News@8PM: Facebook overtakes MSN, Sony Vaio Z

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

The growth of Facebook is no longer startling news, but the website reached a significant landmark today as it overtook MSN to become the UK’s second most popular website behind Google. Google itself has quietly launched wdyl.com (standing for ‘what do you love?’), a new service that will allow you to search amongst all of Google’s current services at once.

The Sony Vaio Z has been made public and Japan’s electronics giants look set to deliver an extremely high-performance laptop to the market in late July. Also busy was Acer, as it released the specs for the Chromebook (formerly the Acer AC700). The Acer Chromebook will compete with Samsung’s recently released Series 5 Chromebook, although there’s still no official word on a release date.

Following yesterday’s announcement that the HTC EVO 3D will be hitting UK stores in July, Vodafone has confirmed that it will be stocking the handset upon its launch. In other phone news, leaked reports have suggested that the next flagship Google handset, currently being dubbed as the Google Nexus Prime, will be produced by Samsung and may also be the launch partner of Android ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’

Finally, there’s news on two of the gaming world’s biggest first-person-shooters. Today saw the release on Xbox Live of the ‘Annihilation’ map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, the third downloadable content pack for the game. Meanwhile, Activision has registered domains for ‘Goldeneye Reloaded’, prompting suggestions that another Goldeneye game could be on its way in the near future.

iPad app news: Fring now tablet-optimised for four-way video

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 07:42 AM PDT

Fring brings free four-way video calls to the iPad

Popular iPhone instant messaging and video VoIP service Fring has released a tablet-optimised application for the Apple iPad 2.

The free Fring app, which allows users to make four-way video calls to other users arrives following the leak of Skype's yet-to-be-released iPad app.

Like Skype, iPad 2 users have been able to make use of the iPhone version of the app, albeit blown-up to match the iPad's 9.7-inch screen, meaning the resolution has been largely unsuitable for use.

Now iPad 2 users get their own version of the app, which also works over 3G, meaning there's little need to use Apple's Wi-Fi only, iOS device only FaceTime app.

Fring also has an Android app offering inter-platform calling. Fring for iPad is available to download now from the App Store.

Google now activating 500,000 Android devices per day

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 07:28 AM PDT

Google's Andy Rubin has confirmed via Twitter that Google is now activating more than half a million Android devices per day

Google head Andy Rubin has announced that the internet search giant is now activating more than 500,000 Android devices every day as it continues to expand in the mobile and tablet markets.

Making the announcement via his personal Twitter feed Rubin’s revelation comes just months after the company behind the Android mobile OS platform declared 400,000 of its software touting devices were being activated every day.

Speaking on the increase in activations Rubin’s tweet proclaimed: “There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it's growing at 4.4% w/w.”

Leading the smartphone market thanks to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, both dual-core handsets that run Google’s 2.3 Gingerbread rendition of Android, and making roads on the tablet scene with the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google announced last month that it had activated its 100 millionth Android device.

With activations increasing be 4.4 per cent week on week and new reports suggesting that Samsung is to launch the world’s first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device this September in the form of the HD screen touting Google Nexus Prime, it is likely we will soon be reporting the 200 millionth Android activation.

Will Google’s Android platform go on to dominate and revolutionise the mobile market for years to come? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Mobile network provider Vodafone has confirmed it is to offer the 3D capable HTC EVO 3D to UK consumers when the device lands next month.

Following on from yesterday’s announcement from HTC that the HTC EVO 3D will be rolled out across European markets including the UK in July, Vodafone has announced it will stock the 3D handset with eager consumers able to register their interest in the device via the Vodafone online store now.

Yet to reveal the precise date the EVO 3D will be available in the UK and at what price, a spokesperson for the red-hued network provider told T3: “I’m afraid I don’t have any further details just at the moment.”

GoldenEye Reloaded domains registered by Activision

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 02:39 AM PDT

Is Activision about to dust off the stellar title for yet another console remake?

Some people just never let sleeping dogs lie. As much as we’d like to believe it, there’s nothing that can be done to bring the N64 classic GoldenEye back to life in a way that’ll match the original’s magic. But that won’t stop people from trying.

Hot on the heels of 2010’s Wii remake, GoldenEye 007, Activision has just registered domains for 'GoldenEye Reloaded', suggesting that a further remake is in store for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Is it a remake of last year’s game or a full reboot of the original? Nobody knows, and Activison’s keeping schtum. Given the gap in time, though, we’d be surprised if it was just a port of last year’s title. There is talk that it could be among the launch titles for the new Wii U.

Are you keen for some more GoldenEye action, or should developers stop trying to recreate the original’s magic touch? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Samsung is expected to produce the first Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich device in the form of the HD screen touting Google Nexus Prime

Samsung is to manufacturer the next generation Google Nexus handset with the mooted Google Nexus Prime to land running the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich rendition of the Android operating system.

Previously leaked as the Google Nexus 3, new reports suggest the next flagship Nexus device will be dubbed the Google Nexus Prime and will be the launch device for what is expected to be version 4.0 of the Google Android mobile operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Having previously revealed that the upcoming Nexus handset would sport a “monster-sized HD display”, insider sources have reportedly confirmed to gadget blog BGR that the handset’s screen will be officially known as a “Super AMOLED HD display” a title that would seemingly confirm Samsung’s activity in its production.

Wdyl.com: Google lets you search itself

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 12:43 AM PDT

But has the search giant gone too far?

What do you love: it’s a new service from Google that brings all its services together in one place. In other words, Google’s letting you search itself. It’s like a normal search, but only showing Google results.

So enter a term, and you’re presented with results from Product Search, Google Trends letting you measure the popularity of your search term on the web, you can explore your result in 3D using SketchUp, make a photo album using Picasa, translate it using Google Translate... you get the idea.

A zoomed out version of the site on the left lets you jump down the grid to see patent searches, Google Voice, Youtube, Google Earth, etc.

It’s a great one stop shop for all your Google needs, but critics may question if it's gone too far. A regular Google search will show up most of these options, while including competitors’ services too.

What do you think? A next-gen search engine, or has Google gone too far? Let us know via Facebook or Twitter.

Facebook overtakes MSN in the UK

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 12:14 AM PDT

Time spent Facebooking per month is also up

Last week news broke of Facebook reaching 750 million users worldwide; well the social networking site is also still growing in the UK, as it’s just overtaken MSN to become the United Kingdom’s second most popular site.

No mean feat, considering MSN incorporates Microsoft’s web portal, its search engine Bing, and Windows Live.

No fewer than 27 million Britons visited Facebook in May this year, according to research from UKOM/Nielsen - that’s almost half the population.

We’re spending more time on the site per month, too, according to the same research. Average time spent is up from five hours 56 minutes in May 2009 to six hours 39 minutes last month.

But Microsoft isn’t worried. Ashley Highfield, Microsoft’s UK managing director, told the Telegraph he was “not fussed” about being overtaken. He said MSN was being refocussed, and he was more interested in the length of time people spend on MSN, as well as if they come back for repeated visits.

“I almost want our page views to drop,” he said.

How long are you spending on Facebook a month? Let us know via Facebook or Twitter.

Stewart Lee responds to Twitter imposter (NSFW)

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 11:44 PM PDT

Warning: contains strong language

Stewart Lee’s loathing of social media is well known, after a red button extra for the latest series of his Comedy Vehicle depicted a social networking guru (played by Kevin Eldon) trying to teach him to work across multiple platforms. But now the comedian has hit out at someone using his name and image on a Twitter account. And he didn’t hold back.

“A c*** is pretending to be me on Twitter, which is annoying,” the comedian wrote on his website. “It is not possible for me to stop this c*** without joining Twitter, which I will not do.

“I will never appear on Twitter,” he went on. “I will also never pretend to be on Twitter. The fact a c*** can do this is partly why.”

The fake account, @Stewlee, has since been deactivated.

“Stewart Lee is not on Twitter,” confirmed his former comedy partner Richard Herring, via his Twitter account. “Anyone claiming to be him is lying. Badly.

“He will never be on Twitter because he doesn’t understand it and has no desire to learn.”

TomTom iPhone app updated

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 11:25 PM PDT

Helps you save time and stay safe on your journey

Driving for too long without a break is not only knackering, it can be potentially dangerous. Well now TomTom’s iPhone app has been updated, with a neat feature that’ll help you stay on your toes, and avoid any potential accidents.

Version 1.8 of the app lets you plan up to five stops along the way, setting them as waypoints just as you would your destination. Service stations for motorway journeys, diversions to pick up a friend, or even just a landmark you want to visit on the way, they’re all possible. It’s the first time it’s been featured in a TomTom app, and removes the hassle of having to recalculate your estimated arrival time for your destination.

The update also brings the latest maps, with the most recent changes to roads, as well as a refresh to TomTom’s speed camera database, to help you stay safe while avoiding fines.

All the usual features are on board too, with HD Traffic, IQ Routes, turn by turn guidance, and optional celebrity voices.
It’s available now for £49.99 (UK and Ireland maps) from the App Store.

New Sony Vaio Z: ultra-portable notebook

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 10:56 PM PDT

Ultra-light, and coming next month

Sony’s new Vaio Z has been unveiled to the European press, and it’s got it in the looks as well as the specs department.

The 13.1-inch netbook has a monster seven hour battery life (the same as the Vaio S), that’ll give even a Google Chromebook a run for its money. The screen is 1600x900, and under the bonnet you’ve got a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 256GB flash drive, and 8GB RAM. More than enough to satisfy even the most demanding of laptop users.

Though gamers may wish to look elsewhere, as it only has Intel’s HD graphics 3000 solution. But it does sport a Power Media Dock, with the grunt of an AMD Radeon 6650M GPU with 1GB memory connected via Light Peak when you really need it, so it’ll handle HD movies with no slowdown whatsoever, something not all 13-inch ultralight laptops can boast about.

It's due to land at the end of July, but there’s no word on price yet. Just don’t expect it to be cheap.
