Welcome to your nightly round up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

HP’s TouchPad will launch in the UK this July, and will be available from £399 it was revealed today. Featuring a 9.7-inch display and a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, HP will hope the tablet can compete strongly with Apple’s iPad and iPad 2. Ubisoft confirmed Assassins Creed Revelations will hit UK stores on November 15th, throwing it into Christmas competition with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3.

Nintendo’s share prices have slumped to a five-year low, despite the unveiling of its new console the Wii U earlier this week. Nintendo did confirm today though that it is preparing to refresh its hand-held 3DS range with a Red Flare colour scheme to go alongside the current black and blue offerings.

Vodafone is now offering the HTC ChaCha free on a two-year contract, with a fee of £26 per month getting you the Facebook integrated phone, 300 minutes, unlimited texts and a 750MB data allowance. Apple has relaxed its in-app subscription rules, allowing content providers to charge what they want for the applications they provide. It is thought they have made this move to keep publishers using App Store, rather than enhanced websites.

Google has honoured music legend Les Paul with its latest homepage doodle, a playable guitar which allows you to create and record your own riffs. Finally, always found your hotel experiences lacked a certain something? Well, according to Travelodge and futurologist Ian Pearson, by 2030 hotels will be offering virtual sex experiences and a range of other services as standard.

Apple iPads used by UK nursery to entertain toddlers

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 09:13 AM PDT

iPads used to keep toddlers entertain and educated at UK nursery

A chain of nurseries in Bath and Wiltshire has become the first in the UK to splash out on Apple’s iPad tablet in order to keep its three and four-year-old toddlers entertained.

Snapdragons Nurseries has confirmed that it has already fitted three of its premises with Apple’s market leading tablet with plans to equip all six of its locations with the coveted gadget in the near future.

“We have introduced the iPads because they are so child-friendly and easy to use,” announced James Collard, Manager of the Weston Snapdragon Nursey. “The touch screen technology is ideal for young children’s hands and the small size and portability make them perfect for sharing and using in different areas of the nursery.”

Using the iPads as a learning tool and not just a entertainment device, Collard added: “The apps that we have added have been carefully selected to encourage a broad and balanced range of skills including learning the basics about letters, numbers, shapes and colours as well as drawing and even composing music. The children have also had great fun communicating with each other between rooms and other nurseries in the group using FaceTime video chat.”

Do you think it a smart move making toddler tech savvy from an early age or wrong to infiltrate youngster’s lives with technology too early on? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Latest Google Doodle honours Les Paul with playable guitar

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 08:08 AM PDT

Release your inner rock-god with Google's new guitar doodle

Google have celebrated the life of music icon Les Paul by producing its own playable guitar as the latest Google Doodle available today from the site's homepage.

On the day of what would have been his 96th birthday, anyone who logs onto the Google homepage will be able to see Google’s own 10-string virtual guitar, and attempt to play and record their own riffs using the mouse or keyboard.

Most famous for having his name attached to the Gibson Les Paul guitar, an instrument which has been immortalised by music legends such as Slash, Jimmy Page and Bob Marley, Paul was also the inventor of multi-track recording, and a successful recording artist, releasing albums right up until his death aged 94.

The doodle is the latest in a long line of Google creations, the most popular to date being the Pac Man game on the site last May. Today's guitar doodle offering looks set to offer bored office workers and students around the country just as much valuable procrastination time as its playable Pac Man predecessor.

HP TouchPad to launch in the UK this July from £399

HP has revealed that its first webOS tablet, the HP TouchPad, will officially launch in the UK in mid-July following the devices arrival in the US and a number of European nations.

Set to land in America, France and Germany on July 1st, the UK will be privy to the HP TouchPad later the same month with the 16- and 32GB renditions of the webOS tablet to set early adopters back £399 and £479 respectively.

Sporting a Wi-Fi only connection the first round of HP TouchPad tablets will be available for pre-order from June 19th boasting a 9.7-inch display and a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor lining the TouchPad up as a potential competitor to Apple’s market dominating iPad and iPad 2 devices.

“What makes HP TouchPad a compelling alternative to competing products is webOS,“ proclaimed Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president and general manager, Palm Global Business Unit, HP. “The platform’s unmatched features and flexibility will continue to differentiate HP products from the rest of the market for both personal and professional use. This is only the beginning of what HP’s scale can do with webOS.”

Nintendo 3DS to get Red Flare colour scheme makeover

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 06:38 AM PDT

Nintendo confirm red 3DS console with join current blue and black offerings

Having officially unveiled the Nintendo Wii U console at E3 earlier this week Nintendo has confirmed it is also planning to refresh its handheld offering bringing a splash of ‘Red Flare’ to its 3DS line-up.

Set to join the existing Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black colour variants of the pocket friendly glasses-free 3D gamer, the Red Flare Nintendo 3DS is set to land in the gaming giant’s native Japan on July 14th with a ¥25,000 (£190) price tag.

Although Nintendo has yet to announce if, or indeed when, the Red Flare Nintendo 3DS will be made available in the UK, if previous DS models are to go by, additional colour schemes for the 3D portable console are expected to launch on British shores throughout the device’s lifecycle.

Launching in the UK on the same day as the iPad 2, Nintendo’s 3DS console has been repeatedly hit by a number of issues that have seen the device criticised for making users nauseous and giving users headaches and dizzy spells.

Would you be more tempted to buy a Nintendo 3DS if it was available in more colour schemes or are you simply not interested in the pocket 3D gamer? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad app news: Apple relaxes in-app subscription rules

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 04:46 AM PDT

Apple stacks the deck in favour of its content providers.

Apple has caved-on to pressure from publishers to relax its strict rules for in-app subscriptions on the App Store, meaning magazines and newspapers can now charge what they want for their products.

Apple's previous guidelines, which were set to come into effect on June 30th, saw Apple demand a 30 per cent share of any subscriptions sold through the App Store, while restricting publishers to charging equal to or less than the physical mag.

Now publishers, who have called the policy extortionate, can now charge whatever they like for their in-app subscriptions to account for Apple's 30 per cent of the takings.

In a copy of the new guidelines obtained by MacRumors, Apple has said that publishers who offer their subscriptions on a non-in-app basic will not be charged a cut of the profits.

However, the change could be bad news for the consumer who have been able to take advantage of a few reasonable deals in order to take their daily reads to their precious Apple tablet device.

However, publishing houses will be delighted and might be able to start making some real money from their digital endeavours.

Apple's change of heart might have something to do with the growing trend for publishers to offer their content through enhanced websites, hence by-passing the App Store and cutting Apple out of the profits.

This way stacks the deck very much in favour of the publishers which can now take advantage of iTunes easy payment and download service and still rack in the profits.

Nintendo Wii U fails to impress investors as stock prices drop

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 04:46 AM PDT

Unveiling of the Nintendo Wii U sees Ninty's stock slump

Nintendo’s Wii U console might have created quite a buzz with the media and gaming fans following its unveiling at E3 earlier this week but the new Ninty console has failed to please investors with the company’s stock continuing to drop.

Slumping to its lowest point since March 2006, prior to the arrival of the original Wii console, Nintendo’s share prices have crashed for a second consecutive day with a 4.5 per cent drop in today’s markets following Wednesday’s 5.7 per cent slide.

The Nintendo Wii U was officially show off during Nintendo’s E3 press conference with the next-generation console that is set to launch during 2012 boasting 1080p Full HD graphics and a controller that features an expansive display.

"It's unclear who Nintendo is targeting with the Wii U and where it wants to go," announced Tokai Tokyo Research Center analyst Yusuke Tsunoda on the upcoming console’s unveiling, an opinion that based on the drop in stock prices is echoed by shareholders.

Will the Nintendo Wii U hit the heights of the original Wii or does its lack of direction mean it will crash and burn? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Virtual sex to be offered by hotels as standard by 2030

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 03:59 AM PDT

Virtual sex to be joined by energy monitoring and medical diagnosis in hotel of the future

Hotels will offer virtual sex to customers by the year 2030, a new report by budget hotel chain Travelodge has revealed.

Producing the report in conjunction with engineer and futurologist Ian Pearson, the hotel chain revealed that by the year 2030, hotels will be in a position to monitor guest’s energy consumption levels, their health and mood in order to offer a better night’s sleep as well as presenting a virtual sex experience.

Allowing hotels goers to “connect with their partner” and have virtual sex whilst on the road, the hotel service of the future will feature lenses that can be worn to adjust the view of how the virtual partner looks.

“This will enable people to change the image of their partner on a regular basis, and only they will be aware as their lover will not be able to tell what they are looking at,” Pearson’s report claimed.

As well as replacing the hotel’s blue movie offering with a new form of carnal gratification, Pearson also suggests come 2030 we will be able to craft our dream experiences with hotels offering services that allow visitors to enhance their dream experiences.

“Video, audio, smells and tactile experiences produced using our bed or bed linen will play a key role in helping to make our dreams feel real,” claimed the futurologist. “We will be able to replay our favourite dream from a menu just like choosing a movie. Also, we will be able to link into dreams with our partner or family and friends and enjoy a shared dream experience."

Is virtual sex taking the possibilities to too dark and disturbing a place or will virtual sex only enhance a hotel stay? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Sensation signal loss issue refuted by manufacturer

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 03:19 AM PDT

HTC Sensation said to feature same signal loss issues as Apple's iPhone 4

HTC has hit out at claims that its recently released dual-core Android powerhouse the HTC Sensation is suffering from iPhone 4-esque grip of death antenna issues.

With user reports emerging that holding the aluminium uni-body construct of the HTC Sensation in a certain, standard manner sees the handset’s mobile, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals weaken, the Taiwanese company’s new flagship device could be tarnished by issues that famously hit the launch of Apple’s latest pocket blower.

Refuting such claims, claims that have been backed by video evidence, a HTC spokesperson has announced boldly that “No,” the handset is not suffering similar signal loss issues to the iPhone 4.

They stated: "No. Every phone experiences a slight variation in signal strength when the antenna is covered in its entirety by a palm or fingers, however under normal circumstances this does not affect the performance of the phone.”

Whilst HTC has yet to hit back with a comment as infamous as Steve Jobs’ “just avoid holding it that way,” the company’s official line is none committal and fails to amend the problem being faced by a number of the handset’s early adopters.

Are tech companies now too focused on the style over substance of devices or are signal issues such as this an unavoidable issue? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Dell Streak 10 Pro tablet set for summer launch in China

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 03:15 AM PDT

10-inch tablet won't land on these shores until 2012

You would expect Dell, being an American company, to want to bring its products to market on home soil before releasing them further a field. It’s odd then that the company has announced that the official launch of its next tablet will begin in China…

The Dell Streak 10 Pro, a 10-inch honeycomb tablet, is set to land in China this summer but won’t be in the hands of US or UK customers until some time in 2012. Dell’s VP for mobile devices, John Thode, has been chatting to CNET, and justifies the move by suggesting that the US has some ‘barriers to success’ with such devices.

"Things like confusion over what exactly Android is bringing to the table and an immature platform and roll out of devices that weren't quite ready yet,” suggests Thode. He also pointed to US networks dictating tariff prices, which can be harmful to sales.

The tablet, the specs for which include a pair of cameras, 1080p playback and output, SD and USB slots and an NVIDIA Tegra dual-core processor, runs on Android 3.0 – which may be its downfall.

If Dell plans to bring the Streak 10 Pro to the US and Europe in 2012, then it may be too late. The next iteration of Android – Ice Cream Sandiwch – will already be starting to appear on tablets by then, and customers may be loathe to purchase a device with a prior OS.

Is Dell’s move strange, or carefully thought-out? Would you buy a Dell Streak 10 Pro if you could? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

Angry Birds the movie to be produced in-house by Rovio

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 02:47 AM PDT

Mega app to hit the big screen in in-house production

Angry Birds app developer Rovio has announced it is to produce the much anticipated Angry Birds movie in-house following the acquisition of an animation studio in its native Finland.

Although the company behind the globally dominating mega app have yet to formerly announce who will be responsible for the production of the Angry Birds flick, Peter Vesterbacka, Rovio’s Chief Marketing Officer announced in an interview with The Telegraph: “You can put one and one together - if you look at the fact we bought an animation studio last week and we’re basically beefing up our capabilities in the animation area – you can see we are making a lot of this [the movie] ourselves.”

With more than 200 million downloads of Angry Birds releases across all leading mobile platforms, the Angry Birds brand has since branched out to cover off all manner of merchandise from iPhone and iPad cases to plush toys and speaker systems.

The movie, which is expected to take in the region of three years to create, marks a massive step in the growth of the Angry Bird brand. Speaking on the decision to produce the film in-house Vesterbacka announced: “For us the only thing that we care about is our fans and our brand, so why would we give away the control of our brand to someone else.”

He added: “We are not ruling out working with the studios at some point…but we don’t have to do what everyone else is doing, so we are perfectly OK going against the conventional wisdom.”

With the life span of the Angry Birds franchise seemingly stretched to its limits with a three year production time for the movie, Vesterbacka was keen to stress the film will not mark the end for the franchise that has stemmed from a mobile application.

“We are not just a games company. We want to become a next generation entertainment franchise. Making a movie is just one part of our game plan. We are here to make Angry Birds a permanent part of pop culture – like Mickey Mouse or Mario - and if making a movie helps with that then that’s great. But it’s not like making a move is our ultimate goal.”

Will the Angry Birds movie continue the brands global popularity or miss the app’s fleeting popularity and fail to make an impact? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
