iPhone app news: Addison Lee taxi app coins it in Posted: 20 Jun 2011 12:21 PM PDT
App bookings now making up 11 per cent of all business. London-based taxi firm Addison Lee expects to rake in a whopping £20m in revenue in 2011 from customers booking cars through the company's iPhone app.
The firm received 75,000 bookings through the iPhone app in the month of May alone, which brought in £1.4m in revenue, which was a record month since the launch back in January 2010.
The free app, which has been used by 43,000 people to book taxis now and now accounts for a sizable 11 per cent of its business, also has a version for Android and BlackBerry soon to arrive in their respective app stores.
The app allows you to easily book cash or card taxis and will give you a quote before you confirm. You can also just enter your address and the nearest free cab will be sent directly to you, along with the driver's contact details.
"Most customers now use smart phones with GPS and we've seen a huge surge in demand for mobile app bookings," says IT director Peter Ingram.
"We've recently been testing our Blackberry and Android apps and getting very positive feedback from customers via Twitter, so we're confident both new versions of the iPhone app will be a big success."

News@8pm: New PS3 released and Wii U details leak Posted: 20 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Sony's Playstation 4 release is still “quite some time off” says the PlayStation US Chief Jack Tretton. With rivals set to bring their new consoles to market, this may be little more than sales ploy. In the meantime, a new low-wattage lighter PS3 has been confirmed.
Developers for the upcoming Wii U have been instructed to make games for a single controller. The current Wii wands will form any additional controllers. The company behind GTA and LA Noire, Take two, have confirmed, they will not be transferring the aforementioned titles to Wii U.
Apple, according to speculation, looks set to refresh its Mac Pro and Mac Mini machines at the end of July or early August, both of which are likely to be just updates of innards. An iPad 2 rivalling 7-inch dual-core tablet has been announced in the form of the Huawei MediaPad, the first to run Android 3.2 Honeycomb.
Google Photovine, a new image sharing service, could be launched soon. Likely to emulate photo sharing mobile apps, with easy uploading and the chance to look at other users’ snaps wherever you are. Facebook Music looks set for launch, by linking your chosen streaming service up to your account you’ll be able to play and control your music through a set of controls at the bottom of the page. ICANN domain name overhaul to expand suffix possibilities Posted: 20 Jun 2011 08:37 AM PDT
ICANN reveals plans for hundreds of new domain suffixes to go on sale from January 12th The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has revealed it plans to dramatically increase the number of available internet address suffixes with almost any word able to be filed for use as a domain ending.
Marking one of the most radical changes to the running of the internet to date, Icann’s proposed plans would see virtually any word in any language used as a suffix to end an internet address. With 22 generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) such as .org and .gov currently in use on top of around 250 country-level domain names, the new move would see gTLDs run into the hundreds with .technology, .google and even .coke all possibilities.
A timely and costly process, companies and web entrepreneurs will be able to apply for new domain suffixes from January 12th with applications to cost $185,000 (£114,000) and require applicants to show a legitimate purpose and claim for the purpose of request.
Will the open door policy for new domain suffixes help improve the web or make it a hard to navigate chore to use? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PlayStation 4 release date 'not for quite some time' says Sony Posted: 20 Jun 2011 03:53 AM PDT
Sony's US PlayStation Chief Jack Tretton has announced the Sony PlayStation 4 is still 'quite some time' from launch as the PS3 is advanced enough for now Quashing rumours that the eagerly awaited PlayStation 4 console is on the horizon a PlayStation head has announced the fourth-generation gamer is not coming anytime soon stating existing hardware is advanced enough.
Despite nearing its fifth birthday Sony’s PlayStation US Chief Jack Tretton has backed the PS3 to keep gamers entertained for a number of years yet announcing in a recent interview that the “PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride.”
Further looking to bolster the credentials of the aging PS3 Tretton added: “We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time.”
With Nintendo having officially unveiled the Wii U at this year’s E3 convention with the famed casual gaming giant launching its first HD console Tretton believes the PS3’s age will not see it slip to the second-gen Wii. ”What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3,” he stated.
Will Sony be forced to launch the PS4 sooner rather than later by the rise of the Wii U and Xbox 720? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Official Sony page appears confirming the arrival of a new PS3 Slim console in 2011 Sony is set to introduce a new version of its PlayStation 3 console after an official holding page appeared on its Japanese website.
- New PS3 Slim console pictures
Speculation had been mounting in recent months that the company was set to introduce a revamped version of its flagship console after a FCC filed pointed to two new PS3 models. Those expecting a radically new look console are likely to be left disappointed though.
The CECH-3000B PS3 model will boast a lower power consumption compared to the current Slim going from 230 watts to a more efficient 200 watts. Weighing in at a lighter 2.6kg, there will also be a 320GB hard disc, while on the external front it will have changes made to power and eject buttons with LED lamps said to have also been removed.
Available in Charcoal Black, accessories bundled alongside it will include the customary Dual Shock 3 controller, power cable, AV cable and USB cable.
There's no news on a release date, but pricing for the new PS3 Slim is expected to come in at around ¥34,980 which is roughly the same amount you'd need prise the current model away from the shelves in Japan. A 160GB model bundled with Tales of Xillia is expected to launch on September 8th priced in at ¥37,980.
We've had no details of a UK launch, but will let you know as soon as we know more.

Official release tomorrow, but early adopters can snag it now. Mozilla has released Firefox 5, unleashing a release candidate over the weekend ahead of the updated browser’s official launch tomorrow, 21 June. Versions for Mac, Linux and Windows are up for grabs on Mozilla’s FTP server.
While the update is more of a tweak than a major overhaul, it does give users the chance to easily stop advertisers tracking them from site to site. On top of that, there’s now WebM support and bug fixes galore.
Mozilla also says updates will become more frequent, as it looks to emulate Google Chrome’s incessant releases. Word is that Firefox 6 and Firefox 7 will be good to go by the end of 2011.

Google Photovine: new photo sharing service incoming? Posted: 20 Jun 2011 02:09 AM PDT
What has Google got planned for mooted photo network? Google looks set to open a new front in its fight against Facebook, with the search giant acquiring a trademark for a service dubbed Photovine. The Big G has also secured Photovine.com, suggesting a new image sharing service could be launched soon.
The trademark application refers to Photovine as a service for the, “…transmission of visual images and data by telecommunications and online social networks.”
What this means for Google’s Picasa image service remains unclear. However, it’s likely Photovine will look to emulate photo sharing mobile apps, with easy uploading and the chance to look at other users’ snaps wherever you are.
Expect to hear the Big G talk Photovine up officially very soon. What do you think this new service will offer? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Take Two: No Wii U ports of GTA and LA Noire Posted: 20 Jun 2011 01:00 AM PDT
News will come as blow to Nintendo. Take Two, the company behind the likes of GTA and LA Noire, has said it has no interest on porting its current best-selling Xbox 360 and PS3 titles over to the Nintendo Wii U.
In an interview with VentureBeat, Take Two’s top suit Karl Slatoff said, “We are not a big believer in straight ports in general. For us it's more about developing for the specific capability of each machine.”
Slatoff added that he would rather focus on developing new games, intimating that future versions of GTA and LA Noire could sit pretty on the next-gen console. Take Two is already close with Nintendo having created GTA Chinatown Wars for the DS.
Should Take Two make versions of its classic titles for the Wii U? Or should it stay focused on the future? Head over to our Facebook and Twitter pages to let us know.

Mac Pro and Mac Mini update incoming Posted: 19 Jun 2011 11:39 PM PDT
Top-end and entry-level desktop machines set for upgrade. Apple looks set to refresh its top-notch Mac Pro and entry-level Mac Mini machines imminently. That’s according to Cnet’s Brian Tong, who last night took to Twitter to claim he had inside information on the updates.
Tong used the social networking site to say, “My sources tell me ALL NEW Next-Gen Mac Pros and Mac Minis will launch either end of July first week of August.”
What Tong means by “all new” remains unclear. Is Apple going to completely redesign the machines? Or simply load them up with improved specs? The latter seems more likely what with upgrades to both the Mac Mini and Mac Pro only released in June and September 2010 respectively.

Nintendo Wii U: no second controller required Posted: 19 Jun 2011 11:27 PM PDT
Devs told to make games using one controller, with second player having to settle for Wii remote. Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the company’s recently announced Wii U will only make use of one super-sized controller at launch. In an interview, Iwata claimed that it would be too expensive to sell the tablet-like controller separately.
Developers have been told to create titles that only make use of one controller, with additional players able to interact with games using the old-school Wii remote. As shown at E3, original Wii controls can interact with the Wii U’s hulking effort.
Iwata did say, however, that it was possible that games could use two Wii U controllers. That at least leaves the door open for users to take their own controls over to a mate’s house and make it a proper two-player party.
Do you think Nintendo should sell a second Wii U controller? Or are you happy to stick with the wand-like Wiimote? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
