit from the Cupertino company Apple has filed a lawsuit against a teenage American student who made in excess of $130,000 selling white iPhone 4 conversion kits before the lighter hued handset made an overdue official arrival last month.
Having set up the website whiteiphone4now.com to sell kits that allowed owners of the standard black Apple handset to the formerly illusive white model, 17 year old New York student Fei Lam has been slapped with a lawsuit for illegal use of Apple trademarks.
“Defendant at all times knew that Apple never has authorized the sale of white panels for its iPhone 4 mobile devices, and that he obtained these panels from sources that were not authorized by Apple or any of its suppliers to sell them.”
Having hit Lam and his parents with the legal papers, Apple is reported to have simultaneously filed a voluntary dismissal meaning the tech giant and teenager have agreed Lam will stop selling the conversion kits or risk facing further legal action.
Is there still a demand for the white iPhone 4 or with the 5 rumoured to be around the corner has Apple left it too late to launch the lighter toned handset? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad 3: Apple wants Samsung AMOLED screens Posted: 27 May 2011 02:06 AM PDT
Lawsuit seemingly no barrier to deal being done. Apple is looking to load up the iPad 3 with AMOLED screens made by Samsung. That’s according to the Korea Herald, which claims the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Tim Cook, has even been to Korea to sound out Sammy about the prospect.
Although Samsung is already one of Apple’s biggest component suppliers, the move would be a shock considering the companies are embroiled in a bitter legal dispute over whether Samsung’s Galaxy line draws too much inspiration from the iPhone and iPad.
Samsung and Apple have both kept schtum about the meeting, but this could mean the panel on the iPad 3 finally ramping up to the Retina Display resolution everyone was hoping for with the iPad 2.

Nokia Windows Phone: a new handset every three months Posted: 27 May 2011 01:01 AM PDT
Nokia looks to throw its weight behind Windows Phone. Nokia’s Windows Phone plans appear to be ramping up, with the mobile maker’s vice president of smart devices claiming it could release a new phone packing the OS every few months.
"We should be launching new devices in a rhythm that might be every couple of months, every three months, something like that," said Jo Harlow. "We're going to keep coming with new devices in order to have something to talk about.”
This would mark a radical departure for Microsoft, which has seen only a smattering of devices using WP7 launch since the initial rush from HTC and Samsung last October. Nokia has experience of continual releases, pumping out stacks of top-end Symbian phones when it was at the height of its powers.
Earlier this week, Nokia confirmed that it would be launching a number of Windows Phones later this year. That came after Microsoft touted its Windows Phone Mango update officially for the first time.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Arc: Android 2.3.3 update released Posted: 26 May 2011 11:31 PM PDT
Better battery and boost HD video recording thanks to new Android update. Sony Ericsson’s flagship Xperia devices, the super-thin Arc and the games-focused Play, have both been given a bump to Android 2.3.3. This iterative update brings a slew of minor fixes and tweaks, but most importantly adds SE’s new Facebook Inside Xperia feature.
The new Facebook layer, revealed last month in London, allows you to share and like everything from photos to videos without ever having to fire up the phone’s Facebook app or log into the social network online. Simply tap on a snap and add your own comments or just press ‘like’.
What’s more, all your Facebook photos now automatically appear in the Xperia Play and Arc’s photo gallery, bypassing the network’s somewhat cumbersome new photo offering completely.
As well as the new Facebook features, HD video on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc has been improved, while battery performance, Wi-Fi stability and touch sensitivity have all been boosted across both devices.

Google Wallet officially revealed Posted: 26 May 2011 11:16 PM PDT
Google Prepaid Card and Citi Mastercard only to start, with more partners expected. Google has officially come clean about its new Wallet app at a press event in New York. The search giant’s new online payment app uses NFC to allow punters to pay for goods on their Android phones.
The app lets you load up a Citi Mastercard or use Google’s own prepaid card service, which it says can be funded by almost any credit card. It’s then just a case of looking out for places where Mastercard PayPass is accepted when you want to use it.
Google says that its Wallet app goes beyond simply storing your credit card. It will also stash store loyalty cards, gift cards and special offers, cutting right down on the need to ever take your actual wallet out with you. It even claims that eventually cinema tickets, ID and boarding passes could be stored on it too.
The Big G has also revealed a new Google Offers feature, much like Groupon, which will sync with Google Wallet, allowing you to take any special discounts you’ve snagged with you. That service is only in Beta right now, with plans to roll it out across the US this summer.
Unfortunately, Google Wallet remains a Stateside-only affair at the moment, only working on the Nexus S 4G on Sprint. Mountain View has said the service will be expanding over the summer, but as yet there’s no word on when it’ll come to the UK.
Would you use Google Wallet? Is NFC really the future? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
