The court case for breaching copyright was filed against Limewire by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a group representing 13 record labels including Warner and Sony music. "We are pleased to have reached a large monetary settlement. A 400% increase in Android malware since 2010 Posted: 15 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT Posted by Devina Divecha on Sun 15 May 2011 Is your Android smartphone safe? According to a report, there has been a 400% increase in Android malware since 2010. A record number of security threats and highly targeted Wi-fi attacks are currently attacking enterprise and consumer mobile devices, with devices on the Android platform facing a 400% increase in malware. The information released by Juniper Networks in a report titled "Malicious Mobile Threats Report 2010/2011" said that cyber criminals have focused their attention to mobile devices. "In a recent survey of large businesses, we found that nearly 40 percent considered smartphones the device type posing the largest security threat now," said Jeff Wilson, principle analyst, Security at Infonetics Research. SMS trojans cause the most threat, causing 17% of all reported infections. In addition, the greatest distribution point for mobile malware is application download, yet not many smartphone users use an antivirus solution on their mobile device. "These findings reflect a perfect storm of users who are either uneducated on or disinterested in security, downloading readily available applications from unknown and unvetted sources in the complete absence of mobile device security solutions," said Dan Hoffman, chief mobile security evangelist at Juniper Networks. UK bosses ban Facebook at work Posted: 15 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT Posted by Devina Divecha on Sun 15 May 2011 How connected to Facebook and Twitter are you? Almost half of UK firms (48%) have banned their employees from accessing social networking sites at their workplaces in the last year, according to research carried out by HCL Technologies and Lewis PR. 63% of participants said that they were strictly advised not to use social media sites at work. However, 45% of employees felt that their bosses were afraid of negative comments about them and their firms on the websites as opposed to productivity problems. "It is quite remarkable that in this day and age, many employers are still putting their employees' interests as a low priority by not allowing them to use sites like Facebook," Vineet Nayar, CEO of HCL Technologies said. "Facebook is such a popular application that is so widely used for personal and business uses, it makes no business sense to ban it," he added. PlayStation Network back online after hacker attack Posted: 15 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT Posted by Devina Divecha on Sun 15 May 2011 It's back. After over a three week closure of the PlayStation Network, Sony has finally brought the popular network back online in parts of USA and Europe. Users have to install a firmware update (for which instructions have been posted) and change their passwords to get back into the PSN system again. In addition, users will benefit from an identity theft protection programme in countries where it is available. "Thank you for your patience and encouragement over the last few weeks," said Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications and social media, Sony in a blog post that announced the news about PSN going back online. He also added it was a restoration of services in phases, but would eventually be rolled out. Activating PSN now will bring back online gaming, chat, friends list and trophy comparison, PlayStation Home and services such as Hulu. Access to purchase games will be restored later. "The process has begun and some states are being turned on now, so please be patient as we reach your city and state. It will take several hours to restore PSN throughout the entire country, so please keep checking back for the latest updates. In the meantime, now's a great time to get your PS3's firmware updated, which is required to get online," he added. In addition to this, Kazuo Kirai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment made a video address apologising to users and informing them about PSN going back online. Customers have been promised a "welcome back" package, details of which will be given out soon. PSN went down on April 20, and it was later revealed that an external hack had caused Sony to take their PSN services offline. There were also reports that PSN users' personal details and credit card data may have been compromised, and gamers were unable to go online for all this time. Have you been able to access PSN yet?
