Nokia shares slid to their lowest since 1998, making it unlikely that the company breaks even between May and June this year. Things looking far better for Apple and its iCloud service, as Universal joined record labels Sony, EMI and Warner in signing a deal with the streaming service.

Acer revealed its latest tablet, the 10-inch Iconia M500, which will run using the widget based MeeGo OS and an Intel Atom processor. The product will be due to hit stores later this year. In other tablet news, Samsung stated that it will not be using its Bada OS on its next tablet releases, instead opting for Google Android in its bid to remain as Apple’s greatest rival in the tablet market.

iOS 5 rumours suggest Twitter will apparently be ‘baked’ deep into the mobile operating system, making it easy for users to upload photos to the social networking site. Apple also showed its kinder side today as it offered customers with faulty MacBook cases the chance to get them repaired for free.

iPad app news: Fanhattan movie streaming app launched

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 09:07 AM PDT

Comprehensive database allows you to pick and choose the best streaming portal.

With so many options to stream movies and TV shows to your phone or tablet, these days, it's about an app that brought them all together.

That's exactly what the newly launched, free-to-download Fanhattan app for iPad aims to achieve. While it seems very US-centric at the moment, the comprehensive aggregator opens up a world of possibilities for fans.

If you search for a movie to TV show, the app will present the best options to watch or buy from streaming portals like iTunes, Netflix and Hulu Plus, allowing you to find both the cheapest and best quality options available.

Aside from the basic streaming, there's a huge array of "discovery" options, which allow users to view the movie poster, see cast and crew details, reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, clips trailers and purchase the soundtrack info.

There's also links to buy fan gear (such as DVDs and T-shirts) from Amazon.com and the chance to share the movie with your friends via Facebook and email, while Fanhattan also encourages you to check out similar movies.

The options to watch the movie itself are quite limited at present, with the explosion of cloud-based streaming services, Fanhattan could prove to be a really valuable guide to the best way to view your favourite content on your iPad.

LA Noire Rockstar Pass unveiled

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 08:39 AM PDT

We knew it was on the horizon thanks to the leak a few weeks back but now Rockstar has confirmed its DLC pass.

Rockstar has unveiled the Rockstar Pass, a method of pre-ordering content for LA Noire before its been released, adding to the growing number of games going down this route.

Essentially what the pass secures is access to all DLC as it appears but with a 50 per cent saving on the price of downloading each one individually, this equates to around 800MS points or £9.99. This discount will then drop to 40 per cent after a limited period.

The Rockstar Pass is one of a number of 'Passes' that game developers are offering to create structered methods of downloading DLC, while also handily making a buck or two.

This is however not to be confused with Call of Duty's Elite Pass, which also costs but will in return offer functions similar to that found in Halo: Waypoint such as statistical data and social interaction features.

Windows Phone 7 Mango on new Acer W4

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 08:13 AM PDT

Despite its fairly standard specs this is the first phone as yet to have the major OS update out of the box

Acer has unveiled it's W4 handset which is the first handset as yet to have Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Mango update out of the box.

The W4 is not a phone designed to break records however, boasting just a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, 8GB storage and a 5MP snapper.

Of course what the main attraction will be is the inclusion of Windows Phone 7 Mango out of the box, the OS update which contains hundreds of minor and major tweaks to Microsoft's mobile operating system.

What do you think of Windows Phone 7, will Mango be tempting you away from iOS and Android? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Samsung takes on Apple at T3 Gadget Awards

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

The enemy is at the gates, and the mighty logo of Samsung is on the flag.

With 13 nominations in 19 catagories Samsung will be hoping to take on Apple in T3's 2011 Gadget Awards posing the question, could this be Samsung's year?

With the likes of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab setting the bar for Android tablets, it remained quietly efficient while bigger and faster rivals were released such as the Motorola Xoom and the LG Optimus Pad.

Samsung then released the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Android Honeycomb, a dual-core processor and a hefty 8MP snapper on the back. Then finally and most recently we saw the release of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 update and 8.9, both the slimmest tablets on the market, beating even the Apple iPad 2.

This dominance of our awards nominations is not just from appearing in the Tablet of the Year category but elsewhere with Samsung scoring nominations in Digital Camera of the Year, Computer of the Year, TV of the Year and the T3 Design Award for it's stunning 9-series laptop. Finally of course is the Galaxy S 2, considered to be the closest to rival the iPhone 4 and in some eyes, surpassing it.

With it's constant encroachment into Cupertino's territory through a raft of products and the hugely impressive UE55D8000 LED 3DTV almost setting the bar for high-end 3D TV's, is this the year of Samsung? Vote now here and let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Motorola Xoom 2 tablet leaked on company site

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 06:38 AM PDT

As leaks go, this is impressive, 5 new products beautifully pictured on one page.

Motorola has accidently leaked what appears to be a successor to the Xoom tablet alongside a watchphone and 3 new handsets.

All appear to have codenames at the moment but the 3 phones, all apparently running Android are named: Targa, Pearl and Slimline. All appear to be considerably thinner than anything Motorola has produced yet suggesting this could be part of a major overhaul of many of their products.

As well as the phone's are tantalising images of what appears to be a Xoom 2 tablet replete with new form factor and slimmer design. While there's absolutely no word on release date it's likely Motorola will want to have this tablet out and challenging the iPad 2 as soon as possible.

Finally is the inclusion of what appears to be a watchphone codenamed Tracy XL. While this wouldn't be the first time a company has created a product like this it's certainly the most cemented effort we've seen.

What do you think, will you be holding out for Xoom 2 should it come to the UK, or are you enthralled by the Dick-Tracy referenced watchphone? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.

Motorola Atrix arrives on T-Mobile today

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 04:46 AM PDT

T-Mobile has given an opening offer that could well have you thinking twice before you head to Apple.

T-Mobile has announced you can now get Motorola's flagship smartphone the Atrix. With a dual-core processor offering 2GHz of processing power and the option to turn it into a fully functioning desktop tool through webtop.

Motorola Atrix video

Calling itself the 'world's fastest phone' the Atrix certainly has some of the specs to back it up. Running Android 2.2 with a dual-core processor, HD Video recording and the ability to use a Lapdock which essentially turns it into a netbook.

T-Mobile has clealy jumped on board with this ethos and is offering customers who spend over £40.85 a month a free Work and Play kit which includes the HD Dock, Keyboard, Mouse and Remote Control. A tidy package indeed.

For those who perhaps would like something more, they will also be offering the Lapdock, a fully fledged companion with 11.6-inch screen, surround-sound speakers and keyboard, all in a laptop design that weighs 1.1kgs.

Has T-Mobile enticed you to head over from the world of Cupertino or away from Samsung's excellent Galaxy S 2? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple will fix faulty MacBook cases for free

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Apple shows its kind, loving side doesn't just stretch to free bumpers.

Apple is offering free fixes after it revealed a fault in certain MacBooks between Oct 2009 and April 2011 in which the rubber bottoms could, on occasion, liberate themselves from the case.

Apple is offering customers up to three free fixes for their MacBooks and will even give you a range of options on how you'd like your beloved laptop fixed.

If you can make it into the store then Apple will fix it there and then through the Genius Bar or alternatively you can go to an authorised dealer and they'll similarly oblige.

If however you're feeling a tad more adventurous or just can't make it into a store you can call them up and they'll send you everything you need to do it yourself including the parts and tools.

Acer unveils Intel Atom tablet running MeeGo

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 03:42 AM PDT

Since the rumours that Nokia's N9 would pack MeeGo, news relating to the OS had gone quiet until now.

Acer has unveiled it's latest foray into tablets with the 10-inch Iconia M500 which runs the widget-based operating system MeeGo.

Based around the principle of having the most important functions right at your fingertips Acer's custom skin of MeeGo is a simple affair, using live widgets and simple tabs to let you navigate your way around.

If it looks familiar as well, you'd be right. Essentially the sibling of Acer's Android equivalant the A500, the M500 runs on a Intel Atom processor and has a 1280x800 screen with 5MP snapper on the back

As a product it's definitely a desirable piece of kit, with the same slender lines we're seeing on Samsung's latest 10.1 Galaxy Tab and the iPad 2, whether or not it's back-to-basics UI will appeal remain to be seen. Acer's VP has said the M500 will be hitting stores at the end of this year, so there's still a time to wait yet.

What do you think about the M500, is MeeGo the new rival to Android, iOS and QNX on the BlackBerry PlayBook? Let us know what you think on Facebook or Twitter.

Apple iOS 5: Twitter integration set to run deep?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Options such as 'Upload to Twitter' may appear throughout the new UI

Another day, another iOS 5 rumour. This one’s off the back of word from the other day that Twitter is set to launch its own photo upload service, Twitter Pictures; Apple insiders and sources from around the web have crept from the woodwork to declare that Twitter will be ‘baked’ deep into the next iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system.

These rumours are primarily concerned with photography. Most of the claimed ‘sources’ reckon that Twitter’s photo service will sit within the camera and album app, making it easy to upload your snaps to Twitter just like how you can upload videos to Youtube currently.

Other voices are claiming that the integration won’t stop there, though. Some think that integration with the micro-blogging site will extend to something similar to that found in Windows Phone 7, where the contacts app will sync with Twitter to pull your friends’ feeds into one place.

What do you think? Does this move make sense, or should Apple focus more on Facebook? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung: no Bada tablets

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 02:53 AM PDT

Bada tablet had been rumoured previously.

Samsung has said it's not planning on releasing a tablet using its in-house Bada operating system. Instead, all of its slates will use Google Android, as the Korean company looks to consolidate its position as Apple's biggest tablet rival.

Sammy exec JK Shin told the Wall Street Journal that, "We'll continue to work with Android on future tablets." There had been talk that a Bada-based device would be released at a knock down price later this year.

Shin also referred to his company's lawsuit with Apple, saying that he didn't envisage the battle between the two tech titans getting out of hand. "We didn't copy Apple's design. We have used many similar designs over the past years and it will not be legally problematic." Steve Jobs might have something to say about that.

Nokia reeling as shares tumble

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 02:16 AM PDT

News goes from bad to worse for ailing mobile maker.

Nokia's annus horribilis has taken yet another turn for the worse, with the Finnish phone maker's shares slipping to their lowest point since 1998. The downward turn came after the company revealed it was changing its profit forecasts and that it was unlikely to break even between April and June this year.

Poor sales are said to be the cause of the slump. Nokia has struggled to match Google Android and Apple's iPhone, and its decision to jump ship to Windows Phone has meant that new Symbian devices have been few and far between.

Analysts claim that new products, specifically the first round of Nokia Windows Phones, should help Nokia regain some status later in the year. But if the problems persist, don't be surprised if those rumours about Microsoft buying out Espoo come true.

Intel Ultrabook plans revealed

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:21 AM PDT

Sean Maloney hands over details ahead of Comuptex speech.

Intel says a new range of ultrabook PCs are set to dominate computing in the next few years. The company outlined its plans to claw back market share from key rival ARM at this year's Computex show in Taiwan. These new machines, the first of which is Asus's NX21, will be thinner, cheaper and have epic battery life.

That's according to the chip maker's Executive Vice President Sean Maloney, who says ultrabooks will take over the laptop world in the coming years. In an interview with The Guardian, Maloney said, "If we do it right, the PC ultrabook will be 40% of the notebook market in about 18 months. We did this before in 2008 and we screwed it up: we didn't cut the price. Now, we'll cut the price, thanks to volume and scale."

In 2008, Intel's Ultra Low Voltage chips remained expensive, meaning skinny laptops aimed to challenging the MacBook Air failed to take off. This time though, with the arrival of Asus's new machines and with more to come, Intel reckons things are different.

Will ultrabooks be the next big thing? Or like smartbooks before them, will they go the way of the Dodo? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iWork hits iPhone and iPod touch

Posted: 31 May 2011 11:45 PM PDT

iWork trailed for iPhone well over a year ago.

Apple's iWork apps have finally landed for the iPhone and iPod touch, over a year since they were first mooted for the company's smaller iOS devices. Keynote, Pages and Numbers are now all sittng pretty in the App Store, costing 5.99 each. These latest versions are also available as a free upgrade to iWork for iPad users.

Each app works seamlessly with iWork for Mac and Microsoft Office, letting workaholics import and export docs, as well as being able to use specially designed templates. There's also support for Apple's ace AirPrint feature, although you'll need a pricey, compatible printer to make that particular feature work.

Pages, Keynote and Numbers have all been optimised for the small screen, with smart zooming features and full screen mode for checking out the final doc before sending it on to colleagues.

Will you be grabbing any of the new iWork apps for iPhone? Or has Apple left it too late to release its productivity tools for its best-selling blower? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Apple finalises iCloud deals

Posted: 31 May 2011 11:27 PM PDT

Deals come ahead of official iCloud unveiling on 6 June.

Apple has at last finalised deals with all four major record labels ahead of the official unveiling of its iCloud music streaming service on 6 June. Universal are said to be putting pen to paper this week, following Sony, EMI and Warners in backing the new offering.

The news comes from "people familiar with the matter" speaking with the Wall Street Journal. Apple has been working for months to get the labels onside, as it looks to allay any piracy fears about the new service. Neither Google or Amazon's cloud storage services have record label approval.

iCloud was officially named yesterday, as Apple confirmed that it would be detailing the service at its Worldwide Develope Conference in San Francisco next week. The streaming package is said to scan users' hard drives and allow them to snag the same tunes from an online digital locker. It will work on iOS-packing devices as well as Macs.

There may still be one stumbling block, however. Apple is yet to sign up all the requisite music publishers for iCloud. This could delay the launch, especially as publishers have become more vociferous about musicians rights.

We'll be bringing you all the official news on iCloud as it happens, so stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.
