Android app news: Sony Music Unlimited service launched

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:59 AM PDT

Music Unlimited digs iCloud in the ribs with all-you-can-eat Android service.

Sony has stolen a march on its rivals by launching its Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity service for all Android handsets.

The long-mooted, cloud-based music streaming service allows users access to 7-million songs, as well as access to your existing music collection through the data connection on your Android-powered device.

The launch of the Music Unlimited app seems to combine the best of apps like Spotify which offer subscriptions to unlimited music that you don't yet own, and the opportunity to stream music from your own library, like Google Music or Apple's iCloud.

The subscription-based app offers two tiers of service. You can have a Pandora-like ad-free radio app and the chance to access your own library for $4.99 a month (£2.99) and a Spotify-like all-you-can-eat service meaning you can play any song you want from the library and create your own playlists.

The app's interface is colourful and smooth and offers easy access to your own music as well as the 7-million strong library from all the major labels. Something that Google itself has yet to achieve.

Breaking from tradition somewhat Sony is offering this app to all Android-phone owners, not just those rocking a Sony Ericsson Xperia device.

Sony is currently offering a free 30 day trial to the premium service when you sign up at Music.Qriocity.com. The Music Unlimited app sorts of puts iCloud in the shade at the moment and offers a great alternative for Android owners with iOS envy.

Google Nexus 3 specs leak 'monster-sized' 720p screen

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:10 AM PDT

Specs leak for the Google Nexus 3 handset

Google Nexus 3 specs have leaked online with the handset mooted to launch Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich iteration of the Android OS reportedly set to sport a “monster-sized” HD screen.

Gadget blog BGR has claimed that a source has revealed that the Google Nexus 3, to be known as the Google Nexus 4G to US markets, will sport a new market leading 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz dual-core processor with further industry firsts to include its claimed 720p display.

Whilst the exact dimensions of the 720p HD display have not been revealed, the leaked reports suggest it will be of “monster-sized” proportions with a high-end 5-megapixel on the rear handling lowlight photography and supplying 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities.

Reportedly set to hit the US ahead of Thanksgiving celebrations in November, the Google Nexus 3 is claimed to boast 1GB of RAM and will apparently land without physical buttons as software improvements takeover all user navigation and control.

What features would you like to see included on the Google Nexus 3? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the upcoming handset.

HTC Desire Gingerbread update back on

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 08:35 AM PDT

HTC flip flops on Gingerbread for Desire plans

HTC has performed a giant U-turn announcing that despite previous word to the contrary it will now launch the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the former market leading HTC Desire handset.

Less than 24 hours after it declared that it would no longer be bringing the Android 2.3 update to the Desire, HTC has announced via its official UK Facebook and Twitter feeds that: "Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire."

Despite stating the Desire had ‘too little memory’ to support the 2.3 Gingerbread rendition of Google’s Android mobile OS, HTC appears to have found sufficient space for the software overhaul after users and networks hit back at the decision to can the update.

As well as facing countless cries of anger from Desire users on Facebook and Twitter HTC was faced with disappointed responses from networks who carry the former iPhone bothering handset.

"We only just found out and are sorry for the inconvenience this causes to our customers,” announced an official release from Three. "As you know, at Three we always try to bring the latest software updates to our customers as soon as possible, and we'll continue to work closely with all our partners to continue doing so going forward."

Was HTC’s move to bring back the Gingerbread for Desire update the company listening to user demand or cowering at the sign of unhappiness with the brand? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo Wii U not compatible with Blu-ray or DVD

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 06:41 AM PDT

Nintendo is to launch a propriety format instead of opting to include a Blu-ray drive in the Wii U

Nintendo’s recently unveiled Nintendo Wii U console will come without a DVD or Blu-ray player as the company targets its own propriety format, an interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has revealed.

Announced in an investor Q&A with Iwata, news that the Wii follow-up will not support either of the current leading entertainment formats comes as a surprise as the Japanese gaming head reveals the decision was made based on costing of the console.

"We feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies," Iwata declared.

As well as revealing that the Wii U will not support Blu-ray or DVD formats Iwata outed Nintendo’s plans to make the second-generation Wii the first social networking compatible console. "After examining the penetration and adoption rate of social networking services like Facebook, etc, we've come to the conclusion that we are no longer in a period where we cannot have any connection at all with social networking services.

"Rather, I think we've come to an era where it's important to consider how the social graph of the social networking services can work in conjunction with something like a video game platform."

Will the lack of a Blu-ray player be the Wii U’s downfall or can Nintendo make a propriety format work? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple 'harassed' by Samsung into unveiling iPhone 5 plans

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 04:51 AM PDT

Apple hit out at Samsung 'harassment'

Apple has declared that supplier and rival Samsung has been harassing it into unveiling secret plans and sample models of the upcoming iPhone 5 and iPad 3 devices.

Continuing the ongoing patent and trademark infringement lawsuit that is circulating the two companies Apple has declared Samsung “attempts to harass us” by demanding access to its unreleased iPhone and iPad devices.

In the midst of a legal case that is to deem whether Samsung’s range of Galaxy devices have been overtly influenced by Apple’s iPhone and iPad releases, the Korean tech giant has demanded access to Apple’s upcoming products after a judge forced it to show the Cupertino firm its unannounced and unreleased smartphone range.

"Samsung's Motion to Compel is an improper attempt to harass Apple by demanding production of extremely sensitive trade secrets that have no relevance to Apple's likelihood of success on its infringement claims or to a preliminary injunction motion,” the Apple court filing read.

"Apple made a compelling showing in its motion to expedite discovery that Apple needs samples of products that Samsung has already announced, distributed, and described, so that Apple can evaluate whether to file a preliminary injunction motion against those products, which look strikingly similar to the distinctive trade dress of Apple's current products.

"Samsung has made no such showing about Apple's future products. Therefore, Samsung's Motion to Compel should be denied."

Has Samsung taking a bit too much inspiration from Apple’s devices or it the Cupertino company the one stealing ideas? Share your thoughts on the matter with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Windows 8 release date leaked by Microsoft VP

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 04:05 AM PDT

Microsoft's Dan'l Lewin outs details on Windows 8 arrival

Microsoft has let slip a possible release date for the much awaited Windows 8 operating system with the company’s Corporate Vice President Dan’l Lewin hinting at an autumn 2012 arrival.

Speaking at the start-up LAUNCH event at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus, Lewin has hinted at that Windows 8 will follow “what happened in the past” with Windows OS releases with an unveiling later this year to pre-empt an autumn 2012 arrival.

“If you look at the crystal ball and just say what happened in the past is a reasonable indicator of what our forward looking timelines will be and just speculate,” said the Microsoft VP. “We've made the point about having a developer conference later this year, and then typically we enter a beta phase, and then in 12 months we're in the market, so let's make that assumption.”

On the seemingly far off release of the next Windows operating system, Lewin added that continued support to existing Windows users is top of the company’s priorities list.

"We have a commitment to our installed base. With Windows 7 on a huge number of devices, we have a very sound and terrific baseline. Given the scale, we have a very strong belief system about that commitment, and a very large customer base that thinks about managing these systems; so systems management, enterprise infrastructure, all those kinds of things."

What features would you like to see Microsoft include in an upcoming Windows 8 release? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone passcodes revealed in list of most frequently used

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 03:29 AM PDT

1234 tops list of most used iPhone security passcodes

The ten most frequently used iPhone passcodes have been released by the developer of a security application for Apple’s leading handset.

From 204,508 recorded passcodes, Daniel Amitay, developer of the Big Brother Camera Security app, found that the most frequently used security lock with 8,884 unique users was unsurprisingly the standard 1234 option.

Having updated his iPhone application so that passcodes used to unlock the apps were sent anonymously to his research, Amitay collated the data with the four-digit passcodes 0000 and 2580 rounding out the top three with 5,246 and 4,753 unique uses respectively.

Whilst all the ones and all the fives completed the top five, passcodes 5683, 0852, 2222, 1212 and 1998 all made the top ten of the most commonly used iPhone security codes.

“Naturally, 1234 is the most common passcode: mimicking the most common internet passwords,” announced app developer Amitay. “To put this into perspective, these 10 codes represent 15% of all passcodes in use.”

“Most of the top passcodes follow typical formulas, such as four identical digits, moving in a line up/down the pad, repetition. 5683 is the passcode with the least obvious pattern, but it turns out that it is the number representation of LOVE (5683), once again mimicking a very common internet password: “iloveyou.””

Is your iPhone or smartphone passcode included within this top 10 of most frequently used options, will this tempt you into changing your security lock? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo Wii U controller: Wii U can use more than one

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 03:17 AM PDT

Wii U may have the processing power to support multiple touchscreen controllers, but it's not necessarily something that developers will be focused on...

Still confused about the Wii U’s powers and capabilities? You’re not alone. T3 had one of the world’s first plays on the new console, but Nintendo was being so vague about specs and plans that it was hard to know what to make of it.

One point of contention was that it became apparent that it wouldn’t be feasible to use multiple Wii U controllers on one console. Now even that’s up in the air, after Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that it will, in fact, be possible.

Reggie spoke to analyst Michael Patcher, who told IGN: “They were particularly unclear about whether the console would support more than one of their tablet-like controllers; Mr. Miyamoto said no, but Reggie said yes (to me in a meeting)… Obviously, they intend to ship the console with only one of these controllers, so it is unlikely that anyone will develop games that require two.”

The point then, is that Nintendo have made it possible for offline multiplayer with two Wii U controllers to happen, but that developers probably won’t look to cator for this as the controllers will no doubt cost an arm and a leg. If you ask us, this means that Nintendo will probably release a ‘Wii U Clsssic’ style controller, which will have all the buttons but none of the screen or motion control tech.

What do you make of this back and forth? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Google voice and image search for desktop

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 01:12 AM PDT

Google has finally decided that using our keyboards is just too last year for searching.

Google has unveiled two new ways in which you can search, Image and Voice search, both of which are useable right inside the browser.

Image search lets you simply drag any image into the search engine and, in much the same way that it works on a mobile, will then scan the image and bring up the results.

Voice search on the other hand is fairly self explanatory, simply click on the microphone icon next to the search bar, speak your piece and Google will bring up all the results.

Both these functions are as a result of the huge increase in both image searching and voice searching used by consumers, in fact Google revealed that around 6.2 years worth of speech goes through their system, every year.

Will you be using these new features, or is the keyboard still the king? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

iPad 3 Retina Display rumours hot up

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 01:00 AM PDT

Gossip once again points to 2011 release for next-gen slate.

Rumours are once again flying about the iPad 3. And this time the gossip centres on the next-gen slate’s display. A new report from the Taiwan’s Economic Daily claims that the device will rock a screen resolution ‘5 or 6 times’ that of the iPad 2.

This could potentially mean the iPad 3 comes with a 2400x1600 panel, allowing Apple to claim it’s loaded up the tab with a Retina Display. The iPad 2 has the same 1024x768 resolution as the original version of the tablet.

The same website also claims that Apple is working towards a fourth quarter release, backing up other reports which have suggested the company could show off the new slate alongside the iPhone 5.

Is the iPad 3 coming too soon? And will it really have such an amped up screen? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

DXG-018 3D budget camera unveiled

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 12:58 AM PDT

DXG has unveiled a range of brightly coloured delights, all of which won't break the bank.

The DXG-018 3D camera is probably the cheapest 3D imager you'll find this side of Mars, and it's not too skimpy with the specs either.

Available in the US for just $70 it's aimed at being not only a budget camera but also one that could be used easily by kids, it has a 1.4inch LCD, SD card slot and dual lenses, all of which are apparently easy as pie to use.

They'll also throw in a pair of 3D glasses as well so that once you've printed your photos you and your children can marvel at the depth and clarity of the swing your little tyke snapped just the other day. Unfortunately there's no word on whether it's heading our way as yet, but fingers crossed.

Has this cheap and cheerful number persuaded you that 3D is the way to go? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Nokia to close UK online store

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 12:34 AM PDT

Nokia has had to take another hit, just days after feeling like it had been given a breather by Apple.

Nokia has confirmed that it will be shutting down the UK online store after it revealed that poor sales and huge subsidies by the networks had caused interest in the store to drop dramatically.

Customers in the UK will have until June 30 to get their hands on a Nokia handset direct, after which the company will still provide full product support.

This is hardly surprising news, the subsidies that networks offer has always been a barrier for the phone companies to directly compete with, however it is contrasting to the good news Nokia had just days before with it's battle against Apple.

Do you ever buy direct from a phone company or do you always go through the network? Join the debate at Facebook or on Twitter.

Apple Nokia iPhone settlement: £371 million paid

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 12:15 AM PDT

Lump sum to be followed by quarterly payments of around £84 million

The cost of Apple’s settlement with Nokia in its long-running iPhone patent dispute is starting to become clear. Deutsche Bank analyst Kai Korschlect reckons Cupertino will have to cough up as much as £371 million up front. And that’s before quarterly payments are taken into account.

Korschlect reckons Apple will have to stump up about £84.2 million every quarter. That’s based on iPhone sales in the last quarter, with Apple rumoured to be having to give Nokia one per cent of everything it makes on the iPhone.

While that is a vast sum, it should be viewed in terms of Apple’s overall profits of $6 billion in the first quarter of 2011. The company is now one of the largest in the world and as such can suck up these payments to the Finnish phone maker.

However, the cash will come in handy at Nokia, where sales of Symbian smartphones have slumped severely as it looks towards a new generation of Windows Phone-powered devices.

Wii U console snapped outside of E3

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 12:15 AM PDT

Despite the same level of security you'd expect at a military base, Nintendo it appears, has let some lucky few get close to the console itself

Pictures have surfaced showing what Nintendo's Wii U console will look like, making a change from the huge focus on arguably it's more important controller.

Snapped in the wild, the pictures (of which there are a grand total of two), show it's surprisingly small form-factor, contrasting with the latest rumours that the Wii U would be more powerful than a PS3.

Although we've already seen the console, we've only ever seen the front, whereas these new shots give some idea of the connectivity, showing a HDMI port alongside the power, network ports and a couple of USB ports.

So can this surprisingly small console really be as powerful if not more than it's competitors? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Xbox 720: E3 2012 rumours swirl

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 11:42 PM PDT

LA debut for next-generation Xbox.

The developer behind Crysis 2, Crytek, has hinted that Microsoft will launch the fabled Xbox 720 at next year’s E3. A “high-ranking industry source” who works for the dev handed the details to Videogamer.

Word is the company is working on a new Timesplitters title for the new Xbox 720. Apparently graphics on the new device will be significantly better than those found on the current Xbox 360.

To add to the E3 2012 launch gossip, the source also says they expect Microsoft to roll out its new console ahead of Sony. The PS4 is definitely in development, but is not expected to be released for a few years yet.

HTC Desire: no Android Gingerbread upgrade

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 11:30 PM PDT

Users left fuming after HTC goes back on word to update year-old phone.

HTC has used Facebook to confirm that its year-old Desire handset will not now be getting an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Taiwanese mobile maker claims this is due to a lack of memory space on the device.

In a statement, HTC said, “Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.”

The news sparked fury on the social network, as over 300 people piled in with angry complaints. The company had promised back in February that the Desire would be getting a boost to Gingerbread.

Many disgruntled owners have asked why the company loaded the Desire with just 512MB of memory in the first place, choosing to focus on its Sense custom skin instead of the Android operating system.

With iOS 5 capable of supporting the year-old iPhone 4, Desire owners are likely to be even more unhappy. For Google, this represents another major blow in its attempts to stymy problems surrounding the fragmentation of its Android OS.

Have you got a HTC Desire? Tell us what you make of HTC’s decision on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
