“Apple may hold an event in the beginning or middle of August to announce the new iPhone, with availability to follow in the last week of August,” the reported leakster claimed. Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 5 alongside the recently revealed iOS 5 later this year.

Apple rich enough to buy the entire mobile industry Posted: 21 Jun 2011 08:17 AM PDT
Asymco reports, the success of the iPhone means Apple could buy all its competitors bar Samsung and LG in one swoop Apple has enough money in the bank to buy out all of its mobile industry competitors and single-handedly rule the smartphone scene, an industry analyst has revealed.
With Apple set to have a reported $70 billion (£43.19 billion) in the bank when the year's second quarter comes to a close at the end of the month, Horace Dediu of analyst firm Asymco has calculated that the Cupertino giant could buy outright all of the companies rivalling its iPhone handset.
With Apple announcing earlier in the year that it had shifted 18.65 million iPhones during Q1 of 2011, marking year-on-year growth of 113 per cent, Dediu predicts Apple’s cash reserves will continue to grow as its share of the mobile industry increases.
“The more remarkable thing is that as market values of phone vendors continue to decline, Apple’s cash will continue to grow dramatically. Indeed, a time may soon come when Apple’s cash will be worth more than the entire phone industry.”

App developer Seesmic drops BlackBerry support Posted: 21 Jun 2011 07:31 AM PDT
App developer Seesmic has dropped as BlackBerry support in order to focus its efforts on iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7 platforms Developer Seesmic has announced it is to drop support of all Blackberry platforms adding to a troublesome few weeks for RIM that has seen share prices tumble and PlayBook sales struggle.
Today, however, potentially brings the most telling sign things to come for BlackBerry with Seesmic, famed for its twitter application, revealing it is dropping support for Blackberry products. In its blog the software developer announced: “Effective June 30th, Seesmic will discontinue support for Blackberry in order to focus development efforts on Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7.”
One possible reason for Seesmic's jumping ship could be the recent confirmation of an official Twitter application for the BlackBerry PlayBook with sales of the tablet failing to impress despite 500,000 units being shipped in the US during Q1 prior to the device's UK arrival last week.
Is the Blackberry platform falling behind the competition into the mire or did Seesmic simply know when it was beat? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

3DTV to remain a 'novelty' with UK audiences Posted: 21 Jun 2011 03:40 AM PDT
3DTV is to remain a novelty with 3DTV owners in the UK 3DTV is to remain a “novelty” viewing experience for UK audiences despite the investment broadcasters and manufacturers have put into the extra dimensional tech, industry analysts have claimed.
With 11 million UK households expected to tout a 3D capable TV by 2016, the three dimensional viewing technology will hit the mass market, however, less than half of this figure are expected to utilise the 3D experience, a forecast by Informa Telecoms and Media has revealed.
He added: “Despite this, public reaction has been mixed – due to both a lack of content and a simple failure of the public to engage with what is, essentially, a new type of viewing experience.”
Whilst less than half of 3DTV owning consumers are expected to watch 3D content in the future, a reported 90 per cent of the 125,000 early adopters who snapped up a 3D capable TV last year remain an ‘active’ audience for the extra dimensional shows.
Speaking on his belief that 3D ability is more of an industry expectation that a consumer want, Thomas stated: “Irrespective of existing public demand for 3D, major set manufacturers (Samsung, LG, Panasonic, et al) increasingly see 3D capability as a feature that they must include in their sets, or the perception will be that rival manufacturers are producing a technically-superior product (with 3D included).”
Is 3D the future of the home TV experience or is it a novelty that will come to pass and remain a ‘special event’ technology? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Black MacBook Air: Apple scraps plans Posted: 20 Jun 2011 11:46 PM PDT
Plans were scrapped because coating picked up too many fingerprints. Rumours of a black MacBook Air picked up plenty of pace yesterday. But now it seems Apple has killed off plans to give its super slim machine a lick of paint, although a Cupertino staffer has confirmed to MacRumors that Jobs and co were working on such a device.
In an email to the Apple fanatics, the employee said, “We tried to powder coat the Air's [sic](and Pro's [sic] for that matter) in black as a test run. There are more than a few floating around campus. The coating looks good and holds up well, but it also soaks up body oils, making the palm rest look pretty gross. Ultimately that is the reason that the top brass (Jobs) killed the idea... it was just too easy to make the computer look like crap.”
Having had to wait almost a year to be able to release the white iPhone 4, it’s no surprise that Apple has decided on killing off the new-look machines before showing them off to the public.
However, the staffer does claim that black models will be released in the future, just not, “…anytime soon.” Like the idea of a black MacBook Air? Or glad that Apple’s not going to mess with the aluminium frame? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Gorgeous New Nokia N9 handset still set to be overshadowed by forthcoming Nokia Windows Phone 7 efforts. The Nokia N9 is here at last. The stunning top-end MeeGo phone has finally been made official after almost a year of rumours. And while the new blower lacks the slideout QWERTY keyboard of old-school spy shots, it comes stacked with amazing features.
With a gorgeous 3.9-inch AMOLED panel, the N9 has no home button, but a unique new feature which lets you access the homescreen from any app by simply swiping across the screen.
In a clear dig at Apple, Nokia talks up the polycarbonate frame in its official release, saying it, “…enables superior antenna performance. This means better reception, better voice quality and fewer dropped calls.”
Beyond that little spat, the phone also comes with an 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, 16GB or 64GB of storage, free turn-by-turn Maps access and Nokia’s new Drive feature to get you from A to B swiftly.
Rounding the package off is Dolby Digital Plus skills and NFC tech. As mentioned MeeGo is running under the hood, with access to stacks of apps from Nokia’s dedicated portal. The only issue is whether this is worth plumping for ahead of the forthcoming Nokia Windows Phones, due out by the end of 2011.
