iPad app news: Battleship HD lands on iPad

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 11:59 AM PDT

iPad game joins iPhone and iPod touch outing in the App Store.

What's old is new again. Electronic Arts has taken ye olde past time of Battleship and launched it on Apple's sparkly iPad tablet in HD form.

The official app, which is available for the introductory price of £1.89, lets you enter combat in single player action against the CPU, two player warfare on the same iPad as well as a two-player iDevice-iDevice mode.

If you want to pretend your iPad's CPU boats waters full of dastardly Russian subs then there are three modes on offer: Classic, Salvo and Super Weapons mode.

The app has been available for the iPhone and iPod touch for a good while now, but the iPad version brings HD quality graphics, the advantages of playing on the bigger screen and an enhanced UI.

For those youngsters unfamiliar with Battleship, it's a slightly murderous strategy game in which players are required to take down the vessels of their opponents by guessing where they have placed their boasts until their challenger is forced to utter the dreaded cry "You have sunk my Battleship."

The origins of the game go back to pre-World War I when it was played using pen and paper. After that it was the tradition board-based adventure. It was first digitised in 1977 by Milton Bradley's Electronic Battleship game.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 handset leaks ahead of launch

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 07:12 AM PDT

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has been caught on film brandishing the company's first Windows Phone 7 device

Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 handset has leaked online with images and video of the eagerly awaited device hitting the web following a confidential internal company reveal by CEO Stephen Elop.

Heading for a UK launch around October alongside Microsoft’s Mango Windows Phone 7 operating system update, the first Nokia WP7 device looks very similar to the MeeGo powered Nokia N9 device that was officially unveiled earlier in the week with the Microsoft mobile OS at its core.

Hitting the web courtesy of Dutch website technnet, the much mooted Nokia Windows Phone 7 collaboration handset is seen in a leaked video that shows Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop presenting the handset to his employees.

“This is something that is super confidential and we do not want to see out in the blogesphere,” announces Elop in the outed video available below. He adds to the gathered Nokia staff: “We think it is important for all of you to understand how this innovation lives on and how well we as a company are today executing it.”

Sporting a remarkably similar form factor to the Nokia N9, the yet unnamed Windows Phone 7 device boasts, according to Elop’s commentary, “gorilla glass” and a “pillowed shaped back.”

Speaking directly with T3 a Nokia spokesperson said on the leak: "It’s our policy not to comment on rumours or market speculation – but we can tell you that we’re excited about with the progress we’re making on Nokia with Windows Phone and look forward to the day that we can share it with the world."

Will Windows Phone 7 be Nokia’s saviour or a minor delay to its slippery slope? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPhone 5 release to see dual-LED flash camera inclusion

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 04:16 AM PDT

Apple's iPhone 5 handset is to feature a dual-LED flash alongside an 8-megapixel camera, bringing it in line with other market leaders including Blackberry and Samsung handsets

Apple is set to up the photographic capabilities of its iPhone devices with the iPhone 5 reportedly in line to host a dual-LED flash alongside an 8-megapixel snapper.

Following on from reports yesterday that suggested the iPhone 5 is to be officially unveiled in September sporting the same 1GHz dual-core A5 processor chip as the iPad 2, tech blog Digitimes is reporting the next-gen smartphone will boast a dual-LED flash.

Whilst previous reports have claimed Apple’s eagerly awaited smartphone follow-up will sport an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording credentials, both features that are expected to bring the handset in line with the current market leaders, this latest leak marks the first reference to an upgraded flash offering.

Everlight Electronics, Edison Opto and Lite-On Technology are all being touted as suppliers for the new iPhone 5 components ahead of the device’s expected autumn release alongside the recently unveiled iOS 5 operating system.

What new features will the Apple iPhone 5 land touting; will a dual-LED flash be amongst them? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple removes Intifada app from its App Store

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:52 AM PDT

Apple removes controversial iPhone app Intifada from its App Store after complaint by Israeli government claims it glorifies violence against the Jewish state

Apple has removed an iPhone app from its App Store after complaints from the Israeli government that it glorified violence against Israel.

The Third Intifada app which is a term used for violent uprisings against Israel, contained stories and articles that Apple deemed 'offensive'. The free application also contained links to websites that helped to organize recent violent clashes.

Concern over the controversial app was raised when the Israeli minister of public affairs sent  an email to Apple chief executive Steve Jobs which called for the "immediate removal" of the application.

Tom Neumayr, a spokesman for Apple said that the Cupertino company removed the app "because it violates the developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people".

Apple recently removed a 'gay cure' app under the same Section 19 on Apple's App Store policy which states: “Apps containing references or commentary about a religious, cultural or ethnic group that are defamatory, offensive, mean-spirited or likely to expose the targeted group to harm or violence will be rejected.”

Questions are now likely to be raised as to how the app made it onto the App Store in the first place with the strict regulations put in place by Apple to keep the bad apps out.

Are you suprised that the Intifada app made it onto the App Store? Let us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

PS Vita release date leaked as December 31st by Amazon

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:30 AM PDT

Amazon has revealed the Sony PlayStation Vita will launch in the US on December 31st

Sony’s PlayStation Vita console is set to launch on December 31st in the US, online retail giant Amazon has revealed.

In what would prove to be an unusual move from Sony if accurate, Amazon.com has listed the upcoming PS Vita console with a release date of December 31st, a week after what would arguably be its key selling period of the pre-Christmas rush.

Whilst the retailer’s UK outlet has yet to issue the next-generation portable games console with a release date, it is currently taking pre-orders on the next-generation portable games console with the Wi-Fi only model set to cost wannabe owners £229.99 with the Wi-Fi plus 3G offering handed a £279.99 price tag.

Earlier this week UK online retailer ShopTo.net hinted that the Sony PlayStation Vita would be hitting UK shores on November 4th having made a full list of 20 Vita games available for pre-order with the early November arrival time and a £39.99 apiece pricing.

Is the Sony PlayStation Vita the next big thing in the gaming industry or a console that will play second fiddle to Nintendo’s 3D capable 3DS device? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

EA confirms FIFA 12 UK release date

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:12 AM PDT

EA officially announces FIFA 12 US release date as September 27 - but the rest of us have to wait until September 30 to get our hands on a copy!

Pre-orders at the ready: After showcasing FIFA 12 at E3 2011, EA has finally confirmed the official UK release date. The next title in the sports franchise will launch on September 27th in the US, with a September 30th UK release date pencilled in. That extra three-day wait already seems unfair.

The game will launch with a raft of new features, including an advanced impact engine - as mentioned in T3's FIFA 12 review - that looks to put an end to the set series of tackle and bump animations. This time, player’s bodies will react like real people, crumpling when beaten to a header or tripping dynamically over whatever part of their anatomy got held up.

EA has stated that it’s getting increasingly difficult to find ways to improve on an already winning formula, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Winklevoss twins agree £48 million Facebook settlement

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 12:59 AM PDT

Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook have agreed to pay a settlement to the Winklevoss twins valued at £48 million, bringing their longstanding lawsuit to an end

The Winklevoss twins have agreed a $65 million (£48 million) settlement with Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook, bringing to end a longstanding legal battle surrounding the original idea for the social networking site.

Memorably depicted in last year’s theatrical release on the founding of Facebook, The Social Network, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss have agreed to settle their legal dispute with Zuckerberg after the Supreme Court ruled they would not be permitted to renegotiate a settlement they originally agreed upon in 2008.

Whilst the Winkelvoss twins were reportedly preparing to appeal against the Supreme Court ruling based on a rise in the value of the social site, generous stock options have forced the Olympic rowers into settling their dispute.

"After careful consideration [the] appellants no longer oppose issuance of the mandate, and have no objection to vacatur of the stay of issuance of mandate," the twins’ latest legal filing read.

With Facebook’s valuation estimated to rise to a staggering £100 billion by the end of next year, the Winklevoss’s £48 million settlement which is split between £12.5 million in cash and £28 million in stock could see the brother’s final payout from Facebook far exceed its current worth.

Is Facebook still the dominant force of the social networking scene or has it lost some of its sparkle to the likes of Twitter? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
