Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Following Google’s ‘what do you love?’ site going live yesterday, the internet giant has today launched Google+, a social networking service designed to provide a deeper, more subtle experience than sites such as Facebook. Apple’s iPad continues to come under pressure as details of another Android-touting tablet have emerged. Archos claims that its new 80 G9 and 101 G9 tablets will be the ‘industry’s fastest’ when they arrive in the UK in September. Apple meanwhile has finally given us something to plug into our new thunderbolt ports, as compatible storage systems and cables went on sale today.

On the day that Angry Birds became available for Windows Phone 7 users, sources at Compal have revealed that the next version of Microsoft’s Windows Phone will be called Tango and should find its way to the UK in 2012. Microsoft has also been busy reassuring critics of its E3 showing, and insists that the ‘hardcore’ gaming demographic will be won over by Kinect.

Finally, there is more smartphone news courtesy of Nokia. Leaked documents today revealed that the Finnish phone company has plans for – wait for it… four new Symbian smartphones. There are no official dates for these yet, but if they are planned for release any time soon they will have a tough time wrestling the market away from Samsung, as the Galaxy S II remained top of the UK smartphone charts for the second month in a row. Whilst the iPhone 4 held onto second spot, the speculation concerning its successor continues as iPhone 5 concept images captured the imagination.

iPhone app news: Kabbee taxi comparison app launches

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 09:23 AM PDT

Over 60 taxi companies at your fingertips.

A new app for the Apple iPhone will allow Londoners and visitors to the capitol to compare the prices from various taxi companies before booking a cab.

The free Kabbee app for iPhone offers prices for 60 London taxi companies and allows users to pick the most convenient, the cheapest, best user rating and earliest pick up time for their journey.

The app also lets customers book their cab there and then and pay by credit card, with a pre-paid account or select to pay the driver for their journey in cash. The app wants to help users avoid the risks involved with taking unauthorised taxi rides.

Kabbee follows a similar app from another London-based firm, Addison Lee which also allows users to book their journeys through the app, using the iPhone's GPS capabilities.

The app, which will be coming to Android in July and users of all smartphone platforms can access the service via the kabbee.com website on their mobile browsers.

This is a helpful service, but how about, you know, adding some services like this for the other 60-odd million people in the UK that aren't in London at this precise moment? Why does everything have to be London-centric?

Apple's upcoming iPhone 5 handset has seen its form factor hinted at by a new concept design

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 has seen reported leaks of its specifications and design land on a near daily basis in recent weeks with a new concept design hinting at the mooted device’s upcoming form factor.

Boasting a larger touchscreen display and a slightly curved aluminium back plate, the newly released concept design, crafted by designer Michal Bonikowski, has compiled a number of the leading iPhone 5 rumours into an Apple-esque design.

Whilst the ultra-thin iPhone 5 concept design sees the handset sport an iPad 2 styled angled aluminium case, recent reports have suggested the next-gen Apple device will touch down this September with a dual-core processor joining a dramatically redesigned form factor and a larger, HD display.

Further iPhone 5 rumours to date have seen the Apple smartphone handed an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities, a dual LED flash and in-built NFC technologies.

Samsung Galaxy S II tops Apple iPhone 4 in UK charts

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 04:25 AM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy S II has remained the UK's most popular smartphone for a second month once again topping Apple's iPhone 4

Samsung’s Galaxy S II handset has once again topped Apple’s iPhone 4 device to become the UK’s highest selling smartphone as Google’s Android OS continues to dominate the market.

Having beaten out the Apple iPhone 4 to become the UK’s most popular handset last month, Samsung’s 1.2GHz dual-core powerhouse has continued to top the smartphone market a survey carried out by uSwitch has revealed.

With Apple’s iPhone 4 remaining in second place, HTC’s own 1.2GHz dual-core handset, the HTC Sensation, has climbed into the hearts of the UK public rising to the third most adopted device of June with HTC continuing its dominance taking five of the remaining seven top 10 spots.

“The powerful and flexible Samsung Galaxy S II remains on top as networks and retailers continue to offer a number of strong mobile deals,” announced Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.

“Samsung can’t rest on its laurels though. The influx of feature-rich phones like the HTC EVO 3D and LG Optimus 3D, both introducing a unique glasses-free 3D viewing experience, could seriously shake things up this summer. We’re also expecting a number of new BlackBerry handsets and of course can’t ignore the enduring rumours of a fifth model of Apple’s iPhone on the horizon.”

Samsung’s Galaxy S II handset launched earlier this year with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display joining an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities, 1GB of RAM and a minimalist form factor.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S II the best phone ever released or do you think Apple’s iPhone still comes up trumps? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Archos G9 Android range unveiled as 'fastest tablets'

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 03:12 AM PDT

Archos has officially unveiled what it has dubbed as the 'industry's fastest tablets' in the 1.5GHz dual-core processor touting Archos 80 G9 and Archos 101 G9

Archos has officially unveiled its third generation of Android tablet devices with the ‘industry’s fastest tablets’ to land in the form of the 1.5GHz dual-core processor touting G9 range.

The two new G9 Archos tablets come in the form of the 8-inch Archos 80 G9 and the 10.1-inch Archos 101 G9, both of which are set to land later this year running version 3.1 of Google’s tablet centric Android Honeycomb OS.

Looking to achieve its claim of offering the “industry’s fastest tablets” Archos has fitted both the Archos 80 G9 and the Archos 101 G9 with an ARM Cortex 1.5GHz dual-core A9 processor allowing users to perform tasks up to 50 per cent faster than on the current breed of 1GHz dual-core tablets.

Boasting a HDMI out connection the range of G9 tablets are to hit the UK in September following a formal IFA showcase with the 8-inch Archos G9 to set wannabe owners back just £199 with the device rocking a 1024 x 766px display and in-built Wi-Fi connectivity.

“It is no secret that the tablet market is dominated by the iPad,” announced Archos CEO Henri Crohas at the unveiling of the G9 range. He added: “There are many ‘iPad killers’ trying to beat the iPad on its own ground, we at Archos started earlier releasing our first Android tablet in 2009. Being the first we have developed out own methods which are cheaper.”

Whilst prices for the 10.1-inch Archos 101 G9 are set to start at just £279, users keen for extra storage space will be able to bag a device with a 250GB HHD for £399 adding 2mm to its in-built stand boasting form factor.

Can Archos’ speedy cut-price tablets tempt users away from the more costly iPad and into Android powered tablet computing? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

World of Fourcraft: Hack turns NYC into a game of Risk

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 02:41 AM PDT

New York is now yours for the taking, and all you need to do is check-in via Foursquare

Remember Risk, the strategic board game of world domination? What would it be like if it were real, with real areas around you up for grabs? That’s a question that a team of developers have tried answer with World of Fourcraft – a Foursquare hack that’s melded Google maps and Risk together in New York City.

The online game, currently only boasting around 100 members, has divided New York into segments defined by its boroughs, and tallies up FourSquare check-ins by its members to determine which area is claiming dominance.

Members register as belonging to one of the different boroughs, and then each check-in is the equivalent of placing a soldier on the Risk board. An algorithm adding up the total at the end of each week to see which clan owns which segment of land. Developer Ricky Robinett says: “We wanted to make foursquare more compelling for long-term use.”

Is this a genius piece of service amalgamation, or merely a waste of time? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Microsoft: hardcore will come round to new Kinect games

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 02:16 AM PDT

Gamers will be impressed when they try out titles says boss.

Microsoft reckons hardcore gamers will be won over by the company’s decision to talk up Kinect at this year’s E3 show, despite many saying they were disappointed by the Big M’s focus on the motion controller.

That’s according to Xbox senior product manager David Dennis, speaking in an interview with Eurogamer. Dennis told the games site that, “It's similar to last year where some of the core gaming media walked out of E3 a little sceptical about Kinect and said 'I'm never going to do that'. But a lot of them also went and bought Kinect.”

Dennis went on to add, “Whether people fully understand [the new games] now, as we open up more and more over time and explain and let people get hands-on, we think people are going to love it.”

Microsoft confirmed at E3 that all future Tom Clancy games would support Kinect, but some hardcore types remain unconvinced by the motion sensor’s appeal. Let us know what you think now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

More new Nokia Symbian smartphones leaked

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 01:14 AM PDT

N500, N600, N700 and N701 all spotted in leaked docs.

Thought Nokia was giving up on Symbian after deciding to go all in with Windows Phone? Think again. Just days after the leak of the forthcoming Nokia N5, four more phones packing the updated version of the ailing smartphone OS have been leaked.

The ‘affordable, reliable, fast’ N500, codenamed Fate, kicks off proceedings, with a 5 megapixel snapper and a snappy 1GHz processor. The N600, also dubbed Cindy, will tote a 3.2-inch screen with a 1GHz processor, a similar 5MP snapper and NFC smarts.

But its the N700 (Helen) and N701 (Zeta) that are likely to set tongues wagging. The latter, with a 3.5-inch AMOLED panel, 8MP camera and 1GHz processor, it looks like being Espoo’s slickest phone ever. The N700 takes things down a notch with a 3.2-inch screen, but will be the thinnest smartphone in the world according to leaked marketing material.

Each phone is set to run Symbian Belle, the follow-up to Symbian Anna, currently kicking it on the latest Finnish smartphones. Stay tuned for prices and official release dates.

Google+ social network revealed

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 11:34 PM PDT

Can Big G finally get its social networking strategy right?

Google has at last come clean about its full-on social networking plans, revealing its new Google+ service last night. The wide-ranging package aims to offer a deeper, more subtle approach to online relationships than key rival Facebook, with invites to the service already rolling out.

Google+ is currently split into four areas: circles, sparks, hangouts and mobile. Circles, already much-touted, allows you to share status and personal info with select groups of friends. The Big G says this mimics real-life, where you don’t tell the same things to the same people. In Google’s words, “Just make a circle, add your people, and share what’s new—just like any other day.”

Sparks is all about sharing, “…highly contagious content,” offering the best articles and info on whatever your hobby happens to be. Think of it like an amped up, more personalised version of Google’s own Reader offering.

Hangouts offers a real-time video area for you to spend time with your Circles online, having a group video chat. Google reckons this will be better than trying to arrange a regular video call, with users able to pop in as and when they feel.

Finally, the mobile offering takes in a raft of killer features. All your locations can easily be shared from your blower, instant upload for photos to a private cloud album and a new group messaging service dubbed Huddle, which aims to best SMS. Mobile is already up for grabs in Android Market and can be used via your smartphone’s browser too. An iOS version is also in the offing.

Google+ is live now, but is in beta and will remain invite-only for the foreseeable. You can see more in-depth info and videos on Google’s own blog too. Be sure to let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
