Official Skype app coming to iPad

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 04:27 AM PDT

Apple's iPad is set to receive an official, jumbo-sized version of the Skype app found on the iPhone.

The full-sized iPad app (or at least a promo video for it) was apparently leaked by mistake on Skype's YouTube channel. The video has since been pulled, but is still hosted on YouTube (without sound) by a private user - check it out below.

As you might expect, the app looks to be functionally very similar to Skype for iPhone, with both text and voice input and FaceTime using both the iPad's front and rear-facing cameras.

The Skype app for iPhone, which allows users to route phone calls over the internet for pittance in comparison to regular phone calls, has been around since 2009. Until now, iPad users looking to make use of the service have been forced to use the iPhone version blown up to fit on the iPad's larger screen.

The vid doesn't furnish us with a release date, ending instead with a message that the app is "now available in the App Store" - which suggests to us that it'll be with us in the very near future. Lip-readers among you can check out the video below for a better look at iPad Skype-ing in action.

With the aid of an ultrasonic microphone, the iBats app for Android and iPhone records the sounds calls of bats in your vicinity, inaudible to the human ear. REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART

Android app review: Sony Music Unlimited
Last week Sony announced its Music Unlimited service was coming to Android, offering a Spotify like streaming service and cloud storage for your existing music collection. Sounds like the perfect answer to iCloud with a little added value right? Well in theory, it hasn't quite reached that potential yet. Find out why in our review.

iPhone app review: Dragon Dictation
Most of the time we feel quite privileged to be tech journalists, playing with all this new tech, but if there's one bane of this existence, it's transcribing interviews. It takes hours. We're sure the legal eagles and the solicitors and everyone else who has to perform this thankless, mind-numbing task for a living feels the same way. In steps Dragon Dictation for iPhone to save the day. This app will transcribe your notes for in no time. Just make sure you double check.

iPad app review: Hitpad - See What's Up
Apps like Flipboard do a great job of keeping you up with what's happening with your favourite subjects, but what about the rest of the world? Well Hitpad for iPad takes you out of the equation somewhat and brings you the news, videos and tweets that are trending from across the net. So at any time you can get a real snapshot of what's happening in the world.

Team Fortress 2 Free to Play forever on Steam

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 02:30 AM PDT

New Team Fortress 2 players can now download a Steam copy for free.

Valve's cartoon-y first person shooter, Team Fortress 2, has been made completely free to Steam users on both Mac and PC.

Team Fortress 2, which was released along with Half Life Episode 2 and Portal as part of the Orange Box back in 2007, pits opposing teams of players against each other in online deathmatches, with players battling it out using nine fixed classes of combatant - from the lantern-jawed, machine gun-toting heavy to the balaclava-sporting spy.

Gamers who download the free version of the game will be able to play the same maps, classes and game types as players who purchased Team Fortress 2 before it was Free to Play. Players who purchased the game previously will receive a special in-game hat for their characters as a reward.
