HTC announced today that the hotly anticipated HTC EVO 3D will arrive in Britain in July. By September however it may have plenty of competition as both Apple and Samsung are set to release new handsets. Samsung is expected to release an updated Galaxy S II, whilst reports suggest that Apple will come armed not only with the iPhone 5 but with a mid-range pay-as-you-go iPhone 4S in addition.

Zumba Fitness has risen back to the top of the gaming charts after a 33 percent rise in sales saw it coast past L.A. Noire and F.E.A.R. 3. Elsewhere in gaming news, our poll on which next-gen games platform excites you the most saw you vote overwhelming against Nintendo’s Wii U, which received less than 10 percent of the votes.

iPhone 5 release to see Apple launch second entry iPhone

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 08:33 AM PDT

Apple is set to enter the mid-range smartphone market launching an iPhone 4S PAYG device in September alongside the radically redesigned iPhone 5

Apple will launch two new iPhone handsets at its expected September unveiling with the radically redesigned iPhone 5 to be joined by a cheaper pay-as-you-go iPhone 4S or iPhone Nano device, Wall Street industry analysts have claimed.

In a note to investors today Chris Whitmore, an analyst with Deutsche Bank, suggested Apple was to release two new iPhone devices in September stating: "With Nokia and RIM struggling the time is right for Apple to aggressively penetrate the mid-range smartphone market (i.e. $300-500 category) to dramatically expand its [total addressable market] and market share."

Reigniting hope of an iPhone Nano Whitmore’s claims hint at the iPhone 5, rumoured to sport a dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities inside a redesigned body, being joined by a mid-range, cheaper device that like its iPod siblings will feature reduced functionality but the same stunning aesthetical standard of its premium counterpart.

Opening up the iPhone brand to a new level of consumer, the introduction of an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S would see the Cupertino tech giant actively target Google’s Android operating system that has become successful across a broad range of devices from entry-level handsets to premium smartphones.

With a lower priced iPhone handset targeting midrange PAYG customers, Apple could also see sales of applications from the iTunes App Store sore as millions of new users adopt the market dominating breed of handsets and look to fully utilise their potential.

Will Apple launch a midrange iPhone 4S alongside the iPhone 5 this September? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android app news: Cut the Rope makes Android debut

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 08:21 AM PDT

Lovable monster Om Nom jumps over the Apple/Android divide

Android owners can finally get their hands on one of the cutest-yet-most-addictive games iOS has ever offered, following the launch of Cut The Rope.

Cut The Rope sees the lovable, candy-hungry monster Om Non bring his quest for sweeties to Android, with the title available to download exclusively from the GetJar app store. It's ad-supported and hence free to download.

For those unfamiliar with this multi-award-winning application, the idea is to drop the candy directly into the mouth of Om Nom by cutting the strings that prevent his lazy rear-end from getting it himself.

As you 'cut the rope' the candy will swing towards him and you'll need to collect up to three stars as you go. There's all manner of bubbles and shooters dotted around the levels to help you along the way.

Cut The Rope is the latest iPhone classic to finally make its way over to the Android platform. In recent months we've seen the likes of Plants vs Zombies and Fruit Ninja.

Most of these titles have been exclusive to the new Amazon Appstore, but GetJar has stolen a march on this one.

Nokia N5 leaks running new Symbian Anna OS

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 07:44 AM PDT

Nokia has seen its upcoming Nokia N5 handset leak online with the Symbian Anna handset revealing the company's continued Symbian OS plans

Images of a new entry-level Nokia Symbian smartphone have leaked online revealing the Finnish phone manufacturer’s continued plans for the flailing OS.

Having last week officially unveiled the MeeGo-sporting Nokia N9 and with the leak of the company’s first Windows Phone 7 device, Nokia looked set to enter a new, and improved, phase of its smartphone production with the newly leaked Nokia N5 sparking unease at the lingering Symbian plans.

Unlike the N9 and leaked Sea Ray WP7 handset both of which are aesthetically pleasing svelte devices, the snapped N5 boasts a chunky form factor with the standard array of a 3.2-inch touchscreen display and physical Symbian menu buttons. Running the new Symbian Anna update the N5 touts a refreshed user interface in an attempt to tackle the system’s poor user reception.

Featuring a 5-megapixel rear-mounted camera with LED flash, the Nokia N5 is claimed, by the person responsible for its leaking, to be set for sequels in the former of hardware improved Nokia N6 and N7 handsets.

Can Nokia pass its Symbian funk and use Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform as an escape from its smartphone woes? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung to upgrade Galaxy S II to counter Apple's iPhone 5

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 07:02 AM PDT

Samsung is expected to upgrade its Samsung Galaxy S II handset this September with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor to land at IFA

Samsung is to upgrade its market leading smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S II, with the ultra-thin handset to see its processor upped to a 1.4GHz dual-core offering in September, new reports suggest.

Launched with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor earlier this year, upgraded pre-release from the 1GHz dual-core CPU touted at the handset’s first unveiling at Mobile World Congress, the Samsung Galaxy S II has become the UK’s number one handset sporting a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display and Google’s Android operating system.

Upping the handset’s CPU, Samsung is expected to reveal the updated Galaxy S II device this September, hinting at an IFA arrival, with the 1.4GHz dual-core processor to land alongside the latest version of Google’s Android Gingerbread OS, version 2.3.4.

Reasoned to be as a counter to the expected Apple iPhone 5, it has been reported that the refreshed Galaxy S II will maintain its 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities, 1GB of RAM and lightweight minimalist form factor.

Which handset most takes your fancy the Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Sensation or upcoming Apple iPhone 5? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony PS4 better than Xbox 720, Wii U, say T3 readers

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 06:37 AM PDT

We asked and you answered: Here's the results from last week's poll...

Following rumours that both Sony and Microsoft have new consoles in the works, and the unveiling of Nintendo’s Wii U at E3 earlier this month, we might be on the brink of a next-gen console arms race. In the opening battle, Sony’s ‘Playstation 4’ has come out victorious with nearly 50% of votes from you, the T3 readers.

Microsoft’s still-secret ‘Xbox 720’ claimed a respectable second place with 41%, whilst the biggest surprise is the lack of excitement for the Wii U which sits bottom of the pile with just under 10% of your votes despite being the only machine to have actually been unveiled.

The lack of information surrounding the plans of Sony and Microsoft make their potential new products infinitely more enticing, perhaps more so than Nintendo’s offering. But Nintendo’s press conference at E3 certainly received a positive response and Ninty’s new console promises a great deal, not least the inevitable return of popular franchises such as The Legend of Zelda, Mario and Super Smash Brothers.

For all its initial success in selling the Wii, Nintendo has struggled to keep buyers hooked to keep sales ticking over. As a result the console is now very much on the decline, whilst the Xbox 360 and PS3 still reportedly have life in them.

This poll is primarily about brand loyalty, and arguably shows that most of you are happy with the Xbox 360 and PS3 over the Wii. To mangle an overused sporting cliché, ‘you are only as good as your last… erm… console’ and Nintendo’s Wii may have left you uninterested and lacking confidence in a new product.

One area where Nintendo has consistently led the way is innovation, so their failure to capture the imagination in this poll is surprising. Has Nintendo lost the confidence of ‘hardcore gamers’? Are you worried that the Wii U will simply be an updated Wii? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed. Or check out our Wii U video below...

Zumba Fitness continues to top the UK gaming charts

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Zumba Fitness has once again topped the UK gaming charts beating competition from LA Noire and F.E.A.R 3

Zumba Fitness is once again atop the UK All Format gaming charts having recorded its second highest week of sales since first hitting stores 12 weeks ago.

Outselling the following three most popular games of the week combined, Zumba Fitness continues to grab the attention of active gamers seeing a 33 per cent rise in sales during the past seven days to push Rockstar’s LA Noire release into second with new release F.E.A.R. 3 completing the week’s top three games.

With DiRT 3 and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean rounding out the All Format leading five from the past week, the 3DS based The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D saw its weekly sales drop 69 per cent to land it in sixth place ahead of FIFA 11, Duke Nukem Forever and Brink in positions seven to nine respectively.

Whilst the ongoing Wimbledon tennis tournament is sure to have helped boost sales of tennis title Top Spin 4, new gaming entries struggled to make an impression during the past week with Activision’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon only able to enter the market in 17th with EA’s Shadows of the Damned landing down in 31st.

What was your top game of the past seven days by it console, app based or board? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HP TouchPad 7-inch model to launch in the UK this August?

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 03:49 AM PDT

HP is expected to follow-up its 9.7-inch HP TOuchPad tablet with a 7-inch model set to land this August

HP is to launch a 7-inch rendition of its webOS powered TouchPad tablet this August, just weeks after its 9.7-inch model makes its way to the UK, new reports have suggested.

Set to be officially unveiled in the UK later this week, the original 9.7-inch HP TouchPad is to land running the webOS operating system pioneered by Palm boasting a 1024 x 768p resolution display and a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with new reports suggesting the mooted 7-inch model will feature a similarly impressive set of credentials.

Ahead of the TouchPad’s global launch the Taiwan Economic News has reported HP is ordering between 400,000 and 450,000 TouchPad devices per month from suppliers with a 7-inch model making up a significant portion of this stock.

Last week retailer Carphone Warehouse made the 9.7-inch HP TouchPad available for pre-order in the UK with the 16GB and 32GB renditions of the tablet to set wannabe users back £399 and £479 respectively when the device launches in July.

Which device would you rather have in your gadget collection a 9.7-inch or 7-inch HP TouchPad tablet? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC EVO 3D UK release date confirmed by HTC

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

HTC announce the 3D capable HTC EVO 3D will launch in European markets in July

HTC has announced it is to officially roll out the HTC EVO 3D handset in Europe with the 3D capable smartphone to hit British shores in July.

Following on from a number of rumours that suggest the EVO 3D was headed to UK soil HTC have confirmed the handset will be rolled out across European markets next month with UK pricing and a precise date of release yeat to be announced.

More than a gimmick, the HTC EVO 3D takes its 3D credentials to its core with a 4.3-inch qHD stereoscopic display allowing users to view 3D content without the need for extra-dimensional specs whilst dual 5-megapixel snappers allow users to create their own 3D content, a feature further boosted by 720p HD video recording capabilities at 30fps.

Featuring the latest rendition of the company’s hugely popular Sense UI that first landed on the HTC Sensation, the HTC EVO 3D sports 3D menus and widgets with a speedy 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor providing the power.

“Smartphones have revolutionised how people communicate and entertain themselves on the move. You can now carry your favourite films, music, photos and games in your pocket wherever you go,” announced Florian Seiche, President of HTC EMEA.

“The HTC EVO 3D allows people to explore this new technology trend beyond the living room, enabling them to capture and share their lives with family and friends in amazing 3D.”

Are you tempted by the UK arrival of the HTC EVO 3D or do you see 3D smartphones as nothing more than a passing trend doomed to failure? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

New MacBook Air: Update indicated by low stock

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 02:43 AM PDT

Is the Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt-packing MacBook Air just a few weeks away?

Apple rumours are typically long, drawn out affairs, and gossip surrounding the refreshed MacBook Air is no different. As much as we may have said this in the past: the new Air looks set to land very soon.

The fuel for the fire comes from Best Buy, which has declared the diminutive Mac out of stock. According to 9to5Mac, this is normally a sign that a newer model is just around the corner. It’s a logic we can’t fault.

The new MacBook Air will probably benefit from Intel’s Sandy Bridge chipset, just like its bigger brother the MacBook Pro and the desktop iMac. It’ll also see a Thunderbolt input drilled into its unibody case, which will allow data transfer speeds of up to 10GB per second.

Have you been waiting for this update before feverishly pressing the ‘buy’ button? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.
